Mornin' Fran,
Yeah, we have Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme. I try to stay away from both of them. If I'm there it's not for a breakfast sandwich. I personally love the chocolate frosted donuts filled with custard.
Eating out can be a challenge. I really try to eat what I know will be low cal and healthy and I'll make small requests to ensure there's not any butter or whatever, that jacks up the calories. I've been doing well so far but then there are other times when I'll just eat what I want and enjoy the decadence. That's life.
Mary Ellen and I are headed up to Virginia this weekend to visit a pal of mine. We've been buddies for 40 years! Hard to imagine. I'm sure we'll be watching what we eat and drink the entire weekend (Dang! Was that just lightning I saw???).
Ooops page turn
Have a great day, Mocha Spice.
Bert

Good Morining Bert, aren't you worried Mary Ellen might find out about those two beautiful women ?
Sounds like you will have a good time, I know what you mean about having buddies for so long, my best friend and I have been friends for over 50 years....I love the fact that I have a friend for that long...I hate the fact that I'm old enough to .
Frank and I are going to a PawSox game this weekend, they are the Red Sox AAA farm team, can't get tickets to a Red Sox game unless you're willing to pay $200 plus for a $40 ticket. Oh well, Red Sox AAA is still better than any other baseball game, long live Red Sox Nation . Actually when I was in Colorado I took in a couple of games, it was fun and I could not believe it....you just walk up and get tickets at the window...unheard of. NC doesn't have a team...do they? I don't think they do but for some reason I am thinking a team in light blue uniforms? Maybe I'm thinking of some other team. Summer without baseball...just couldn't do it.

Mornin' Fran,
Actually, Mary Ellen took that photo. It was a year ago January at a party. The blonde was my boss' boss and the brunette was our director of marketing. The blonde is now a dean at one of our campuses and the brunette has gone on to another college. It was a great party.
Yeah, I know what you mean about being old enough to have friends that old! I'm not any older though, I'm just grayer, fatter, moving more slowly and forgetting why I went into a room. HOLY $HIT!!! I am old!!!!!
We have a AAA team here and I think they're the minor league for the White Soxs but I'm not sure. I really don't follow them.
I hope we do get to go this weekend. Mary Ellen's dad was just admitted to the hospital late yesterday afternoon. It seems he's bleeding internally somewhere. He's had ulcers before and they'll test this morning to see if they've started again. Please keep him in your prayers.
Have a great day Fran and enjoy your game!
Bert

Sorry to hear about Mary Ellens dad...boy it seems we no sooner get our kids raised then we are dealing with parent issues .
I hope you're weekend works out, talk to you next week.
BTW....we are finally suppose to get some sunshine today...we are currently on track for the least amount of sunshine for June since 1903, it has been a horrible month here, very depressing to have no sunshine. I don't know how people live in areas like Seattle. I need sun...I don't like the heat but I need the sun .

Hey Bert, how's it going? Were you able to get away for the weekend as you had hoped?
Frank and I went to the baseball game, we had a nice time but of course the weather wasn't very good. I do not remember ever having so little sun in June, it's not that we're even getting a lot of beneficial rain, it is just drizzle every day .
I got a good walk in on Saturday with my friends, just a 5 mile walk but it felt good to get walking again. Today I am going to hit the weights at the gym and hopefully get some of the dang push ups in.
Have a great day.
Do you know when Anne is back?

Hi Fran,
Happy Monday!! We had a good time. It was good to see my buddy but I'm really concerned about him. He's about 350 lbs, his eating habits are terrible, high blood pressure, acid reflux, etc. When he goes up or down stairs he has to take them one at a time due to pain in his ankles and back. I'm really worried about him but he won't make any changes in his life. I don't want to come off as being preachy either. I wish I knew how to help him.
Starting training block 3 this week for my second round of the X this week. Getting in the right frame of mind after laying off this weekend.
No sun is a bummer. I hope you get some soon. I remember when we lived in Pittsburgh that there was little or no sun at all in the winter. We bowled and drank a lot.
I don't remember when Anne is due back. I know she was gone at least for last week but I don't know if she was taking a week and a half or what. I'm sure she's having a blast.
Any plans for the 4th of July weekend? I got cornered into going to a friends house and I really don't want to go. Mary Ellen accepted the invite. She's a good friend but her folks will be there and they're dear people too but her mom has Alzheimers, her dad is half deaf and there will be two other guys there too. Old guys too.
I don't want to seem like I'm coming down on old folks but between the issues with my mom and Mary Ellen's folks, I'd like to be in a setting where there's some life! I know, it's selfish of me but that's the way I feel.
Have a great day!!
Bert

