I have the Total Gym, not the infomercial one, but the less expenseive one that works just the same. My question to you is this: do you have one? How much have you used it? did you see any improvement with inches lost/weight lost? Firming up? What type of movements did you do on it that you can recommend for firming up the abs/hips/thigh areas? Any input would be very much appreciated and helpful. Thanks!

Hi Cathy -
I looked up Total Gym on the Net and it looks okay.
I think it's possible to obsess too much on the tools used rather than the method.
To people starting out on a weight loss (ie fat loss) program, I usually recommend that they use:
- Some variously-sized water filled plastic bottles
- A low table
- A chair with a straight back
- A large towel (or exercise mat)
- A smaller towel
- A stopwatch
Most of that stuff they already have, or can obtain easily. And most of them have perfectly successful results. If they want, later, I suggest they buy some basic (not too heavy) dumbell weights and some press-up handles.
There's a huge industry out there only too happy to sell you just about anything it thinks you'll buy.
I would imagine that if you use your Total Gym sensibly, thoroughly and regularly, that it will give you acceptable results.
Whereas a twice-the-price deluxe version would do nothing for you if you didn't use it properly.
Focus on the 'how', not the 'what' - that's my advice.
Good luck,
NevD

Kathy - I have a Total Gym, and have found that it does indeed tone, or build, depending on how you use it. I haven't used it for abs, hips, or thighs, but mainly for chest and arms (pull downs and the sort). I have found it works pretty good, using your body weight as resistence. One thing to note - after a while it does squeak.
Hope this helps.

Hi Cathy,
I also have the original Total Gym and use it as part of my circuit training routine.
I do the leg pull for hamstrings, the hip abduction for the outer thighs, the hamstring pull, the inner thigh pull and my favorite, the lunges.

| It is an alright machine but mainly for women more than men. The amount of resistance available just isnt so great for guys. Its just not what a guy would want but I can see it helping women tone pretty well.

I have the TotalTrainer which is like a beefed up knock off of the Total Gym. When I use it(I am battling a rotator problem right now) it works fine. I saw on the TotalGym site where the machine can also be used for Pilates. totalgymdirect.com/pilates.php
One poster mentioned that this machine may not be the best for a man who is looking for a challenge, and I agree. I am 60 and not really looking for the heavy lifting I did as a youth, so this machine is fine for me. I can add an additional 100 lbs of resistance, but I don't see a time when I will need to. | Just a little update. I am finally back to using the TotalGym 3 days a week - for the last 4 weeks - and I find it very challenging. Not Mariusz Pudzianowski type of equipment, but plenty for the average Joe. I am at Level 4 and I can increase to Level 10 and then add 100 extra lbs if I need to. At 60 years old I doubt that I will need to add the extra weight, but you never know. I lifted a lot of weights in my youth and I like the smoothness of this equipment, plus Christy Brinkley looks great in those infomercials.

That was too cute, Dazed!
I've had the original Total Gym for quite a few years; I'm not really sure what all is different in the newer versions - but I think it can be a very useful tool. Unfortunately I rarely use it - bad me; but I do get resistance training at Curves. It offers plenty of resistance for me - not so for my son who is 19 yo and very fit & strong. I really like the pull-up exercise which I would never be able to do otherwise.

I don't really have, I'm a full time office worker who keeps on working overtime, so I just exercise at the office.
