Hi, I am 14 years old, and extremely over weight. I have been trying to lose weight for over a year now. I have gone to the doctor many times, and they found out I have an insulin problem. Since my insulin problem has been fixed, I have lost 12 pounds in 4 months. Right now I am in summer vacation, which means I am not in school. I go back to school in mid August, and I would really like people to notice my weight loss. Problem is....I'm not losing fast enough to do so. I am very fit to be 315 pounds. I can do Tae bo, i can ride a stationary bike for an hour, I can do a stair master as well. My problem is, I dont know which exercise I should do. I have a birthday coming up and I get to choose something for my birthday. I was thinking about getting a treadmill. I am also getting a pool in a couple of weeks. What should I do? Is walking better than riding or swimming? Or should I do tae bo? Or all of them, and if all how much of each per day? Hope ya'll can help. Oh yes, and I have lost 40 pounds in one year. I did my bike atleast an hour a day everyday, but I didnt lose much weight when I was doing it.

Hi Shana,
Hopefully others will have more specific ideas for you, but for me the answer's easy.
The more you're moving the more calories you're burning. You can use the calories burned calculator to compare activities. But the most important thing is to find something you enjoy.
If you love Tae Bo or swimming or walking on a treadmill with a TV in front of you, go for it. Just be careful and start out slowly. If you overdo it you'll get sore and might hurt yourself. But most important, you won't enjoy it and won't keep it up.
Make your goal to improve your weight slowly and make it last. That's more important than making an impression the day school starts by overdoing it and then just putting the weight back on.
For me, that's been the real embarrassing part. Having people see it go up and down. So I finally learned to do it slowly and keep it off.
Have a great summer!
Peter
P.S.
I almost forgot... my favorite thing to "preach"...
Check with your doctor about this, but I suspect your doctor will tell you not to look to exercise as the solution to your weight problem. It's VERY important for your health, and does burn calories. But the solution to being overweight is solved by learning to eat highly nutritious, low calories foods. Not by continuing to eat junk and then trying to burn the calories off.

Peter, once again, is right! The first thing you need to do is talk to a doctor and make up a nutrition plan for you. Think healthy foods! Summer is here and its the perfect time to get great fruits and vegetables and start chowing down! the exercise you are doing is great!! keep it up! doing anything will help you burn calories!! the pool will be great! swim, dance, play marco polo!! anything you do will help!!
Good luck and dont worry the pounds will come off... you might not drop 100lbs but youll lose something and it will be worth it!

Hey there Shana
You sound like you have done a great job losing 40 lbs in a year, WOW, way to go. I commend you on your effort. From what I have read, swimming is a wonderful exercise, working all your major muscle groups, and walking will firm up your legs, buttocks, and lower abdomen, making you look trimmer from the waist down. (If you are looking for a "wow you look good" reaction from your friends in the fall, firming and toning will do the trick!! I also remember when I was your age, I ate lots of junk. Why don't you try, since fruit is in season as patesguy said (last post above), smoothies for either lunch or breakfast? Just get a cheap blender, throw some low fat ice cream (or skim milk with a bit of ice) in with your fruit of choice, I personally like bananas and strawberries, and let the blender go for a few seconds, pour it in a glass, and YUMMY, the best milkshake and it is great for you. Lots of vitamins and it makes you feels as if you are cheating on your "diet".
As another poster advised, freeze some bananas for a few minutes, if you like pour a bit of Hershey's syrup (low fat already) over them and dig in. I hate to feel deprived, I have lost 20 lbs in 5 months and look much better and feel better because I have changed my thoughts about what food is good to me. Fresh fruit and vegs have helped me. Good luck Sweetie.

hey shana, first of all..... you can belive how amazingly proud i am of you to be excersizing.. good job!
i agree with the others, that if you havent already, talk to an expert on planning out a healthy eating plan. if the person you are talking to starts going off on ANY of the fad diets that are going around right now, just leave, find someone who believes in long term lifestyle changes as the base of the eating plan.
as for which excersize to do... do them all! the more variety you have in your workout plan, the more you will stick to it. doing tae bo for 5 days a week for 4 years will definently get old. people always say how they get bored with their workouts, so the more varety you do - the more fun you'll have, and wont get bored!
now, i say do all of them, but dont like do them all in one day. thatd be crazy. take, say, an hour - maybe swim for 30 min, and tae bo for 30 min. or just walk for an hour, or whatever! get creative with it.
if you have a library near you, they usually carry excersize tapes, the library i have by me here has tae bo tapes too. and they rent for free! haha, so thats a thought if you get bored with the tapes you have now, if you do.
ok, one last thing, sorry to talk so long - i know you want to go back to school and be able to say BAM! look what i did over the summer!! but forget it. people in high school are so mean/ fickle/ surfacy... it isnt even worth impressing them. impress YOURSELF, and you will have much more sucess. i know i probably sound like a load of #%@&! right now, but take it from someone who knows - dont lose weight for other people, to be able to show how much you lost... lost weight for YOURSELF, for your own health. by doing that you will feel better about yourself and then, you will come across as more confidant and happy about your body to others. people wont always notice how many pounds you lost, but they will notice , hey, she seems happier, or hey, she seems more confidant, etc.
keep up the amazing work !!!! (and dont worry about loseing fast, thats not healthy anyway, loseing weight slow will mean better chances of keeping it off FOREVER, and thats what counts)
