Oh, Fran, that is so the pits!  All just from a little hurrying up the stairs to get the phone!

Do you feel confident that you have really, really, really good doctors?  Because I do believe that it makes a difference.  You live in a good area for that, I would think, but if you aren't 100% sure, a second opinion with a highly regarded surgeon might be worth it.

I do feel really good with the doctor I have and I have done a lot of research on  the internet and they all say the same thing...full recovery is very unlikely in fact only about 8% if people with my kind of fracture get as much extension/flextion as I have. They put me in the "excellant" catagory. I keep reminding myself of that and try to get over being upset about it but I do not do well with physical limitations...guess I had bette get better becuase the older we get the more we will have...without any injuries.

Boy, I know how you feel.  I don't do well with limitations either!

I am trying a new approach to journaling my calories today.  I have set up some "recipes" on the site I use and I'm going to try to eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch - at least for a few days at a time.  For example, I set up "big salad" and made 3 salads all at once.  Then I entered everything in the salad as  recipe so now tomorrow and the next day, instead of putting all those things in, I can just list "big salad".  I really hope this helps; I struggle with this as you know!

Anne, that's great!  I do that too.  Once you get a particular meal in play and you know what your calorie count is, all you have to do is list the meal!!!

Way to to!

Well, I thought it was worth a try.  I am not much of a repeat eater - I pretty much just look in the frig for what is available.  But the tracking is driving me nuts!  Like a salad has about 12 things in it (I make good salads).

I have not gotten to the point of doing a whole meal but I do know that is an option.  I'll try this first and see how it goes.

What do you do with meals, Bert?  Do you have an entire meal listed - chicken, broccoli, salad, sweet potato and just repeat the whole thing?

Good morning guys.

Anne, I think creating some meals and knowing the calories is a good idea. I use an online tracker and since I have been using the same one for 3 years I have tons of meals set up in there. Also I don't sweat slight differences. If I have ham in a salad instead of turkey and maybe add tomatos I just use the salad with turkey I already have entered. Now if I am going to start makings substantial changes, say add cheese then I do a new recipe and add it. At first it is a pain but in time you get so much built up it really isn't hard.

Ate well yesterday, made my crustless quiche this time I added cheese (you might remember I made it a couple of weeks ago and somehow forgot to add the cheese ). No exercise as this was a day I do weights. Maybe a walk later depending on my schedule. Meeting a friend for supper and plan to stay strong. I will order soup and salad if they have it.

Have a good say Spicers.

Hi gals,

Feeling a bit better but didn't exercise again.  I ate well until last night but I don't think I went too far off my calories.  Just not good ones.  Today is another day and it's starting out well.

Anne, yes, I'll do that with a meal.  I do repeat a lot though and if you're going to do a calorie count by the meal, it's good to build up a good collection.

I think Fran is right about not sweating the little changes, especially if it's veggies.  Overall I try to allow for a 10% screw up on my overall count so I know I'm covered.

Have a great day, gals.

Morning, Spices

I was down 2.2 lbs on the scale this morning after being stuck for about 4 days.  The timing was good with my tracking yesterday - made me feel like it was really worth it even though I know it was an accumulation of things.

My freezer is overflowing with food and I am trying to use the stuff in it.  Among the piles was a tuna steak and a piece of cod.  I am not a huge fish fan when I fix it but I do like salmon loaf (I don't like salmon by itself) so I got the bright idea to use the tuna and cod in a fish loaf.  I spent a fair amount of time on it but didn't care for it.  In my infinite wisdom, I made enough for three meals.  Oh boy.  I also made eggplant and that didn't turn out great either, although I think I can salvage that.  It is frustrating to me to spend time cooking and then be disappointed, especially when you are limiting calories so you can't just go get something else instead.  Oh well, I survived.

Anyway, this was making me think that maybe we should share some recipes.  On myfitnesspal.com, there is a way to do that, although I never have.  Or we could just use e-mail.  Fran, that crustless quiche sounds very interesting...

I hope you both have a strong day!

Good morning guys.

Went ou to eat with a friend last night but I did well, I ordered split pea soup and a 1/2 salad. I use very little dressing so the total was pretty good even though the salad had walnuts, cheese and chicken in it. I even held strong when my friend orderd a child sundae and even stronger when they accidently made a full size and she wanted to share it with me. It did point out to me the importance of us being firm....she didn't send the sundae back or ask them to cut it in half (which I would have done) and in the end she ate it all and really didn't want to. I understand, it was there.

Tonight is soup and sandwich night at our house. We started that a few years ago and it is still one of my favorites. Easy, low calorie and tasty.

