Hello, Ladies

Where have you all been?  Last time I posted, it was Thursday and now it's MONDAY!!  You may be silent but you cannot hide!

Well, the damage has been defined; I gained 3 lbs when I was traveling the past two weeks.  I need to get back in focus here to get them off and keep moving down!  I am hoping that it might be easier at first because I have been eating more than 1300 calories per day.  But I did not post to my food diary while I was gone and I definitely need to do that.  I think it helps alot.

What are you all doing?  Remember our common goal of losing weight, getting healthy and feeling better.  Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels - keep that in mind!

I am wearing a lot of clothes that I have not been able to get into in quite awile.  I am especially anxious for summer to come around so I can wear shorts and cute skirts.  Today I wore a pair of courderoys that I really like but could not get into before and I thought about how nice it felt to wear them comfortably.  I still have more weight to lose for sure.  It will be a real milestone when I get rid of the extra fat around my middle.  I remember how it used to be when I sat down and there was no fat to pinch - wow, that would be fabulous to feel that way again!

JR, I know what you mean about the frustration of gaining weight back!!  The up and down is really a bummer - especially the up part!  I think that is why it is so important for us to think of this as a lifestyle - not a diet.  We happen to belong to the club of people who need to be careful about what we eat.  That is too bad but I think the only way to win is to have a consistent plan that we live by.  Of course, we will all have the occasional set back but the goal is to minimize those.  I know people who give themselves a very small weight range and work to stay within it.  If they are up two pounds, for example, they are on those two pounds right away.  That helps us from not letting two pounds from turning into 5, then 10, then 15, etc.  Try not to worry too much about what you may have gained back but focus on working your plan.  You know it will work!

Hope to hear from you all soon on your progress - and / or frustrations!

Hello!

Sorry, I have not been near a computer for a bit.  Sorry to hear aboutyour 3lb gain.  I think your plan and thoughts are right--journaling your food will help you to get back on track and to stay under calories.  Plus, now that you are home, you can get back into your workout routine.

I have been doing really well.  I have been tracking everything--everything--that I have eaten daily for over a week and have been doing a significant amount of cardio--walking two or three times daily, strength training, and doing cardio dvd's.  My hip flexor injury is still there, but it is getting better.  I just have to remain patient.  I am right on track with my calories and have been eating  alot of fruit, veggies, and protein.  I lost 1lb of what I had gained.  Originally, I thought I had gained .6lb, but now i think I might have gained 1.8lbs over my vacation.  I need a new battery for the scale, however, to really know what is going on.  I can step on and off the scale two or three times and the number is different each time.  Its a weight watchers scale, so I just need to figure out where I can get a new battery for it.

Anne--congrats on wearing the old clothes! That is the best feeling! I cant wait to get back into my old clothes.  You will get to where you want to be! you are doing everything that you need to!

It is frustratng to gain back weight that we have lost--especially when its so darned hard to get it off in the first place! I know I am very, very, very frustrated--especialy since the scale is refusing to move now.  I hope I havent reached a plateau after only 4lbs of loss! But, it is a lifestyle, as anne says.  I am making lots of choices that are going to add up to something great--health.  I have been drinking lots of water, working out daily, staying within calorie range, getting rest, and staying positive.  Lots of baby steps. I want to create a routine that I can live with forever.

Good to hear from Anne--is everyone else out there doing okay?

Melissa,

Great to hear from you and congratulations on being so good!  Don't lose your determination because it will pay off.   My typical loss was days and days of staying on track with no loss - then all of a sudden I would drop 2 or 3 lbs.  You just have to reassure yourself that if you are staying on track that it will eventually show up!  I am sure you aren't going to be stuck at 4 lbs!

Thanks Anne! I love to prove you right!  I stepped on the scale this morning--down another pound! Total 5lb loss! Yeah!

