Hi everyone.  I've already introduced myself on the New Member section, but I'll summarize here briefly.

I am 62 years old, 5'5" and weigh 145. I'd like to lose 15 lbs by April 1st. I really like the idea of being able to post a public journal, because it adds that little extra pressure. I'm going to just count calories, and not worry so much about the type food (within reason).

I also don't eat regular meals, just whenever I get hungry, so these entries may seem a little weird. I'm already 3 days into this diet but I'm going to back post the 3 days so it's all here. My only real exercise is taking care of my mother's goats. That's only 2 or 3 times a week.

Day 1: Weight 145

I'm a coffeeholic (decaf) so I'm going to start each day with 250 calories for coffee creamer. That way I don't have to count each cup. I'll assume 2000 calories maintenance. That's probably too high, but hopefully I won't drink that much coffee, and maybe the goats will keep me busy!

coffee creamer: 250
egg sandwich (Waffle House): 250
half&half, 2 tblsp: 40
2 oranges: 140
bread, small heal: 50
rice, 1/2c: 200
sugar, 1 tbsp: 60
mushroom soup, one can, with water: 290
10 oyster crackers: 50

Total: 1330 (-670)

Day 2: Weight 144.5

Coffee: 250
grapfruit juice, 4 oz: 30
spaghetti, 1 cup: 330
brownie, 1" square: 110
2 oranges: 140
3 sauerkraut balls: 110
stewed tomatoes, 1 can: 100

Total: 1070 (-930)

Calorie loss to date: -1600

Exercise: Carried 2 bales of hay to the goats. Swept out the loafing shed in the barn.

Day 3: Weight 142.5 (just water, not fooling myself)

Coffee creamer: 250
Grapefuit juice 2oz: 20
sweet pickle: 20
egg sandwich (WH): 250
2 oz half & half: 40
orange: 60
cheese, 1oz: 120
salad, salad dressing, 3tbsp: 120
apple: 80
soda crackers, 2: 40
mushroom soup, 1 can, with water 250

Total: 1250 (-750)

Calorie loss to date -2350

The ~3 lbs loss is just water. That means I'll have to try to get to 127 to maintain 130, right?. This is the first day I started to feel really hungry.

A good treat: Cut one apple into small slices or cubes, mix in some artificial sweetener to taste (depending on how sweet the apples are), add 1 oz of extra sharp cheddar cheese (grated), and 5 tbsp of Cool Whip Free. Mix thoroughly.  It has about 240 calories, but is a big serving.

Day 4, January 8: Weight 142.5

coffee creamer: 250
grapefruit juice, 4oz: 40
apple, small: 80
cheese, 1oz: 120
Cool Whip Free, 5 tbsp: 40
half&half, 3: 60
mushroom soup, 1 can: 250
20 oyster crackers: 100
orange: 70
diet cocoa mix: 30
grilled cheese 1oz cheese: 230

Total: 1270

Net calorie loss: -2980

Today was exercise day. Yesterday there were 60 mph winds and a 20" diameter dead oak tree fell on the fenceline---smashed it to the ground. All we had was a 14" chain saw and a couple of prybars. It took almost 3 hours to get it off and repair the fence. The fence looks terrible, but it works, I guess.

Day 5, January 9: Weight 142

coffee creamer: 250
grapefruit juice, 6oz: 70
baked potato: 220
butter, 1 pat: 40
bread, 3 slices: 180
lunchmeat, ham, 3 slices: 120
brownie: 120
hard candy, 3 pcs: 60
orange: 70
grilled cheese, 1oz cheese: 240

Felt hungry all day today, probably due to workout yesterday. Having two house cats helps a lot. Have to sneak to the refrigerator and hide in the bathroom to eat a snack in peace.

oyster crackers 20: 100
beef veg soup, 2.5 cups: 350

Hi Nancy, and welcome.  It sounds like tending goats is actually pretty hard work!  I think I'll stick with my exercise DVD's.  From what I know, it looks like your calorie levels are pretty healthy for your size, and a few lbs are gone already, so keep up the great start~

Thanks, mj36. Just knowing that someone might look at this log really helps a lot more than I expected. This diary section is a great idea.

Nancy, it really helps me too!  Not only knowing that someone could look, but people give lots of good feedback and advice too, so you will not be on your own trying to do this.

Was weak and hungry all day long, no energy. I tried eating a paper-thin grilled cheese (that usually works, but no go), then a diet cocoa, nope. Then I made a cup of hot tea with tons of sugar, and that did it. Wonder if it'll work the next time? Better go to bed early tonight, before it comes back, and I start trying too many other things.

It's back to the goat farm tomorrow. I lead two totally different lives.

Weight was up a half pound today. Guess it was all that salty soup.

Day 7, January 11: Weight 142.5

-coffee creamer: 250
Lunch:
-egg sandwich, swipe of butter: 220
Snacks:
-grilled cheese, 1oz cheese: 250
-small orange: 60
-diet cocoa: 30
-tea, 2 tbsp! sugar: 110
Evening:
-two slices of toast with a smidgen of butter: 120
-apple cheese dessert, again
--apple: 80
--cheese, 1 oz: 120
--CoolWhip Free, 5 tbsp: 50

Even with all that sugar in your tea, you still had an excellent day calorie wise!  Sometimes our bodies just want something and it was a good idea to have the tea and be done with it.  Sometimes I have to put myself to bed to avoid a binge haha.  Have fun with the goats tomorrow.  Think of the exercise you will get to tally~

Oh man this had me laughing.  Who knew cats could help a person with their diet?

Haha, I have a dog like that.  Every time you open the fridge, he assumes it's for him.  He can gaze with the most pathetic look on his little dog face.

No fences down today. Put out hay for the goats. Swept out the lounging area of the barn, and shoveled "it" away.  Plumbers are coming tomorrow to redo the whole drain pipe system in the basement.  No water all day.  I've put off getting things ready 'til too late. Now I'll have to get up early in the morning and do it. I'm on a sugar binge. It surely must be bad for you, because I like it.

Day 8, January 12: Weight 142.0

-coffee creamer: 250
Lunch:

It's good that it doesn't take much to cure your binge though.  When I crave sugar (like last night boohoo) I can find myself eating all kinds of sweet things like danish, brownies, ice cream, candy~  Glad to hear no fences down today.  Sounds like a much more pleasant trip to tend the goats.  Good luck getting ready for the plumbers.

Still plodding along. The weight finally went down a pound. Isn't it sad to sink so low that you actually count individual oyster crackers?

My plumbers must watch "Flip That House." They removed the old cast iron drain pipe with a sledge hammer. I live in a very old house and the plaster is only hanging on the walls due to umpteen coats of paint. At least the excitement kept me from thinking about eating.

Day 9, January 13: Weight 141

-coffee creamer: 250
Lunch:
-egg sandwich (Waffle House): 250
-20 green olives: 100
-oatmeal, 1/2c dry: 150
-sugar and 1/2 pat of butter: 80
Evening:
-very small orange: 60
-2 sardines(yech! Gave the rest to the cats): 80

I used to count out these little Teddy Graham crackers into baggies.  We all have our ways haha.  I had such a vivid picture of the plaster clinging together with paint!  Hope everything is back in working order.

I know you're not supposed to, but I have to weigh in every day. The curiosity just drives me nuts otherwise. That's why I like counting calories. It helps to get through spikes upward or plateaus. I just keep telling myself this will pass, just look at the calories, you've GOT to be losing even if the scales don't show it.

Had to go out and eat with a friend tonight, so I didn't eat anything but a few olives and crackers after noon. Talked them into going to a sub shop and found a turkey sub with cheese and no dressings. (Meatball sub sure looked good, though).

"Incident at the Waffle House": Had to go there for dinner to eat with a friend. I ordered the SMALL bowl of chili and the waitress said I should order the BIG bowl---"It's the same price, you know. Hey Fred, show her the difference between bowl sizes." Then Fred holds up two bowls from across the room (Like, Hey look everyone, this stupid person is about to order the small bowl of chili.) Then my friend says, get the big bowl, and just don't eat it all.

I tried to measure a cup (by the mouthful) but I feel stuffed. My mother used to tell me that your stomach shrinks when you go on a diet. Is that true, or just an old wives tail?

I think your mother is right, the stomach does shrink when you put less in it for a period of time.  I have read that overeating causes it to expand and then it takes more to feel full.  Anyway, chili isn't the worst choice you could make in a waffle house by any means!  I am sure it wasn't as much as you thought, those beans sure can be filling!

Supposed to get to 14 degrees tonight (that is cold for Georgia). I hope the goats will be OK. When my heat pump shifts into emergency heat it blows the main breaker. The AC man disconnected two of the three heat strips, temporarily, today. I have to upgrade to 200 amp service---big job. It is 54 degrees in my kitchen right now! Only good thing I can think of about today is that cold makes you burn more calories to keep warm!

It's always hard to count calories when I visit my mother. She cooks from scratch. But she's very supportive with meals, except she says I don't need to lose any weight.  I've had this half head of lettuce nagging at me in the refrigerator for a week and I finally ate the whole thing this evening so it wouldn't nag me any more.

Broke 140 today. I think it's going to get tougher now. The water weight loss the first days, plus about 3 actual lbs makes you feel good, but now it will be slow. I'll chance posting this early tonight. Hope there's no more to add.

Day 14, January 18: Weight 139

-coffee creamer: 250
Lunch:
-pork, fried, fat trimmed, 3 oz: 240
-peas & carrots (mostly peas) 1/2c: 60
-potatoes boiled, 1/2c: 120
-dessert made from sweetpotatoes, 1"x 2" piece: 100
Afternoon:
-cantaloupe, 1/2: 90
Evening:
-gigantic salad with lettuce, cheese and peas: 440

Just thought I'd stop by and say hi! Looks like your doing great, into the 130's and everything! Congrats! Even if it does get harder I'm sure you'll keep it up, and it'll come!

I just have to say I think it's so cool that you raise goats. My husband is working towards becoming a large animals vet and is constantly talking about all the animals,,,goats, cows, sheep etc. we'll get once we get some land...so I'm sure someday I'll be doing the same things as you! Anyways...just thought I'd say great job!

Nancy, I missed a few days but it is reassuring to see you continue to do so well!  I hope the weather holds out for your goats.  14 degrees is cold for upstate NY too and we get lots more cold days than you~ I am sure it does help you burn calories with all that shivering to stay warm haha.  Keep up the good work.

Thanks for stopping by.  You know late in the evening I start thinking about eating, just because it's a habit, and then I think, no someone might look at my posts, and I'm going to stick with it 'cause there are others doing the same.  It's really helpful to do this diary.

It got down to 10 degrees out in the country but the goats made it through just fine. In the South most folks (including us) have only 3 sided shelters with no door, because the summer heat is usually the biggest problem. But we bedded down with lots of straw.

Goats are really characters. My mother is just crazy about them. I do all the bad stuff to them, like give shots, worm medicine, trim hooves. They don't like me very much, but I'm just glad my mother has something she enjoys and that keeps her active.

One of the guys in my carpool has a little farm set-up and is always telling me stories about his goats, pigs, sheep and cattle.  Some of them really have little personalities!

I have a terrible time staying on track in the evening.  I do agree that it is a bad habit, and also boredom, tiredness so I let me guard down, etc.  Sometimes it does keep me on track knowing that I have to tally up those calories at the end of it all!

Nancy, what kind of coffee creamer do you use?  I used to be a coffee freak myself, until the gastroenterologist made me "quit"- but I do still have about 4 cups a day (down from 20 haha).  Anyway, I love flavored creamers, but use the sugar free ones due to my diabetes.  They are also much lower in calories.  I often use fat free half and half as an alternative.  I got tired of "wasting" all those calories on coffee when I could use them for food.  I really do love to eat~

MJ, I use just plain old cheap Richmix, the kind you get at the generic section in the grocery store---10 calories per teaspoon.  I use about a teaspoon per cup. I wish I could learn to drink coffee black. I just put down 250 calories and don't keep track. Hopefully I won't drink near 25 cups a day.   I got the coffee habit in college when I took a class that started at 7:45am 6 days a week (yes Saturday, too) one summer.

Funny thing is regular coffee never bothered me 'til I switched to decaf. Now I get the shakes if I drink regular coffee and sugar without protein (like pancakes with syrup and coffee).  But pancakes with syrup and an egg is OK.

OK, glad you confirmed that you do not drink 25 cups a day, because before I even got to that line I did the math and I was like WOWWWWW!  But I guess it is just easier to overbudget those calories and then not have to plan cup by cup.

Back up to 140. But everything yesterday, except one apple and a little topping, was loaded with salt, and my ears have been ringing (louder than usual  ) all day. So I think that explains it.

Exercise for today: Unloaded 15 new bales of hay (60lbs ea) from truck and stacked it in the garage.   Can't touch that pizza anymore.  No calories left for dinner.

Well, the pizza was very good, but not worth it when you're trying to stick to 1200-1300 calories per day. I used to eat at least half of one of those pizzas, then eat dinner and snacks, too.

Want to lose 10 lbs in 10 more weeks. Still stuck on 140. It looks like I'll have to start assuming 1800 calories a day (BMR, RMR ?, whatever) and reduce intake a little more to make it.

The weather is supposed to warm up starting today. Maybe I'll get more exercise. 1100 is tough to maintain.  Thanks for stopping by.

