Hello all,

As some of you may have read in my other post, I have gained 30 lbs this year at school and am trying to lose it before I go back. I;ve been doing some research and green tea keeps popping up in articles, so I went out and bought a box of 40 bags haha. I brewed some today and it was absolutely disgusting but if it really works then I'm willing to stick with it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Also, is it just as good (or better) to take green tea extract pills instead of the actual drink?

I find that green tea tastes kinda akward if you get the wrong kind. It works, as well as its very good for you. It boosts your metabolism not by much, but its a great habit to get into drinking a cup every morning.

Kinda like Oatmeal. :chew::chicken:

I drink green tea on a daily basis.. sometimes three, sometimes more, a day.  I actually substituted it for a lot of other things that i have dropped from my diet that were a lot less healthy for me.  If u find the taste not so nice, mix it with another kind of tea.. dont have milk with it, but i have read that u can add a touch of honey.  I also  enjoy the green tea mixes.  On the market there are many different types of herbal teas, and the blends with green tea in them are delish.. there is one called, Chai with Green tea, made by Twinings which i find very nice.. but its all a matter of taste really.  I think i have pretty much tried them all.  I have lost weight, (from a Aus size 14 down to an aus 8/10) but i cannot put that down to the green tea alone.  It does however help with metabolism but i am not sure how much ..

hope this helps somewhat.. ( i didnt mean to ramble for so long )

Hi Samantha and welcome :)  I read your other post as well. I too believe when you change your lifestyle things will happen. More exercise, more nutritious choices.  I personally Love Green Tea. I buy the simple Lipton bags. Plain is O.K. but I prefer the Honey or Berry flavors.  I make a soup mug full in the morning and sip it 'till it's gone. I do add a packet of Splenda. They make a sample box that has berry, honey, lemon, mint & plain.  Small box and you can decide what you like. I drank green tea before the weight loss thing was sooo important. I believe that all your choices are important, Green tea will not do it all. It's not "the cure". Get out, get moving and watch everything you put between your lips. Read labels!!! know what's in your food. Some things may surprise you.  Good luck

I do like plain tea....but my favorite this time of year is to make "Sun" tea.    I have a Sun tea jar, which I fill with cold water and add about 16 bags of green or black tea and also about 5-6 bags of mint tea.    Then I set it outside in the full sun to "brew" while I work.    I bring it in, remove the bags and set the whole jar in the refrigerator (it has a spigot on it).   When I leave for work in the morning, I fill an empty water bottle with my tea and pop it in the frig at work until sometime in the afternoon.   I think it's the mint that makes the tea.    I don't sweeten it, but you could if you really need to.          Hisgal:heart:

Lee,  good advice!   We'd all like a magic diet pill, but just good sound nutrition and sensible eating is what will get us there.   Of course, boosting our metabolism can't hurt:D

Samantha    Tastes can be acquired. And green tea is good for you. It is the national drink of Japan but huge quantities are produced in China. I'm diabetic so I don't drink most common drinks available. I'm allergic to coffee and don't much like carbonation. Therefore I drink tea...lots of different kinds of tea.

Because you may know this...Briefly there are 4 kinds of tea. Black tea is fully fermented. Oolong tea, popular in asia, is partially fermented. Green tea is not fermented. And herbal tea usually contains no actual tea but is an infusion of some other substance. Fermentation and what it's made from determine what type it is so something like white tea, made from tea flowers but not fermented, is a kind of green tea.

Because green tea is essentially "raw" it is the hardest to effect the taste like you see in black and herbal tea. That doesn't mean that it can't taste different. For best results, always use whole green tea. It's not as important with other kinds of tea because their taste is processed into them. The best way to experience the range of taste is to brew some Chinese "gunpowder" tea pellets and some Japanese SenCha and compare the taste. Find a type you like best. You can make sun tea by adding loose leaves to a sun tea bottle and filtering the tea when you drink it.

It is healthy for you especially when you exercise. I used to just drink green tea before I exercise but now I often use weakened green tea in my water bottle during exercise. There are also several herbal teas that a great before, during and after a workout. There are many sites on the web with info about tea. Because Peter doesn't like sites posted in messages, PM me if you want an example.