Have a great day and stay strong.

Hi gals,

I did well on the eats yesterday.  I'm still feeling kind of puny though so I haven't worked out.  It's been a week and it's pi$$ing me off because I was on a roll.  I'll have to get it back but I want to make sure I'm ready and not bring on a relapse.

Fran, do you always make your own soup or do you buy it?  We get Progresso Light soups.  Depending on what you get, calories are 120 or 160 for an entire can.  They're pretty good.

Stay strong, gals.

I'll answer your question, Bert, instead of Fran.  I always make my own soups - or almost always.  I do have some light progresso soups in case I get desperate and I also keep tomato soup on hand because if I am ever sick, that is typically one thing that I like to eat.  Soups are generally so easy to make (and good ways to use whatever happens to be in the frig) that I like to do my own.  One of my secrets is Coyote Country Seasoning, a soup base mix that I buy.  It is not as healthy as starting from scratch where you can control every ingredient but it does turn making soup into a 20 minute project.  They have alot of different mixes, they are flavorful and they are typically low in calories and fat.  Depending on the mix, I add things like chicken, tomatoes, onions, corn, etc.  Their website is http://www.coyotecounty.com  I have not ordered from there before; I pick mine up in the summertime when they sell at the local arts & crafts show.

Fran, you have mentioned split pea soup a few times - one of my favorites - and I do that one from scratch whenever I have a ham bone (one in the freezer right now). When I am trying to lose weight though, it is not wise for me to go there.  I love it though!

Had another dud dinner last night.  Made stuffed peppers and instead of using my own "recipe", got one online.  I thought I'd try something a little different and the reviews of the recipe were great.  Sometimes I wonder what people are used to eating; mine are sooo much better.

Yesterday I struggled with the calories; I was just really hungry.  I ended up being over by 215 calories.  I got on the treadmill at 7pm and walked for an hour so I could have them too!  I hope I have an easier time today and don't feel so hungry / headachy.

I have lost almost 6 lbs since coming home from the cruise and I can tell a little difference - my pants are not quite so tight in the waist.

Sorry for being so blabby this morning - you guys have a good day!

Bert, I do both, but tonight it's Progresso Light. I do watch at the store though becuase, at least at mine, they charge a lot more for the Light soups so I always compare. For instances, I just don't think the Light vegetabe is worth the cost so we buy Progesso regular.

Anne, I checked that website out and I think I will be ordering something. As for the split pea soup no one in my house eats it but me so when I can get it when I'm out I fugure that's great, it is worse than a lot of other soups but still not that bad. I get to have a cup and that's all there is . As for bieng over 215 calories, as long as it's not a trend no biggy. especially since you made up for it on the treadmill.

Talk about being stuck...for 4 days now my weight has not changed even 1/10 I don't think I have ever had that happen. I even put something on it to check it but it seems to be working fine. Really, not up or down one smidge...weird for me who sees 2 pound jumps in either direction on a regular basis.

Good morning guys.
Anne, can you give me a copy of that recipe...someday I might make it. It's funny you say that becuase my favorite aunt used to make split pea and ham soup. One of my fondest memories was sharing a big pot of split pea soup with my Aunt Winnie. Even when she was so arthritic she could barely hold a spoon she insisted on making it when ever I came...I suspect it was a special time for her too. OK, now I'm missing her.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it but I was kind of bumming becuase my weight stayed the same for 4 straight days...I mean to the tenth...well in the catagory of be careful what you wish for...it moved today..up!

Hae a great weekend and stay strong.

Hi gals,

Spot on with the food yesterday but still not feeling up to working out.  I think rest this weekend and then hit it again Monday regardless.

Love Split Pea soup.  M.E. makes a great one.

We're going out with my mother in law for dinner tonight and I think I'll have a salad with grilled scallops and shrimp.  Vinagrette dressing and olives.  Should be good.  I may even have a glass of wine.

Have a great day and great weekend, gals.  Stay strong.  Monday is my weigh in day so I'll report the weeks progress then.

Morning, Spices!  Sorry I was awol yesterday - I had one of my mega shopping days in the "big city".  Then when I got home I had 45 minutes to get a dish ready and get dressed for going to a pot luck.

I did very well in the first part of the day.  Ate breakfast before leaving, stopped to have a salad for lunch. But I went over at dinner, darn it.  And then today I started out wrong. Well, all I can do is get ahold of myself and not ruin the entire day.

I'll send you my "recipe", Fran, for pea soup.  It's so easy!