I think exercise is definitely easier than cutting calories lower than you already have.  It's delicate to balance cutting calories to lose weight while not going too low to send your body into hibernation mode.  I am sure you will find the right combo of calories in and exercise to meet your goal.  You just need to shake things up to break past 140.

Starting today I'm going to assume 1900 calories RMR, instead of 2000, recalculate, and see if that makes more sense. If not, I'll try 1800. Or I may just start counting actual cups of coffee (or try switching to black.)

Day 18, January 22:  Weight 140

-coffee creamer: 250
Lunch:
-WH Grilled Chicken Salad (they put more chicken on this one): 300
Afternoon:
-diet cocoa mix: 30
-hard boiled egg, jumbo: 90
-10 olives: 40
-small orange: 60
Evening:
-grapefruit: 90
-hard boiled egg: 90
-diet cocoa mix: 30

Total: 980 (-920)

Calorie loss to date: 11,950*

*calculations:
[As of yesterday old calorie loss total was: 12,730 (using RMR of 2000). So for 17 days: 12,730-1700 = 11,030 is the new total (based on 1900 RMR). For today -11,030 + (-920) = -11,950 (~3lbs)]

I know if anyone happens to read this they probably think I'm nuts, but I'm really just trying to zero in on my basic metabolism rate based on the last 18 days.

You could always measure out your creamer into a separate container for the day and count calories that way.  You could measure out 250 cals worth and see how much of that you are actually using each day.  It seems like your calculations and formulas help you stay on track.  You have already lost 5 lbs, right, so it must be working!

MJ, that is a great idea!  Why didn't I think of that?  I'll start today.

Yes I'm down 5lbs, but 2.5 of that came the very first day, so that's not real weight, just reduced volume of food in stomach and water, I think.

Thanks.

Don't sell yourself short!  5 lbs is 5 lbs!  You are doing a great job.  Keep at it and I am sure you will reach goal.   Persistence really is the key- if we don't give up, and keep putting in the work, we can achieve our goals!

Well, MJ, if I ever get down to the weight I want to be, the impossible part for me will be maintenance. I know as soon as I quit counting calories I'll start creeping back up. Stupid! I wish humans came with a built in calorie counter, so you could just look at it and know when to quit.

Maybe if I attached one of those pedometer thingys to my wrist, and set it to count the number of times my hand goes to my mouth....

Thanks for stopping by my boring diary. I read everyone's diary, and I sure don't lead as exciting and hectic life as you young folks do.

Oh, that would be so nice if we had calorie counters!  We could just stop when we reached our max!  It would take all the work, and some of that guessing, out of trying to figure out the counts.  I know for me, when I stopped consciously counting calories I put back on several lbs.  I guess I know that it will have to become a pretty ingrained part of my life or I won't be able to maintain.

Back up to 139 this morning. Salt, especially salty soup yesterday, was the culprit. And today my mother has a big pot of homemade vegetable soup ready when I get there---enough for at least 20 people---and of course I have to take some home. It was very good, though.

But live without salt forever---no way!  BP has always been low normal, so I'll just learn to live with it. At least I can explain it, and it will "pass."

Exercise: Today was my "other" life. We fenced in a huge pine tree so the goats wouldn't kill it by chewing on the bark. This involves pounding 6 T-posts into the ground and stretching fence wire around them. Cut down some trees the goats already killed, with my mini-chain saw. Took us about 2 hours.

Those goats and I have a love/hate relationship. I happen to like trees.

Day 23, January 27: Weight 139 (63 kg)

-coffee creamer: <110
Brunch:
-beef veg soup, 3.5c: 420
Afternoon:

The goats... well, hope the fence keeps them away from that tree!  At least you got a great workout!  I am sure using a chain saw is very physical and burns lots of calories.

Not really.  The hard part is cranking it up.  Then you just pull a little trigger.   I like things that allow you to do big jobs with very little effort.  Makes you feel empowered!!  Most men knew this all along and fooled us into thinking it was hard work.

Today was sort of tough and it started early, but I learned something. Usually I don't want anything to eat before noon, but not today. Probably because I usually go out to lunch with a friend and today I didn't. Somehow if I know I'm going out to eat it's easy to just wait. And at a restaurant there is automatic portion control and no leftovers in the fridge. As long as there is something healthy to choose from.

Day 24, January 28: Weight 138 (62.6 kg)

-coffee creamer: 140
-diet cocoa: 30
-sugar coated bitesize shredded wheat, 1c: 200

-Mom's beef veg soup, 1c: 120
-banana: 110
Afternoon:
-pinto beans, 1/2c: 110
-cheese, 1oz: 120

Evening:

Nightcap:
-diet cocoa mix: 30

Total: 1010 (-890)

Thanks goodness for diet cocoa. It's gotten me out of a few jams. Pretty bad if you've ever tasted real cocoa, but when you're on a diet it seems delicious.

Got to get a digital scale. The only time I can measure even a half pound is when it's exactly half way between a 5 and 10 lb mark.

Found another trick. I measure out 1/4c of coffee creamer each morning (120 cals). If there's any left over at the end of the day, I dump it into the diet cocoa mix and ad a NutraSweet. Makes the cocoa much better, less counting calories also. I love you, MJ!

Day 25, January 29: Weight 137.5 (62.4 kg)

-coffee creamer: 120
-hard boiled egg, jumbo: 90
-lg banana: 120
Lunch:
-sugar-coated bitesize shredded wheat with coffee, 1c: 200
Afternoon:

Evening:
-grapefruit: 80
-oatmeal, 1/2c: 150
-sugar, 2tsp, small dab of butter: 50

That's a great idea with the creamer, to make it easier to track and to make the cocoa yummier!  I think those little tricks are what we all need to learn to make eating healthy more "doable" in the long run~

Hey Doug!  Eat a grapefruit just before you go to bed.  That will make you get up a couple of times in the middle of the night:wink:.

Still 137 this morning!   So I ate half a banana for breakfast to celebrate.  I never eat breakfast.  This will probably make me want to eat all day now.

The banana for breakfast made my stomach growl all morning. Could be a bad choice on an empty stomach, or maybe it's something you have to get used to (eating breakfast, I mean)?

Had a chocolate attack early and tried making a 3 cup package of sugar free pudding using 2 cups of skim milk. Thicker, but still not good. If I didn't see it, I wouldn't have known it was chocolate. How do you keep it from being lumpy? No more when that's gone. Just rambling on here....

Nancy, I used to make a snack with sf pudding mix, 1 c. fat free milk, and 1 c. lite or ff cool whip.  Very light and fluffy, kind of like a mousse.  I will have to try that!  I do think your body has to get used to breakfast.  I never used to eat til lunch time and when I started dieting, one of the first changes I tried to make was eating breakfast.  It would really throw me off at first, and I had to try to figure out what worked best.  Glad to hear the scale still reads 137.  You are powering forward~

Got to get some work done, the ToDo list keeps growing. This dieting stuff is dominating my life and giving me an excuse to procrastinate. That, and the weather.

So... I just found a webpage that describes how to make a simple peg loom. I want to try and make one. We have been piling up baling twine (hay bales for goats) and my mom wants to try and make an outdoor floormat from it. She likes to make things out of stuff that's otherwise useless. You could probably buy a floormat at the Dollar Store for a dollar, but what the heck, I like to learn to make things. Doesn't that sound exciting?

Thanks guys.  I hope it doesn't come back when the weather warms up.  Supposed to be 16 degrees here tonight, and my downstairs heater is being cranky again.  I hate heat pumps in the winter.    When summer comes, and it warms up I always gain a couple of pounds like overnight.  Guess it's water retention.

Black coffee, yuck!  I use fat free half and half, it has like 20 calories per tbsp.  I cannot tolerate black coffee arghhhh!  In the summer I always manage to lose weight because the clothes cover less, so that motivates me, and I also get outside more to swim, walk, hike, bike, etc.  Can't wait!  Sorry it's a tougher time for you though.

Yeah, MJ, I know what you mean, I hate black coffee too, but anything warm seems almost good now.  I haven't worn shorts in years, and it's so hot here in the summer.  As always, thanks for stopping by.

Exercise is so sporadic---reasonable amount every 3rd day, zero otherwise. But I'm keeping track of it to see if it explains any fluctuations later.

Unloaded 15 more bales of hay (alfalfa/orchard grass, quite pricey here) and stacked it in the garage, raked out goat "lounging area" of barn and shoveled away stuff. These goats are so spoiled. Total time: 2hrs.

Today I didn't get hungry all day. Must be the vegetables. Or maybe I'm getting used to this? Sure hope so. We'll see....

Day 32, February 5: Weight 136 (61.7 kg)

-coffee creamer: 100
Lunch:

This evening I felt unusually tired, so decided to try the tea with heavy sugar that worked once before, and go a little over the usual calories. It worked again, but then.....

...while posting this realized I made a double entry (a big one) in the food list, so that explains it. Could have had something much better than sugar, but at least I sort of learned what my lower limit is.

Tried making out a plan of what to eat today and when to eat it, because my cupboards are nearly bare. Then I started working on this peg loom. It was fun because there was no rush. Lost track of time and went way past the schedule all day because of fooling around with it. This worked out well diet-wise.

Also drank 64oz of lemonade. I'll probably gain 5 lbs tomorrow.

What is a peg loom? Maybe that's what we need to do, get something to distract us from food for a while. We get so engrossed.... food isn't even in our thoughts!!!

A peg loom is a simple device that allows you to make rugs from scraps of material or yarn. Here is a link showing a picture. You weave long strips of cloth back and forth around the pegs and pull strings through with the pegs.  I've got it almost done, but the pegs are too tight.

http://woollywormhead.blogspot.com/2005/10/how-to-make-your-own-peg-loom.html

Still 135. I can't believe it. Admittedly lots of trips to the john, though.

Yes only 8 lbs to go, but I think it will be much harder from now on.

Thanks, MJ.  I know if I were on my own I'd probably be quitting soon, because it's getting so boring! But posting on here just might keep me going to the end. It really helps a lot.  We'll see.

This marks the end of 5 weeks. Started at 145, now at 135. The 1900 calorie maintenance figure, on average, seems to be about right. According to that I should have lost approx 8 pounds. Discounting the 2-3 lbs water lost the first day or two, that adds up.

So exercising only 2 and 1/3 times a week, and loafing the rest of the time, must be classified as "moderately active" according to the calculator on this website? Hmm... Maybe I'm overestimating some of the food calories.

I've reduced the goal weight from 130 to 127 because I'm expecting to put 2-3 lbs back on automatically if calories are increased up to 1900 per day, assuming I ever get there.

Estimating the food really is a tough thing!  When I first started calorie counting, I ate nothing except what I measured myself, which taught me how to judge portions, etc.  Either way, you are doing great!  You lost 10 lbs in 5 weeks... just to put it in perspective, I lost about 5 lbs in the same time period!  You go girl~

Hey, 8 lbs is still awesome!  Plus, you have been steady in your loss, no big plateaus or falling off the wagon (like me, with all the bruises from doing it lots!).

The high temp here was 73 today and yesterday. We often have this really warm spell in late winter, the flowers and plants come out thinking it's spring, only to get frozen later. Hope it doesn't hurt our poor little scrawny peach tree. Just discovered a huge bag full of frozen peach halves in my freezer from last summer that I forgot were there. These are really great for treats.

It seems like eating oatmeal as the last snack of the day before bed makes me have weird and vivid dreams:shock:. Cheese does it, too. Anyone else notice this?

Never have any vivid dreams, oatmeal or not!  It's cool that you are down to 134.  I wish I was seeing as much success as you... but I am not nearly as steady on the good eats!  Your work is definitely paying off.

Hmmm, how was the stovetop w/ no butter?  Did you substitute anything else?  I haven't had it in forever but would add it back if there is a lo-cal way to prepare it!

MJ:  No substitutes.  You have to add more water, and it's hard to get it right and get it mixed up well.  If you add too much water, it's kinda mushy. Too little, and the bread has some hard chunks.  If I can get it right, I think it's good.

Dropped a pound unexpectedly!! Today I had a frozen low cal meal and added 2/3c of mixed vegetables, because there was so much gravy. Why do they load those dinners with so much gravy? Anyway the amount of stuff on the plate was gigantic compared to what I've been eating. Supposedly only 320 calories, but I'm skeptical. Hope that pound is still gone tomorrow morning after that. Two months ago I could have eaten twice that without blinking an eye, and it would have been spaghetti with meatballs, probably.

Day 40, February 13: Weight 133 (60.3 kg)

-coffee creamer: 40
Lunch:
-grilled chicken salad: 300
Dinner:
-frozen dinner w 2/3c mixed vegs: 320

-lots of black coffee and sf lemonade

Nancy, I have had the same thoughts about the quantities I can eat once I start payin attention to calories.  There was a time that I could easily eat 3-4 slices of pizza.  Now, I can be satisfied with one slice with toppings and perhaps a large salad. I think the key is to find those low cal alternatives that fill you up, like your diet meal with extra veggies.  Even when I am counting calories, I almost feel like veggies and fruit should be"free" because it is so hard to overeat those items!  You are doing awesome and will be at your goal sooner than you thought.  Pat on back to you!

Oh, that's so not true, Lami, but thanks.  I've read the diaries of other folks on here. There are really some inspirations.   I haven't even reached my little goal yet.