Hi Bert. Sorry you're 4th plans don't sound like a lot of fun but I know you....you will end up making lemonaid out of those lemons and have a good time. I know those old folks aren't a lot of fun. I had 2 elderly aunts who lived near us for years but then moved to Alabama (odd story) any way I felt obligated to go visit every year for 4 or 5 days and I can tell you I felt it was sheer torture but they were my aunts who had helped raise me so I did it every year for 5 years. They have both since passed away and I would gladly sit through those boring conversations I had heard a million times if I could just hug them both again. I guess it's just human nature, we don't know what we've got till it gone . So I sympathize and envy you at the same time.
Yesterday I had a horrible day, first I drove an hour and a half in the rain for a meeting and the other person didn't show . So then I get to drive back home (I work from my house) and my computer crashes and I mean like totally. Now they tell me it is toast and they are going to try and recover my hard drive but other than that it's shot. So basically right now I can do nothing which doesn't stop the work from coming in but basically I am either on the road on working on the computer and this week I had tons of computer work scheduled...grrrrr. They were abel to give me some access but it is like working in 2009 with 1989 technology----what I can do is very slow and there is lots I just can't do. I am getting farther behind (and I was already buried with work this month) and I am really getting stressed which sends me into an eating binge and to top it off it makes me so mad I don't want to exercise. For the past 2 weeks I have been gaining and it's becuase I am eating out of control, I need to stop. I know this is life and I just need to deal with it but easier said than done sometimes. I am really going to try and force myself to the gym today.
Sorry for going off all about my bad day, I know everyone has them.
As for the 4th, I have my nieces coming and bringing my two nephews, ages 3 and 5. On Friday we're going to a downtown "block party" lots of stuff for the kids and then there are fireworks at night. On Saturday we're going to the a near by state park, great swimming area for the kids and shade for me (of course that is assuming we ever get any sun, they have promised us some but we'll see) and we're doing a picnic at the park.
I will be pooped and ready to do nothing by Sunday when they head home.

Mornin' Fran.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm going to be old one day and no one will want to be around me either. It is life but I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll be alone a good bit of the time when I'm old and that my kids and grand kids will be living their lives. I'll see them periodically but they'll be on the move. I guess one of the things I've come to realize though, is that by getting in the best possible shape I can get in now, I won't be as feable or weak in my later years as so many other folks are. Getting old is inevitable. Getting decrepit isn't. Maybe if I'm in great shape in my 70's (as good as I can be) I'll be able to keep up with the younger folks and they won't dread gramps coming around. They may even think I'm fun.
Sorry to hear about your computer. That is a bummer. I understand about the stress and the eating that comes with it. I ate like it was going out of style this past weekend and I wasn't under any stress. No excuses for me. You know, you may just want to bite the bullet and buy a new computer right away. This way you'll be back in 2009 technology but more importantly, you can alleviate some of that stress.
We may be able to salvage some of the weekend. As it turns out, my daughter's friend is having a party later. She's Cuban and her folks are coming from New York. She told Sheila to invite us but she wanted to warn us that when her family meets for a party the booze flows and the jokes get raunchy and she didn't want us to be offended. She doesn't know me very well at all. We'll see what develops.
Have a great day, Fran.
I loves 'ya!

Hey Bert, thought I'd come on tonight because tomorrow I have to go into Boston to pick up my computer, not sure if they have repaired it or if they are replacing it, it is my companies computer, not my own so it's their call. I did replace my own computer a few months back, I got a Dell laptop and I love it. Of course I still don't get emails when you guys post but I've given up on that one.
You are so right about keeping in good shape, it makes a huge difference. One of my good friends is 78 and you would never know it. He still hikes and is very active in the art world, still enters art competitions and wins more than his share. He has slowed down but he is still very active and he puts most 78 year olds to shame. From the short time I've known you I am pretty sure you are going to be like him, probably even better. He always exercised but nothing like you so it bodes well for you.
I am over my pity party from earlier today and I actually went to the gym and took two, classes. I took a one hour Zumba class just for fun then I did a power hour which is the one that is a real workout.
I have to tell you, I got some ginger carrots from Trader Joe's...easy and absolutely delicious. If you get a chance give 'em a try some time.

