We're on a roll, well a walk .

James, changing shifts all the time must really raise havoc with your body, is that something you always have had to do or is this just a temporary thing? It must be quite stressful.

Thursday 13,967. I puposely parked a about a 1/4 mile from the post office so I got an extra half mile, approx 1000 steps in.

Needed to do a lap around the track tonight to get to 9000 steps today, but I'm getting a lot of strength type exercise instead, so it's all good.

Hiker, I work a rotating shift, and with this week being a maintenance shutdown I had to work an extra shift which shortened my number of off days.  For me the worst part of my current rotation is the transition from 3rd to 1st.  You basically lose a day because that first day off is basically wasted sleeping.  Not to mention that it is impossible to develop any kind of sleep pattern, you are constantly readjusting each week as your shift changes.

Total steps for Thursday = roughly 11,000.  I am giving myself credit for 2k steps for cutting the grass to get me to 11K.  I went for an early morning 3 mile walk yesterday and planned on a second walk in the evening but ran out of steam in the afternoon.  Did try to take a nap in the afternoon but got disturbed just as I was dozing off and never really recovered.

James, that sounds tough changing back and forth. I understand it may be more fair to everone but it still does not sound like alot of fun.

Nancy, you do great on the strength stuff, I need to work on that.

Friday 14,787--must have moved more than usual today because it was easy, nothing extra.

I just discovered that doing "poop patrol" in my back yard is 1,442 step...and the added benefit of all the bending. Now if only my dogs were this smart.

That is awesome Hiker, but if you trained your dogs to do this you would miss out on all that extra exercise.

Sunday 13,951-

-not sure why it was so easy to get them in this weekend  but I did make sure to go for a 3 mile walk each day because I was thinking I might not get them in...and I wouldn't have so I guess it was a good idea.

I laughed when I read your posts about getting to bed early. I'm embarrassed to say it but I go to bed at 9:00 every night and I fall right o sleep. I usually get about around 5:30 but I get a good 8 plus hours without it I'm a bear. Naps never work for me, they just make me stay up later then I don't want to get up the next day so if I don't get my full night for whatever reason it's best to let it go. We're all different though, naps are great for some people.

Hiker, I remember you mentioning before about going to bed early. Would you mind telling me when you think this habit started in your life? In childhood, maybe?

My dad worked in a factory, always on the 6-midnight shift. My mom and I always stayed up til he got home, sometimes even on a school night. I always wondered if that's how my night owl habit got started.  Or maybe it's genetic, since my dad preferred that shift too.

Off for my evening walk to make up steps.   Sitting on only 5770 right now.

Going to bed early did not help any last night, asleep by 9, wide awake by 3. Went for a 2 mile walk tonight, hope that helps me sleep better.

Bed times were stict and early in my home, my stepfather had to be to work at 6 am so my mother was up by 5 and I think we pretty much got up then too. I do know before I started work and I was in high school people were kind of shocked that I went to bed on my own at like 9pm. Of course that all changed when I started working after school and doing the things teenagers do, I was up until all hours but I was also always tired. Once past those crazy years I went back to going to bed early. I can sleep even in the summer when it's still light out at 9pm...doesn't bother me one bit . And I love my early mornings. When I retire I might move it up an hour but no more than that, I hate to waste a morning sleeping.

Maybe, if you guys do want to try going to bed earlier just move up your usual bed time 15 minutes and then keep moving it every couple weeks. I have no idea if that will help but it might.

James, in your case where you change shifts all the time I have no idea how you sleep at all, my internal clock would be haywire.

Tuesday -- 12,139--just made my goal. Maybe I should go for a walk...maybe not.

Hiker, rotating shifts does make it hard to develop any kind of normal sleep habits.  My first experience with a rotating shift seemed a lot easier, only worked 3 or 4 days/nights in a row.  You were never on night shift long enough to really fully adjust.  My current rotation I stay on each shift for a full week, plenty of time to adjust just in time to "shift" again.  Everyone is different, some people have no problem with it, while others struggle, some never manage to adjust and end up quitting.  Having a family throws even more of a challenge into it.  Right now it does pay the bills, and I actually see my family more than I did in my previous job, so I guess sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad.

