Beware the Food Pushers

Newsletters

Don't let the food pushers give you a push!

Food pushers are people who get a need within them fulfilled by getting us to eat. They may feel that they're a great host when others eat their baked goods, or maybe they need the positive comments you make when you eat their goodies.

Or maybe they hate to eat alone or to eat more than you do in front of you, so they "push" you to eat. Whatever their reasons, food pushers can sabotage your weight loss plans.

Keep these techniques in mind the next time you're faced with the food pushers in your life, so you can push back:

  • Practice saying no politely but firmly. You may have to say it several times before they realize you really mean it. "I know your cookies are delicious, but I have to decline."

  • Keep it simple and don't feel like you have to justify yourself. Your weight and health are at stake! "I'm going for a walk during lunch, but thanks for the offer to eat out."

Take a few moments to reflect on the last time you felt pressured to eat by a food pusher. Work out a few ways to say "thanks but no thanks." Then practice in the mirror so you can be prepared and stand your ground the next time someone tries to push food on you.