I am thinking that I need to relook at my calorie needs.  I have been eating, on average, 1350-1551 calories per day.  I am exercising a lot tho, and burning off pretty regularly at least 700 calories.  I am worried that I am not eating enough to make up for the deficit.  Any thoughts? Is this what I should do?  Sometimes I am hungry, sometimes I am not, but I would rather be losing 2lbs per week than one.  I havent lost more than 1lb per week since I started!

Greetings everyone!

Melissa, congrats on the pound!  Take a 5 lb bag of something and see how much it weighs - no small accomplishment!

I was doing 1300 calories per day and got some feedback from Nir that it was probably too low.  You want to make sure you aren't starving your body and lowering your metabolism in the process.  Have you tried going to the calories burned calculator on this site and looking at BMR and RMR?  That might give you a better idea of where you want to be.  I guess another idea would be to fluctuate your calories a bit - maybe 2 days of 1400 and then one day at 1800 or something like that.

Melissa, how do you mangage to get 2-3 times per day to walk?  I think I am doing well to get one exercise session each morning so maybe you have some tips.  I find it difficult to estimate calories burned.  My cross trainer says how many I burn when I am on it, but I really don't believe it - I think it is too high.  What method do you use?

I was a total pig yesterday.  I didn't even weigh myself this morning.  But so far today, so good.  I really, really want to get more weight off!  It will feel so much better.  I am going to review all my reasons for wanting to lose weight, post in my food diary and pray for strength!  Wish me luck!

Hello!

Thanks for the congrats Anne! I cant wait to get more off!

I have to read more about the BMR and RMR.  I would like to be losing 2lbs per week.  I am a wee bit confused on the whole process.  Today I went WAY over calories.  Let my emotions get ahold of me and i ate a whole bunch of bad food.  Well, i am drinking water and trying to make up for it.  Thanks for the caloric advice!

I walk a lot because I am unemployed.  That prospect doesnt look like its going to change for a while.  So, I've kinda been making fitness my job.  I dont have any kids or really anything to do during the day and no friends in the area, so I spend a lot of time working out.  I am someone who always needs to be doing something, and have always worked, so not having a job is killing me.  I am working out partly so I dont lose my mind.

Today, I didnt go for a walk this morning because it was too hot.  Yesterday, I didnt adjust to the humidity and heat well and threw up in the afternoon.  I was doing about 10 minutes into my aerobic workout and then had to run to the bathroom.  I really miss the northeast.  I cant take this weather.  So, because i didnt want to get sick again today, I didnt go for my walk in the morning.  i am waiting for my husband to come home and then we can go for a walk together when it is a bit cooler.

I did do two workout videos today, so I did about 100 minutes of cardio.  I did some mild core strength training exercises. I wanted to do some more leg exercises, but lunges and certain movements with my legs totally kills my hip flexor.  I keep hoping that I can improve enough that I can go to the gym and use the elliptical and bike.  I know I am in danger of getting bored with my exercise.  And boredom leads to falling off the wagon.

So, today I have eating approx 1600 calories and have not had dinner yet.  I think I am going to have some fruit or cantelope for dinner. Get something in my stomach so hunger wont keep me up all night.  Tomorrow, I have to and will stay in calorie range.

Anne--you can get back on track.  You had some problems staying on track while on vacation--its going to take a day or two to get back into the rhythm of eating and working out correctly.  I am sure you will get those lbs off! I am thinking of you!

Hope you're all good!

Hi, Melissa,

Thanks for the encouragement!  It is amazing because I decided to post again today - to keep my mind on the goal - and there was your post!  So, very timely.

I have been very good today, on track for a 1300 calorie day.  It has been hard to get back in the groove but I am happy with the progress today and am committed to keeping it going!

1600 calories doesn't sound too awful - it could be way worse!  But I know how it can make you feel too and that's not good.  Last night I stayed awake lamenting my failures of late which made me think even more that food is not worth it!  It is such a love / hate relationship, isn't it?

One thing you might consider is keeping some fish fillets in the freezer for nights like this when you really want to eat light (fruit does not sound like enough to me).  I like frozen tilapia and it thaws out very quickly - a little light seasoning and saute it in a non stick skillet with just a swipe of butter or spray is only about 125 calories.  Add some steamed broccoli and a salad and you can do dinner for 300 calories total and not feel totally deprived.