Micromentor,

I had been well aware of the health benefits of green tea for quite some time but I could never quite stomach the taste. Like you, I don't like coffee or carbonated beverages but have always been a fan of flavored herbal teas (just not green haha). Recently, I discovered the miracle of adding just a bit of honey or sugar while it's still hot and that makes it soooo much more bearable (dare I say almost good!). I have a health food store in town that I like shopping at so I don't think I will be doing much shopping online. However I was wondering, what is your opinion of the merits of taking green tea CAPSULES? I have seen these at many stores and have always wanted to try them but feel as if they would be a waste of money. I realize green tea is NOT the "magic pill" but hey anything that helps even a little is great!

Personally, i dont think they are anywhere close to being the same.  The reason for this is that the body acts differently to a tablet form than it does a drink .  Its a bit like taking vitamins.  IF ur body is lacking the vitamins it needs, it can possibly get them from the tablets, but its far better to get them from the foods one eats.  Same goes with the green tea.  My method of losing the weight i did, was basically trying to eat or drink foods in their rawest form.  Instead of peanut butter, eat the peanut.  Instead of white flour, have wholemeal.  etc etc.  There are so many basic foods that are good for us, that just get missed and trodden on by processed foods that we miss out on the essentials of eating. !!

anyways, thats my five minutes worth.. blessings and good health

Samantha ... To be honest, I actually like the taste of green tea. I have about 5 different ones here. A lower grade Japanese Yama Moto Yama green tea, a high grade Maeda-En Sen Cha, Maeda-En Genmai Cha (with brown rice), a Chinese gunpowder, and a Chinese Kui Jian (one of their best, kui means chief or best). Unlike the asians, I usually drink them iced.

But your real question is about taking capsules. As far as ingesting the green tea, how you get it doesn't much matter. If you get good tea, the touted benefits will definately help you. The Japanese sprinkle Macha on food the way we use powered sugar. (Macha is the fine powered green tea used in Japanese tea ceremony) If the capsules are filled correctly then you don't get much air in them which causes gas. If they do have air ....... (embarrassing)

You can't be sure of the tea quality used in the capsules so you need to find a reputable brand. In the producing countries ALL of the plant is used and most turned into a grade of tea. You could be buying tea made from roots and stems. You can't tell because it's ground into a powder. Its not that there in no benefit from this tea quality, its just that you shouldn't be paying a premium price for it.

I feel that most of the hype about the capsules comes from disreputable dealers who get low quality tea and sell it at a premium price. There are good quality capsules out there, but their manufacturers don't need to be so loud because the product speaks for itself. Go to a Whole Foods or Wild Oats store or your local health food store and talk to someone about brand quality. As far as "does it work?"  Yes, it does.

BTW...I don't usually buy foods over the internet either. I do use it as an information source to make me a more saavy consumer of products I'm somewhat novice to.

Lori.... I agree with you completely. I also like to get my foods in the purest form possible. But it really doesn't matter if you eat the tea or make a tea infusion. If the tea in the capsules is a high quality tea, then how much purer can you get it. It then becomes a question of whether it's better to eat tea or drink tea.

Hi guys I am new to this forum and glancing through the different topics and seen the green tea comments. Green tea is  wonderful when I started drinking it I would buy the loose tea at the health food store and use a tea ball I really liked it .walmart has a very good green tea  Its called" Uncle Lees Tea" It is very good but with any green tea 2 cups a day wont really show any great results. You need to drink at least 5 to 6 cups a day and have it with your meal or after your meal, not sure if everybody is the same this way but if I have green tea before I eat I get really sick to my stomach.  Also let it steep for 5 to 10 mins to get the value out of it. we use to drink coffee with cream and sugar  we  quit coffee and started drinking green tea we dont add anything to it like milk we drink it black but if you have any fresh mint leaves add one to it , gives it a change or even a little lemon and honey if you like.

i watched a program on the telly about green tea and black tea.. and which one is better for you.. it turns out that green tea is only slightly better.. with only slightly a higher level of anti oxidants etc.  I guess this is because green tea and black tea are the same product, its just that green tea is processed differently and at a different age than the black tea.  I found its better for me because i dont have milk or sugar with green tea, and yet i do with black tea, so therefore green tea is a healthier option.  I dont drink coffee at all .

i dont think drinking green tea by itself would in affect make anyone lose weight but i do believe it is good for you to drink it ..