Hi Fran,
Yeah, I want to ge in good shape when I hit my 70's and beyond. I was watching Dr. Oz last night and based on his research and what he preaches, I seem to be doing the right things to have a healthy and long life. God is good.
I really hit the exercise last night. I had my rest and recovery week last week and when you get back to it, it really kicks your butt but it was worth it. I was so sore last night after a series of pushups and pull ups. I'm actually able to do 2 pull ups unassisted (with my foot on a chair). When I started I couldn't do one. Progress slow but sure. I really have to zero in on what to do with my calories though. I'm not shedding the fat around my middle as quickly as I would like. I do notice more definition in my quads and my butt is considerably smaller too so I guess it will come in time.
Glad you got out and did the two classes. I've found that exercise can really help me out of the blues.
When you get this you'll most likely be in Boston or back from there. I'll be in the office tomorrow but out from Friday through Sunday. Let's check in with each other tomorrow.
Anne must be having a ball. I'm envious.
See 'ya,
Bert

Hi Bert, are you ready to enjoy the 4th? The party with your friends parents sounds like fun, maybe some good Cuban music and of course some great Cuban food...gotta have food right .
The weather continues to stink major around here so I'm not sure, we may end up taking the boys to the science musuem or some other inside activity. They are saying the day might be nice with showers in the afternoon but that is what they said about today and should I tell you about the torrential downpour we're having. Honestly, I wish I could send you some of this rain. The worse part is half the time it isn't even raining, it's just hot and humid and no sun. Oh well, all weather patterns break eventually and we will have a good time no matter what.
I won't get to the gym today but maybe I can do one of my tapes. I do plan on going at least once or twice over the week end. We did the weight class last night, boy are those hard, but I always feel good about it after I do it so I'm glad we went.
Well have a great 4th and I'll talk to you when you get back.

Hi Fran,
I feel your weather pain. I can take all the heat but the humidity sucks! And what it does to my hair is a crime. Believe me, we get it too but I'm glad it's not too bad for this weekend.
I went home last night with the intention of doing my Plyometrics workout but when I got home my daughter was in tears about her day, her debts, her job, etc. She said she was going to have a drink. I said "Forget the drink, let's work out." She reluctently agreed so instead of doing Plyo (it's very intense) we did a less strenuous cardio X workout. Still worked up a good sweat and got my heart rate up. I did have a couple of glasses of wine with dinner though.
I had set the alarm for 4:45 this morning to get up and do my ab work but I was too tired and sore from my workout the day before yesterday. I have to work on shoulders, biceps and triceps tonight so I'll do the abs after. Never quit!!!!
Have fun with the kids. Spoil the heck out of them. I'm off tomorrow for the long weekend so I'll get caught up with you Monday. Maybe we'll hear from our MIA Spice. She must be having a ball. I can't wait to see the pics.
Have a good one!!
Bert

Hello, Fran and Bert!!
Long time no see!! I wish you guys could have gone with us! The trip was really a great experience. For me, it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime things of awesome beauty and exciting adventure. We had a range of weather from driving rain one afternoon while rafting (felt like hail) to 110 degrees and intense sun. The water is COLD and so the hot actually feels good when you are on the water. I think I was totally wet 95% of our awake hours, whether that was on the raft or under a waterfall in a side canyon. I earned the name of "Water Wonderwoman".
We took side trips every day, mostly to waterfalls or water features of some sort. My favorite was a place called Havasu (named for the Havasupai Indians). The water is intense, clear aqua blue from a high calcium carbonate concentration. These minerals form travertine pools and waterfalls - unbelievably gorgeous. The water in the side canyons is much warmer too so we were able to sit in the water withour freezing our behinds off!
One of the most fun things was cliff jumping into the river. I think we were probably only 15-20 feet above the water but when you look over the side into the fast flowing river, it looks like much more than that. The adrenalin must be pumping too because that was the only time the water did not feel cold.
Of course, the rapids through the Grand Canyon are legendary and being at the front of the raft while plunging into a wall of water is so exciting. I thought that I would have to share the front seat but instead I got to ride there the whole time. I learned that there are front riders and back riders and both types think that they have the best seat. I knew I had the best seat but don't tell anyone.
Sleeping on the sand under the stars was also fun. I think it was quite uncomfortable but I was totally unaware of this until I woke up in the morning. I slept so soundly!
The guides were great and I never knew camp cooking could be so good. I know I was not active enough to burn off the calories and I can feel that I gained weight. But I decided to wait about a week to check on the damage. I don't want to be totally depressed!
We don't have many pictures, unfortunately. Ray dropped the camera in one of the side streams while we were hiking and the camera was ruined. We are going to try to get some from other people and also we might be able to salvage the ones that were taken prior to the water incident.
Both of us are bushed now. I don't know if we are tired from the trip or from the drive back from Las Vegas. Either way, it is time for bed!
I hope you both had a good 4th! Fran, the weather has been weird all over. I know what you are going through with all that rain. Maybe July will be better.
Sorry to go on for so long! I missed you both!

