A cross trainer is an eliptical machine with arms.  It is as close to running without actually running that I have found.  You can get a great workout in 45 minutes!

HI guys, just thought I'd check in before the week end. I was not very good last night, I went out and had a egg plant parm sub, wouldn't have been bad but the sub was very large and unfortunately I ate it all. Oh well, I've learned from you guys, we all slip so I just need to get back on the better food train.

The week end here looks like a total wash out, it raining now and they expect it to continue through Sunday, can't really complain though, we have had such great weather and a little rain won't hurt. The only bad part is they are talking torrential down pours and I will admit I do not like walking 5 miles in heavy rain. Guess I'll live though. I could go to the gym...nah...rather walk 5 miles in a downpour .

Have a great week end, and stay strong.

Hi ladies,

Well, we made it to Friday.  For some reason this week seemed to really drag.  I'm glad it's the weekend.

We're getting the wind and rain here too, from that storm off the east coast.  It's cold and wet.  I don't think we're planning on too much this weekend though.  We're in a real pickle regarding gasoline here.  The majority of stations are out.  We were expecting large shipments this weekend but it now seems we won't get as much as we thought and it will be 5 days instead of 2 before we get back to normal.

Mary Ellen and I have been car pooling and will do so again Monday.  If we don't get relief soon she'll be taking the bus and I'll be working from home.  We'll see.

My eating plan is to keep it light.  I'm still trying to reduce but I'm maintaining.  Did pretty well yesterday until my daughter came over.  I ate a mini Reese's cup and a couple of handfuls of candy corn that she bought.  She's a very bad girl.

My firewood gets delivered Saturday so I expect to be in front of a fire Sunday morning.  Temps will be in the 50's and that's good enough.  We haven't turned on the heat yet and it was 66 in the house when I got up this morning.

Have a wonderful weekend ladies and be safe.

Good Monday morning Spicettes. Hope you both had a good weekend. As expected it poured here all weekend so not much fun outside. I did manage to walk 4 miles on Saturday and 3 on Sunday but I usually do a lot better on the week ends. As for eating....don't ask....but I'm going to tell anyway.

Saturday was okay, I kept in control but Sunday we went to Trader Joes and I was looking to buy some sweet and spicy trail mix for my son, he loves the stuff and although I like it I can control myself. Well they didn't have any so I decided to pick up some chili spiced dried mangos. When we go out Frank said he was starving and the only place around is a pizza shop, I ordered a small eggplant sub and only ate half, the problem is Frank bought a large bag of chips and I couldn't keep my hand out. When we got home I decided to try a mango slice---do not buy them--they are completely addictive! I don't really know how many slices I had but way too many I can assure you. My supper was health but later I figured I had the chips and mango slices...may just as well have a dish of ice cream...so I did :chewing:. At least I did stay in control in that I only had one cup of ice cream, I used to think a large bowl was a serving so that part was okay. Anyway, not good and I am sure I will pay for it tomorrow when I weigh in for the week.

Do you guys use small dishes? I have found that has really helped me, I have bowls that are 1/2 and 1 cup size and those are what I use for ice cream or desserts, and my dinner plate is actually a large sandwich plate. The smaller dishes seem to really help me and the 1 and 1/2 cup bowls are great, I can really keep a handle on what I put in them.

So how goes the battle for you guys?

Onward and downward!

Hi gals,

Tough weekend.  My aunt is dying.  We're not sure if she'll make it to the end of the week.  She hasn't eaten since Wednesday and is living on sips of water and morphine.  She's 87 and my two uncles who are taking care of her are 88 and 83.  My mom is 84 so I suspect Mary Ellen and I will be doing a number of things until her sons can get in town.

We're still in a gas crunch.  I was up at 4:30 Sunday AM and finally found some at the 8th station I went to.  Had to wait a half hour on line but I filled Mary Ellen's car.  I have a half tank and we're still carpooling.  This isn't a national issue.  The south east gets it's gas from the area that Ike hit the hardest so we're really in a tough spot.  Hopefully we'll be back to speed by the weekend.

