I'm contemplating purchasing a 90 day workout plan called P90X - I have one friend who has it and really likes it, but I wanted to see if anyone else has tried it or how they feel about it.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks!!

Hey Jen,

Yeah, I've heard of P90X.  I've been debating for a year if I wanted to spend the money but my daughter ordered it last week.  I'm going to give it a try.  She just got it and I have to read over the materials and see how to approach this.

More later.

Hi Jenn,

I'm checking emails from home.  I haven't been sick in over a year.  This is ticking me off.

I read up on the program in the book and read about the nutrition program too.  I also looked at the "Bring It" DVD.  I do have a couple of initial questions for you since you've been on it for a month.

How well did  you do the fitness test?  I've been on my own weight reduction/getting-in-shape program since summer 2007.  I've lost 100 lbs and I'm maintaining fairly well.  The holidays bit me in the butt some but I can get rid of what little I gained.

Were you in pretty good shape before you did the fitness test?  How old are you?  I'm 57 but I can knock out 35 push ups in a set pretty easily.  I can jog 4 miles and I can do an hour on a stationary bike at a good clip.  Last week I went on a 3.5 mile hike.  The first leg was up a mountain (1.7 miles, elevation 1,705 ') and did the acent in 45 min.  I think I'm ready for the fitness test.

Second, regarding the suppliments, did you get the P90X stuff they recommend or did you find alternatives at GNC or such?  I take a men's vitamin daily, Omega 3 capsule and Osteo-Bi-Flex daily.

Third is regarding equipment.  I have some dumbells but I'm going to need more.  Are you using weight, bands or a combination?  My wife gave me a good chip up bar for Christmas.  I do need a chair to do those but I'll get it.

As you can see, I'm pretty driven and I can muster the discipline I need for this but I want to get my arms around everything so I'll have the right mental attitude and preparation.

Thanks, Jenn.  I really appreciate it.

Bert

Hey Bert - sorry you're sick - that really stinks when you're trying to get in to new fitness program!  from the sounds of it, you are absolutely ready for the fitness test and for P90X.  I just suggest you track everything that you do (or don't do) during the test because during each workout you will track the reps/weight etc that you use, so you can see your progress during the program.  I'm 42, I weight 120lbs (125 when I started P90X) and fairly fit - but this is definitely giving me some toned muscles.  I didn't buy any of their supplements, but I have tried the recovery drink and it's fabulous - but it can be pricey.  I use whey protein also and have a shake a couple hours before I work out and sometimes a small one afterwards.  I think the vitamins you are taking should suffice.  As for equipment, you have everything that's needed.  I use dumbbells for most everything and I don't have room for a chin up bar so I use a band but for me it works okay (since I'm a girl I don't really care to have huge lats anyway)  I can really tell I've gained definition in my back already and it's awesome.also, if you're interested, you can go to beachbody dot com and on the right towards the bottom you'll see "message boards" then it will come up with a list of a bunch of different topics and you can pick P90X from there.  Once you're in, there are hundreds of different forums much like this one - I'm really involved in New Team, fine in '09 - the Coach is DocSoc.  He runs the forum but there are several of us there regularly and you can ask questions, we post day one pictures, we log in when we work out, and there are prizes, etc.  some of the people there have been doing P90x for a long time (some on round 2 or 3!) and some of us are new within the month or just yesterday!  it's really awesome.  my screen name is snowmom (some call me snowjenn too).

you definitely sound ready!  our motto is "Push Play" every day (PP for short).  it's a commitment, and some of us fell off during Christmas for a day or two (or three or ten) but we all committed to getting back up and keeping at it.sorry to be so lengthy but one more thing.  the thing about me is that I have always worked out and ate well but I get bored quickly and so I have tons of workout dvd's, etc because i'd do one for awhile then get bored and buy another.  this program is so diverse I have not once thought about quitting.  at work I think about what time i can get home so I can work out!  I know I sound like I work for them or something, be assured I dont!  It's just nice to share something that's really working for me, and sounds like it would be great for you too.  let me know if you have more questions -and jump on over to beachbody and into our forum too!feel better soon!Jennifer

Hi Jenn,

I'm home again today.  This really$*cks.