Anne, it's great to have you back, we did miss you. Your trip sounds absolutley wonderful. The waterfalls sound truly amazing, it really does sound like something I would want to do at least once in this lifetime. The waterfalls sound especially thrilling, standing under them must have been awesome! I hope you are able to recapture some of your pictures, they will be such great memories for you....and we want to see them too .
I don't think you need to give a singel though to any weight issues, you are wise to give it a week and if you gained so what....a trip like this doesn't happen every week, or even every year I am glad you enjoyed it so much.
In Massachusetts the sun fianally decided to make an appearance, so we had a great weekend, I ate way to much but I will get back on track today. We had my neices and thier two boys visiting for a couple days, we took them to one of the state parks and had a nice time, they swam...we watched and ate, at least I did go on a couple "nature" walks with the boys, but that's pretty much it.

Hello Anne (and Fran too ),
WOW!!!! What a trip!!! We were both thinking of you and Ray and I'm so glad you had a great time and are safely home.
Fran is right. Don't give a thought to what you ate on vacation. You were on VACATION!! You'll get back on the horse today.
I was pretty good over the long weekend. On Friday I did my ab work but during the last move I tweaked my back again so I stopped immediately. After resting a bit I began yoga but my back hurt a half hour into it so I stopped. Saturday I did a 5 mile run and felt good. Sunday I did an hour of stretching and still felt good. I did my abs this morning and left out the last move so I think I'm good to go.
The only time I really went off the eating plan was at my friend's home Saturday afternoon. No biggie since I had the 5 miles under my belt that day. So far so good.
Again, I'm so glad your trip was great. I'm going to forward your info to Mary Ellen so we can both live vicariously through you.
Have a great day!

Good morning, Spices,
I am feeling MUCH better today after 9+ hours in bed! I really needed the sleep. Hey, Bert, did you notice that I got your name right on my post last night? Only partly brain dead, I guess.
Sounds like you both had a good weekend. Fran, you must be the favorite aunt - and great aunt! How far away do they live from you? It sounds like you get to see them fairly often. I'm glad the sun came out for you too!
Bert, I think you are very smart to back off when you notice something that does not feel right in your exercise. I have not had a back problem (knock on wood) but from watching Ray, they look horrible to me. Much better to avoid it rather than forge ahead and then be down for a month.
Since you mentioned the waterfalls, Fran, I will say that they really were spectacular. Water like that in the desert is really amazing to see and I swam in more falls on this trip than I have in Hawaii. The biggest one that we swam in was a 90' falls and it was so big that the current coming out from it was too strong to be able to get directly under the falls. It was fun to try, however.
Bert, I will send you the name of the company we rafted with. They have a nice advertising book that you may want to send for. I highly recommend the trip!

Good morning Spice Buddies.
Anne, yup....I think I am the favorite aunt....I work at it . My nephews live just under 2 hours away, we see them about every 6 weeks or so. They don't have a lot of family near by so we're pretty much it. They have a grandfather in Virginia but they only see him once a year and a grandmother who lives close by but is is poor health so although they visit her often it isn't quite the same. I was fortunate enough to have been raised by an extended family and I think it is so important for children to have that. I think it is one of the things we are loosing as people move around more and more. I just know the security I always felt and it was truly amazing given the circumstances, we lived on the edge and most of my friends were really adrift in life but I always had a family to anchor me....anchored my butt a few times to I can tell you . Anyway for those reasons I have really made a point of being in the boys lives. My grandchildren live too far away to spoil often so I guess it's the nephews I get to spoil . Anyway more info than you asked for.
Yesterday I went to the gym twice--once was a stretch and tone class, not too hard but it feels good, the other was a weight class--I'm always sore after those but I think building muscle is helping me with the weight and I actually feel a little stronger, especially in my arms and shoulders....still can't do a single push up but I'm working on it.
Have a great day guys.

Mornin' gals,
Fran, spoil the heII out of the boys.
Glad you did weights the other day. You're right, it's the good kind of sore. I did my abs yesterday morning and worked on shoulders, chest and triceps last night. I actually did 10 one handed pushups but I had to do them on my knees. I'm fine with that though as I started out doing regular pushups on my knees and I've worked up to many on my toes. It just takes time.
Anne, I hope you got caught up on your sleep.
Have a great day Spicys.