Didn't have time to workout over the weekend and ate on the run.  M.E. and I went out Friday.  Bad choice (Mexican) but it was great.  The alarm went off at 4:30 again today and I'm back on the bike this morning.  I"m pretty tired though.

Please keep my aunt and uncles in your prayers.  Send a couple up to our Lord for M.E. and me too.

I'll keep you updated.

Bert, sorry to hear about your aunt, it must be very hard on her brothers and sister. My mom was the last to die in her family and each time she lost a brohter or sister it took something out of her so I am sure this is very hard especially for your mom. I will keep them in my thoughts.

I had no idea, other than what you have mentioned about the oil shortage....call me crazy but since it is just one area why can't the other areas of the country send some oit to the southeast? Sometimes I don't get it, we have gas you don't..we share what we have and maybe it's a little tougher for us and little easier for you but we are one country...right?

I'm not sure where everyone gets their gas (not oil by BTW) but it seems that from Atlanta, into South Carolina and from Charlotte west, we get ours from a pipeline in the Texas/Louisiana area.  We had issues when Katrina hit too.  The gas only moves 120 miles a day through the pipeline and we're trying to pay catch up with demand.  I heard today that the national average price for gas is $3.66.  We're paying anywher from $3.87 - $4.19 in our area.  It's all over the place.

I don't know how gas gets distributed but we deffinitely need more.  Charlotte is the second largest banking center, second only to New York, and thousands of people are employed by banks.  Couple this with the new sale of Wachovia and B of A's buy of Merrill Lynch and the overall financial issues the country is going through, things are a mess here right now.

God is good though and He's good all the time.  His grace is sufficient and as long as my family is fed and safe by the time I go to bed tonight, I'm fine.  Tomorrow has worries of it's own.

My aunt is married to one uncle (my father's brother) and my other uncle, his brother, lives with them.  They're both trying to take care of her along with Hospice.  This too, shall pass.

Thanks, Fran.  Please keep the prayers coming.

Hi, Bert and Fran,

Sorry to hear about your aunt, Bert.  I will pray for peace for her and the members of your family.

Thanks for explaining the gas shortage; that does not sound fun.  I hope things get back to normal soon - if you can say that $3.75 is normal!  I had been wondering about Charlotte and the banking crisis.  I think of all of the people who are out of jobs or in danger of losing their jobs.  It is very, very sad.  Things did not have to go this way.  Do you have friends or family members who have been personally affected?

I had one food slip over the weekend - dinner at a Mexican restaurant.  Normally, I leave the chips alone but this night I did not.  aargh!  Other than that, I had a salad size tostada and 2 quesadilla slices.  I am paying for it today on the scale even though my other choices over the weekend were good.

Sounds like you both have had lots of rain.  The weather here is beautiful fall, gorgeous color.  We went out a couple of times this weekend just to look around at the trees.  It has still not peaked yet but this is my last weekend here for several weeks and by the time I return, the leaves will be gone.

Have a great day; onward and downward!

Hi Anne,

As a matter of fact I do have a friend that was laid off from Wachovia last week.  This was before the announcement that CitiCorp bought them.  It makes you wonder if this was in the bag long before the announcement and the talk about Wells Fargo buying them was just a smoke screen.  Who knows.  This stuff is way over my head.

Thanks for your prayers.  They are appreciated.

Yeah, that Mexican food is a killer but dang it's good.

Have a wonderful day.

Anne, I agree with Bert, that Mexican food is a killer but so good. It is the one kind of food I have to stay away from as much as possible.  It's not always easy, my son is a vegetarian and that is one place we tend to go when he's with us. Not to worry, one slip is just that. I think you are the one who mentioned never let your slid go for more than 3 days? I think that is a good rule, not that we should make a habit of it but if we do slip a little it's a good back up plan, better to get back on the next day but sometimes after Mexican the next day....just calls for chocolate .