The thing is I don't have to cook for anyone but myself or buy food for anyone else. That makes it soooo much easier.  I can keep all the tempting bad food completely out of the house.

My mother made sauerkraut balls for lunch today. These are sausage and kraut rolled into 1" balls and broiled. These are sooo good, and I brought some home. Big mistake. They nagged at me all evening. I finally just decided to eat them for snacks and get it over with so they won't be there to haunt me tomorrow. Can I claim I was on the Atkins diet today?

Almost made the transition to black coffee at home.

Day 41, February 14: Weight 133 (60.3 kg)

Lunch:
-7 sauerkraut balls: 280
-1/4c carrots, boiled w butter: 40

If you rule out bananas, pinto beans, and potatoes.  Of course those are, by far, my three most favorite.

Of course, we always like the exceptions to the rule the most!  Glad to hear those kraut balls are gone!  Even with eating them up, you still stayed in your calorie limit.  Good work!  I agree, it would be easier if I only had to feed myself.  I would never have ice cream in the house, for one!  Or chips.  Or cookies.  You get the picture~

Holy cow you have lost a lot of weight Nancy!  How come the rest of us have such a hard time of it?  I think I might need some of those bales of hay to move around.  I use to help hubs with stuff like that, then I got a computer and got lazy!  You and I are almost the same weight.  I think you're going to leave me in the dust here pretty quick though!

Hi Sassykat!  I know I'm doing a lot of things wrong, like no breakfast, and calories under the suggested minimum, but I'm just too impatient. If it drags on too long without seeing results I tend to quit. I'll probably end up just a blob of fat with no muscle to lift any hay bales.

Improvised for lunch today. Toasted a leftover heel of bread, melted an oz of sharp cheddar cheese on it, and piled cooked broccoli pieces on top.

Forced myself to sit down at the table and cut this tiny little thing up into pieces with a knife and fork like it was a steak dinner (rather than just shove it in my mouth and go). If my friends had seen me, except maybe some of you guys, they would have thought I was nuts.

Day 43, February 16: Weight 132 (59.9 kg)

Exercise:  I finally came close to you guys on exercise. It was hoof-trimming day!  We have the big dairy breed goats, 160-180 lbs each. You drag the goat to the barn, tie it up, pick up each hoof, trim it and plane it flat on the bottom, goat kicks and jerks its leg all the time and pushes against you like a mule. It took me 2 hours to do 6 goats---I'm still not very good at it. Cardio part was running back up to the house for things I forgot, like steel-toed shoes.

Day 44, February 17: Weight 132 (59.9 kg)

One of the guys I carpool with has started a small farm with sheep, cows, etc.  They had goats but they were a terrible hassle and got rid of them. They were always getting into things or getting away.  Sounds like you really got a farm workout today.  Functional fitness, right?

...or tearing up things!!!   I got them 5 years ago, and they do get on my nerves a lot.  But I made a commitment, so they have a forever home here, and I will take care of them the best I know how.

They are kinda sweet once in awhile.

An observation about yesterday:  The barn for our goats is about 2-300 yards from the house, all uphill one way. Last fall I would huff and puff up that hill. Yesterday I didn't even breathe heavy and I was going fast, too! Haven't been doing cardio exercises either, so it was all due to weight. I can't believe how much difference a little bit of extra weight makes.

It's always nice to feel the results of the weight loss in how our bodies operate, and the ability to do things with greater ease is definitely a key benefit to weight loss.  By spring you will be running faster than those goats haha!

I'm going to whisper this because I don't believe it..."Morning weight was 130."...I think it's a fluke, maybe dehydration. If it's still the same Monday, then I'll believe it.

Tomorrow I have lunch with my cousin from Ohio. My mother will probably cook up a huge meal, with homemade bread, probably cake or pie, too, just for the 3 of us. My cousin is way overweight and it has brought on diabetes, high cholesterol, and high BP for him.

This will be an interesting test. I'm NOT going to be fussy about food. I'm going to eat some of everything. But I'm NOT going to bring a bunch of leftovers home with me, either (I hope).

Day 48, February 21: Weight 130 (59.0 kg)

Brunch:
-meatloaf, sm slice: 150

Well I couldn't have been more wrong about today. My cousin arrived at 11:00 am and had stopped an hour before he got to our house and ate lunch, because he said he got too hungry. My mom guessed that was what he'd do, so she only had ham and cheese sandwiches and homemade banana nut bread. He still ate some. He was probably just being polite.

We had a good visit, caught up on all the gossip about the relatives in Ohio, and talked about our ancestry on his side of the family. I learned a lot of things about my dad's family. Then he went on to have dinner and spend the night with friends in Conyers, GA. So everything worked out just fine. Then we ran down to the goat barn and put out hay.

Still ate more than I had to. It will be interesting to see if upping calories a little, and salt, will affect morning weigh in tomorrow. I'm posting this menu early because it helps me stick with it, and I am determined not to have any more snacks the rest of the evening.

Day 49, February 22: Weight 130 (59.0 kg)

Breakfast:
-coffee with creamer: 30
Lunch:
-ham sandwich on bun: 370
-banana nut bread (4"x2"x1/2"): 350 (?)
-sweet pickles: 100
-potato chips, 10: 100
Dinner:
-ham sandwich on bread: 350
Snacks:
-black coffee and sf lemonade

Congrats on losing some more weight.  Sounds like things worked out well with your cousin's visit so you didn't face a big challenge with bread and pie on the table!  I do like your idea of going and enjoying the meal but not bringing any leftovers home with you.

The calorie counting has worked so well for you.  You have had a significant weight loss in a short time, and seem so committed.  You are a good role model for the rest of us~

Gosh MJ, that's a sweet thing to say. I can't let myself fail now. But everyone has their own twist on doing things. That's what's great about this forum, and what makes it so enjoyable to follow.

I agree with MJ.  You are quite an inspiration Nancy!  I don't know that I would have the stamina to trim hooves.  That's hard work.  And bales of hay are heavy!  Every time I wimp out and feel like a pansy pants I'm going to think of you Nancy.  I'm going to toughen up and get myself in gear!

Well I made it into the 120's today! I have these old temperamental spring-loaded scales. Usually if you get on them with your left foot first, they weigh one pound less than if you get on them with your right foot first. Go figure. I don't post a weight change here until it passes the "either foot first test." Anyway I'm motivated again. Was dragging a bit yesterday.

After lunch we finished trimming hooves of the remaining 6 goats. And, Sassykat, I didn't have as much strength as usual.  Maybe I am losing some muscle.

Sort of started exercising last night. It was pretty pathetic really.  Various crunches and side leg lifts until it burned (it only took about 10 each ), some low impact jumping jacks several times, and walked half a mile (out of necessity, not choice).

Day 52, February 25: Weight 129 (58.5 kg)

Breakfast:
-coffee with creamer: 20
Lunch:
-thin slice of pork, fried: 300 ?

Hey, any kind of exercise is good!  It will help you maintain or build muscle so you can wrangle goats!  I got a good laugh about your scale story, I have my rituals too!

The last 3 days I've had "jelly legs." Decided to up the calories a little and see what happens. Will also try to do exercise on non-goat days. Maybe focus on squats, lunges, and leg lifts this evening.

Nancy, I think it is a good idea to your calories a bit if you are trying to tone, otherwise you might be burning off muscle by eating too little and then burning some off!  Hope it helps!  If not, you can always tweak it again.

Update:  Just did 3 directions of lunges, squats, grapevines, 4 directions of leg lifts, fire hydrants---all 12 times on each leg/side. It burned every time---like ta killed me. Then tacked on three different kinds of crunches and some jumping jacks.

Scared my  :cat::cat:. One hid under the bed. I've had them indoors since September and they'd never seen me move that way before.

Yesterday I upped calories by 200, ate most of my food after 6pm, felt stuffed at bedtime and weighed 132 (couldn't resist checking). Dreading the morning weigh in, but still at 129! Maybe it was the exercise! Can 3 lbs just evaporate through body heat overnight?

I did the same exercises tonight, will skip tomorrow, substitute some other exercises Sunday, and see what happens.

It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow. We have to figure out how to get 3 bales of hay into the goat barn, in the rain, with the goats in there with us, and not get mauled. Must remember to wear my steel-toed shoes. Wish we had one of those big barns where you can store everything and have lots of room.

We might get some snow tonight! Today is clean-up-the-leftovers day, so food plan is set for the day.

This last pound better go soon, because I'm beginning to hate vegetables and salads. They were good at first, when there was nothing else to eat and still keep calories low, but if I end up hating healthy food, the weight will just come back. Maybe substitute fruit? Will go shopping for fruit tomorrow if we are not snowed in.

Day 56, March 1: Weight 128 (57.6 kg)

Breakfast:
-coffee creamer: 20
Lunch:
-egg sandwich: 250
Dinner:
-Salis steak frozen dinner + 2/3c mixed vegs + tbsp corn: 270
Snacks:
-peach half w dab of cottage cheese: 60
-2 slices boiled potato: 60
-sf choc pudding + banana: 230
-oatmeal (1/2c), peaches: 270 (omitted)
-sm salad, lettuce + 1 tbsp dressing: 40 (omitted)
-black coffee and sf lemonade
-hard candy, 2 pcs: 50

Total: 940 (-960)

Calorie loss to date: 45,280 (-12.9 lbs)

Edited to add: Food plan wasn't set after all. We WERE snowed in with only 6 inches.  The South isn't prepared for snow.  Trees and limbs down everywhere. Neighbor's tree fell and knocked the power line from my house at 5pm. All my neighbors had power.  Couldn't cook the oatmeal and didn't want to open fridge to let out cold. Substitute 2 pcs of hard candy.

Nancy, I often weigh about 3 lbs more at night than in the morning.  They say weight fluctuates througout the day.  I always am my lightest first thing, that's why I weigh then .  You're doing a great job!  Did you get snow there?  We have maybe 3 inches or more here.  Just when I thought spring was coming... but at least we aren't getting a foot like some other areas of NY state!

They came out and fixed my power line at 10:30 pm!!. I had given up for the night. Sure do appreciate the guys that work for the power company. Too cold to weigh in today. It was 48 degrees in my kitchen at 9pm. Strange diet today. Still didn't want to open my refrigerator doors trying to save stuff in the freezer.  Supposed to get to 20 tonight.

MJ, the roads were too icy Sunday night and Monday morning to get out. Went to Waffle House once and had to eat take-out in the car with the heater running, because there was a line at every eating place---folks just trying to get somewhere where there was some heat. Ah, the joys of eating Wheat Thins and counting calories by flashlight...in your parka.

That power outage has caused a time distortion.  It seems like a week since Sunday (and at 128 lbs).    Going to have to hide those Wheat Thins, I'm afraid.

Did some experimenting: Had a banana for breakfast yesterday. Stomach started growling in about 3 hrs. Today I had oatmeal and half a banana. Felt stuffed. This is basically just adding volume. But this time growling stomach came later, almost 4 hours. Either the volume or the tough oats kept stomach busy longer. This is progress.

I can't stand a growling stomach. Makes me think I'm hungry and I tend to overeat at lunch.

Tomorrow I'll try substituting some protein and see what happens. With no breakfast at all, stomach never starts growling before lunch.   It must happen while I'm asleep.

Day 60, March 5: Weight 128 (58.1 kg)

Breakfast:
-oatmeal, 1/2c: 150
-banana, 1/2: 50

I made it! 127 this morning!

I'm trying to visualize the volume of 18 lbs of fat and pictured piling 18 one-pound packages of butter on top of each other.   Would that be equivalent?

Protein for breakfast experiment didn't work. The only things in the house with significant protein were peanuts and canned ham spread. The ham spread was 70% fat and VERY salty. Didn't matter anyway because a friend called for early lunch (within 3 hrs) at the Waffle House. Went grocery shopping. Will try again Sunday.

Tomorrow we have to ride around the fenceline (7500 ft) at my mother's and repair any damage from the snow storm. We have an EZGO gasoline two-seater utility vehicle.  It goes almost anywhere.  The goats are too spoiled and smart to try to find a way out.

Did more leg exercises last night. Upping calories to 1300 for a couple of days.

We spent all afternoon clearing brush and trees off the fence. Only one large tree (20" diameter Sourwood) though, and thankfully it was rotten, so it sawed off easily. Fence is broken down completely in one spot, and we'll have to go back and repair it. Luckily it's the farthest away from the goat barn. They never go back there.

The whole afternoon was sort of a combination of upper body aerobics and weight lifting, for 5 hours. We went as fast as we could go in order to make the complete circle before exhaustion. I took 4 pcs of hard candy with me and it seemed to give an extra spurt of energy when necessary. It was 77 degrees. Don't even want to move this evening.

Was clearly noticeable today that triceps and deltoids do not get a good workout just lifting hay bales. This is something I'll have to focus on for exercises.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Day 62, March 7: Weight 127 (57.6 kg)

77 degrees, oh you big tease!  It got up to around 60 here yesterday and I thought we were having a heat wave!  I always do eggs for my protein breakfast, or turkey sausage.  Your options didn't sound too yummy!

MJ, if I'm working outside, I'd prefer the 60's.  Got sunburned yesterday!! If I had my way and all the money, I'd have two houses, one in the North and one here, and come back here only from November through March.

Protein for breakfast didn't help.  Maybe I need to give it more than one day.   But I'm thinking now it's either pure volume or fiber that stops the growling (for me).   Gonna narrow it down soon.

