hey everyone...ok, somewhere in here i read about body brushing but cant find it now....so here i am with a new thread.....(i feel so ed-umacated using that term:tongue:) about body brushing because i am curious.

i was looking at my body in our huge bathroom mirrors and i am critical of it. i am toning somewhere underneath all that "cellulitey #%@&!" and i know the muscles are there, i can see them. But, I would like to smooth it out and i wonder if anyone has tried body brushing. I laugh cuz I have had the brush that i saw online, but it seems like it would hurt, esp doing it dry? which i guess is the best way to do it?

any takers????

From my understanding it's suppose to brush away dead skin cells, then you get in the shower and down the drain they go.

It's suppose to be really good for your skin. I read that you are not suppose to do the face and that you are suppose to start at the feet, work your way up. Making strokes in an up right motion.

I have done it many times, can't say that I have seen much improvement, but then I am not real consistence about it either.

Do a search on u-tube, you might get some more information on it.

I find the brush a little harsh in the winter time, when my skin is dry, otherwise it doesn't bother me. Mine is an old bath brush that my husband had in some stuff he had gotten from his grandmother. Mine doesn't have a long handle. That would be nice, cause I can't reach my back very well.

Well, that's about all I know on it...good luck..

that is what i saw on the internet, the one with a oval bristle brush and the long wooden handle to brush the back?

i guess I am thinking it will hurt too? its awkward to try to go from down up as well..but maybe I will ask for a fun basket of bathing goodies with a loofah (i saw that works too...) in in and I can get started. I wonder if she scrunchie plastic like loofas would do the trick? it seems to be you have to rub harder but the result could be the same? I am like you, consistency? blah...that is never easy to do!!!

i think my skin looks healthy, its the ripply stuff that is obviously cellulite and fat..eehttp://www...and well, you cant scrub that away or none of us would diet. I dont know. I use the self tanner, that keeps me glowy, i just wanted a way to make me appear smoother...maybe this isnt the technique to use?

hmm.....how do we make ourselves smoother in the process of losing weight????:dizzy:

My problem area is my lower stomach. Allot of cellulite/stretch marks in that area, so far with the body brushing, some crunches it didn't look much better. I was even using this high dollar cream. But, after all that. I started to jog a little bit. Wow, that has made a difference. I don't know why, but it has.

I would say, just try out different things and see for yourself what helps and what doesn't..

Wal Mart has a natural bristle brush for .94 cents!  I've been doing it for about 2 months now.  Okay I do forget sometimes.  My skin is soooo soft!  And I have been using the Nivea Goodbye Celulite on my legs and behind.  I use the Nivea Skin Firming cream on my stomach, face, and neck.  I must say....the stetch marks on my stomach were a dark purplish color and now they are a light pink.  I don't know if it's the brush, the cream or both.  Give it a try and don't spend a crazy amount on a brush!

I'll have to try that nivea stuff. I've been using this stuff that is really expensive and I really don't like it. It has a cooling effect on your skin after you put it on. So, since I am cold all the time, I hate that feeling.

hi guys, just to fill you in on body brushing, its designed to work in 3 ways

1. it increases the circulation in the skin, and makes the skin tingle (in a good way)

2. it helps to move toxins through the lymphatic system, which is very helpful as the lymphatic system doesnt have a pulse so all the yuck stuff just sits there in the body.

3. yes it also helps to remove surface dry skin.

regular body brushing is very beneficial, it does wonders for the skin, and dont forget to moisturise.

i got a small hand held flat loofah in my stocking, so i will give it a shot! I asked for that since its really just my upper leg and lower tummy that I wish to make look smoother. I dont know if it will work or not, but its worth a try. My problem is, i read it should be done in the morning before you shower...but i shower at nite.....or after my workouts....

ok, i wil try and see.

so you brush from the toes up in a long stroke then  you get into the shower and wash and rinse in cycles of three with hot and cold water? i read that on a site about it.

Any thoughts on the best procedure to accomplish your task? dry skin? no lotion until after the shower?

Thanks guys!!!

My mom has the body brush. I've tried it. It is good for stimulating the lymph circulation which helps to remove toxins. Fat is a pro for storing toxins. The more toxins in your body the harder to lose fat. If you have cellulite it is because of the tissue that holds your fat in place. The tissue is kind of like a fish net stocking, so to speak. Genetics have decided if your mesh is regular or irregular. Irregular causes cellulite. It's basically fat bulging though, i know, that doesn't sound so nice. You can reduce the appearance and it is possible to get rid of the appearance completely. However, you can't do anything about the 'irregular mesh'. Eliminating toxins helps to make your pockets of fat more accessible when burning calories. Massage your legs. Eat a healthy whole food diet with little to no toxins. Try a detox diet or ritual including cleansing detox drinks (more research required). Jumping rope is great for cellulite. As for the skin brush, I do use one. But, it was a $1.99 foot brush from the drug store...

Jo Jo got it right on!  I took some spa and aromatherapy classes a while back and we did all sorts of awesome techniques!  Other things you can do if you don't want to go to a spa is make home made salt or sugar scrubs! (I prefer salt scrubs because they aren't sticky and I can't help but think of how bacteria feeds on sugars...)