Bert, they had a piece on our news about your gas shortage, it really sounds terrible, you have such a good attitude, me... I would be ranting about the ineptitude. It would do me no good and it would just stress me more I think your approach is so much better, you and yours are safe and that is what is important. But still..... our gas prices are actually a little low (compared to the nation)...they can't just send tankers full of gas from the northeast to the southeast???

I'm not sure what they can do about getting gas from other areas but they expect to get more by tomorrow.  We'll be fine.  It's a fun time to be in Charlotte right now.

I'll try to send those photos to you again.  I want you to see our mountains.  They're nothing like the San Juans but they're really great.

Have a great day my spicey ones.

Hello, Spicers,

Fran, I feel your computer pain.  I also need a new laptop - my personal one is unbelievably slow.  It's not only the shopping that deters me but also setting it up.  Then the current economy doesn't exactly get me all excited about going out and spending money I don't have to.  Oh, my.

I am leaving tomorrow for 5 days.  I will try to check in a few times while I'm gone.  In the meantime, be good and be strong!

This is a trip to a class reunion for my alma mater - University of Michigan Ross School of Business.  A friend of mine is the one who has been leaning on me to go to this.  She is coming all the way from Hong Kong for it!  I haven't seen her in about 10 years.  Other than her and one other guy who is coming for one day, I won't know anyone!

I will also get to visit my parents for 2 nights since they live about an hour away from Ann Arbor.  It happens to be my Dad's 91st b-day on Sunday and I will be there for that.

Quick trip!

Good morning Spicettes. Hope the week is going well so far....we're over "hump day" so now it's coast into the week end:cool:!

Anne, hope you are having a great time with your friend it must be great to see someone you haven't seen in so long (well, someone you like that is ).

Do either of you have any suggestions for protein rich foods in the 100-200 calorie range? I am getting a little sick of boiled eggs and chicken thighs. I eat 6 mini meals a day so I keep those "meals" as low as possible, under 200 calories except supper where I usually go closer to 400. Anyway, if you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. I try to stay away from carbs but I am not opposed to them especially the complex ones.

Talk to you later.

Hi,

I'm not sure if you ever eat breakfast for dinner but I do often.  You can take the following.

Omelet

2 eggs - 150 cal - mix up with a little cold water.  Spray pan with butter flavored Pam.

Prior to this you can sautee some chopped onion, green and red peppers in Pam.  Pour the eggs into the pan and add the veggies to the omelet you're making.  If you want, you can sprinkle a little parmesan cheese into the omelet before your flip it.  I like to add some chopped fresh basil too, just before I take it up.

Salt and peper to taste and add a little hot sauce if you like to jazz things up a bit.

The veggies and the little bit of cheese won't amount to much.  You can add a Trader Joe's chicken breakfast sausage.  One link is 55 calories.  It's a very satisfying and protein rich meal.

Let me know what you think.

Anne, hope you're doing well and are safe.

.Good morning, it's finally Friday! For some reason this has been a long week but the week end looks great and I am looking forward to getting outside.

Bert, thanks for the egg idea, sounds a lot better than another hard boiled egg . Of course when you start throwing words like "saute" around I get a little worried...starts to sound suspiciously like cooking .

How's the gas situation? Has it loosened up a bit?

Anne, we haven't heard from you...that must mean you are having a good time....I'm glad, we don't get enough breaks in life so have fun .

Have a great week end and remember to stay strong or if you don't at least make sure it is worth it!

Boy, am I glad it's Friday.  I've been in meetings since 8:30 am.  Just got back from lunch.

I think that, in general, sautéing should be within your skill set.   It can open up an entire new culinary adventure for you.

Gas?  Oh, I have plenty of that.  Ohhhhh!  You mean gasoLINE.  It's easing up a little but we're not up to pre-Ike levels yet.  We're still trying to conserve.  I've noticed though that more stations seem to have some and the lines aren't as long.  Hopefully by Tuesday things will be up to snuff.

My aunt passed away late yesterday afternoon so we'll be waiting to see who in the family will be staying with us.  We'll get through this.

Anne, hope you're having a good time.  Enjoy the weekend, Spice goddesses.