Completely forgot about DST Sunday. Went to bed "too early" because of it last night, woke up in the middle of the night and had a craving for the rest of a cold leftover ground beef patty in the fridge. Weird!

I'm still eating 1300 calories because it has almost become a habit now, and I'm actually sort of afraid of easing back up.  Old habits might sneak back?    OTOH, there are still some old clothes that don't fit like they used to at this weight. That really bugs me. Top has gone from 36C to 34B, but waist hasn't gone down proportionally. It's probably just old age creeping up on me.

At 1300 cals/day it should take 6 days to lose a pound, rather than 4 (@ 1000/day), and tomorrow will be day 5 at 127, so I guess I'll stick with 1300 at least a couple more days and see what happens.

It was 83oF here at 4pm!

Day 64, March 9: Weight 127 (57.6 kg)

Took my mom grocery shopping, cleared a few fallen limbs from her front yard, took the goats some hay. Not much exercise today. Still doing squats, lunges, and some arm exercises in the evenings.   Not very strenuous, though.

I'm seriously thinking about painting my kitchen cabinets a light color, maybe even white. They are old and currently dark wood. I've been thinking about replacing them anyway, and it's a chance to experiment. If it doesn't work out, not much lost, and who knows, I might even like them and save a lot of money.

Day 65, March 10: Weight 127 (57.6 kg)

Breakfast:

Nancy, I love your scientific approach to weight loss, with formulas and al!  It definitely works.  I like the idea of painting the cupboards.  Sometimes we can make do with what we have, doesn't always have to be new!  My new outlook since our economy tanked~

The exercise clearing the fence must have counted for some calorie burn, because I've been fairly accurate counting calories lately, and this pound dropped in only 5 days. It was rather intense for 5 hours and could have accounted for 500, I suppose.

I've not considered any calorie loss due to exercise, because I'm very irregular about it, just tried to find an average maintenance level.  I'm also a bit skeptical about the calculations---just accept it as a bonus. This one I'll take.

But now that makes me want to make it an even 20 pounds loss. I'm keeping on for a few more days. Maybe up calories to 1400. That would take a week with no more fence clearing.

Sorry to be so analytical about this.

Cleared out one upper stand-alone kitchen cupboard, for practice. Took off door & hinges, washed it down and sanded finish in prep for primer. Then I found some articles on the internet about how to paint old laminate countertops and cover with epoxy so they look like stone. Hmmm.

I think I'm just doing this to avoid starting on income taxes. Always put them off until the last minute, and then end up missing some forms/information. Next thing I knew it was 10pm and missed one of the planned snacks for the day. So I will just eat the last one and call it a night.

Just decided to nibble on grapes and wheat thins all morning instead of breakfast. That took care of the pre-lunch "growls" just fine.  Why didn't I think of that?

Wow!  You have done what I have not seen anyone, and I mean ANYONE on this board do before, and you therefore prove that it can be done (which is inspiring).  You have consistently gone down in weight, just down down down.  I think there was ONE time since you started posting where you went up like .5 lbs or something, otherwise the numbers steadily drop drop drop.  Not even the bleeding time makes you gain weight, although maybe you are past the bleeding time????

That is really awesome AND also it totally proves that weight loss can be done at any age.  I hear people WAY younger than you, like 20 or even 30 years younger than you complaining that they just can't lose weight because they're old and their metabolism has slowed down.  People can get the bodies they want no matter where they are age-wise.

And it's also cool that you don't really "exercise" besides the normal stuff that you have to do every day.  That is very cool!  It reminds me of that "the world is my gym" commercial that kaiser has out, have you seen it, it's cute.

I gotta tell you, my hat's off to you, woman!  You have done great!  Steady weight loss in a short amount of time, no screw-ups, no binges, WOW!!!  That is really so great!  Thanks for posting!

Terrabyte, thank you so much for those nice words!

The lack of fluctuations surprised me, too. I have an old set of scales so I can't read changes smaller than "half way between the marks." Yes, I'm past the TOTM's. And also salt control and sticking with about the same number of calories per day helps. At the beginning I was eating a lot of soup cause it is low calorie and filling, but I can't take soup without salt, so I gave it up.

The main reason I've stuck it out is this diary, not kidding. All the encouraging words.  Whenever I think of eating something I shouldn't, I think, NO! I'll have to post this for everyone to see. And that's why I decided at the beginning to put down every single thing I ate.

ps. I have these two fat pads on the sides of my waist.  I really want those things OFF.  Sure hope one more pound makes them go away, but I'm not betting money on it.

Hey, Nancy, good luck with your fat pads haha... never heard them called that before!  Either way I echo what Terabyte said tonight, you are awesome and a great role model to the rest of us to show it can be done... with consistency and good choices.  BRAVO!  Are you going to do the counters too now?  What color are you doing the cabinets?  Sounds like a huge project, but at least you get to avoid those taxes~

If not fat pads, then what is the official name for them?  I'll see how the cupboards come out first before thinking about the counter top any more.

Cleaned out the gutters on my house this afternoon. Climbing up and down the ladder should take the place of at least a couple of squats, shouldn't it? I'll concentrate on arm exercises tonight.

This diet/diary has given me a chance to analyze eating patterns like never before. Before I always overate in the evenings. My fear was that I wouldn't make it through this diet at night without cheating. At first there was little planning, just eat a little whenever you get hungry, but save the most calories for evening.  Now the dust has settled and just 5 planned mini-meals a day seemed to work best. For example (at say 1300 cals/day):

-grazing in the early morning with low calorie things (~200 cals)
-two bigger meals (lunch and dinner) (300 to 400 cals ea)
-two substantial snacks (~200 cals, evening)

The urge to eat in the evening has dropped off lately. Now I find I get too hungry before dinner, have too much planned for the evening, then have to make myself eat just before bed. That's just plain silly!

So, better late than never, I'm going to move dinner about an hour later (~7pm) and shift one snack from evening to mid afternoon. I think that will work better. I hope I can get into an eating pattern like this forever and then just increase the calories proportionally when I go on maintenance. AND STICK WITH IT!!! We'll see...

Of course today I ate lunch at my mother's so not a good test. She insists on cooking for me when I visit, although I tell her it's not necessary. Her lunches are always early and more like dinners. But she has been really supportive and great about cooking healthy food since I started this. I don't think she cooks regular meals for herself when I'm not there since my father died (~3 yrs ago), so I don't insist, because it's better for her, too, I think.

Whew! A bit long-winded today, I'm afraid.  TG those WheatThins are almost gone!

Day 68, March 13: Weight 126 (57.2 kg)

Morning:
-Wheat Thins(16): 130
-grapes(20): 70

-pork, broiled, ~2.5oz: 250
-peas & carrots (2/3c): 70
-potato (1/2, v small), 1/2 pat butter: 70
-sweet potato (~1" slice across, ~1/4c): 50?
Dinner (7:00):
-frozen SSteak dinner + 2/3c peas & carrots: 260
-diet Sunkist

I will never buy Wheat Thins again! I wanted them gone, and ate a ridiculous amount of them starting just before midnight, because that was how many there were left. I'll count them all for today rather than edit yesterday. Bread and crackers are usually my downfall, but whole wheat bread....well I chew and chew and chew and there doesn't ever seem to be any flavor. I must be missing something (like tastebuds).

I made a grilled cheese with 1 oz of cheese and could hardly find the cheese on the sandwich.  According to those measurements I used to eat 4 oz on grilled cheese, and sometimes had two.  Geesh, 2 of those would be 1200 calories!  No wonder I got fat.

The few squats and lunges every day are actually paying off a little. I can already feel more spring in my step going up the stairs.

Day 69, March 14: Weight 125.5 (56.9 kg)

-Wheat Thins (reduced fat) (30): 260
-grapes(10) & coffee creamer: 70

Dinner (6:30):
-frozen broc, pot, cheese entree + 2/3c peas & carrots: 300
-diet sunkist

-wheat toast, broccoli, cheese (1/2 oz): 150

I try all kinds of tricks to make the low cal stuff yummy.  For instance, for grilled cheese I use two slices of low cal bread, usually = 140 total, and then add two slices of reduced fat cheese = 100 cals.  That way I am at least still somewhat fulfilled!  I do agree that once you start paying attention to calories, it really brings to light some of the decisions that got us to be overweight to begin with.  I used to eat all these prepackaged noodle mixes with dinner, and tons of ice cream, and regular soda... YIKES!!

Isn't it frightening to think of how you "used to" eat?  Grated, I don't type out my every morsel on here...I do on another site...but I put my breakdown of numbers...that in itself makes me think twice when I go to grab something to eat.  I have made healthy choices for a few years now but NOTHING is healthy if it's not kept in moderation.  For instance...I'd grab a protein bar if I was hungry while out shopping...some of those things have over 300 cals and 14 grams of fat!! :dizzy: That's a MEAL!

I think you're doing a great job.  I may not post much on here but I do look forward t reading your posts.

Well I cleared the pile of junk off my desk, cleaned it and sprayed some furniture polish on it, got out my tax stuff and stacked it in the middle. Haven't looked at it though.  I can't ignore it so easily now.

Took 8 more cuttings off of a shrub in my yard and put them in sand with root growth hormone on them. The first two I did a month ago took off rooting. I only did 2 because I didn't think it would work.

Did the final sanding of the test cupboard and put the primer on the inside. This project will take all spring probably. I forgot how much I hate painting trim work. But it's too late to turn back now.

Anyhow to bring all this back to the subject at hand, when I have a project to do, I forget about eating. Today was a good day.

Well, that's an even 20 lbs down, and 10 weeks exactly, so I'm going to add 100 calories starting today. I'll either just increase the portions of some of the things I eat now, or maybe swap out for something different at lunch or dinner for a week. Ordered a BLT at the Waffle House today, which should have had 3 slices of bacon, but this time they put 5 on it! I did notice it "sticks with you" a long time, though.

If I increase by 100 calories/day at the beginning of every week it will take 5 weeks to get to 1900 (maintenance) and still represent a deficit during that time:

    -(500+400+300+200+100)cals x 7 days = (-1500)x7 = 10,500 (~3 lbs)

But I don't expect to see a loss on the scales because I'll bet it will be canceled out by gradual water gain when I bring back more volume (and more salt).

Today we gave the goats their CD/T shots (type C,D bacteria & Tetanus). I had to learn how to do this, because getting the vet out to do it would cost nearly $100, and the bottle of vaccine plus 12 needles & syringes cost less than $10. I think I hate it worse than the goats do. Really doubt they need it every year, but afraid to take a chance.

Calculated the calories in my mother's banana nut bread from the recipe (after it was too late). Can you believe 2700 for a 9" loaf!  Made it tricky to stick to the 1400 today.

WOW, that banana bread really took a chunk of calories out of the day!  I never calculate stuff like that, just eat it and feel guilty in a general sense because I know it is too many calories... but still never would have thought THAT MANY!

Lost the bet with myself already.  Morning's weigh in was 123 (left foot, right foot, 3 times in a row)---just skipped 124 altogether!   It's got to go back up tomorrow morning, makes no sense.

MJ, you are teasing me about the taxes.   I finally started filling out the first page and got stuck on line 13.

The bag of homegrown peach halves is gone. They were so convenient when you need to add just a few calories.  We've got blossoms this year, but I don't see any bees around.

Up to 124 this morning---that makes more sense. Picked up 12 more bales of hay for the goats at 9:00am to deliver to my mom's tomorrow. Finished the primer on the test cabinet. Plan to pull out taxes and started compiling the info to fill in dreaded "line 13 (Attach Schedule D)" tonight. One 1099 missing---surprise (not).

I've decided to stick with the calorie plan (upping by only 100 each week), no matter what happens.

Grazing in the morning helps, but can't pace myself with grapes. It has to be something to work for, like walking downstairs to the refrigerator for each grape. I made a meatloaf sandwich which was just close enough to a meatball sandwich to be a good test, but not close enough to be good. That's fine. I hope I never eat another real meatball sandwich.

After creating an account at the company with the missing 1099 form, and 7 attempts to download it from their site (crashing IE each time), I gave up and did a more thorough search of the house and found it. No more excuses.

Glad to hear that you are making progress on those taxes.  I am doing my sister's and need to have them done when she comes to visit next weekend... I thought about it, that's as far as I got...

Weight is still on the downswing.  Must have been nice to get a peek at 123!

I learned something yesterday by keeping this diary. I can't eat a lot of cantaloupe on an empty stomach.

As far as I know I'm very healthy, but I do have mild reactive low blood sugar, which comes on when I eat sugar on an empty stomach with no protein, and made worse with caffeinated coffee. About an hour afterward I get the jitters, weakness, rapid heart rate, cold sweats. It's actually a bit scarey when it happens.

The first time I noticed this was trying to play tennis one day about 30 years ago, so I don't think it's anything to worry about, or I'd be dead by now. But you mistakenly think you are VERY hungry and tend to overeat to stop it.

In fact eating sugar stops it quickly, but sugar alone, I think, just tends to throw you into another cycle. You need to combine it with protein, or possibly complex carbs. It's really hard to find credible info on the intenet, just blogs, forums, .com's trying to sell something, and folks with no credentials blowing smoke. WebMD doesn't mention anything about eating protein or complex carbs with the sugar, but I know protein works every time, from experience.