Hi, Spices,
Well, it ain't morning! Sorry I am so late; had to get up early for an appt and then did grocery shopping and errands most of the day. Tonight I am going to try to work on some pictures. I was able to download from the camera. The shots are not great but I'll see what can be salvaged.
Fran, I feel totally stupid but for some reason I didn't think you had any kids - or grandkids. I wonder where I got that idea. Maybe because you talk about your nephews more since they are around more. Anyway, I feel badly that I missed that important point. So where are they, how old are they and how many (kids and grandkids)?
If I get some photos together, I'll send some your way!

Good morning guys.
Anne, don't feel badly, you are right, I don't see my grandchildren very often, actaully they are my step daughters children. I raised her but we are not that close, no anomosity, just not close They live out in Colorado....neighbors of yours....sort of. They live in Colorado Springs. She went to Colorado with the air force and fell in love with it. Then fell in love with her husband and that was were she settled. So anyway, I have 2 grandchildren, Rachael is 15 and Scott is 13. I see them once a year or so, it depends.
I have to tell you guys, I am working on cleaning out my freezer by using up things and I am having some tough challenges getting health meals together. Today we are having a Chiken Tettrazini...basically loaded with fat and calories but I have decided to pick up a piece of salmon and make a salad with it. That way I won't eat to much of the fattening stuff and if we only eat half of it, I won't feel bad, the rest I can toss. I just can't toss the whole thing.
Well have a good day guys.

Mornin' gals,
Well, I went out last night with a couple of guys. Lots of beer. Not much more to say about that, other than the fact that I could crawl right up on my desk right now and go to sleep.
I have to rally as we have a team meeting at 9:00 this morning and I don't want to be yawning at my boss. Need to cowboy up.
Have a great day, spicy ones.

Good morning, Spice Babes, (it is still morning here),
Fran, now I do remember about your grandchildren in CS. I guess what I got wrong for some reason is that they are grandchildren. For some reason, I thought they were your great niece and nephew. I remember the last time they were at your house you were trying to think of things to entertain teenagers with - right? It doesn't seem like it was that long ago. So this must be Frank's daughter? Is he close to her? Does he have any other children?
I think you know that my grandkids are also through Ray's daughter (he also has another daughter with no kids). I did not participate in any of the upbringing like you did but I get along well with both of his girls. Actually, I think I get along better with the one who has the kids now because I think she sees how much I love them. And they don't know that I am not a bona fide nana. By the time they figure that all out, I doubt if they will care.
Well, you really must plan a trip to Colorado to kill two birds with one stone. I know I've said that before but since I am over 50 now, it's to be expected.
Bert, is there somewhere you can hide at work to nap? Like maybe under your desk instead of on top of it? Do you remember the Seinfeld episode where George started living under his desk at work? You could do something like that. I loved Seinfeld!
I got to see what Maker's Mark was while in the Grand Canyon. They had a liquor closet on board (everyone brought their own) and one couple had a big bottle of Maker's Mark. I noticed it was gone at the end of the trip - can't say if they drank it all themselves or shared it. I am definitely not a scotch fan - acquired taste I am sure. We brought wine but I had about 1/2 cup one day and couldn't handle it. Even with trying to drink all the time, it is easy to get dehydrated there and it made me feel immediately drunk. So I didn't try again.
Bye for now, compadres,
Anne

Anne,
That's a good idea but this is a tough place to hide. I'm hanging in but my workout tonight is still questionable. I do remember that Seinfeld episode. We still watch the re-runs. We still laugh.
Maker's Mark is a bourbon, not a scotch. I don't like scotch either. I tried but it still tastes terrible.
Oh, and for the record, you are a bona-fide nana in their book! They don't care about blood; only that you love them.
Dang, I'm sleepy.
Later, ladies,
I was in the pool spice.

Good morning guys.
Bert, hope you're feeling....errr...less tired, yeah that's what we'll call it . Did you get a work out in last night or did you go right into recovery mode? I can see you're a beer or bourbon man, me I'm a scotch girl all the way. Love that stuff, can't believe others don't. I guess it is an acquired taste .
Anne, those pictures are fantastic, the scenery is just incredible. It looks like you had a blast, I can't wait until we can go. Unfortunately it won't be for a few years, I just don't have the time to take any vacations like that but one of these days. Did you sleep on the ground? I mean like right on the ground or did you have a tent with a nylon bottom? I gotta be sure I can keep those snakes out or I would never sleep.
Oh and you're bathing suits look great, I love the blue one! Of course now Bert is going to want bathing suit photos of me too . Just kidding, no one would want that and besides it is very rare that I put one on. When we go to Maine, yes to the ocean, I don't even pack one. Anyway yours look great, I know it was hard for you to find one but it looks like you found 2 keepers.
Your grand kids are adorable, I bet they had a good time building that fort with grandpa. Did they sleep out in it? I couldn't be sure, is it in a tree or on the ground? They are lucky kids.
Diet wise....should I tell you I ate a whole bag, yes, I said a whole bag, of goldfish. They were left over from when the boys were here and instead of just tossing them as I know I should I thought I would have a handful. I did, then another and another .... Oh well, I wish I could say they were worth it but they really weren't . That reminds me I am reading The Omnvore's Dilemma, have either of you read it or hear about it? I just started it so I have no opinion yet. I also am intersted in a new bood I heard about called The End of Overeating by David Kessler, I heard about in when they interviewed him on NPR, I am just waiting for a paperback version.
Have a great day sober spice and swimmer spice.