HI guys, early meeting on Monday so thought I'd stop in tonight.

My weekend was not great as far as food goes, basically overate the whole weekend., I even dug a Mounds bar out of the back of the freezer, it's been there for weeks but it got me this weekend, as well as some cheese and crackers and that is in addition to my  meals. Well hopefully that is out of my system.

Anne, thank you for the soup recipe, I will definitely give it a try when I have someone around to share it with. Maybe when my niece comes over.

Well hope you both had a nice weekend and we're off to another week. Let's make it a good one for all of us. Onward and downward for the Spicers.

Hi gals,

Weighed in this AM but no loss.  I'm not really surprised as I didn't work out all last week due to illness and Saturday we had my cousin over for dinner and went a little overboard.  No gain though so this week is a new week.

Have a great day!

Oh, boy, this was a disappointing weekend!  I gained the two pounds back I just lost last week!  Yesterday I got on it and did well the whole day until just before bed when I started snacking.  I didn't eat anything terrible but you know what a problem that is with me - grazing.  So I was really hoping that I could take it back off quickly and it didn't work at all.

But I am back again today and I have to do it.  This is what is going to make it or break it for me long term because I am convinced that the key to maintenance is jumping on those small gains so they don't become big ones.  I cannot be sitting here two weeks from now still working on those same two pounds!

Let's stay strong, Spices!

Well, as they say...I can throw in the towel or use it to wipe the sweat off my face...I'd better get wiping .

Mornin' gals,

OK, I got a good night's sleep last night and I feel so much better.  Ate right yesterday and today.  I just hope I have the energy to workout tonight.  It's coming up on two weeks since I've done anything just because of this cold and the aftermath.

Fran, get right back up on that horse!  Anne, don't get down.  We can do this.  We've done it before.  We know it's a life long battle for us so while we want to get to a certain weight, we shouldn't look as that as being the end.  Let's continue to stay strong!

Yesterday was a good day and starting out today well also.  I've got my workout in but haven't had breakfast yet.

You can do it, Fran - we are bigger than this!  One step at a time wins the race!

I have just started varying my workout routines - maybe I already told you this.  Every other day I am doing the cross trainer and treadmill, then on the other days I am doing weights and stretching.  We'll see how it goes.

Hi gals,

I ate more calories than I intended to yesterday but, other than the two bourbons, they were good calories and still on the high end of my range.

Today is starting well and I'm sure I'll be fine.  Not weighing in until Monday so I still have time.  Heck, this is a life change so all I have is time.

Oh, my, it's Thursday already.  I have been avoiding typing because my wrist is acting up and I need to save it for work.

I don't know if I told you, but we are going on a snow shoe adventure next week to a cabin high in the mountains with 4 other couples.  It will be a great time but the FOOD - that will be hard.  If we were packing out own stuff, it would be a piece of cake but we hired a guy to lug everything in on a snow cat.  I'm sure you get the picture.  I'd like to say I am going to be good but I know I am only so strong.  We are all bringing meals, I'll be eating what other people make and I know it's not going to be what I make at home.  Plus it ain't a restaurant where I can order a salad.

Anyway, I'll be gone Monday - Thursday.  Yes, I will be trying to snow shoe my little butt off to help as much as possible.  but I also like to sit inside by the fire...  with a book... with some hot chocolate...  maybe a cookie?

Good morning guys.

Anne, that trip sounds fantastic...boy I can't wait to retire so I will have time to do that kind of stuff....but as it gets closer I am soooo worried about the $$$. Let's face it once I retire there is no going back.

I say have a great time, enjoy the food, maybe watch the portions where you can and just have a good time with your friends. This is about a lifestyle change so you know these things are going to happen and you can't be so strict with yourself you ruin your weekend but you also don't want to come home all mad at yourself for going nuts. We do what we can, that's all we can do. BTW, are you getting hit by that monster storm I heard about hitting Denver? I know you are in the mountains but I don't know if you get the same storms. You are so lucky...there is no snowshoeing here this winter...we got a good sized storm in October and that was it. None on the horizon and any that come after mid February only last a few days..guess I wait until next winter.

Have a great weekend both of you.

Hi gals,

I did ok yesterday on the eats until I went home.  I need to focus more on that.

Anne, how's the snow out there?  I think you're more SW of Denver, right?

Fran, I'm with you.  When I retire I don't want to go back.

Have a good weekend, gals.

We got a little snow last night but not much; today there is a chance of snow as well but no big accumulation in the forecast.  I'm sure at 11,000 ft, where we are going, there will be more!  It'll be nice to have the fresh snow.