I actually thought I had kicked this for good after changing to decaf coffee about 6 mos ago. But yesterday it came back. Now I'm wondering if it affects you more if your weight is lower?

I found out that cantaloupe and watermelon are among the fruits highest in sugar. I always assumed it was just *refined* sugar that caused the problem, but evidently it's *all* kinds of sugar.

Rethinking breakfast (again).

This is especially a problem for me chosing breakfast. It explains why grazing all morning is better than a bad choice for breakfast. I either have to be careful about choosing breakfast, or skip it altogether, like I've done most of my life.

So today I'm eating a chicken sandwich with whole wheat bread for breakfast. Of course nothing will happen because it's so rare anyway. The cantaloupe is gone. I just bought pineapple, but I'm only going to eat it with cottage cheese.

Sorry for the rambling. But if anyone is reading and has this, or knows something about it, I'd sure be interested. Maybe I will post a question in the General Discussion section.

Upping calories to 1500 starting today for a week. For lunch we had boxed chicken lunches prepared for a charity fund-raising event. I mowed the front lawn---actually only mowed the weeds growing on top of dormant summer grass.

Lightened my hair a shade last night with that Sun-In stuff, just for fun. I poured some on and worked it it, rather than spray. It made a slight reddish highlight as well, versus my drab dingy plain old brown. I like it.

This reminds me of my grandmother, who, when she was in her late 80's, started putting that cheap red dye on her gray hair, the kind you used to get in capsules. It looked awful, but she thought it looked good. Maybe I'm becoming just like her?

Oh no, not like grandma, couldn't be!!  I have similar issues with my blood sugar, though I am diabetic.  I rarely eat fruit without either protein or a good carb (oatmeal).  It causes me to get jittery and then crash... and then binge to get my sugar back up.  I do agree that protein works best, and I usually stick to berries as they have the least impact on glucose levels.  I usually eat my fruit with a chunk of cheese to slow absorption of the sugar. Melons are definitely a high sugar fruit, and so are bananas!!

The old woman with a house full of cats? Not quite yet.

The job I worked at for 27.5 years had little structure in terms of times you had to be there.  Most of the work I could do better at home or back at the office late at night.  The last 10 years it was classroom software development---hours spend over the computer---the quieter the better, snack while staring at a monitor.  I never ate at the same time 2 days in a row.

In September I adopted these two abandoned cats and made them indoor-only cats.   I wrestled a long time with the idea of having housecats, thinking "I don't need this extra grief."   But I actually enjoy the cats, and it's turned out to be a really good thing in a way I never thought.

To keep them from begging all day, I feed them only at specific times twice a day (8am, 6pm).   Now, right after I feed the cats is the only safe time for me to eat, because they don't stare at me and beg.   This means I can peacefully eat breakfast at 8:15 and dinner at 6:15.    All of a sudden I have forced structure in my life!!!

So I think I can add breakfast and a healthy dinner and make this a habit for life (life of the cats, anyway).

But the problem with eating good food?  It's a heck of a lot more work.  Eating PB&J, cookies, M&M's, dirties maybe one knife and a paper plate.  Freeze the bread and there is even little to no grocery shopping.  You can stock up for months on one trip.

Eating healthy requires time, and pots and pans and plates, and dishwashing, let alone going grocery shopping regularly (which I hate).  I still don't have an automatic dishwasher because I never needed one.

I guess we'll see how much of this healthy eating while dieting carries over, but even one good meal a day and breakfast should help some.  I don't think I could have ever made the time when I was working.  I don't know how you guys do it.

And of course after saying all this, I skipped breakfast today, because of an early lunch with a friend.

Whew! Long winded again today....

Nancy, dieting really is a tremendous amount of work!  I have to buy different food, cut it, cook it, etc... and it costs more too!  I would just eat tons of chunky PB on old fashioned white bread with strawberry preserves, honey bbq fritos, and tons of diet cola, and I could be set for life!  Easy too!  But... then I will be fat and unhealthy, so I guess it's back to shopping, chopping, cooking and cleaning...

Your kitties sound lovely.  I have had a cat my entire life and would be lonely without one!  or two... or three... They are nice company and relatively easy maintenance~

Sorry to hear about your drier than cactus pork.  Don't make yourself eat yucky stuff for the sake of cutting calories, there's no joy in that!  I do my pork in the crock pot, in bouillion and water, and it stays pretty moist.  Love your graphic, great to see that someone can actually steadily lose weight without any jumps back UP!

You've slowed down from approx 2lb/week in January to just a little over 1lb/week in March but that's still impressive given you've now matched my weight (at the same height as me, 5'5") given that I consider myself succesful when I get half a pound a week. Just don't get discouraged if/when it slows down further

Nir, believe it or not, I'm not really trying to lose any more weight.   At 127 (around March 5th) I started slowly easing up toward maintenance level, because 128 seems to be a good number for me going from past experience.    I thought the difference would be made up in water weight and food volume when I reach maintenance.  But I've actually lost about 3 more pounds.  Maybe still too early to tell.

The ease up is probably too slow (100 calories extra for a week).   But it keeps me in the habit of watching what I eat longer, and gives me more time to think about what good food I can add.

I think the most important goal for me now should be to try to tone up muscle and cardio work.

Stayed up until 3 am last night thinking about how to do these taxes. Then remembered the peanuts. Was able to stop at 20 this time. Don't ever buy peanuts again!

The more different foods I add, the more I want salt on them, including the old diet foods.   Never cared about salt when the calorie budget was tight.   It's evidently causing some weight fluctuations day to day even while keeping calories approx the same.

In case you haven't tried it, the lemon is not very good.  Has a bitter taste, like they ground up half the rind with it.  Thanks for the info.  I'll keep looking.

Experimented with making a two-serving size low-cal peach shortcake tonight. Not bad, a little rubbery as expected, and a little bitter because I added too much extra baking soda and baking powder (fearing it would fall flat if I didn't). Might experiment using oatmeal tomorrow night.

The experiment with the old fashioned oatmeal didn't work out so well.  Maybe it needs to be instant oatmeal, or at least ground up (and I forgot the salt).  Waited too late to get in the 1600 calories.   But I'm sticking with it as closely as I can, regardless.  Will fill in with peanuts.  All the salt today should show up tomorrow.

The instant oatmeal sounds like a good idea, or the quick oats maybe.  I usually stick to my SF pudding when I am making healthy choices.  I used to layer it with some kashi granola and berries, in a pretty parfait glass, and top it with a little cool whip.  I really need to refocus on those healthier ways to eat!! Nuts ought to work well to add in calories, they add up quickly~

According to the calculators here, the difference in my adjusted RMR (moderately active) at 145 and 125 is about 120 calories.  So I suppose I should adjust my maintenance calories down to more like 1800, but I'll wait and see what happens.  I can always do that later and recalculate.

Nancy, did you crumble the graham cracker in the pudding?  Hmmm, I am beginning to get some yummy ideas!  I also remembered that cool whip makes these flavored kinds like chocolate and french vanilla that would be yummy layered with the SF pudding!

Yes, crumbled in the bottom and on top, with banana slices in the middle.    I didn't think a banana would go with butterscotch, but it was good.  Didn't think of the Coolwhip.  Second half will have Coolwhip on it, too.:yum:

Nancy, I didn't mean to put ideas in your head haha... but that does sound like a yummy snack!  Better than a big old bowl of ice cream or a handful of cookies... which is what I gravitate toward!  I have some SF pudding in the cupboard though and I plan to make it for a treat this weekend.

And my mother's too, but hers is easy.   I don't understand why I drag this out every year.

Exercise has definitely taken a hit during this time.

I have to chime in on the SF pudding topic....

One of my past diet favs was taking SF cheesecake flavored jello brand pudding, made with FF skim milk.  I would put them it in the individual sized graham pie shells (6 per pack); and top with No Sugar Added Strawberry Perserves.  OMG...heaven!!!!

The other variation was taking those same shells, SF banana pudding w/skim milk, 3 slices fresh banana on bottom of shell, add pudding, dollop of FF cool whip, then another slice of banana w/a little nutmeg for presentation.  :)  Delish!!!

I like pudding thick, so I always make it with about 2/3 the liquid called for.  Then I use (powdered) skimmed milk.  And I even substitute half water for half the milk sometimes.  It seems fine to me.   But I can eat just about anything.

I'm going to try it with all water one of these days and see what happens.

Hmmm... those graham shells sure do sound good.. gonna have to check calories on those!! Your body really seems to like 123 lbs, even with upping the cals.  It's nice to maintain and be able to add more food! Congrats on getting taxes done.  I got mine done but still have to do my mom's... should be doing it right now instead of playing on the computer hahaha!

Don't think I'm going to be able to continue the squats. I was sort of "nudged" by a car several years ago, which injured my knee, and I think the squats are causing it to act up (for the first time).

Eating more and STILL losing weight... good example to all those people who starve themselves thinking that's what has to be done to lose weight.  If your knee bugs you, I would suggest getting a pilates or yoga DVD to help with toning.  I have Leslie Sansons's Pilates DVD and it is easy to perform at different levels and has very little joint impact.  Might be a nice way to continue to tone without harming your body!

Well, MJ, 122.5 is not really a loss.  Been hovering around 123+/- for a long time.   I have to say (for me) eating lower calories than most recommend is better.   At 1600 calories a day it would have taken me 8.5 months to lose 22 pounds!!!  I would have gotten totally frustrated and given up long before now.

Moved more calories to mid morning and less to afternoon.  Not out of some intelligent plan, but because the last half of the (cheesecake flavored) pudding kept nagging at me all morning.

This doesn't bode well for the future.  I need to always make only 2 servings of any dessert.  If something is nagging at me, it's best just to eat it and get it over with.  Substitutes don't work, I eventually eat what's nagging at me anyway, and then I've just added more calories on top of that.

Trying some soup again.  Eating lots of soup with salt made for yo-yo weigh-ins back in January.

Increasing calories gradually and still choosing healthy stuff is harder to do than I thought it would be.  I've about reached my limit on vegetables.  It's amazing the volume of vegetables you can eat and still not gain weight.  I keep thinking I'm going to end up with a "vegetable belly," instead of a beer belly.

Still not exercising enough though.  The To-Do list out at my mother's farm is getting longer and longer, waiting for better weather.  That will help, but will ignore certain muscles.

Would you believe it's supposed to get down to 28o tomorrow night and possible snow flurries?!!!

Nancy, I feel the same way about cravings... it is better to indulge and have what is nagging at me right away, because I will inevitably end up having it anyway, no need to add extra calories into the mix!

Your weather sounds horrible.  Ours is too- cold, wet or icy, not at all spring-like.  Makes me wish I planned a spring break somewhere warm instead of Cleveland to see some sports teams...

Hey Nancy, I had a little snow in the bed of my work truck over here in Athens Alabama this morning. Where is all the global warming. Obama has been in office a couple of months and he has already fixed it...LOL  Now if he will send me a check and stimulate my economy like he did all the big wigs....:shock:

They've revised the low to 33oF tonight.  I hope they're correct.  We got little bitty peaches setting on our little tree right now.  Installed two new shop lights in my mom's garage today.  Carried hay to the goats.

Good Morning Nancy

Good to meet another who lives on a farm?  Or is it your mom?  Or both of you.

I am impressed with your daily meal postings.  Think I could learn from them.  I seem to be stuck right now.

You know all the years we farmed we never had goats only once when our daughter age 5 bid on 2 of them at an auction and of course he said SOLD to the little girl.

Did you ever try to plant a garden with 4 kids (children) 2 goats and a dog.  I had the  most crooked rows in the country.  But I said veggies taste the same crooked row or straight..lol..

Ahh the memories you stirred up. Thank you.

Cheerio

Hi Nancy

I forgot to send a post to YOU!!!

Yes, I'd love to do an exercise challenge with you. I'm not sure how we go about it, let me know.

Weather in Edinburgh, Scotland this afternoon was BALTIC, GALE FORCE WINDS, I was at the beach too with families with children most of them under 5. Do you know they had a great time collecting shell and throwing stones in the water and jumping over the waves.....it took me AGES to heat up when I got back. It didn't feel so windy and cold inland!!! Lesson learned today, don't got to beach with children and families in Scotland until summer!!!

I've had a look at the challenges and there are some I'd like to join but as for increasing exercise I've not seen any suitable for someone as sluggish as me!!!

I think it would be good to both do the same exercise what do you like doing? How do you feel about walking and or cycling? It won't cost anything and we can post our distances.

Monday is a good day for me to start too.

My sister-in-law is in her 50's and had a go on roller skates!!! talk about second childhood.

One of my ambitions from years ago was to walk the West Highland way in Scotland and I wonder if this might be the beginning of that dream/aim/goal......

I can see now, it is a lot of work counting 1900 calories, if you don't include a lot of big ticket non-healthy items, like pizza or ice cream.  But I did it anyway.

I ate all day.  There were no defined meals except dinner.  This is not good.  Can't do this again.  Won't bother posting so many details from now on.

Hehe, I see you made yourself have breakfast one day.   If you are maintaining a healthy weight, etc then do without breakfast if it makes you happy!  No need to conform becase SOMEONE says people need to eat breakfast!  It's interesting how much you can up the calories and still maintain or even lose a little bit! No point in eating 1200 cals when you can eat 1800 or more!

Thanks for the advice MJ.   I think I'll take it!   It's like waiting around until someone tells you something you want to hear.  Ha!