Bert sorry to hear about your aunt, it's so hard to loose family. I was raised in a very old fashion family, basically aunts everywhere (actually just 3 but they were very close) but they have all passed away and I do miss them.  Extended family is very important so I am sure you are feeling the loss deeply.

Anne, are you back from your wild week yet? I'm dying to hear how you handled it, it had to be a huge challenge.

My week end went pretty well, on Saturday I walked with my friends (and one dog) for 3 miles, it was a planed 5 mile but one of the women wasn't up to the full 5. A confession, this women often isn't up to the full plan....then why does she come? it kind of irritates me that she does this, she knew the plan but then she get there and says "would you mind if we just did 3, my foot is bothering me" so then you can be a jerk and say, actually I do mind or just go with the flow. So of course I just go along. Of course I can't blame her totally, I could have gone for another walk myself and I didn't. I did get a flu shot though so I guess I did something.  Sunday we took the dogs hiking, we were only out a couple hours but the trails were a little challenging so I figure I must have burned some calories . Food wise I stayed on track.

I'm a little worried about next week end (that's when we are going to Cancun) I know I am going to over indulge but I guess since it's only 3 days it can't be too bad..right? I am down to where I only have about 10 pounds to go, I hate to blow it now but I also don't want to spend my time there worrying about it., especially since it's an all inclusive and the food and drinks are paid for. One good thing is I find if I eat too much now I don't feel well so that will keep me in check somewhat .

Have a great week and onward and downward---or at least hold the line.

Hi, Bert and Fran,

I was just catching up on your posts since I left.  Sorry to hear about your aunt, Bert, and I hope the family visits and service go well.  When is the funeral?

Only 10 lbs to go, Fran!  Wow!  Congrats!

I had a very busy weekend in Ann Arbor.  The weather was beautiful and it is a walking town.  We walked and walked and walked and walked and walked.  I have blisters on the BOTTOM of both of my feet.  Luckily, my friend is also a walker - and also has blisters now.

I was certainly cognizant of my eating and tried to rein it in.  For example, still no alchohol, no ice cream, I ordered salad whenever I had a chance to order something.  Many of our meals were hors'd'oeuvres.  Don't get me wrong - I ate more than I have been eating lately and sampled some mini desserts - but my goal was to come back with no weight gain.  This morning when I stepped on, I had gained a ridiculous amount of weight.  I am not even ready at this point to say how much.  I am crushed and depressed.  I know there is no way I could have gained all this weight but then again, I know it can't all be water either.  What gets me is how much of a pattern this is for me.  It seems that whenever I relax in the slightest, my weight is just dying to zoom back up.  I mean, this was really only three days.  Will I never be able to just enjoy a little bit without paying such a high price?

I have only two days before I leave again.  Obviously, I am being very careful.  Sorry to be so down, maybe tomorrow I will have things a bit more in perspective.  It doesn't help that the economy is in such a position either!

Anne, that really stinks, but a lot of it could be water, you were probably eating more salt than usual and it sounds like you walked a ton. Whenever I do my charity walks I gain weight regardless of what I eat somehow I think all of that exercises makes us retain water even more so. I don't know that there is any science to back that I just know I always gain on those walks no matter what I eat but I loose it again within a few days so maybe that is what happened with you.  Next time you start to get blisters---think duct tape ---I know it sounds crazy but I found this secret from some serious hikers and it works great much better than band aids or those blister patches. I have all of my walking buddies using it and we are all duct tape addicts now.

I do know what you mean though about the feeling that you can't let up for one second, I feel the same way and I just hope that at some point this gets better because there is no way any of us can stay strict every second of every day.I have to believe if I am on track 95% of the time I will be okay but it sure doesn't feel that way.  I bet Bert has some input on this when he gets back, he must have had this issue too.

Anne and Bert, you are both going through some tough times here, Bert with a family death and Anne with all of your traveling, remember we are only human, do the best that you can and remember that anything you do...a cookie you turn down, an extra block you walk is that much better than nothing at all.