I appreciate all the great info and I'll get on the BB site too.  I suspect, based on the way I feel, it will be at least a week and a half to two weeks before I begin.  I want to make sure I'm feeling my best.

One other thing; you mention that some folks went off during Christmas.  I was wondering about that.  If someone misses a day or two due to "life getting in the way" does is screw up the program?  Also, if one is having trouble with a particular exercise will it ruin the progression if you repeat a day once or twice?

Sorry for so many questions but I'm really eager to do this.

Thanks,

Bert

Hey Bert - gosh I'm sorry you're so sick.  is it the flu bug, or sinus stuff? stomach flu is going around my area right now (michigan).

as for falling off, I found that different people do different things.  I missed a whole week due to vacation, but I just kept my calendar in tact and started where I would have been when I got home so I could stick to the 90 day plan (however if moving  on to the next phase feels too hard them i'm going to go back and do one more week of phase I).  I also got in 2 or 3 workouts while I was on vacation so I figured as long as I was still moving, i could keep going.  Others extended phase I for one more week to make sure they got in their full three weeks of phase I and then the 4th week is recovery week (not really recovery just a few different workouts that aren't as intense).  I don't think it matters either way.

As for having trouble with any of the exercises, I have trouble with AbRipper X - it really hurts my quads/hip fflexors, but I just do what I can of each move and get stronger as I go along.  A month into the program and I still can't do 25 of all of the moves (if it's a move I can't do I just do something else instead so I'm still working my abs).  I really don't think Tony expects ANYONE to be able to do the whole program, every workout start to finish without any troubles or set backs...otherwise we wouldn't really need the program would we? :)

And during the workouts, Tony is always saying "do your best and forget the rest" - that's a good motto if you ask me!

as far as questions, ask away!  I'm addicted i tell ya!

talk to you soon - feel better.

Thanks again, Jenn.  It's just your every day run of the mill cold but I've had sinus problems all my life and it hits with a vengence.  I have the best boss in the world though, truly.  I sent her an email saying I'm going to try to make it tomorrow.  She told me to make sure I recuped and to stay home and in over the weekend and that they had me covered.  With a boss like that you want to push yourself.  She's the best!

I kinda figured stopping and picking up from where you left off was the way to go.  I also thought it might turn into P110X too.  I'm glad you confirmed this.  You make great points and I'm really excited to get started.

I'll be in touch!

Back at work today.  I bought a set of 20 and 25 lb dumbells yesterday.  I have some lower.  I want to wait until next week before I do the fitness test.  I want to be completely healthy.  I'm going to order some of the recover stuff too.  I'll double up on my daily vitamin and see how things go.

I hope it is addictive because the way I feel today I couldn't do P10X.  I'll keep you posted.  Thanks, Jennifer.

Hey Jenn,

I'm feeling much better.  Thanks for checking on me.

My wife and I were at the beach this past weekend and just got back in last night.  It was cold so no sun bathing but we had a good time anyway.  We try to do this each January, just to get a change of scenery.

I haven't started the X yet but my target start date is next Monday.  I told you about the weights and I bought a fat measurement caliper and I ordered the recovery drink today.  That stuff is $$$$$.  It better help.  I read a lot on the BB forums and it seems several people aren't sure about it or the optimum time to take it.  I'm restructuring my workouts to the evenings after work so I'll be taking it between my workout and dinner.  Some say that's fine, others say if you're having dinner you don't need it.  I don't know what to think but I'llt try it for a month and see what happens.

Since I'm healthy again, I'm back to working out.  I did an hour on the stationary bike Friday and on Saturday, at the place we stayed,  I did a 15 min warm up, 38 regular pushups, several pulldowns with a machine to simulate pullups, 9 military pushups, several pull downs to simulate chin ups, 9 diamond pushups and 15 sit ups.  I thought I was going to get sick but I made it.  I really think I'm ready for the X.  I'm doing my fitness test this weekend.