Been doing a lot more exercise lately.  We'd like to have more members in the 6 Weeks Exercise Challenge.   If anyone is interested, please join us.   You can't be as bad as me.

Trying to stick at 1900 calories was getting too tedious.   Plus one habit I developed while losing was to save up calories until evening fearing I'd want to snack too much at night.   I am still doing this unconsciously, and then have too many calories left for evening.  I've ended up eating a whole lot just before bed just to get to 1900.   This is silly!

So I'm going to go with whatever the count comes out to be now, provided it doesn't go above 2000.   The first try at this was low because I went shopping and killed the whole evening.

The mall was almost empty.   The small stores had no customers at all.   Doesn't look good for the economy.

Date     Weight Calories

April 16  123.0  1900
April 17  123.0  1900
April 18  123.0  1690
April 19  123.5

Maybe you can just start eating to respond more to hunger than to a set number...hahaha as long as it doesn't hit your 2000 cal limit.  I have a hard time reading my own hunger cues and when I try to pay attention to that, I definitely eat differently.  I'm going to check out your exercise challenge, thanks for the tip.

Hey Nancy

I know you've set up the fitness challenge and keep up to date there but I miss reading your updates and sense of humour. It's more than what you're eating, it's who you are.

Once I'm at my weight I'll be looking back at your diary entries to be reminded how you've managed to maintain. I think that's harder than losing weight.

Lami, so far maintenance has been kind of a fun experiment, actually.  I lost the weight as quickly as I could (~2lbs/week) so I didn't get frustrated with "dieting" for what would have seemed like forever.  I owe a lot to CPH for helping me stick with it at the hard stage.

Then I've spent almost as much time easing up from ~1100 cals/day to maintenance level, about 100 calories more every week.  This has given me time to develop good habits at higher calorie levels.

When you cut calories to the minimum, you don't have much choice but to eat healthy. It's when you pack in 2000 that you (I) start to get sloppy.  This is just my experience, of course.  I know everyone says to lose slooooooowly, but that just wouldn't have worked for me.   I'd have given up long ago.

Nancy, you should be quite proud of your accomplishment! You had to do without a lot of tasty treats in order to power off those lbs, not like they just fell off!

Hi, Nancy!

Firstly...I'd like to say that I've been up for a very long time, in order to get back on schedule. However, looking at your avatar is making me even more sleepy. What a great pillow it would make...it's so peaceful...

SNAP, OK where was I?

I agree - you are doing a wonderful job on maintenance. You've given me hope that when I reach my goal weight, I can stick to about 1800 calories to maintain, with mild exercise. With the way I eat, I think that 1800 is very manageable for me long-term. I'm sure I'll be referencing this diary, too, when that time comes.

Great job on your exercise challenge, too! You all are really kicking butt and taking names. Exercise is a real achilles heel for many members here, but you've managed to assemble an impressive group and keep them motivated. Great job!

Keep it up!

Oops, it's been a week already and I said I was going to update weekly.

Nick, the goat in my avatar is Curly, one of my mother's wethers (male with some parts missing).   He was about a year old in that picture.   He is 5yrs old now and a bit huskier, about 180 lbs, not overweight for a dairy goat.

I wish some more folks would join our exercise challenge.   I keep reading entries in diaries about wanting to exercise more.   Maybe it's those Guidelines, but they really aren't that difficult to meet if you only do 30 mins of cardio at a time.

I missed the weight loss challenge when I first joined CPH because I was too new to even know there was a Section on Challenges.   Since it seems to be OK to join with small goals, I'm thinking of joining the Independence Day challenge to lose a couple more pounds.   I don't have a digital scale, so if do, I think I'll post the weekly average rather than a daily weight, if they'll let me do it that way.

Anyway, here's the summary for the last week.

Date/Weight/Calories

04/27 122.5 1870
04/28 123.0 1920
04/29 123.0 1850
04/30 122.5 1840
05/01 122.5 1850
05/02 122.5 1880
05/03 122.5 1970

Average: 122.6lbs, 1883 calories/day

Nancy, once your challenge is over, you should start a new one! I'll join the next one - you hold me to that, OK? I know that I could join it now and do no strength, but strength is important, and if I'm going to join an exercise challenge, I want to do it right. By then, my body should be leveled out a bit more.

Although, I've noticed that Betsy does a month's worth of my cardio every week.

People do join our weight loss challenges in order to maintain. Even though they are called "weight loss" challenges, general health and accountability are the factors that are most encouraged. Also, there are some members that post weights more often than weekly, but weekly is the norm.

Keep it up!

I love the exercise challenge!  Even though doing the strength part is a challenge, it still keeps it in my mind and helps me set some goals for myself.  I think I am being more consistent and thoughtful about the exercise.  Hopefully others will join us in the next round!

Hey Nancy, How are you doing. I have been so busy at work and trying to cut grass with all this rain. I cut 8 acres and it is even flooded on the hills. I got my big lawn mower stuck and had to bring a track machine hope to pull it out. No time to fish, I hate that because the catfish are hitting good now.

Anyway, my appitite has gone crazy and I am trying to crack the wipe on it. Good to see you are sticking with the diet.

Hey Doug, we've been having above normal rain also, but I'll take it.   After 3 years of drought they threatened rationing water last summer in some towns here.

Last week I cranked up our little tractor and used the box blade!   Those box blades are handy.   It's not a John Deere.  It's called a Boomer, diesel, made by New Holland/Ford, rated at 30hp I think.  We also have a mower, scoop and posthole digger.  I'm getting better at switching attachments.   But I think I would prefer a separate tractor for each attachment.

The weight is staying off, but I'm still counting calories.   Don't know if I trust myself to just wing it.   Had 3 meatball subs since I last talked to you (not all on the same day), but still kept under 2000.

Reporting in.   Joined the Independence Day Challenge, mostly to make sure I maintain,  but also because it looks like so much fun.   Put down a 2lb goal loss.  I'd hate to make the team pounds lost go up just because of me, so I'm going to try for it.   Maybe that fat on my waist and knees will go away with 2 more lbs.

Date/Weight/Calories

05/04 122.0 1770

Doug, I've been posting daily on the Exercise Challenge.   Hope you're having great fun at your cookouts.

It's hard to get back to posting in a diary once you quit doing it daily. I guess first I should at least be accountable for calories and weight since last time. This starts with when I joined the ID Challenge on May 7th. Start weight 122.5.  Goal is only 2 pounds.  It's fun.

Week 1
Date/weight/calories
05/08 122.5 1750
05/09 122.5 1730
05/10 122.0 1700
05/11 122.5 1670
05/12 122.0 1780
05/13 121.5 1750
05/14 122.0 1700

Averages: 122.1 1726 cals/day

Week 2
Date/weight/calories
05/15 122.0 1600
05/16 121.5 1580
05/17 121.0 1680
05/18 121.0 1700
05/19 121.5 1640
05/20 122.0 1980
05/21 122.0 1700

Averages: 121.6 1697 cals/day

Nothing eventful happened since last time except I've been exercising following the Heart Association guidelines on the challenge. It's been really good. I can definitely tell a difference.

Oh, and a fight with HSBC Mastercard about two unauthorized charges from TLG (Trilegiant).  It seems like the credit card company is award of this but doesn't care.  TLG has been sued and lost in Conn. and Calif. already for illegal charges, and there are hundred of complaints on the internet still.  Check your credit card bills for TLG charges!    About to go back to hauling cash around.

Today was the first day that I wanted to eat junk.  A whole 2 cup package of sf pudding with bananas.   Not too awful, I guess.  But up to 1100 calories already at 3:30pm.   Cleaning out my bathroom top to bottom today.   Hopefully that will keep me busy.

Oh yes, and I wore shorts out in public for the first time today in probably 20 years! Still got fat knees, though.

I'm spending the weekend cleaning house---long, long overdue.   Hope everyone else is having a good weekend.

Happy Memorial Day!

I've been humming this song for 3 days and it was driving me crazy because I didn't know where I heard it or the name of it.   So I found this website (musipedia.org) where you enter what they call a contour search.   All you have to know is whether the next note goes up, down, or stays the same.   It's called Parsons code.    And the site gives you a list of possible songs.

Turns out it's "To a Wild Rose" by Edward MacDowell (a REAL, REAL oldie. The composer died in 1908).   It was the first match.    That is so neat!    But where the heck did I come up with that one?   Piano lessons when I was a kid, maybe?

Anyway, back to business.   I'm still keeping calorie totals and weighing every day:

I should add about 500 calories somewhere 2-3 weeks ago because I took half a bottle of DayQuil for a cold, and didn't even think about checking how many it had.  Wasn't worth it.

Not much new here.   Joined a gym Wednesday for 3 months to see how it goes.  Got to try most of the equipment the first day.   Sure beats doing strength exercises at home.   Now I have to buy some clothes to wear there.   My black running shoes won't cut it either.

A sidebar: Our city announced Monday that they had finally picked up all the debris from the March 1st snowstorm (only 6" of snow).

Summary of last week:

Date/Weight/Calories
06/26 119.0 1930
06/27 118.5 1860
06/28 119.0 1900
06/29 118.0 1900
06/30 118.0 1890
07/01 119.0 1720
07/02 118.0 2000

Averages:
118.5
and 1886 cals/day

Time to look back on the last 6 mos, settle on the level of calories for maintenance, and come up with a simplified plan for the long term. For the last 12 weeks I've been doing exercise regularly, but just the minimum recommended levels (5 days cardio & 2-3 days strength per week). I broke down the time period into 3 segments to see if there were any noticeable differences:

(1) Weight loss period, very low calories (60 days, Jan5-Mar5)
(2) Near goal weight, easing calories up to maintenance (40 days, Mar6-Apr14)
(3) Maintenance plus regular exercise (78 days, Apr15-Jul2)

I lost weight after period (1) but it was partly because I figured maintenance too low, and partly because of the Ind Day Challenge. I felt guilty not trying to lose something.

At the beginning the weight was higher so more calories were required, but the difference in RMR calories from max to min weights for me is only 123. I did do some sporadic high intensity exercise in periods 1 and 2. Lowering the start weight by a pound (due to water?) changes things a bit. Not sure how to interpret the results or if there is even enough data to bother looking at it.

Anyway I guess I'm now settling on about 2000 calories for maintenance with exercise.

The fact that that puts me in the "extremely active" category:shock: convinces me that I'm counting calories a little too high. I do always round up to the nearest 10. Went back and adjusted the first couple of weeks from the diary because I was counting one item clearly too high, and added 500 for the DayQuil. But as long as I continue to count too high in the same way, it shouldn't matter.

Well I don't like the results after going to 2000 calories/day for a week.   The 117.5 was my lowest weight since being an adult (actually since 8th grade).   Now it's crept steadily up to 120.   I don't mind being 120, but the trend is spooky.   If I go above 120 tomorrow morning, I'm adjusting down to 1900 calories per day.    I counted pretty closely this week, tried to get very close to the 2000 by adding peanuts.   Maybe I'm counting more correctly now.    Maybe I need to give it more time.   Geesh, why is this so hard to figure out?

Date/Weight/Calories
07/03 117.5 2000
07/04 118.5 2000
07/05 119.0 2000
07/06 119.0 2000
07/07 119.0 2000
07/08 120.0 2000
07/09 120.0 2000

Averages: 119.0  and  2000 cals/day

ETA:  Either I'm crazy or there is something wrong with the labeling on the physicsdiet charts.  The charts in my previous post are screenshots of the graphs I saved on Photobucket on July 3rd, not dynamic charts from physicsdiet website, yet the label says the data goes to July 9th.

Weight is 119.5 this morning, so maybe it's stopped going up.   I have been working out with weights almost every day for the last two weeks.   Maybe I'm building some muscle.  I can feel the difference.    Still thinking of cutting back to 1950.

Don't really know why finding this number is so important to me, because I don't want to spend the rest of my life counting calories that precisely.  It's just something I'm hung up on now.  Anyway it's kept me on track another week, so for whatever reason, that's good.

Back down to 118.5 today in spite of sticking with the 2000 calories for 2 more days.   So I guess the answer was...I didn't wait long enough.   But that doesn't explain the spike.

I think it was two things---eating a lot of salt and not exercising at as high an intensity cardio for the last week.  Been concentrating more on strength.   Last night I jogged one mile and then 3/4mi on an elliptical that forced you to actually pull with your arms a lot.   HR was consistently above 150 on the elliptical after the run.   Lots of sweating, but drank lots of liquids, too.

Weight seems like it has stabilized at 2000 cal/day if I do minimum recommended exercise.   But it just "feels like" a little too much.    Maybe because I'm eating more just before I go to bed lately.   So I'm going to continue trying to hold at exactly 2000 for at least another week or two.

When I gradually eased up after losing enough weight, each time I increased the calories by 100 a day I felt stuffed.   Now after several weeks near 2000, I've gotten "used to it" and want more (sigh).   Was hoping that wouldn't happen.

When I eat something without protein, or simple carbs, just before bed I wake up hungry in the morning.   Last night it was banana and pineapple.   Obviously better to not eat anything before bed, but if I do it should include some protein or complex carbs---just like breakfast.