Hi ladies,

I'm back.  The funeral went about as well as could be expected.  They're never pleasant but we were all there for my uncles and cousins.  I appreciate your kind thoughts.

I did pretty well over the weekend (I guess).  Saturday went without a hitch.  Worked out and ate well.  Sunday I began running again.  First time in 20 years.  I went to the local YMCA and ran around their dirt track.  I did 2 1/3 miles in a half hour and then walked another third.  I really didn't want to push it and I'm glad I didn't. My thighs have been killing me for two days.  It's amazing how much differently you use your muscles from the stationary bike to a load bearing exercise like running.  God willing I'll get up and hit it again tomorrow.

Sunday afternoon my mom, sister, brother, kids and grandkids were over for dinner.  It was a nice afternoon.  Mary Ellen made lasagne and it was great.  I did reasonably well but had a big 'ol piece of apple pie for dessert.  It's my weakness.

I got up Monday before the funeral and hit the bike again for an hour.  I was good most of the day but we had pie left over so I had to get it out of the house.  :chewing:

Fran, don't worry about what you do in Cancun.  This is your vacation.  Remember that we are making lifetime changes.  The three days won't matter.  Enjoy yourself.  You and Frank can walk the beach and look at all the topless women.   That's plenty of exercise.  You can hit it hard when you get home.

Anne, I'll see you in a couple of days.  Please let me know if your plans change.

Have a great one, ladies.

Well, I think the whole thing about naked beaches is that they need to be in an area where naked is no big thing.  Otherwise you get the old wrinkly guys and gals from the love power generation on the California beaches - quite an unappetizing site.  On the other hand, the Greek Islands during Scandinavia school break attracts a very different crowd.

I lost my "water weight" yesterday and it wasn't enough!!

Bert, we'll see you on Thurs.  That iceberg lettuce head will be perfect now.

Hi Anne,

I just got back from the airport and went to information.  The old guy there said that the airport wouldn't give me a pass to get through security and that it was up to the airline.  I don't think he was really sure of his answer though so I'm going to check with some other folks.

I've got your cell number so if we get hung up and they won't let us in, I'll let you know and we can decide what we want to do.

If I get an answer before Thursday I'll let you know.

I agree with you about the naked beaches.  At my age, it's a good thing when passion takes over for aesthetic judgement.

I wish you could too and I hope I don't get stonewalled.  Security is such a bear now.  Normally it wouldn't be an issue but there are no restaurants in the non-secure area.  They're all past security so we have to figure a way to get in.  I'm optimistic though but if we can't at least I have Anne's number.  I hope it doesn't come to that.

We'll be thinking of you and toast you.  :martini:

Yeah, I wish you could be there too, Fran!  Well, we'll just have to arrange a later rendezvous on one of your favorite naked beachs somewhere!

Bert, I've got your cell number.  I'm also going to send you my flight number - I can't remember if I did that already or not.  Anyway, at least that way you will be able to check to see what the arrival looks like.

Don't worry if you can't come into the secure area - we can certainly meet you in the non secure section.

Good morning guys. Hope you two had a nice dinner last night....and a bourbon or two .

Well I just wanted to stop in and say hi, I will be out a lot today and then I am gone until next Tuesday. By then I will be lamenting the things I ate that I shouldn't have, oh well.

Have a nice week end.

Hi, Bert!

Oh, my gosh, Fran and I are gone at the same time!!  I didn't think about that!  Well, Fran will be back tomorrow and then you will have one buddy back anyway.  Oh, but then you leave for AZ!  Well, who would have thought that October was a busy vacation month?

We are enjoying the resort on Captiva.  Our condo is right on the beach and a beautiful beach it is!  Miles and miles of sand to walk on (my leg is better) and sea shells galore.  As a matter of fact, I think I would like to get out there right now so please excuse that this is short!

Fran, I hope you enjoyed your Mexican adventure and Bert, have a great time in AZ.

Bert, once again, it was wonderful meeting you and Mary Ellen and Fran, we missed you!

