I've noticed that when my body gets in the low 140's, high 130's (very good weight for me, closer to my goals!) I just get hit with really bad depression. I get so unmotivated, depressed mope a lot, lay in bed zoned out for hours without really watching tv. I can't help but think there's a connection, but WHY? When I weigh myself in the morning and see that my weight is down, I do a little dance. Then anywhere from 7 hours to three days later I just kind of sigh and think "ugh, so what?" and before you know it, I'm back in the high 140's. Well, the cycle has started again and I definitely do not want to gain 6 or so pounds back in the next couple days! If anyone else experiences this, what helps you snap out of it?

my #1 thought is that when you start losing like that, do you eat enough?  maybe you are not getting everything you need?

or maybe if you think you have gone down, you can binge because you know you can take it off later?  that actually happened to me when i fist started my weight loss-- i would not get passed that first 5 lbs for ages cuz i kept going back to eating too much or not working out....  i would keep falling back.  maybe if you just really try to stick through it when you start feeling depressed (and if you are getting everything you need in terms of nutrients and calories).  maybe try to really distract yourself with something that does make you feel good that doesn't involve food or eating if that feeling hits.  just stick it out past those first 5-10 lbs or whatever and maybe you will start feeling good about it on a regular basis.

i dunno, just a thought.

I'm no expert here, but, I suffer from depression.

There is a link to low serotonin levels and low carbs.

Google the subject and see if you can find further info.

If I may ask, what are you doing to help you lose weight? The reason I ask is because sometimes your diet can have an impact on your moods and emotional health. When our bodies don't get the right kind of nutrition, sometimes certain things that are supposed to kick in don't or certain things that aren't supposed to kick in do. These "things" can be hormones and other internal chemicals that can affect our mood. Be sure you are taking a multi-vitamin that is appropriate for your age and gender as you continue with your weight maintenance efforts.

I noticed in your post that you tend to wonder "so what?" during your periods of depression. I know you do a dance in the morning that celebrate your weight loss achievement, but what have you been able to do differently since losing weight? If you lose weight but continue to go on with life in the same way, it may not really seem like the goal was worth it. Perhaps going out and purchasing a few new items for your wardrobe that you couldn't fit before, or doing something such as going out to a salsa club will help to associate the weight loss with something fun that you didn't feel comfortable doing before. Maybe every 2 weeks, check in on your weight and if you've been able to maintain it then purchase a bit of clothing and go out for a night on the town. Do things to help yourself feel like a new, more fit and more confident person.

Congratulations on the weight loss and keep up the good work, we know you can do it!

A typical day when I'm watching my intake goes something like this:

Breakfast
around 8 strawberries
small banana
special yogurt (3 net carb, 11 g protein)

Lunch
fiber granola bar
apple
2 plain scrambled eggs

Snack
dry bran flakes
coffee with light soymilk

Dinner
4 chicken tenderloins
small baked potato
bagged mixed veggies (corn, carrots, peas, green beans)

Dessert
2 low-fat nutrigrain waffles, spray butter
couple dove chocolates

I think it's a pretty fair, balanced diet and no foods I'm sick of. I'm just a typical emotional eater and it doesn't help that I'm very easy to upset

Also, my weight is hovering around low 143, high 142. Whoooo!