I'm sorry to hear that the job situation is not looking good for you.  Is the job market in Florida as bad as the real estate market?  It sounds very wise though, to consider this your time to focus on yourself and make lifestyle changes to improve your health.  So good for you.  Sooner than you think you will have a new job and then you will be wondering why you wanted to go back to work so savor the time you have now!

I will check in tomorrow with progress when I weigh myself again!

Hi, again, Melissa

I forgot to mention that I took a look at your BMR / RMR.  It looks like a sedentary person of your age / weight / height has a BMR / RMR in the 2100 calorie range.  So, if you were sedentary and consumed 500 calories less per day, you would theoretically lose a pound a week.  If you added to this burning an extra 500 calories per day (no longer sedentary), that should add another pound to your loss.  So, I don't think I'd go below 1600 calories if I were you and 1700-1800 might be even a little better during the early stages.

If you watch Biggest Loser, their formula for calorie consumption is 7X your current weight.  I estimate that this would be around 1500 calories per day for you.  I think the biggest loser diet is impressive but too severe and really could interfere with your metabolism.  That's why my guess is that 1600 would be rock bottom for you.

The only way you'll know for sure is to try it and see what happens.  You need to stick to it religiously for a long enough period - like maybe 2 weeks - to get a good reading on it.

Thank you Anne, I appreciate that.  I was playing around with some numbers yesterday and got some of the same numbers you did.  I am numbers dyslexic, however.  My brain turns off and fries itself when there are numbers involved.

I will try 1600 as rock bottom--for the next two weeks--and see what happens.  Gotta stir up the calories a bit! I think that when I am closert to the 1300 range, I have NO energy and get very, very cranky.

I will write again in a bit.  I want to go for a walk this morning before it gets too hot!

Talk to you soon! Thanks again! Melissa

Hello again, Ladies!

Hey, JR, how are you doing?  Florida Girl, are you out there anymore?

Melissa, I'm glad you will up your calories.  Not having energy is a sure sign that you are not getting enough nourishment.  Of course, the heat in Florida could be a problem there too.  I don't like the heat either.  72 is perfect!  Try to make sure that you are eating calories that count too - fruits, veggies, lean protein - instead of eating things that aren't good for you.  I notice that when I eat well the weight comes off easier than when I don't even if the calories are the same.

I lost two pounds!!  So now I am within a pound of getting back to where I was!

This weekend is going to be a challenge.  We are leaving today for Colorado Springs for a few days.  My husband's birthday is this coming week and he has been wanting to go to a couple of his favorite places to eat.  We are meeting his daughter and her family at Maggianos on Sat night and then friends for brunch the next morning!  Yikes!  I will be very happy if I can just hold the line.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts today!

Hello ladies!

JR--Florida Girl--are you guys okay?

Anne--:grin:CONGRATULATIONS  on your 2lb loss! I knew you could do it! here's to being within 1lb back to where you were! you can do it this weekend. Just watch your protions, drink your water.  You are always good about getting in some exercise while you are on vacation.

Anne, good point about the good calories vs. bad calories.  I will do well a few days with fruits and veggies and lean proteins--and then jump head first off into cookies and chips.  New goal for May is to eat good calories!

I went for a walk this morning and then came back and did a video.  I have strength training scheduled for this afternoon.  The heat does get to me.  I try to drink extra water and to not work out when it is really hot outside.  Sometimes, tho, its always hot outside!

I am leaving early tomorow morning for a wedding out of state.  I wont be back again until late sunday.  Wish me luck at the wedding! I dont think I will be able to do any walking or working out.  I am going to be plum busy! But my husband and I will be dancing, so that should count!

Good luck guys!

