It's almost time for the next challenge, everyone!
Here are the guidelines for the Holiday weight loss challenge (similar to those of the previous ones):
- The challenge will run from Sunday November 1st through Thursday December 31st
- You may join the challenge at any time beginning November 1st, and late-comers are most welcome. You can even join the challenge in December.
- To join the challenge, post your height, starting weight and goal weight.
You may choose any goal you like. But if your goal is to lose more than 17 pounds during the challenge period -- more than two pounds a week -- please explain why you think your goal is realistic.
This website is dedicate to healthy, common sense, lasting weight loss, and does not support crash diets which do not have realistic expectations of producing long-term results.
For more information, please see the Tutorial and the forum topic The Most Likely Reason Your Diet Will Fail.
Your height will be used to display your BMI. Disclosing your height is optional but as incentive to share your height with us, unless told your height I'll just assume you are 5' (1.52m).
- Pick a day for your weekly weigh-in, and stick to it a closely as you can. Then post your current weight each week -- or as often as you would like!
You may wish to read: How Often Should You Weigh Yourself
Those who are not losing weight, and those who are gaining, will receive praise for continuing to participate. It's so easy to run and hide! We've all been there ourselves.
We also know that by participating, they are very likely doing better than they otherwise would be.
- The results will be updated every Thursday (or more often) and posted right here just below these instructions, so they will always be easy to find.
We want the challenge stats to be realistic and reflect active challenge members, so anyone not posting for two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the list. But they will be put right back on the next week should they post again.
If you need to withdraw from the challenge, please have the courtesy to post a farewell note or send me a Private Message (PM). Your name will be removed.
- You are encouraged to share how you are doing during the challenge, and especially to give each other support. However, to make it easier for me to find your weekly weight, please make sure your weight stands out.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them or send me a PM.
Wishing you success and happiness!
Nir

Height = 6'2"
Starting weight = 213.8 lbs.
Goal weight = 193.8 lbs.
I have been looking forward to this for a while. A little competition is all I need to keep up my motivations! I have my entire plan mapped out in front of me on an excel worksheet, and my goal weight of 180 should occur during the month of February, 2010. According to my chart, I am to be 193.8 on December 31st. I am sticking to that plan and I will get there. This challenge is exactly what I need to make it happen!

It's ambitous, but I'm hoping to be down to 150 by Nov 1st anyway (this is today's weight). Last challenge I lost, to date, 14 pounds so I don't think its anything I can't handle. Also, my boyfriend and I are going to start training for a race next week, so my exercise is going to be boosted significantly (I don't excerise often now). Here's to seeing the 130s for the first time in 4 years!

Currently 113.8lb Goal 115.8lb (i.e. 2lb gain) Height 5'5". My BMI should therefore increase from 18.9 to 19.3. I'll weigh on Thursdays (which means my final weigh-in will fall on New Year's Eve the last day of the challenge). This is the first time anyone is using these challenges for weight gain so uncharted territory.
My maintenance calories are 1650 if I'm sedentary and probably 2000 given my current exercise commitments. I'm currently eating 2125 and will adjust this to 2100 or 2150 to slow down or speed up gains if required.
I finished the last challenge at 115.6lb because I was using a pessimist-weight-loss way of looking at things (highest weight seen in recent past) but for this challenge I'm using physicsdiet.com's concept of Weighted Trending Average

I would like to use the challenge to maintain. Will also try using the PhysicsDiet.com trend weight. It is 119.9 today, but my real goal is 120, so I'm calling the start weight 120. That puts me in the purple to start out.
And my goal is to stay in the purple throughout the holidays!

Okay, I'm in again. I will keep weighing the way I have, I weight daily and average it once a week and use that figure for my reporting weight. It makes sense to me to do it that way and it accounts for normal ups and downs. I hope I do better this time than I have been doing.
Height-- 5'3" (65")
Starting weight --135.4 lbs
Goal weight--125 lbs

| That graph is a bit illegible because it shows my weight for just 5 days - and in kilograms (I oscillated between 51.5kg and 52.0kg on those 5 days). This translates to 113.4lb and 114.5lb respectively. The blue line represents the 'weighted average' which attempts to capture an overall picture of where I'm at - an average of today's weight but taking into account my weight the previous day and the day before etc. but assigning more weight to recent days and less weight to previously-occurring days (hence: 'weighted' average). Due to my recent weigh-ins this has increased from 113.8lb to 113.9lb in the last 5 days, representing a 0.1lb gain. Based on this, the graphing website had calculated that I'm eating at a daily surplus of 116 calories which is remarkably close to my own guess. It's really surprising when the numbers work out exactly the way you expect them to - because for the longest time I was "in the dark" unable to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Nir- you mentioned to me a while back that I might be susceptible to 'calorie creep' when I had hit a wall with weight-loss a while back.---You were exactly right!
Also, by the way I will be weighing in on Mondays. I am expecting a huge result this Monday...I feel thinner, and am coming off a 2 week plateau.

Same as last week despite high motivation, eating good, and getting all the workouts in as planned. I even got an extra workout in. So I don't know what the heck is up with my body this week? It's definitely challenging me and I'm going to kick it's butt.

212.0 lbs.
I know I did more than that this week at the gym. I self sabotaged myself yesterday, as it was a really bad food day. I was on the road all day and ate at 2 restaurants. I was hoping for 210. I guess the only good news is my body fat % went from 26.5 to 25.9. My motivation is tremendous for the gym. Its the late-night food extra-calories that is getting me. It won't happen to me again. I am behind schedule now quite a bit for my goal to be hit mid February. It's time for me to go HARDCORE.

hey tours.....get over to the General Discussions, How to stop eating after dinnner page and re-read those ideas! :)
I am working hard not to eat after dinner....so far i am only allowing myself to have almonds, walnuts, apples and my hot teas....i have a bunch of different flavors and just add splenda to make it taste better for me. It seems to be helping me to avoid eating things like cereal, or popcorn or a soda and popcorn! :)
we can do this tours!!!!
thanks hiker for getting me to look that up and get the right page! I often talk about late nite eating under the binge eating thread... :)

| Regarding duplicates: once you hit Send and you're waiting for ages, try to resist the urge to hit Send again (each time you click it again is another duplicate). Instead, open another window and bring up the topic and you might just discover you've already succesfully posted. Sure this isn't ideal, but clearly the servers are a bit busy.

| BJD74- what's messing me up the most is the current daylight situation. It gets dark here now at 5:30pm, which feels like dinner-time to me. Before I wasn't eating dinner until 8pm, which would keep me full until bedtime. Now I've been eating dinner much earlier and when 10pm rolls around I am very hungry. I am proud to say I tried to eat dinner a bit later last night, and made it to bed without any other snack! I will be losing 4 lbs. this week. This is going to be my Biggest Loser week.

Hey Pirate Lady!
I just thought I'd stop in and say hello. Congrats on your weight loss!
I just spent 20 minutes looking through weight loss challenges from times past trying to find where you teased me when you got below 170... and now you're below 160!
I'm still behind you, but I'm pretty much at goal weight now. Whatever that is. It's so easy to dwell on the fat at my waist, but I'm 63 and not sure I can get rid of it. My face is looking pretty thin at 163... the lowest I've been in over 25 years.
I've watched The Biggest Loser this season, and have been posting in that forum. But otherwise I haven't been on here much. Too busy in my retirement activities with my dog clubs. My dog just passed his test to become a therapy dog and we will be visiting retirement homes and hospitals together.
And lately I've been doing volunteer work in my county's emergency H1N1 flu shot clinics. Now they've got me teaching others how to run the computers.
Congrats and keep up the good work!
Peter