Good morning rafting spice and skinny dipping spice,
Fran, I can't believe you go to the Maine shore and don't bring a suit. Swiming in the buff!! And you're afraid of sending a photo in a baithing suit??? You go girl. I'll bet Frank loves the trips to the shore.
Anne, you got me longing to get back out west again. I know I was in AZ in April but I'm having withdrawls. Mary Ellen and I were talking about how we might try to tie a trip to see you guys and get to Yellowstone and the Tetons but our daughter has hit on some financial problems and we're trying to help her out. We're not giving her any money. She's responsible for that but we're cutting her a lot of slack on rent, as in nothing. She'll make it but she has to do her part. For all intense and purposes, I've taken over her finances until she can get organized. She will. She's a smart gal. She's just made some poor choices. Don't we all???
I'm feeling much better. My a$$ was dragging all day yesterday. I went home and cooked dinner, waited about 45 min after that and hit the sack. Sleep was needed and I feel much better today. No workout last night but I'll hit it with a vengence tonight. GGGGRRRRRRR!!!!!!! P90X!!!!!!
Have a great day, spicy dudettes.
I loves 'ya!

Hi, Buds,
Yeah, Fran, I'm glad to hear that you are a skinny dipper! We have a "clothing optional" hot springs here in town so you'll fit right in. I know Bert is going to want to go to that too!
Yes, we did sleep on the ground in the Grand Canyon for the most part. We put a tarp down and our sleeping bags on top of that. Then we did not get in our sleeping bags until half the night was over because it does not cool off until then. They did have tents available but even though there is lots of ventilation in the tents, it makes it hotter and we did not need that. The first night it rained. We thought it was just a passing shower so we did not put up a tent. About two hours later, soaking wet, we finally succombed and put it up in the dark. Luckily, Ray had not even put his sleeping bag out yet so we had one dry one. Good news is that things dry out really fast in the Canyon. Snakes are not out at night and actually, I did not see one the whole trip. I was more concerned about scorpions but I didn't see any of those either. Red ants are nasty but they sleep at night too. One night there was a racoon in the camp - a baby one - and he or she ran over another woman's face while she was (trying to) sleep. That would have totally freaked me out. The guides saw it and got up and ran it out of camp.
Yes, the tree house is actually up in the air, spanning two trees that are close together.
Bert, did you know that people actually live in the West? Since you seem to like it so much, just thought I'd mention that. I don't recommend most parts of Arizona, however. Too darn hot in the summer!!! Flagstaff would be OK.
Fran, I feel your pain on what to do with food that you have around, don't want to throw out and don't want to eat either. I am also in the process of eating the contents of the freezer just to get it cleaned out. I think what you suggested yesterday with eating a much smaller portion of something high in calories and supplementing with something else lower in calories is the way to go. I would not even throw the left overs away - just save it for the next night. When I have snacks around, I tend to put them in the garage so I won't have easy access and then I bring them out when we have guests.
Speaking of throwing food away, that is one thing about the GC trip that drove me crazy. They had ALOT of food and everything that was left over went straight to the trash which was hauled out. I think most of us were appalled. For example, at lunch they would put out cold cuts, cheeses and all the accompaniments. I swear that most days there was a good 10 lbs of stuff left over - all gone. I know they followed restaurant rules but I think it was really a shame. I really wish they had put out less food and added to it as necessary.