I went backpacking this past w/e, but I got no other exercise this week. My work and personal life are very demanding for me right now.    Making that promise here hasn't helped me much.   I'm still not  back into the "right mindset"  and I know it.  I did weigh in at 146 on Tuesday, which is down 2# from last week.  So I did make a little headway, probably from the backpacking exercise I got.  I have been drinking more water this past week too.   I've gotta get more exercise this coming week!   JR

Hello, Ladies

Well, it sounds like everyone is headed in the right direction.  Congratulations on the additional losses, JR and Melissa.  JR, I can so relate to not being in the right mindset!  That is so important and yet so difficult to create; sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not.  Don't be too hard on yourself as you will get it back.  In the meantime, a 2 lb weight loss is great!

I am now down to where I was before I left on vacation.  The tough part comes today and tomorrow with dinner at Maggianos tonight and brunch tomorrow am.  What I am hoping and praying for is that I can just stay even and then get back on track Monday.  I am not going to overdo it - at least that is the plan - but it seems that deviations from my normal food routine are tough.

I sent an e-mail  to Florida Girl and heard back from her.  She has been having quite a time with effects from her auto accident.  She also said she was planning to be back when she is feeling better.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Hello, Ladies

I have good news today - we have a contract to sell our house in Colorado Springs!  I am really happy about that.  I guess all the work we did in Feb & March has paid off.  Of course, it's not a done deal until it closes but I have faith that it will!  There are 5 weeks until closing so I'll be pretty busy with all the moving stuff.  I really have not figured out how all that is going to work.

Eating wise, I am still struggling a bit; no reason, no excuse.  I need to get back on that train and reach my goal of 35 lbs.  That was just the first goal; I still want to lose another 15 after that!

I hope you are all doing well.  Let us know what's up.

Anne! Thats great about your house! Thats a lot of work and I am glad it paid off! Are you moving out of state?  Sounds like you have a lot on your plate!

JR and Florida Girl--hope you're doing great!

Sorry I was mia for a couple of days.  We're having family problems and I got myself so stressed out that I've had a migraine for the past few days.  Really havent been doing much.  Just trying to take it easy, drink my water, get some mild cardio in, track my food.  I have been doing really well with tracking and drinking my water.  I admit that I need to get back on track with healthy food.  I have been within my calories but its not with the best food.  I need to go to the grocery store and get some healthy food--fruits and veggies--so I eat well.

I am hoping to go for a walk today when my husband gets home.  Its very hot out, but we'll take it easy.  I am doing some light strength training now.  Waiting for the most recent advil to kick in.  I havent been walking as much as I have wanted to and its killing me.  I really miss walking.  Hopefully, I can go for a walk early tomorrow.

Hope you are all well!

Hello, again, everyone,

I thought I'd get on early today and reaffirm my goal to get to 35lbs by the end of this month!  I'm on track today and plan to stay that way.  I may be posting more for awhile just to keep the focus on losing this weight!

Sorry to hear you are having family struggles, Melissa.  Those are never fun.  I hope everything will work out soon.

My mom has been in the hospital for the past week but is doing quite a bit better now.  We are hoping that she will be able to return home possibly as early as mid next week.  It is hard to see your parents get old and frail.

To answer your question, Melissa, no, we are not moving out of state.  We have a house in southwest Colorado near Telluride that my husband has been building.  We've been trying to sell our house in Colorado Springs for quite some time.  Obviously, the market is not good, but it will be a big step in the direction of simplicity to get it sold.  It is a constant headache to have to go back and forth.  There are always things to do there.  It is sort of weird how the timing worked out.  Every time we go to CS, we work on the house - one thing or another.  This winter we did alot more work and put the house back on the market early in April.  When we did that, we agreed that we were going to make a change from working on the house every time we came to town to doing fun things.  No more work.  Then, in late April, we got a message that our sprinkler system had  a freeze in a pipe.  So, we went back and had to work on that.  That was it though, no more.  I really felt the house was positioned for no more work and we could use it as a nice getaway - finally!  What a relief!  Then, within a week, we had an offer on the house that resulted in a contract.  So guess what?  Next time we go back, we will be packing to move all our stuff!  Unbelievable!

Hope you all have a great day!

Anne