I take mega T-green tea capsules (dietary supplement) and they seem to help boost my metabolism, but i doubt it is the same as drinking green tea. The green tea pills i take have 600 mg of green tea in them. They also have 100 mg of calcium.

If you want to drink it, there are so many green teas out there. I prefer green tea with mint.

I have read an article about the benefits of green tea in the fitnessRx  apr 2006 issue.  i just want to share with you some of the things written about green tea:

-  "inhibiting enzymes involved in digestion of starches and sugars, blocking absorption of simple sugars and cholesterol and antiangiogenic effects(reducing body fat and blocking the growth of new blood vessels)"

-  "EGCG/eppigallocatechin gallate which is found in green tea is the one responsible to many of green teas benefits.  Studies done with ECGC administered in obese rats resulted in marked decrease in body weight and food intake, with lower blood glucose and insulin levels. Results of rat and human studies strongly support the assumption that EGCG may be a viable candidte for weight loss although not knowing the how ECG affects the body, it is difficult to properly recommend its use for general comsumption."

-  "Rats fed a high  fat diet for 5 months bacame obese, but those who supplemented EGCG avoided weight gain.  Interestingly, weight gain ws avoided, even though EGCG did not reduce the amount of food consumed.  Further, increase in blood sugar normally experience in mice on high fat diets was also avoided."

- "In a study of obese rats, EGCG reduced body fat stores significntly even though calorie intake was no diferent, lower blood triglycerides was noted. "

-  "In studying the direct effect of EGCG n fat cells, it was noted that many of the enzymes involved in fat burning were increased while those involved in fat storage were reduced.  A generation of new fat cells was greatly inhibited."

Although these studies were done in rodents, it lays the groundwork for futher development of EGCG as weight loss supplement that might safely and effectively help prevent weight gain and reduce obesity rates.

There are acually 4 types of tea available from the tea plant.  Black, green, oolong and white.  White tea wasn't widely available until recently.  It is picked before the leaves of the plants open and looks white when picked, hence the name.  It is a light green color when brewed and has the hightest anti-oxidents of all the teas.  For those of you who do not like the "grassy" taste of green tea - try white tea.  No grassy taste.

I cant exactly answer your question, I can say that any real green tea will help. But drinking green tea isn't going to help with any MAJOR weight loss. Green tea is something that thins your blood, you know.

Diet pills are often dangerous and packed with other unhealthy ingredients,
but there’s a reason they use green tea.

Green tea helps you lose weight.

Of course it won’t be “20 pounds in one week” or other nonsense that marketing companies like to claim, but green tea has been scientifically proven to burn calories and block fat absorption.

i just read all about it.  Apparently it is a law suit saying it makes improper promises about diet etc.  So if you ever bought you can fill in form and get money back even without receipts.
it's an opportunity to get the refund who bought their products!

The taste of green tea may not be that good as compared to other teas but it definitely takes a rewarding effect. Incorporating other efforts such as exercise and basic meal diet may guaranty a far more better result. Aside from its dieting value, green tea also is a healthy drink that provides essential health advantages.

It's important to remember that true tea - tea that comes from the tea plant - comes in the white, green and black varieties. If a study says that green tea is good for you, good for weight loss, etc, then all tea varieties will provide this benefit. Although black tea is more heavily processed than green tea, it will provide the same benefits, but maybe at a lesser extent. White tea is the least processed of the varieties, so it's highly recommended to drink this as well.

The main point is that if you don't like the flavor of green tea (there's lots of different types and grades of green tea so try lots to get a true feel for the flavors), then drink black or white. Find the tea or teas that you like best and drink those. You'll be drinking an extremely healthy beverage with high health values no matter what.

Also, don't be afraid to drink two herbal "teas" that have very high antioxidant values and those are: rooibos (or "red") tea, and mate'. They aren't true teas but they're incredibly good for you.

