Hi my name is Cassie.  I have been trying for many years to lose weight without any success.  I have tried all the fad diets with little success.  I am hoping to find another alternative that will help me with my problem.  If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.  I am 50+ years old and desperate to better my health.  I am very limited on the exercises that I can do due to my weight but I am willing to try anything at this point to better my situation.

You are asking a very complex question.

How can I loose weight? So so many answers.

I'll try to answer it as simple as possible.

To loose weight you must eat less calories than you use. The general rule is not less than 1200 cal because then you will burn of your muscle and not your fat, which no one wants of course!

What has worked for me is calorie counting. I wrote down what I ate on this website (it's in danish, so I won't recommend it to you, but you could try and find an english website there are plenty out there, and a calorie calculator on this site as well!) and it calcutated how many calories it was. After a while, I knew how many calories was in what, and started thinking on what I could improve. Generally fruits and veg have less calories than most other foods so they are always a safe bet! I also watch my portions, so I don't go over my calorie budget.

So one method is definately calorie counting. You have a certian amount of calories you can eat each day to be under what you burn by doing your daily stuff. I haven't run your numbers, but I try to be around 1500 because I am not very active, sometimes I am even lower and sometimes over but I try to stay under what I burn which is around 1800 cal. But I am much younger than you, so you should maybe check it out first.

And yes, healthy foods are generally lower in calories, they fill you up longer and some even kickstart you metabolism, so try to incorperate them into your day. But not on top of your normal food, INSTEAD of it

I'm sorry if this sounds like jibberish, but this is only one (badly explained :dizzy:) method, and there are many others that are more diet-plan like, that tell you exactly what you should and shouldn't eat (I personally can't stand that) and there are others that, include cheat days, up days or down days and so on. There are sooo many things you can chose from. Check out the diet-plans board.

What also helped me was as I lost weight, to put it on a graph and write a diary entry on each day (I did this on that website, but you can start your diary her on CPH). It is very motivating to see the weightloss on black and white, especially when you don't think you can see it in the mirror! Best of Luck!

I agree with the above. To re-iterate: exercise is beneficial but not neccessary as a calorie deficit can be achieved with food using a variety of approaches. You might like the transparency of calorie counting or the simplicity of avoiding food groups. I think the best place to start is to read the tutorial.

Ok, I don't know what will work for you, but this is what I did when I started out. First I limited my soda. I cut back to three a day. One in the morning, one at noon and one at night.

Then I added water to my diet. Drank water all the time. Forced it until it became a habit.

Then I started to change what kinds of food I was eating. Started to buy diet stuff, fat free, low fat, etc, items. Some things went in the garbage, but some I liked. Also, research your foods. You will find out which ones are healthier for you and which ones are bad for you. Try out new foods also. You never know what kind of healthy foods you might like.

I made a few rules for myself. Like not to eat things I didn't like. Not to eat more when I was full. Things like that.

Exercise~ well to be honest I never exercise through the first 40lbs that I lost. But, then when I developed a cholesterol problem, I started exercising and now do it daily. I would recommend walking. Just a little bit at a time. After you get use to it the time will get be more and more. When I started out, I was very slow and didn't go to far. Now, I can actually jog. I recently purchased a recumbent bike and really enjoy it as well. Other options would be free hand weights. The more muscle you have the more fat you will burn.

Ok, well that's all I can think of for now. Good Luck to you!

Hungrygirl.com has a lot of good diet foods and recipes and before i started the diet that i'm currently on i used alot of the info they have on the site. They give alternative ideas for food thats normally not good for you.  They give all of the nutritional info and the point value if your into weight watchers.

Follow this simple rules to jump start your LIFE! This is what I am doing and I am seing great results.

Indulge Your Thirst

Drinking lots of water is one of the most effective ways to lose weight.  Replace your thirst for beverages with clean clear refreshing water. Drinking sodas and other carbonated drinks guarantees that you will gain weight because of the high concentration of sugars or artificial sweeteners in those products. From now on consider water your best friend and now drink lots of water to lose weight.

For Christ sake move your feet. Stop three or four blocks from your house and enjoy the walk home. If you need to go three or four blocks please don't jump into your car or a taxi or a bus, exercise your feet. If you live in an elevator building, climb some stairs everyday. This little routine will work wonders for your figure by helping you lose weight.

Stop eating while you're busy. Don't eat while driving or doing other activities. Consume your food in relative tranquility, while taking your time to masticate well before swallowing. From now on pay attention to what you eat by carefully looking at your food before putting it in your mouth. Make an effort to control your food and not the food control you. The best way to control your food is not to finish what is on your plate. Yes, delicious or not, only eat 80% to 90% or less of your portion. It is simple steps like this that will help you lose weight naturally and faster.

my tip to you would be to post in one of the FL4I topics to get support from the people who believe in it. (hint: at the end of the day fat loss boils down to a calorie deficit - you need a daily deficit of 500 calories to lose a pound a week)

I think you may want to start with positive affirmations about who you are and who you are going to be. Tell them to yourself morning and night and throughout the day. Eventually you will start to believe and then act on them. Good luck!

Getting started with any weight loss program is hard and often frustrating when you are trying to find the one that is right for you.  For your situation I would suggest and exercise program consisting of walking.  It is such a great exercise that is often overlooked.  It isn't too rigorous on your body and will help shed pounds if done consistently.  Good luck with your quest to lose weight and be healthy.