Basic scrubs use a light oil (almond, grape seed) you can pick a bottle up from the cooking oil section at stores!  Grape seed oil is supposedly REALLY close to the oil our skin produces and there's all kinds of nutrients in it.   Try to get organic stuff to make sure it's unadulterated!

Next take medium coarse to fine ground SEA SALT or Raw cane sugars.  (Most brown sugars you see in stores is white sugar with varying amounts of molasses in them!)

You don't want it to be too coarse or the little jagged crystals will cut you!

Find a nice seal-able wide mouth jar to dump them in.  I'm not sure on measurements but it should be a slight caked/pasty texture.   Not too oily and not too dry and crumbly!

Most people recommend using the scrubs right before you get all wet in the shower But I like to get my skin damp and then use them.

Sea salts will pull the toxins right out of your skin (good for acne sufferers or people trying to stop smoking!!!) and the granules will buff the dead skin cells off and promote circulation of the blood to the areas scrubbed and help remove the toxins in your lymph glands as well!

Try not to use it too much in case you scrub yourself raw!  Once or twice a week is good but I have heard of people using them more often.

Another cool thing is to find a few good essential oils and stick them in there!  For around a cup of Sea Salts/Sugar limit about 1-3 drops of each essential oil.  Or if all else fails follow your nose!  My favorite for relaxation is just a basic mix of Rosemary and Lavender oils.  For a more perky uplifting EO synergy (strangly) is mixing Peppermint and Pink Grapefruit oils.

ALWAYS make sure you buy good quiality oils.. I'm not talking about stuff from the mall shops but good reputable EO producers that's organic and unadulterated.  Otherwise you do not get the full benefits, you could have horrible allergic reactions,  and someone is ripping you off hardcore!

A good test to see if you have allergic reactions to anything is to place a drop on a small bandage and stick it to the back of your arm over night/all day and see if it gets irritated or not.

If you want a good lavender make sure it's "high altitude"  from France.  Low altitude lavender is grown differently and has different chemical properties and not that famous "relaxing and healing" property that everyone loves!

For energizing feeling try something with citrus (lemon, tangerine, grapefruit) or maybe mints and tea tree type oils but be careful because citrus' can cause photo sensitivity of the skin (Easy sunburns!) and mints are mucus membrane irritants (So no privates, or in your eyes or nose!)  Tea tree, Eucalyptus, and rosemary are excellent for oily skinned / acne sufferers as they have bacteria killing / astringent properties.

Have fun!

I wonder if epsom salts are as good as sea salt.  I'm thinking about brewing up a batch.

Sea salt and Epsom salts are different chemical compounds and I would try to stick with using Epsom salts for injuries and sore achy joints / muscle type bath soaks and not actually rub it into the skin.

Here's a few links on Wikipedia.org that I have found.  One article seems to need more citations but it's pretty good info anyways!

One of these says that Epsom salts are good at absorbing water in the air (like that Damp Rid stuff you can put in rooms to suck the moisture up and get rid of mildew buildups)  and that salts also help soften hard waters.

Oh you know what I forgot... Here's the method we did for body brushing in the class I took.  First make sure the skin is damp.

We used hot steamy towels that we placed over the client for a bit and before the towels cooled we would pull them back off.  This opens up the pores of the skin.

While the skin is still warm and damp we would apply a small amount of massage oils OR slightly diluted bath soap and massage into the skin.  Then use the brushes, one on each hand, and make quick alternating sweeping motions in sort of a clockwise pattern.  Starting  from the outermost parts of the body, hands/feet, and working towards the center or core of the body.  Brush the skin until it develops a pink hue.  Don't brush too much or it will get raw and irritated.  Sort of follow the circulatory system.  Which makes sense because it helps get the blood going!  It can be used anywhere or on any side of the body, front or back.  And like stated in the posts above, it helps the lymph glands dispose the gunk in them.

After a thorough brushing we would use the warm damp towels again and clean the client's skin off and using a fine misting spray bottle we would gently mist the skin down with a personally made flower water or aroma water with essential oils.  Whatever we used would depend on the person's mental state, physical health, preference and whether they had allergies to something or not.

Sometimes people will go in to see a massage therapist and spa technician about the time they start feeling sick (stuffy heads, sore throats, etc)  Getting a massage and body brushing will clear the sinuses and cleanse the lymph out faster than just sitting at home popping aspirins and drinking fluids.  Side effects may include: having to urinate sooner, getting sicker suddenly and then the cold/flu dissipates faster, some acne breaking out around lymph sites (mostly along throat under the ear / jaw bone)  Other major lymph sides are generally at each joint in the body.  The lymph system of the body is like strings with pea sized glands on them.  When you get sick these glands will swell with the accumulated gunk your body is trying to excrete.  There is more than just going to the restroom to relieve yourself of excess junk in your system!  Exhaling, healthy skin and lymph glands play a major roles in this as well.

Other interesting stories about lymph glands... The black plague! (gross!)

I read a tip for cellulite, at the end of your shower blast freezing cold water on your cellulite, this will improve your circulation, dry yourself and apply some cellulite cream, massaging it into your cellulite, also drink lots of water and herbal teas!
