Hi, I was wondering about burnin calories while sleeping, and other stuff like watching tv, where you dont really..move.  I read on one website that you shouldnt count while you sleep because you are not burning calories while you sleep, but on the cal. it says you do.  So should I count sleeping?

I like to use simple examples so...

Your body runs on calories like your car runs on gas. When you stop at a stop light you're using less gas just as you use fewer calories when you're sleeping.

But just as your car keeps burning gas to keep the engine running at a stop light, your body keeps burning calories to keep your body running... lungs breathing, heart beating, body temp normal... even when you're sleeping.

Hope that answers your question. You might also read the FAQ on BMR & RMR.

Well ok ill give you what my opinion is... but this may or may not be right...

Yes you burn calories while you sleep. but no you should not count them in your daily calorie burning schedule... now ill give you my reasons... first you truly only burn calories for the end of one day and the beginning of the next... second this is usually not a huge amount, unless you sleep more then 14 hours a day (i dont know many non-teenagers that can) and third (this is really my opinion) i feel like its cheating... i really dont think you can count something that you need to do to stay energized for the next day and for healing.

So what im saying is its really up to you. count them dont count them either way you need to work on creating a caloric deficiency in your diet. I would truly count the things you do while you are awake and chalk the burnt calories while sleeping as icing on the cake!

Sleeping uses 1.50 calories per minute; for comparison watching tv uses 1.66 calories per minute