There are tons of ways to loose weight and knowing that green tea is one of that.  You may drink green tea in its raw form but I prefer to mix a bit of lemon juice and honey to it so as to make the tea taste great. Also keep in mind that there is no restriction that you should drink tea only once per day; you can drink it as often as you want, and remember that the more you drink green tea, the faster you would lose weight. Most people are overweight, and heart disease is caused by the intake of bad cholesterol.  Then there's this group of people with heart disease who are not overweight.  This is the group that can claim to have received the short end of the rod and suffer the consequences of LDL or bad cholesterol.  It is a type of cholesterol that is good and eat a lot which helps to combat the disease.  LDL cholesterol should be removed from his body, and green tea can help you remove them from the system.  This fight against heart disease.

The secret of green tea lies in the fact that it is rich in polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).  EGCG is a powerful antioxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, which kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.  It was also effective in reducing LDL cholesterol, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots.  The latter has a greater significance when you consider that thrombosis (abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.
Green tea contains antioxidants, the most powerful of these is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).  This is the active agent that increases the body's resistance to diseases such as heart disease.  This will allow the user to maintain a healthy body weight by reducing the amount of calories you take in order to maintain a healthy weight through a long life.  After learning the benefits of green tea, there are many people who have changed their morning coffee for a cup of green tea.  You can reduce your weight long term, but it also requires a change of lifestyle completely.

I just finished a wonderful cup of green tea. Some advice though, the steep time for green tea is only 1-2 minutes, much shorter than my chai or herbal. I've found that longer steep or too hot of water for green tea makes me have an upset stomach. I actually set a timer so I don't forget it!

Unfortunately, I haven't had any success with losing weight when I drink my daily cup, but I don't add any sweeteners so I guess it doesn't hurt.

i also am very confused about the results of green tea. I tried to drink a lot of it and i guess i may have lost some weight, but it could also have been because i was drinking so much fluid, i always felt full so couldnt eat that much.

Anyone else?

Ive never seen any good proof green tea helps weight loss. It does have caffeine but Ive never seen a study where green tea caused weight loss or caussed any more weight loss than just eating fewer calories

there are many roads to weight loss and green tea is healthy so if it works for you thats fine.

I'm going to the store right now to buy some green tea. Can the diet lipton tea drink in the bottle be the same as tea bags? I don't really do hot drinks.

if you drink more than 5 cups of tea per day you can actually burn 50 calories per day. Isnt alot but will add up over time.

By drinking Tea you wont lose alot of weight however it can aid weight loss if followed with a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Green tea is great for curbing appetite and it tastes pretty darn good too, but its not going to magically take off the pounds.  Its a good tool in combination with a healthy caloric deficit and a fitness plan, but its not a magical substance.

Have you ever heard of combination of green tea and capsaicin? Caspaicin is the main ingredient in the recent preparations for weight loss. Green tea & capsaicin - it's the winning combination!

No one has heard of this? I read the following: Green tea and Capseicin exhibit pronounced thermogenic effect, thus raising consumption, breakdown and brining up of fats (fatty acid combustion). Capseicin and Green Tea stimulate lipolysis, leading to accelerated degradation of fat, and act to reduce appetite, reduce fat absorption from the digestive system, leading to the feeling of fullness. Both plants reduce BMI, size of the waist and lead to a reduction in body weight. Also, they reduce blood sugar levels, enabling better utilization of glucose in the tissues as a source of energy. Both plants reduce triglycerides and cholesterol (especially the bad LDL cholesterol). They also serve as blood pressure reducers. In this way they have a protective effect on heart and blood vessels. Green Tea and Capseicin have strong antioxidant activity. (SELF PROMOTION). Healthy plants for a healthy weight loss!

I'm wondering about Fluffy's question, too.  I've heard about the benefits of green tea, and like the taste, but am not a fan of hot tea.  Also, I usually stay busy with work, school, kids, etc, so I need stuff that's "on the go."

What about the Lipton bottled green tea?  I like that, especially the citrus flavored, and it has no calories.  Yes, I know it has either aspartame or splenda, but I'm picking my battles and right now, that's not one of them.