Date/Weight/Calories

Been eating lunch out a lot lately with friends.    It's hard to be very precise with calories when you eat meatball subs, bacon and cheese burrito, etc.   All bad.   But I'm still eating a lot of vegetables otherwise.   The trend has been ever so slowly upward, so I'm going to go back down a little in calories.    This morning's weight was down to 118.5 already.   Coincidence I guess.   Once again, this tinkering around with calories has kept me from overeating for another week, so whatever it takes...

For some reason I feel like writing in this diary tonight, so here goes.

Tonight I went for a fast walk around town at 8:15 pm, trying to get in some cardio.  It was getting near dark.  There was a tall young man in front of me on the sidewalk, dressed casually, walking extremely slowly and he kept looking back, so I crossed the road.  Then I came up behind another man doing the same thing.   I sensed now that they must be together, but it was in a safe place, so I decided to pass.   Then he turns and offers me some religious literature (somewhat of a relief).   I guess this is a new strategy.   Cover both sides of the road and it's harder to say "no, thank you" when you're both walking in the same direction.   Then I met another one coming home and was able to say "Got one already, thank you."

For some reason this is annoying to me.  I guess it's my problem.

Unfortunately I took $2 with me so couldn't resist stopping to get some food---potato chips and diet coke was all I could get for $2.   How stupid.   At 30 minutes stopped at a park and ate the junk and watched a hummingbird visit the impatiens, then went on for 20 more minutes.

There is a bar/outdoor restaurant along this route.   Some day when I see anyone there over 40 I think I will try to muster enough courage to stop and get a drink.  I just feel mischievous for some reason.    Haven't been to a bar for a long time.

Got in touch with my old girlfriend from 3rd grade through high school, who I haven't seen in over 20 years.  We have been exchanging e-mail for a couple of days.   Her sense of humor comes through on her e-mail, just the same as it was when we were kids.   Our HS class is having a reunion in October, but I don't think I'll make it.  It is over 500 miles away.  There were over 300 in our graduating class and I never knew most of them.   Only about 20 have signed up so far.   Pretty sad.

After dropping calories to 1900 the weight dipped back down to 117.5 on Sunday!  Go figure.  Too soon to be related.  The key is no doubt salt and water, and if I really wanted to get to the bottom of this I'd record them, but I'm too lazy.  Also exercise (sweating) and I don't know how to record that.

Found the nutritional info for my favorite sub shop on the web!  I had been guessing the calories in their meatball subs, and it turns out I was only off by 3 calories (0.4% over)!  I really didn't want to give those up completely, they're my only indulgence, and now I don't have to.   Hopefully I'll tire of them soon.  Still eating fruit and vegetables, though.

Before I joined CPH in January (at 145lbs) I had to be eating WAY more than 2000 calories/day, for sure never less, cause I still feel like I'm on a "diet" at 1900.  That means I'd best never stop keeping track of calories, or I'll be right back up there.  I'd like to learn how to do a rough estimate in my head without writing everything down.  Maybe break down the day into parts (meals, snacks) and set limits for each part.

OTOH, I guess I could just forget it, assess the damage after a few weeks, then try to join a challenge to drop off what I've gained.  So far, there's something about this "public disclosure" of eating habits that really seems to help.  Thanks :cph:!

This 1900 calorie limit is more challenging than 2000.  How can 100 calories make that much difference?   It must be psychological.   Of course I realize I don't hit exactly 1900 because I don't weigh things, just measure volume or go by packages, but I try.

Yesterday had an attack on vanilla wafers early in the day, running calories up to 1600 before dinner time (sigh).   So I find a head of cabbage in the refigerator, and boiled the entire head for later use.   Four cups of cabbage sure takes away any empty feelings.     Didn't realize cabbage had so much calcium---and sodium.   So sodium doesn't have to taste salty?   'Cause I still salted the cabbage lightly.

Still had calories to spare by bedtime and even had to supplement with peanuts (and more vanilla wafers:shock:).  I cannot buy vanilla wafers any more!

Weight unbelievably consistent this week:

Date/Weight/Calories
07/31 118.0 1900
08/01 118.0 1900
08/02 118.0 1900

08/04 118.0 1900
08/05 118.0 1900
08/06 118.0 1900

Averages: 118.0 and 1900 cals/day (that was easy to calculate)

Hi Nancy!  I just read the last page of your diary and I had to say how impressed I am with your meticulous records and great graphs!   One hundred eighteen pounds sounds like a dream weight to me, so it's really inspiring to see it can happen if we just keep on counting those calories.

Thanks for stopping by, Sylphide.   You can do it!

I'm going to cut out some of these boring numbers and just report high, low and averages, I think.

Always late to find out about things, I just discovered Saturday that Google maps "street view" is a free service.   This is just about the greatest toy ever invented! Talk about an excuse for time-wasting...

I was up until almost 3:00am Saturday night, looking up every house and apartment I've ever lived in, and the house of most anyone I've ever known the address or remember the location of.   Can't believe they even have a street view of my father's mother's old house on a little rural road outside a town of population about 50 in West Virginia!

Nancy, I read this last night about nine o'clock and my husband and I ended up spending hours doing the same thing.  I just wish I had more addresses.  I looked up our old house in Warner Robins and saw how the Pampas Grass had overgrown (we hated that stuff) then went looking for the house I grew up in in WV.  What fun!

It's been a couple of weeks since updating.   Five days without a computer was an eye-opener.   It's amazing how much time I waste on this thing.   The first day without it I was actually getting stuff done.

Got a lot of things happening the next few weeks.  Our EZGO finally quit for good.   A guy is picking it up on Wednesday for servicing.   Another man is coming to install a new debris trap on the overflow pipe on our dam.   The same man will deliver and stack 100 bales of hay for the winter, grade out a road through the woods, and install two large culverts.  I need to be there to "supervise."

Need to paint my mother's garage.  This will be my first attempt at spray painting.   I'll start on the back side where it won't show.   I really enjoy trying things for the first time just to see if I can do them.   Not much interested in doing them a second time, though, especially if it involves work.

I've also decided to build the base cabinets for my kitchen from scratch, using the face board, doors, and drawers from the old ones.   Mainly because ready made cabinets are so cheaply built, my house is so old nothing is square, and it would require two visits from a plumber.   I've set a deadline for Thanksgiving (being realistic).   My mom and I built our goat barn from scratch, so I've got all the tools.

I conducted an experiment on Wednesday.   Foreseeing early in the day that I would probably go over the 1900 calorie limit (my mother made sauerkraut balls and banana nut bread again), I decided to just eat whatever I wanted and sure enough I went for the junk food (crackers, bread, muffins).   Well the sugar spikes came back worse than ever, and I ended up with almost 2800 calories for the day:shock:, and could have gone on, but called a halt.   The total amount of food seemed like nothing.   Not sure if I'm kidding myself that this was an "experiment," or maybe it was just a "binge" in disguise.   Bring back those vegetables!

The most revolting development was that I finally broke down and bought a set of digital scales, and the darned things weigh 3.4 pounds heavier than the old ones.    But they weigh the same up to 25 lbs.  I have over 6 months of data using the old scales on physicsdata.com which I have no intention of converting.   I'm guessing the new scales are closer to the true weight.  That puts me at approximately 121.5 instead of 118.   So I'm closer to the average (130) of the normal weight range for my height (111-149) than to the lower limit.   Tempted to join the next challenge and try for a real 118 on the new scales.  I'll probably never get this close again so now's the time to do it if I'm ever going to.

Well here are the stats for the last 14 days (8/07-8/20):

                High  /  Low   / Average
Weight:    119.5   117.5   118.3
Calories:  2780    1700    1961

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

I see one reason why some think that eating late at night keeps you from losing weight. The weight is going to be higher first thing in the morning.  Makes sense because there are simply fewer hours to burn the calories.  Got to give it time if that is the routine.  If it's haphazard then just have faith in the calorie counts.

I've been eating some late dinners lately because the gym is crowded until about 8pm. So dinner has been as late as 10pm, when I get back.  The weight is slightly higher in the morning on those days, and of course I've got to have the morning cups of (black) coffee, so it does no good to wait.  But the problem is I still wake up hungry if I eat late at night.  Not so otherwise.

Well the calories have been slightly higher lately.  Got to watch it.  And I've got to start keeping a notebook in the kitchen because I keep eating things and forgetting to write them down.  These new scales are causing extra work.  I'm going to shift to them to report in the diary, but keep the old scale on physicsdiet.com.  Too many entries to change now.

Stats:

For the 13 days from 8/21 through 9/02:

               High |  Low  | Average
Calories:      3000 | 1710  | 1938
Weight(old):  120.0 | 117.1 | 118.7
Weight(new):  123.4 | 120.5 | 122.1

For the week from 9/3 through 9/9 (synchronizing with new challenge)

              High | Low   | Average
Calories:     2090 | 1670  | 1927
Weight(old): 118.6 | 117.0 | 117.8
Weight(new): 122.0 | 120.4 | 121.2

Finding it harder to keep under 2000 calories because I've been working in the kitchen a lot.  This week my problem is plain old graham crackers.  They're not even that good, but I can't lay off of them.:chewing:

Stats for week of 9/10 through 9/16:

           High  | Low   | Average
Calories:  2180  | 1810  | 1950
Weight:    123.4 | 120.4 | 121.5

Hey Nancy, looks like you did a good job staying under your 2000 calories for the week. Working in the kitchen makes it incrediably hard so a few graham crackers is a good choice I think. Are you doing a lot of canning or something else that keeps you in the kitchen?

I know you are trying to more or less maintain, I swear that is so much harder than losing I feel your pain. :dizzy:

I like the way you average for the week as well as track your high low. If I get a little more ambitiuos I may steal your idea.

Hiker, I'm building new base cabinets for my kitchen using the doors and drawers from the old ones.   The important words about the graham crackers is "a few."   I can't do just a few.   Maybe we should crank up your maintenance challenge again.  I really liked that idea.

Well, the only way I can hit close to 1900 calories every day seems to be to plan the day out in the morning and stick to it.   Not sure if I want to put that much effort into eating for the rest of my life.   But on average I'm doing OK, I guess, a little high.   The key seems to be portion control and vegetables and not have anything in the house that is easy to fix.   If it tastes good don't eat much of it, unless it's vegetables (except potatoes:sad:).

Week's stats:

          High  | Low   | Average
Calories: 2320  | 1640  | 2013
Weight:   121.2 | 120.0 | 120.5

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for stopping by my journal. I just checked out your first and last page entries. Wow, you really did an amazing job, going from 145 to 118. Or should I say from 148 to 121 :)) Nothing like an off-kilter scale; although either way, you've done fantastic.

I've personally never counted calories, mostly based on laziness. Plus I have a theory that if you use common sense, your weight will reflect that. However, common sense may be easier to enforce when your looking at those hard numbers...

Ahh, common sense.  I don't have it when it comes to food.  For instance today....

It's been raining again and I hit the refrigerator early.:chewing:   Reached 1850 calories by 3pm.   Nothing since then, but I've got a batch of blueberry muffins in the oven---850 calories and I know I'll eat all of them.

Now why did I go and do that?   I could go the rest of the night without eating.  I've done it before.  Too late now unless I decide toss them.   It will take 3 days of undereating to make up for that.   Stupid.:dizzy:

Nancy: Wow!  It is comforting for me to know that even the Great Dieting Queen screws up every now and then.  Girl, I have had mornings where I hit 1850 before it's even noon (which is even more embarrassng than being drunk before noon, in my book).  If you want my advce though, to feel better about the whole thing

GET RID OF THE MUFFINS

you don't have to necessarily throw them out, you could give them to a neighbor or drie them down to a homeless shelter or something.  And if you do that, you will feel even better about yourself.

Low temperatures have dipped into the 50's here.   My weight always drops a little when the weather turns cold suddenly.   Unfortunately it comes right back if it turns hot again.  Must have something to do with water retention and heat.   Does anyone else experience this?

Week's stats: (9/24 through 9/30):

           High  | Low   | Average
Calories:  2700  | 1750  | 2014

Just did some Googling and read on several websites that during periods of high temperatures the body is less efficient at removing fluid from its tissues.   So if true that explains my drop in weight when it cools off.  Interesting.

It also just dawned on me that I've never seen an odd fraction of a pound show up on my new scales---only even numbers.   It does report in 0.1 kilogram increments.  It seems that it would have to be specifically programmed NOT to report in 0.1 lb increments, unless it measures in kilos and then converts.   Do you suppose someone read that the scale was not accurate to less than 0.2 lbs and programmed it that way?    Ha!   I'd like to think not.

I guess if this worries me then I have too much time on my hands.

Nancy, there may be something too that theory. I know when it's warm my hands are definatly bigger. I've always attributed it to my body retianing more water when it's warm but I really have no idea. It is interesting though.

Oh boy, I visited my mother Sunday and she had fixed homemade pot pie (pork) and sausage biscuits for snacks.  Needless to say the eating was not good. :chewing:

I don't have a clue how to count the pot pie.  I'm guessing 1000 calories, but could be more.  Got to watch it, the last few days I've been well over 2000 calories total.  I think it's time to go back into diet mode for a day or two before things start getting out of control.

Attempting to break the overeating cycle today, I kept calories to 1050 by dinner time. Then went for a walk and to the gym instead of eating dinner.  Had a huge plate of boiled cabbage fried in 1.5 tbsp of butter at 9pm.   Mmmm.

I hope that's it for the day.   Nothing good left in the house to eat right now anyway.