Thinking about retirement, are you guys?  As you know, I don't work too many hours so I am sort of in between.  You never really know if you are going to have enough money, I guess.  Even those Monte Carlo scenarios they run - nothing is a guarantee.  I just try to tell myself that whatever the situation, I'll just have to find a way to survive.  Not that I would be happy about losing everything - not even close.  But I guess we do what we have to do.

Hi gals,

Fran, I feel your pain with regard to the eats.  Ate a lot.  I think I'm going to change my weigh in day to Friday morning.  I do great in the week but have a tendency to go off on the weekends and it affects my monday morning weight.

On the other hand, Eli and the boys won so it wasn't a total loss of a weekend.

Hi gals,

Ate well yesterday but that's all I can say.  Tough day yesterday.  A friend and colleague at the college passed away suddenly on Friday and the funeral was yesterday.  We went to our tax guy and between the feds and state we owe well over $1K.  Also, my daughter's dog jumped up on our new leather couch and scratched the heck out of it.  M.E. was livid and the dog has been banned from the house.  She even threw out the dog biscuits we had.

My daughter will pay for the repair but overall, yesterday $ucked.

Today is a new day, however, and a day that the Lord has made.  Let us be glad and rejoice in it.

Have a great day!

Oh Bert, you and ME did have a bad day yesterday. I can only imagine how upset she is about the couch. Even though I am sure it can be repaired it is never the same, even if it's perfect.

We did our taxes yesterday and we have a refund coming but that only  means we paid too much during the year and let the governement use our money so really your way is better but it still stinks when you have to write that check. I was suprised to learn that the US actually has one of the lower tax rates....guess that's a good thing.

Gpod morning.

As you can see it not even 5 am and I am on the computer. That's becuase I have been up since 1 am. That's the second time this week I couldn't sleep.. I hate that, it is so frustrating I know I am going to be tired all day now.

Hi gals,

Frustrating yesterday.  Ate well until dinner.  Pizza, a bourbon and a beer.  No excuse.  Just late getting to dinner.

Today is another day.

Good monring buddies. Anne where are you?? Did you tell us and I forgot? We miss you girl.

I just wanted to say hi and let you know I will be gone for a few days. My sugery is on Monday and then for at least a week any typing will have to be one handed so I won't be doing much of that.

Have a great week and I will be checking in on you guys even if I can't participate .

I came back on becuase now that you sent the pictures I remembered you were going snowshoeing...what a bad memory I have sometimes.

Morning, Spices

Yep, we are back from our little snow adventure.  I was busy at work yesterday trying to get things caught up and so sorry I am late getting back on.  It sounds like you both had some interesting challenges this past week.  Bert, I am sorry about the dog incident; that would really set me off too!

Fran, I hope your surgery goes really well - I'm sorry you have to have it though!  I'll be thinking about you!

The good news is that I didn't gain any weight at the cabin.  The bad news is I didn't lose any either.  Just have to get back on it.  I am tired for some reason - I guess all that fresh air and mounds of snow!

Have a good weekend.

Hi gals,

Bad weekend.  I really didn't watch what I ate and no exercise.  No excuses either.  Next weekend we're headed to the mountains with some of our friends.  I don't expect that to be good either.

I'll do what I can.

Have a great day!

Wow, the weekend seemed so short!  This will be a busy week too.  I am committed to making a downward trend on the weight this week even though I didn't start our too well this am.  I experimented with freezing pancake batter around New Years.  I had made pancakes when we had company (buttermilk banana walnut), had extra batter and froze it.  That would be fine except my freezer is so ridiculously full. Every time I open it, something falls out.  So I am trying to eat things out of there and you guessed it, the pancakes came out.  So I made them this am.  They are not horrible, but not my usual skinny omlet either.  They were very good, by the way.  I am not a huge pancake fan in general but people seem to love my pancakes.  I must admit, they are so much better than what I have had other places.

Be good Spices.  Let's all have a good week!

It looks like you guys are busy celebrating Valentine's Day or something.

I started out the day with a new approach. Rather than writing things down as I eat them, I decided to write down what I would eat and then follow the plan.  Great concept but I was off the plan before noon.  It was stress eating, the worst kind.

I hope you both have a good day.

Hi, Spices

We are going away for a long ski weekend with the grandkids - and Ray's daughters.  We aren't going to ski (Ray's arm) but the kids are going to take lessons.  Anyway, just wanted to check in before we leave tomorrow am.

I wish I was more excited about going.  I am not very excited about packing.

Have a good holiday weekend!
