| I'm 5'8 and 145lbs, Im trying to lose 15lbs by cutting calories down to 1200 per day and walking 2 miles 5 days a week. However I feel so weak and out of shape ever since I had my daughter 15 months ago. What are some simple (i.e. can do at home with out expensive equipment) exercises to regain some strength? The walking is great, I just want to be able to go on hikes or whatever and not feel like I am going to collapse.

It sounds as though you are eating too few calories for healthy weight loss (1 to 2 pounds per week). I recommend that you figure out your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the minimum number of calories that you need to consume just to sustain life (with no activity!). You can find a calculator your BMR with the calories burned calculator on this website.
If you are eating fewer calories than your BMR, you're defeating the purpose. Your body will go into "starvation mode" and slow your metabolism to avoid burning calories.
You should also figure out your active metabolic rate (same web page). This is the number of calories that you need to consume each day to stay at your current weight.
For safe weight loss, eat about 200 calories more than your BMR per day. Make sure you're getting enough exercise so that this number is still lower than your active metabolic rate!

| Thanks for the help!! If that is correct I need to eat 1710 calories per day. Seems strange to eat more to lose weight, however it makes sense at the same time so I'm going to try it and see what happens.

| It does seem counter-intuitive, doesn't it? But it works! Be sure you're eating quality foods and not filling up on junk :-))

Hello Mxperk,
My friend Karen, owner of the website Healthy Travel Network, has an inexpensive product called FitDeck that she sells on her website that might be just great to help you with your home workout.
http://www.healthytravelnetwork.com/travel-fitness-fit-deck.shtml
It teaches and guides you through home exercises that don't require equipment.
Check it out!
Peter
