Hi everyone, I'm 19 years old and relatively new to exercising and dieting. I've been hitting the gym for about a month now and I don't see any results on the scale. Sometimes I "feel" a little healthier but not seeing any results on the scale discourages me A LOT. I always read about people's successes in losing inches and I'm just so amazed. I can't seem to reach the same success.
My main concern is my stomach area. I’m just having a really hard time trying to get rid of it. I’m 130lbs but only 5 foot. Ideally I’d like to lose maybe 18lbs. I heard sticking to cardio is the way to go but I don’t know how much I should be doing. I feel comfortable at 30 minutes on the elliptical but still, no results. Am I just expecting too much too fast?
Also, I read that cardio helps lose fat all around. Is this true? If it is, how do I stick to cardio but not lose my butt? Can I achieve a nice, firm glute through exercise without making it too small?
I also want a shaped back and less flabby arms. I’ve been working on a couple of machines at a local gym but I don’t know if it’s enough.
My main problem is that I’m not seeing results and it sometimes makes me want to quit. What should I do? Also, what’s the best way to lose inches along my waist?
What have you guys done to see results and how long did it take?

I have read and re-read your post and I can't see anything about food, calories eaten or a deficit, so let me ask you straight: how many calories are you eating and what calorie deficit are you creating?
(and have you read the tutorial?)

Yes.
For example if you have a calorie deficit of 500 every day (created through a combination of eating less and exercising more, for example) you can expect to lose 4lb in 4 weeks)

For the goal of burning calories in order to create a calorie deficit (together with eating less food than before) - the most effective exercises are those at intensity you can sustain for say at least 45 minutes (depending on your fitness level this might be walking, or jogging, cycling, eliptical, aerobics class, intervals (walk - jog - walk - jog etc.) anything that involves moving your legs and increases your heart rate is a good bet
For the goal of not losing your butt, exercises targetting that muscle group should help - for example squats and lunges. To start with you can do these without weights but they'll be more effective with resistance (weight) added.

Change up your exercise routine to keep your body guessing! Drink LOTS of water, and most importantly, NEVER GIVE UP!

| What works for me is a toning video I bought - Denise Austin's Personal Training System. The uppers, lowers, and abs sections, when practiced faithfully, nail all those trouble spots. I always look 3" thinner immediately after doing the abs routine.

When I first started working out I was the same way. What i realized later was that while I was exercising a lot, I wasn't eating any better if not worse than before because I felt that since I worked out it would be ok to have those extra chips or an extra helping at dinner. When I finally realized I wasn't eating right and started eating the right calories for my size I started to see results.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have friends who run marathons and still they don't look fit. In fact, there are some who actually look fat. What does this tell us? Cardio is not the best way to burn fat! It is an excellent way to strenghten your heart and lungs for sure... but fat burning? no...
The human body has a tremendous ability to adapt. With cardio, you may see results in your first week after running for 30mins. Then the results stop because your body has adapted (conditioned) to being able to run for 30mins. You realise you need to run 45mins to see a bit more results,... then 60mins then 2 hours. Is this really an efficient of burning fat?
Furthermore, if your goal is to have a firm butt and nice curves like all women desire, then you need muscles. Muscles are what gives us the sexy shape that are appealing to the opposite sex. So your exercise routine should be a combination of strength training and interval training. Make sure its intense and change your workout routine regularly so your body will not get a chance to adapt.
