Has anyone heard of the Negative Calorie Diet?? Basically you eat nothing but fruit and veggies for 7 days and it's suppose to help you lose fat fast. The jist of it is....
"Negative Calorie Foods" are foods that take up more caloric energy to digest then the calories that are in them. Your body has to expend energy in order to digest and absorb foods, in fact, 10% of your daily caloric intake is used to process foods in your body. So these "negative" calorie foods are foods that take more calories to digest then actual calories in the item of food.
I'm hearing mixed reviews about this and wonder if anyone really has tried this?? Post your experience with this 'diet' and let me know how it worked or didn't work for you

| I think it'd be pretty difficult to sustain yourself on celery and whatnot only. Also, difficult to get in all the right nutrition. I think it may work very short term, but you'd be setting yourself up for a balloon-fest when you started eating normal again.

That would result in you losing weight very quickly, but not much of that weight would be fat. The scale would go down quickly, but you wouldn't look much better. Also it wouldn't take long for your metabolism to slow down and weight loss to almost stop. If you only need to lose 5 or 10 pounds I would say go for it. Anything more than that and you're much better off doing it the real way.

The fantastic concept of eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables is written about at length in the book Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman his idea is summarised by the forumla health = nutrients / calories
where the more micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and pytochemicals) a food has and the fewer calories it has, the more helpful it is to health (and weight loss). And helpfully there is no silly suggestion that you're doing it for 7 days - you're doing it for life.
if fast weight loss is your goal then this method is one of the safest and healthiest and I highly recommend you buy the book or check it out of your library.
Now to address some specifics in your post. The energy taken to digest food is otherwise known as Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) on average it is 10%, if you want a bit more info it is practically 0% for fat, 10% for most foods, 30% for the protein macronutrient.
Fruit can be quite calorie dense and so the concept that it is 'negative calorie' is flawed. that's not to say that it shouldn't be a big part of your diet and if it displaces even more calorie-dense choices then you have a positive effect.
You mentioned FL4I in another post so it is probably worth mentioning that the same company that fleeces people out of $39 for that diet also sell an online book with a name like 'negative calorie diet' falling for their scum once is unfortunate but falling for it again is surely avoidable!
So does eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables work in terms of weight loss? I was originally 165lb at 5'5". I got down to 111lb which put me rather close to being underweight and I've decided to add more calories to my diet in order to gain some weight. So yes, I guess it does work.
May I recommend you read the tutorial? it has a lot of useful information and it is free.

Thanks for all the information.
So are you saying FL4I is not worth the money and doesn't work? Did you have a bad experience? I've had great success with it thus far. I know it's not a life long diet, it's just helping to get the fat off so I can maintain when I reach my goal. And yes, I know how to maintain
I appriciate all your advice and will go check out the tutorial.

| No, I personally never saw the need to have a computer randomly select what I eat (or pay $39 for the privilege). At an earlier point in my nutritional "journey" I used to eat junk foods and compared to those the FL4I diet looks healthy - but where I am now (see the book I mentioned in the previous post) it isn't just about maintaining my ideal weight, it is also about eating healthy foods, and my ideas about nutrition have evolved to the point where I don't much rate the foods dished out by that diet generator (which I only know about because I followed the FL4I topics). The only reason that FL4I works for those it works for is simply because it creates a calorie deficit - yet my point is that there are healthier food choices that will create that deficit. The FL4I plan does not specify portion sizes, so some people will eat large portions and plateau. Anyhow I think I have vented enough about the subject!

Wow, some vendetta huh Nir ;)
Sorry you hate the plan so much, I'm not there yet. I did lose 10 pounds by eating healthy, small portions but hit a plateau for 2 months. I needed something help kick my weight lose efforts back in gear. So far, this works! I love the diet generator telling me what to eat for now, being a full time mom of two and working 40+ hrs a week it helps to take the guess work out. As mentioned before, I plan on maintaining by incorporating a variety of small portioned, healthy foods once I'm done with FL4I, as well as continuing to hit the gym and walk my 5 miles a day!
Have a good day!!