Say, a quick question on the nutrition plan.  When they say "1 cup oatmeal" for the carb section, I take it that that's uncooked.  Is that correct?  I know that they clarify dry pasta in the book.

I'm gonna do this, Jenn.  Thanks for checking on me and helping me to "Bring it!"

Bert

Hi Bert - glad you're feeling better - now I'm sick!  I've had the flu for 4 days now.  yuck.  I did not order the recovery drink because of it's price but I've heard nothing but good stuff about it helping you recover when taken right after your weightlifting workouts.  It does sound like you're on track to start with the X.  As for the nutrition guide I took it as one cup uncooked as well.  I'll ask someone else on the BB forum I belong to today just to double check though.  I'm following fat-shredder phase 1 portion control just because no one else in myfamily is on the plan so I can't cook from their menu planner - 3 teens and a hubby would have something to say about that I think!

good luck!  let meknow if you have any more questions. I'm in phase 2 week 2 right now but haven't worked out since Sunday so I'm thinking about repeating week 2 again.

talk to you soon!

Hi Jennifer,

I'm so sorry to hear you're sick.  It's no fun at all.  I didn't work out for nearly two weeks when I was sick and it was tough getting back.

I just found out my brother in law and sister in law are doing the X too.  They're in their third week already.  They're not following any of the nutrition program though and this could be a problem for them down the road, particularly when it heats up.

I've registered on the BB forums but haven't written yet.  I'm listed as Not2old.   We'll see about that.

Feel better and take it slow when you get back to it.  Don't have a relapse.

I'll be in touch.

Hi Bert - yes, this flu really sucks.  That's awesome that you found family who are also doing the X.  The nutrition plan is just a guide, I'm not using it to a "Tee" but do the best I can.  I really want this to be a lifestyle change not just a flash in the pan program and I'm pretty sure I can't walk around with that portion approach guide in my back pocket for the rest of my life!  I'm just trying to learn to eat "clean" as they call it, eat more protein to help continue to build muscle as I age and keep my calories in line.

I don't know if I told you before but I'm in the New, Team fine in '09 forum - they're a really great group.  all ages, all locations, all phases of the plan.  just had 3 new people join us this week.

let's keep in touch - also if you want, you can email me directly at jhescott @ selectmedicalcorp.com -  I get notifications when you reply but then I have to log back on here to reply back to you.  have a great day!

Thanks, Jenn.  I'll get on the BB forum too.

I've been watching what I eat and portion size for a year and a half now and the biggest challenge for me will be to up the calorie intake.  I've been doing about 1,300-1,900 a day and working out to lose fat.  I'm going to be at level II for the nutrition program and that's 2,400.  I'll think I've died and gone to heaven. :chewing:

Hi uhoh - yes Bert and I are both really liking P90X - it's a great program.  I'm at about day 75 and Bert is at day 30-ish.  check out the forums on beachbody dot com look for p90x and then our thread is called new team fine in 09.  You can see our success stories, ask questions, etc.  much like this forum.

Hi, uhoh, yeah, P90X is really great but it will really kick your butt.  When they say it's extreme, they mean it.

Be ready to work but as Jenn say, there's a great support family on the P90X site to help you get through.  Today marks my 36th day.  I haven't missed a day yet!  I've also been sore for most of them but it's the good sore.

Let us know if there's anything we can do.

Hey guys!  I haven't tried it yet, but after I come back from spring break I'll buy it.  I think it looks pretty intense and I love things that challenge me.

Is it repetitive, though?  I know Turbo Jam was and I get bored with it very easily.

There are different routines every day but a given week will repeat.  For example, when  you start you'll do:

Day 1-chest and back

Day 2 - Plyometrics

Day 3 - something else (I forget :-))

Day 4 - Yoga

Day 5 - Kenpo Karate

Day 5 - stretch or rest

You'll do these routines for 3 weeks and then the 4th week is "rest" week.  Yeah, right!

The next phase you'll be doing some different things and some familiar.  There's enough of a change each week to keep up the muscle confusion.

Let us know how you make out.
