Does anyone else find it slightly sickening that we as a society find it acceptable to spend thousands of dollars on having fat surgically removed from our bodies while millions of people around the world are literally starving to death?  I know there are medical circumstances where surgery is necessary, but before doing surgery for cosmetic reasons, please at least do a calculation of how many children you could feed with that money.   I don't want to sound too preachy, just a thought I wanted to put out there! :rose:

I'd like to think that the people that have enough money to spend excessive amounts on such things also give a lot to charity. Or maybe the surgeon that's getting their money will give to charity. Wishful thinking? Maybe.

BTW, I used to think all cosmetic surgery was vain and excessive. And I don't agree with an overweight person having liposuction to solve their problem. In fact, I think they'd likely just put more weight back on.

However, lets say that someone does a great job of learning to eat well and exercise and gets rid of most all of their fat. But they just can't get rid of a "spare tire" or some other bulge. Or maybe they lost ALL their fat but have so much excess skin that a tummy tuck or whatever might make a big difference. I think they might have earned a (surgical) reward for their achievement.

If that's how they want to spend their money. And they give to charity! ;)

Just MY thoughts...

When I get down to a healthy weight and have kept it there for a year I've promised myself to have a little "toning" courtesy of a good plastic surgeon.  That's better than staying heavy just so my boobs are a size I can live with!!!!  Which I guarantee has been a factor in my weight issues!  Of course that looks crazy to me now that I see it in writing--why did it take me so long to figure out that I didn't have to stay fat just so that part of me would be fat as well.  I could've done this a long time ago!!

Well that's water under the bridge for sure!  Just coincidentally I do give money to charity, but I think plastic surgery is such a personal choice that it does not have to be justified.  Maybe when I get to that point I won't actually have it, but I SURE want to have the CHOICE!

I'm hoping to have a breast-lift/reduction eventually.  I was born with genes that make me have overly-large breasts and gravity has made them pay the price.  A friend of mine had it done and it has relieved her back pain and made it much easier for her to excersize.  Wanting this done isn't all for cosmetic reasons, but I'll admit that much of it is.  It's hard to see your body go at a young age and I see no reason to regain it, to a certain point.

I do have a question that I haven't heard alot about, is it possible to loose the extra skin if you keep up the diet and keep working out religiously, basically will it eventually shrink back into place or am I off base here?

Currently I'm not doing aerobics but I am doing 30-40 minutes of cardio, then working in strength training.

I have read up on the skin brushing and its worth a shot for a few months, I'm already in the shower anyways so no time or effort wasted (heck even will burn a few calories moving my arms ;)) I will not go the surgical path for fear that the inactivity from the surgery will set me back fairly far and waiting a month - two months is like starting all over again.

Everyone's skin is SOOOOO different and you may be one of the lucky ones that doesn't have loose skin.  I have heard that if you DO have loose skin the only way to get rid of it is through surgery--has to do with the elasticity apparently.

Your plan of stimulating the skin is great for several reasons--it increases the blood flow to the area and that is always a good thing, and you will scrub off the dead skin cells which leaves a nice glow.

Well, I can't solve the world's problems and feed all the hungry and put a roof over the heads of all the homeless and don't ask me why someone would even make such a petty statement in comparison to cosmetic surgery.  Cosmetic surgery is totally a personal and very private decision and often times necessary for health and well being purposes.

To answer your question about skin shrinking back after losing weight..  It might happen in the short term BUT if you are or were extremely obese and lose the weight the skin will sag lower and lower as you age.  I am a testament to that and to cosmetic surgery.  I am in my 60's and lost 125 lbs when I was 28 yr old and my skin was taut and I looked darn good UNTIL I was in my early 50's and the skin in my abdominal area kept sagging lower until it was midway to my knees and a hygenic concern.  It was worth every penny to have that skin removed.  My self confidence returned and I felt very good about myself.  Then about 4 years ago the skin on my underarms started sagging tremendously..  Just before my doctor removed the excess skin last December she measured and it was 14 inches long.. Now my arms look GREAT and by mid summer I'll be wearing tank tops because the scar is getting lighter by the day.  b.t.w.  If anyone sees the scars and asks I'll tell them because I am proud that I lost so much weight and kept it off all these years by diligently watching what I eat and faithfully exercising.

I'll step down off my soap box now..

Chocoholic you can say that about anything. All the money spent on beauty products that don't work, extra food you don't need and throw out, cigarettes, etc. I wish the world would do something to help starving children, but it takes a special person to get the ball rolling. Personally I think that the city should collect everyone's leftovers to feed the homeless. I would imagine it cost money. Of course everyone has a right to their own money and body so I am not against plastic surgery. I always thought the idea of liposuction was to remove fat from areas where you can't lose it with diet and exercise.
Like hips or thighs or belly. You are right though, we should take that money and help the starving children around the world, but personally I would send them birth control or education on birth control. That would definitely solve the hunger problem.