Anne, what ever you do, don't tell Mary Ellen about sleeping out of a tent. I'm trying to get her used to the idea of sleeping IN one. If she thought a racoon would run over her face I'd never get her to camp.
I know what you mean about the food. I've seen situations like that too. You'd think they'd take it to a homeless shelter but I guess everyone is afraid of getting sued these days.
I didn't know anyone lived out west other than you and Ray. I'll bet they work too. Actually, we've idley talked about retiring out there but our good friends are moving from AZ to NC and we like being around the grandkids. We'll have to settle on vacations.
You know, we went to a friends house years ago and she was always talking about nude hot tubbing so one night I wore two bathing suits, one over the other, and when she brought it up again, I reached down and took the first one off and tossed it out of the tub. She couldn't tell I had the second one on. It a second, off comes her suit. We sat there a while and after about 10 minutes I said I'm going to get more wine. She was ready for me to stand up and when I did, she really got pi$$ed. I can't figure out why. We all had a good laugh over that. By the way, she now lives in Colorado.

OK, mums the word, I'll keep the tentless camping a secret. Besides, it's not like you couldn't use a tent - you would just be hotter and would miss the starry sky.
I think several of the women (at least) were not very used to camping but they were all great sports. And I'm sure it is an experience they will never forget.
That hot tub story is hilarious! I can so see you doing that!

Okay this is getting too Spicey...you guys do know that when I said I didn't bring a suit it was because I don't go near a beach right? Believe me me skinny dipping is not a site anyone, including me wants to see .
I think I could handle the tent thing, but how do you know snakes sleep at night....did they tell you or something? You have to understand there is an anaconda out there just waiting for me....and don't tell me they are in south America, I know there is at least one that migrated and is waiting.

Scardey Spice,
Snakes will not bother you if you don't put your sleeping bag on top of them! They won't go out looking for you at night!
Now mountain lions... that's a different story. They are stalkers, you know.

Good morning Anne, I know Bert is on his long weekends. I know it wasn't his choice but I do envy him. Back in the day when I had 5 weeks vacation I use to take every Friday off in the summer, it was fantastic. There is very little I miss about that job but that is one of the few things.Speaking of jobs, are you taking a little time off before you start to look around? It's great to do if you can. All I can say is I know when I lost my job it was really scarey but I have ended up in such a better place. I know it doesn't always happen that way and when I took this job I really didn't think it would turn out too well, but 3 years later I am really happy. I hope you have the same kind of luck.
I was "bad" again last night....this time it was the Cheez-Its....they are always in the cabinet but for some reason they were calling me last night. Oh well, as Bert always says we are making life syle changes and it takes time....maybe a life time in my case.
Have a great week end. We have no plans and I am looking forward to that. I think we'll take the dogs for a hike after work today to Mt. Wachusett which is just a local area just barely qualifies as a "mountain" but at least it's something and on Sunday hopefully, we still have some sunshine and we can take them somewhere off leash. The weather has been terrible here all summer but it looks like we might be headed for a good week end and my little guys need some real play time. I know I spoil them but they are my "babies". I tried lobbying for a goat but Frank is a no go on that issue.
. Talk to you Monday.

Hi, Fran,
It is good for us to reinforce those lifestyle changes with each other instead of getting so down about a bad day - or week. Even if you did have some cheese its, I know you are eating better overall. You aren't eating a box every night so good for you!
I do feel for you having limited vacation. Right now, I do love that I have alot more freedom. Time or money, a constant trade off, I think. Do you ever consider trying to go part time?
Hey, what is the deal with Bert anyway? Just because he has Friday off doesn't mean he should be taking off from cph. Did he check this out with us ahead of time?? NOOO! What do you have to say for yourself, Bert?
Hope you have a fun weekend with the puppies and the weather. We are planning to work around the house but then will probably be taking a little time off at the beginning of the week. The weather is supposed to be better then. It is OK now too but a little overcast.
Hey, we never discussed Michael Jackson's death. It happened while we were gone and I'm not really sure what happened. I keep wanting to look it up on the internet but haven't taken the time yet. I know the suspicion is an overdose of some sort. I have to admit that I was a MJ fan - of his music. Unfortunately, outside of that, he seemed to be a pretty tortured person. It's such a shame to have such enormous talent and such miserable life skills. I really question whether he was the child molester he was acused of being; my guess is that he was just overly strange. I guess now we will never know. I always hoped for a big comeback - that he would have surgery to look like himself again - and come up with a bunch of new music - but no hope for that now.
I should be done painting the lower level after this weekend!