Your fellow beach spice,

Anne

What a crazy month for us Spicers Now if I got this right, Anne you're not back yet and Bert your off to Arizona, is that correct? So I am actually talking to myself...well that works .

Cancun was great, basically I spent 3 days laying around by the pool drinking margaritas and eating nonstop. Actually my eating was bad but could have been so much worse the only really bad thing I did is the last day there I had a pizza just because we had 24 hour free room service and I had to try it  . Sometimes I am like a 2 year old, just gotta see if it work...it did. We also upgraded to something they called "royal service" it was definitely worth it, we had a "butler" who basically was a guy who fixed everything for us. Boy I could get used to that life. But now it's back to reality and I have to fix my own problems so I'd better get to work.

When I weighed in today I was actually down .5 from last week but I am not dancing yet, I am pretty sure I will have to pay the piper, it just hasn't shown up yet. I'll have a much better idea in a few days.

Hey Fran,

Sounds like you had a ball.  I could use a butler myself.

I may not be going to AZ after all.  My buddy called last night and his 32 year old son, who is physically and mentally handicapped, is having severe problems with his back and they don't know what's causing it.  They are exhausted just trying to take care of him.

I've offered to still come out and help them with him and I'll know more later this afternoon or tonight.  I don't have to be entertained and they've been good friends for 34 years and I'd love to help them out during this time.  We'll see.

His son's name is Frank.  Please keep them all in your prayers.

Have a great day.

Bert, BTW--I was at your airport too, very briefly but we had to go through customs in NC so basically we got off the plane and back on but Iwas there! Nice airport though....we have the worst airport in Boston...they keep making improvments but it doesn't seem to get any better. Anyway, I was thinking of you when I was there.

Sorry to hear your friends are having such challenges in thier lives, I will keep them in my thoughts.

Hi guys, hope all is well.

Anne, enjoy the sun, wish I was still on vacation :sun:.

Well I was up 1.4 this morning, it's hard for me to tell if it's just the daily fluctuations or if I am getting my payback, either way, it was worth it so I will live with whatever it turns out to be.  Cocunut ice cream every day can't be good for your weight but it sure did taste good .

Have a great day.

Fran,

If you're up only 1.4 after a Cancun vacation, you're the bomb!!!!  That's great.  You'll drop that in no time.

Way to go!

Good morning Bert. So how is maintenance going for you? Are you finding it hard to stay steady? I really do think it is a million times harder to keep it off than to loose it initially but at least you and Anne are both in the same place, I'm sure that helps.

I am back on track after my vacation, actually I was surprised how easy it was just to get back to eating right. Even when I was away I found I made some better choices, no the 4 or 5 margaritas a day were probably not one of them:shock:. But in general I find I take smaller portions and I am at least aware of keeping my plate more balanced nutritionally. As my final splurge on the way home I bought a snickers bar, I confess it was a large bar but I found after eating half I didn't want any more....it was making me feel ill :dizzy:. I never expected that to happen, believe me before I ate plenty of those things so I guess maybe my body is getting more used to healthier foods and believe me I still have lots of bad habits .

Have a great day.

Hi,

My trip to AZ was cancelled.  Please pray for my buddy's son.  He's in a world of hurt.

I think the toughest part of maintenance is the mind set one has when they hit their goal.  By this I mean the drive to reach the goal has diminished and it's easy to fall back into old habits.

Because of this I'm beginning to vary my workouts by adding running again.  I'm up to three miles at a time.  I'm going to work up to five if my knees hold out.  I've started taking glucosimine and condroitin (sp) for the joints.  With this, the stationary bike and weights I should build enough muscle to increase my metabolism.

The weight isn't my focus now but rather getting to the next size in my clothes.  When I hit a 34 waiste I'm there and the real maintenance begins.  I'm not as driven for that though as I was to lose the 100 lbs.

All this said though I'm maintaining pretty well.

I'm taking tomorrow and Monday off to salvage some of my weekend that I planned.  Starting with pizza tonight.

Have a good one!

Bert