Total so far: 1340

Second day of self-imposed punishment for overeating on the weekend.   Logged 1000 calories by 5pm.   Went for a walk at normal dinner time.   Had a pile (1.5c) of candied carrots (butter and sugar), sf choc pudding and ff Coolwhip at 9:30pm.

Total:  1550 calories

More than I had planned, but at least under 1900.    Back to normal (whatever that is) tomorrow.:chewing:

Back to meatball subs.

Maybe I've stumbled onto a possible maintenance strategy here.   After two days back in diet mode, I didn't automatically jump right back up to high (like 2500+) calories.   The next day was 1900, most of it in the late evening, and I could have easily skipped a couple hundred of those.   And today is going reasonably well, so far.

So I could try weighing in every Monday, assessing the damage, and doing either one or two diet mode days, then :chewing: ---sort of like you guys and your UDD days, only at a maintenance level.   Mine would be more like

UUUUUDD

I'm just afraid to not count calories on the up days.   I actually go more by the calorie counts than by the scales.   Maybe I'll try it for a couple of weeks and also count calories, and see how it goes.

Before the days of automatic washers and dryers, and wash & wear clothes, my mother would usually do the washing on Monday and the ironing on Tuesday.  Surely cutting back on calories just on Monday and Tuesday would be easier than that!

(I'm trying to talk myself into this new plan)

Purposely ate pretty much whatever I wanted today and the total is only 2300 calories, but I feel stuffed.  That's odd.  I should double check and see if I missed something.   This part of the plan is the easy part.

Expecting a gain tomorrow due to eating 4 cups of homemade vegetable soup with saltines today---very heavy salt all around.  Also the weather has turned warm here again.

Assuming 2000 calories maintenance (which may, or may not, be correct), I overate by a net 820 calories since last Tuesday.   So tomorrow and Tuesday I'm shooting for an average of about 1550 cal per day ("The Laundry Diet").

Got plenty of good things to eat in the fridge---deviled eggs, cantaloupe, cabbage, peas, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, salmon, lowfat cottage cheese, bananas and pineapple.  No excuses.  Putting it in writing.  We'll see....

I knew it!  Up a pound since yesterday.   Ears ringing.   Have 6 more cups of this soup in the fridge.

And... woke up to a hard blowing rain from the east (very unusual to come from the east here) and I've got a leak in the roof/ceiling upstairs---so bad I had to put a bucket under it, just like in the movies!

It's on the side of the chimney.   Had it before and thought I had it fixed.  One step forward, two steps back.  Maybe I'll just wait until the next rain from the east comes.   Don't want to deal with this right now.

Hi Nancy,

Just checking in. What's going on? Do you live on farm? I ask because I saw you mention something about tractors. Or is it just a *big* yard?

No way, Jack, I live in the city.   My mother lives on a farm and I try to take care of things out there for her.   It's her tractor.  Too much work on a farm for me.

It rained 4.3 inches this morning before 1:00pm!   No wonder the roof leaked.  Supposed to rain more tomorrow.  Rain always makes me want to sleep all day.  No exercise.

It is 10:45 pm and I've logged in 1300 calories so far, including 2 more bowls of that salty soup.  That means the weight will stay up another day.    Will probably just stop there and leave more for tomorrow.

Hey Nancy,

I see, that explains it. I couldn't quite figure it out. Yeah, the farm sounds like a lot of work. It's really nice of you to help out your Mom.

I actually am thinking of moving to more rustic setting myself. I like driving along the long roads with not stop lights and lots of trees. I actually take the long way to work just to do that.

Weight this morning was 119.4.   Calories for Monday & Tuesday:  1350 and 1600 (so far).    Average:  1475.   Did 15 mins on an elliptical tonight and it said I can eat 1.5 extra graham crackers for all that effort :yum:.  Thanks a lot!   Back to normal tomorrow....

Still tinkering around with maintenance....

The last time I seriously dieted was in 2002---went from 150 to 125.  Gained back up to 145, but it was gradual over 6 years.  The trouble is I stopped losing weight just where I wanted to be (125), so I was higher than I wanted to be most all of those 6 years.  I don't want to do that again.  It seems like I always ate much more than I do now.  To gain at the rate of 25 lbs in 6 years would be only 40 extra calories per day on average, so there must have been some down days, too, but I don't remember any.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday I decided to eat anything I wanted and see what happened.  The total came in at approx 3000 calories each day.  It seemed like I was eating all the time.  The first day there was a lot of junk in the house and I was on a mission to get rid of it.  On Saturday I wanted to see if sweets made any difference, so I made a 4"x9" cake, smothered it in icing and ate the whole thing.  No sugar spikes at all because stomach was never empty.  For this 3 day experiment I probably gained one pound.  At 3000 cals/day I would gain 100 lbs a year, but it didn't seem like more than I used to eat.

But you know what?!!  I found out that it wasn't all that much fun.  Maybe because I didn't have Hershey's kisses or pizza or cheesecake in the house.  Eating was more like just something to do to keep from doing other things I didn't want to do---like time-wasting (are you there, Nir?).   But I also stuff food in my mouth while I'm busy working on something where I have to make a lot of decisions.  It's like a reason to take a break to avoid making decisions, or stall while I think about them.

Maybe if I just keep Hershey bars, pizza and cheesecake out of the house, keep busy, and don't worry so much about making mistakes it will be OK.

I know that this last summer has been the best summer ever.  I felt comfortable wearing shorts in public and could go walking in 95 degree heat and not be miserable.  And though I thought 125 was my ideal weight I'm liking 120 better.  Unfortunately it makes for even more wrinkles.

Glad I joined the Halloween Challenge.  Sure 'nuff my weight was up almost exactly one pound this week, so the last week of the challenge I hope to drop that extra pound.

Week's stats (not pretty:shock:): (10/15 through 10/21)

            High | Low   | Average
Calories:   3250 | 1830  | 2414
Weight:    123.0 | 120.2 | 121.4

Very much so. Tuesday was like this I couldn't stop eating. I did stick within my calorie limit (switched to salad at the right moment and strategically decided to go for a nap)

I like your weekly stats concept, let me try:

            High | Low  | Average
Weight:     51.5 | 51.0 | 51.4   (and PhysicsDiet.com puts my 'trending average' at 51.5)

So can you pin down something on Tuesday that you wanted to avoid doing?  Or was that just an unusual day?

Hey, that's a good idea about using that trending average.  If I join another challenge (to maintain) I could try reporting that every week.   What happens on one day of the week is surely not very representative.

Hey Nancy, just thought I'd stop by and see how things were going. Looks like you are really doing pretty well with maintenance, better than me that's for sure. I see you are using an averaging system. That's the way I've been doing it too, it makes more sense to me than using any one day. Are you doing some type of calorie cycling, some high followed by some low days? How is that working? I need to get back on to something a little more structured so I'm just kind of looking around and you've done so well with maintaining maybe I should try that.

Hiker, I'm still experimenting. I guess you could say calorie cycling, but I don't think it's a good idea to go high too many days in a row. It starts to become a habit.

Just out of curiosity I plotted some possible weekly weight measurements during the 7 weeks of the Halloween challenge.

It's odd how closely the low weight for the week (red) tracks with the trend weight from phsycisdiet.com (blue).

Key:
black = weight on weigh-in day (Wednesday)
pink = average weight for the week
green = highest weight for the week
red = lowest weight for the week
blue = physicsdiet.com trend weight on weigh-in day

The food and the time-wasting go hand in hand. After getting up very early and practicing Body Combat in the gym with my patient friend, I came home and felt entitled to waste time, hitting 'audio' far harder than at any point in the previous month - and munchy feelings followed

Had another bout with snacking to avoid/stall yesterday.   Was trying to install a new countertop, sink and faucet in my mom's utility room.  The only thing I'd ever done before was install a faucet.  Anyway, every time I had a different part of the job to start I'd run to the kitchen and get a bite to eat first (banana nut bread, cookie, hard candy, etc).  Clearly delaying the next task while I thought about how to do it.

Got to the faucet and found the threads on one of the supply lines had been stripped. Hopefully it's what they call PEX tubing.  If it is, then they have connectors, if it's not, I'm in big trouble.  Thank goodness it's not her kitchen sink.  Back to the big box stores today.  Had planned to go to the gym but spent it searching the internet for plumbing supplies.

It was clear that the snacking was a delay tactic.  Maybe I should stop trying to learn to do new things, but I really enjoy just seeing if I can do them.

Made up for it in the evening, though.  Only a salad and a baked potato after 3pm.  Total calories: 1950

This morning weight was back down to 119.2, the weight before last week's "experiment."

It's always so dead around here on weekends, I'm going to post some nonsense because I can't think of anything else.  BTW, why is the editor on here so temperamental about single spacing?

Solved the plumbing problem.  Just twisted that plastic fitting on and off a brass one several times, which carved out the messed up threads.  Then used silicone caulk instead of the tape.  Worked like a charm.  Whew!!! Avoided a disaster there.

This is a simple, low fat, high carb and protein, dessert if you don't mind artificial sweeteners.  Though 210 calories is a bit high, it's very filling.

1/2 c crushed pineapple in juice plus artificial sweetener to taste (70)
1/2 c Kroger fat free cottage cheese (80)
1/2 c CoolWhip Free (60)

Pineapple on the bottom, layer of cottage cheese, then top with Cool Whip. It's got that sweet/sour taste like cheesecake.   Serving size 1.5 cups (before the air goes out of the Coolwhip).

Calories  Fat Carbs Protein
  210      0g   35g   15g

Last night I dreamed I had a pet slug.  I kid you not!  I had to keep it in a damp towel or else it would dry up.  Analyze that!!   There was more, but it gets even more bizarre.  Someone may call the authorities if I elaborate.  I'll attach a picture.  Maybe it will help to spoil someone's appetite.

Well if you feel like a sugar cube, you must have been doing some eating, not just making.  Tsk! tsk! tsk!   I made some chocolate frosting and threw some peanuts in it tonight and ate it just like that.  It was good.   Better than keeping candy in the house.  At least I had to work a little bit for it.  Exercised my wrist mixing the frosting.

Suffering from "calorie creep" here.  The daily total keeps inching up a little each day. Time to hit the reset button, again.

I think it might be a good idea to get back to making a plan in the morning and sticking with it.   At least for a few days (sigh).

Just noticed Nir had already used the term calorie creep, so I Googled it and found an old article in The Guardian, where the term referred to the food companies gradually increasing the calories in their products.  I  think Nir meant calories gradually creeping up higher than were actually being counted.  I meant just creeping up, period.  So I need a new term, like eating creep.  Hopefully I won't need to discuss that behavior again (yeah, right).

Weekly stats, a little late: (10/29 through 11/04)

Most people just refuse to count their calories, period. They might have an opinion or a view about it "I believe I am eating 1500 calories a day" which they never put to the test because they never stop to figure out exact (or even inexact) counts. The creep either refers to an increase in their intake over time, or just bad accounting which means they are eating more than they think. It could be because their portion sizes are incorrect (they serve themselves a little bit more cereal than they should etc.) or because they never consider those little bites and licks and tiny samples here and there and everywhere.

I also seem to recall 'carb creep' as a concept to be aware of when doing Atkins, where somehow you unintentially consume more than the amount you intended to (which is 20g at the Induction phase - it feels like yesterday but this is actually 5 years ago)

Have had a bout with intestinal virus this week.  That and my stupidity has messed up things a bit.

First there was nothing bland in the house to eat, so I bought a large bag of salty crackers thinking the salt would help to keep hydrated.   Maybe wrong thinking, IDK, but it sure worked in that respect.

Then miscalculated the calories in the crackers (switching number of servings for serving size) which resulted in a 50% undercount for 2-3 days.  Also eating a little more than intended anyway.   I guess I was feeling sorry for myself.   Top it all off the exercise has been almost nothing.

So the weight has shot up to 123.4, and I can feel it, too, don't need the scales to tell me.   But the actual gain should be less than a pound.  I'm glad I still kept track of calories. It takes the mystery out of it.  Otherwise the 123.4 would be depressing.

Regarding the Holiday Challenge, don't know how many days it will take to bring down the trend line on physicsdiet.com because there is not enough information given on how they do it, but what counts is New Years Day.

Back down to 119.4 today.   Had a rough time working out at the gym tonight.  Too many days laying off,
or that pesky virus, or both.   Heart rate got up as high as 174 occasionally on the elliptical, if that meter is correct.  Usually feel more energetic after a workout, tonight I'm beat.

           High | Low   | Average

The next workout at the gym was much better.   Don't know what was the problem last time.   I'm up to 21 (slow) hanging leg lifts.   That's a lot for me because I started out only able to do 6.   I notice most other people swing their legs very fast when they do these.  Slow is harder, I think.

I'm just keeping at it, still counting calories, for some more time.  Hoping I'll have gone through enough different situations that I can develop a feel for how much is enough, and remember to just eat one serving of everything.

Week's stats (11/12 through 11/18):

            High | Low   | Average
Calories:   2190 | 1790  | 2029

It took 6 years for me to gain back 20 pounds last time (2002-2008).  That's only an extra 32 calories per day!

Now one habit I've definitely formed since being on here is I've switched from coffee with cream to black coffee.   No turning back on this one.   I've grown to like it.   That easily amounted to 100 calories per day.

So....Maybe if I just ate like I used to I won't gain it back this time!!!

Hmmm....

That would be too easy to work.