Anne, you are right about Bert....who does he think he is anyway? Actualy I think he only emails us from his work computer...he probably thinks we are stalkers of some sort .
I didn't follow the MJ stuff too closely, I always felt bad for him, I do not think he was a very happy person, I do not understand why he disliked himself so much but I beleive he wanted to be someone else. The child stuff....I don't know my own feeling is he may have behaved inappropriatley but as to wether or not it was actaully child molestaton...I just don't know. In many ways he was a child who never grew up...why else would he make his home an amusement park? Like I said, I think he was very unhappy and maybe he just wanted children to be happy. Guess we will never know the truth.
Have a great weekend. I just got a call from my old boss and he had Red Sox tickets he is not using so we're going tomorrow night. I know you guys are not big baseball fans but Red Sox tickets are next to impossible to get unless you are willing to pay 4-5 times face value (which we have done) but these are actaully free---incredible! I guess in some towns you can just walk up and get tickets on game day, the Red Sox sell out the first day the tickets go on sale....beleive me last year we had 4 people on 4 computers and 4 phone lines for 2 hours....no luck and then they were all gone. anyway I"m going!

Have fun at the game, Fran. Ray is a big baseball fan; I'm sure he would love to go. Ray used to play alot of baseball and actually was invited to try out for the Pittsburg Pirates after high school. Then he played baseball at Georgia Tech but gave it up in favor of being more serious about school. Funny, GT is supposed to have one of the better records for getting their players into the majors so who know what would have happened if he had stayed. I never knew him until later but I hear he was a great player.
By the way, I am a stalker. Isn't that someone who eats alot of celery?

Good morning Spice Buddies. Well it's Monday again...boy do those weekends go fast .
I had a great time at the Red Sox game, of course they won....they knew I was there . Anne, Ray probably made the wiser decision by getting more serious about school, the odds are so high against hitting it big, even when you are very good, a lot of luck is involved. At least for the most part you know hard work in school will pay off .
Talking about getting serious, I have put on a couple of pounds and need to get serious about being more careful. I have stopped logging my meals and that is always a sign for me that I am headed in the wrong direction. I only write it down when I am doing good, obviously that is not the point of keeping a log. I will start again today....that's one of the best things about this weight loss thing....you can get a do over if you need to .
Have a great Monday guys.

Stalking spice and Cheese-It spice,
Oh ye of little faith! As it turns out, Friday was spent waiting for the cable guy to come to the house to fix the cable. I also happen to have Road Runner at the house so that was out too. A boring day and on top of that, I lost my HBO! We've had it for several years due to some error on their part and when they came out to fix the cable, they fixed that too. No more True Blood!
I am sooo sore this morning. I really kicked the exercise in high gear over the past three days. Plyometrics Friday, Back and Biceps Saturday and a 5 mile run yesterday. I hurt all over but in a good way. I ate fairly well too, over the past three days with the exception of two slices of pizza on Friday night. Oh yeah, I washed that down with a coupld of beers but other than that it was fine. Oh, almost forgot, I needed something sweet so I had a DQ Blizzard with Oreo cookies. Other than that, I was very good. Honest!
I can't say that I followed anything about Michael Jackson. I liked some of his stuff over the years but not much of it. He was talented, I'll give him that. I guess what really turned me off about the whole thing was how the press just oozed about him. He was an entertainer. That's it. Even our congress had "A moment of silence" for him. How many times have they had a moment of silence for our service men and woman? They should have done that every day when one or more lost their lives. They sicken me.
Now that I got that off my chest, have a wonderful day!!

Hi, Spicers,
Well, one of the good things about not having TV is that I get to miss things like oozing over MJ's death. I have to ooze all by myself. I still do feel sorry that there won't be any more of his music - and dancing. Whenever we go to a place that has dancing and they put on a MJ song, I am out there. Occasionally Ray comes along but not very often. Funny how guys seem to know how to dance before you are married and then later forget.
I GOT MY CROSS TRAINER BACK THIS WEEKEND!! I am really excited.
Fran, I know what you mean about keeping a log. That is definitely a help for me - and a problem when I don't. I have been having a very hard time since I reached my goal keeping up with it so now I have to lose some more weight. Luckily, it didn't get totally out of control. I did keep it up yesterday. I tell you what, let's make that our goal - to be faithful to keeping track. It will help me for sure.
Sorry to hear about your electronics issues on Friday, Bert. Just give that TV a shove out the window, that's my advice.

Oh but if I only could. I need the TV to do my P90X routines. Come to think of it, maybe I should toss it out the window.

Bert, where do you get these things!!??
We are planning to go hiking tomorrow so I won't be around - unless it rains or something. I weighed out all my food and calculated the calories. I think the PBJ sandwich is not worth it (260 cals) but it is easy to pack. I thought about raisins and almonds but too many calories there.
Fran, how are you doing on your food diary? I have two days in a row of keeping good track. Oh, boy!
Have a great day, Spices!