Total steps today = 13,845  Went for a 2 mile walk before the temps started to drop this evening.  Good thing because now the thunder is rattling the windows and the rain has begun.

Had a busy day today, was sitting at just over 12K steps for the day and was thinking about calling it a day.  Then I thought about how I have been going for walks every night and did not want to break that routine, went for a 2 mile walk and ended with 16,117 steps for the day.

Why do I check the computer to see if it's raining? Gave up on the evening walk early on, because the internet said it was raining and would continue until 11pm. Then at 10 pm I went outside and everything was dry, so I went for a quick walk to get the step count up, else I'd have had to clean house. :nono:  Just barely made it.

Nancy, my husband is worse....he checks the weather in Boston, which is 50 miles away and tries to tell me that's our weather. As I point out to him, our temperatures can be 20 degrees in either direction and as for rain...well Boston has nothing to do with us, in fact we usually get it first. But nevertheless he continues to tell me the weather in Boston :dizzy:. Guess looking out the door might be the most sensible thing LOL.

Just before supper I saw my pedometer count was a little low so I went out for a quick one mile walk, it was hot but I am glad I went.

Thursday--13,962.

What did we do before this modern age of information. Hard to believe we dared to venture outside with only the 6pm weather forecast to go on. I will actually check several different weather service forecast to find the one I like the best, then I look outside to see what is actually happening.

My phone registered over 18K steps today, but about 4K of those were while cutting the grass on a riding mower. Therefore I will give myself credit for 14K steps. Will finish cutting with the push mower tomorrow and leave the phone in the kitchen.

After cutting the grass this morning was pretty inactive the rest of the day, so went for a 3 mile walk tonight.  Phone shows 9,806 steps not counting cutting the grass (did not carry phone).  Will give myself credit for 2k steps for cutting grass to give me a total of 11,806 for the day.

It's hard to build up steps when you keep falling asleep all day.  Catching up for the week I guess.  I could probably add a few steps the rest of the evening, but the number it shows right now might be good luck.

Saturday -- 19,116 I got a 5 mile walk in today and then did a lot of running around.

I've decided my pedometer is being a little generous so I am taking 10% off each day, today it read 21,240 to I will cound it as a little over 19k. I think that is a little more accurate.

Finally, just barely!  My problem is not the evening walk, I'm still doing that between rain showers, it's that I'm not doing enough walking the rest of the day lately.    Need to get in 6000 steps just piddling around to make it to 9000.

It is amazing how little I can move during the day, especially if I am busy at work. The pedometer is really helping to show me how I really need to make an effort to get in at least a couple  miles a day walking.

Thursday--13,148

Not sure how often I will be on here until after the 20th but I will try to be sure I keep my step count up.

I am back, great work Nancy and Hiker, you have both done great over the past week.  Me not so well, had good days (over 15K steps) and bad days (3K steps - spent most of day on boat) but the eating did the most harm.  Time to recommit and move forward.

Friday total = 8,254 steps.  Need to do better today.

Sunday total = 9,711  May get the last 300 in before going to bed.  Basically had a lazy Sunday today, went to my parents house this morning to pick some peas and butter beans.  Spent the rest of the day shelling and cleaning the peas and beans, ended up with about a gallon and a half for peas, and about half a gallon of butter beans.  Ended the day with a 3 mile walk.

Monday total = 10,226  Had to go for a 3 mile walk to break 10K.  Have got to figure out how to get in some more exercise on my off days.  I usually end up doing things that do not require a lot of moving about.  Start back on 3rd shift tomorrow night, will be interesting to see if I can continue to get in my daily walk.

Got some splainin' to do here.  Worked all day on the porch, but very few horizontal steps, mostly up and down a ladder (many many times).  This pedometer goes into sleep mode to save batteries when I stand still very long, and it seems to take quite a jolt to wake it up.  Did the evening walk, or it would be <5000. Got lots of leg and arm strength exercise, so that's good.
