collegestudent's absolutely right. I did zillions of crunches for years, but never dropped a pant size until I got rid of the spare tire.
The annoying thing was, I could feel the hard muscle beneath the fat - but I surely couldn't see it (or my feet, sometimes!).

BTW - crunches are hugely better than sit-ups...
