I posted on these forums back in November-ish with a knee injury that turned out to be illiotibial band syndrome. I followed all the advice of my trainer, foam rolling, stretches, easing back into running, and in three weeks I was running 30 minutes every day. Eventually I built it up to 2 30 minute runs each workout, or one 40 minute run. In other words, I wasn't only back to normal, but on better form than before.

Fast forward five months - I've moved to Portland, and for a while working out took a bit of a back seat. I did it sporadically for the first couple of months, then took about a month off, and then got back into it regularly.

It all started with a run. I did ten minutes and got a tiny bit of pain. So the next day i did the elliptical instead, and then ran the next day. Knee was fine for a while. Only then, a couple of weeks ago, I ran and went on the elliptical and after 8 minutes I had an agonising pain in my knee. It's in a similar place to before, only much, much worse. I had to stop right then- whereas back in November I was able to push through the pain to an extent.

Throughout the day the swelling got worse. I could barely put weight on the knee and it hurt even while lying down, not moving it. And I could not bend it one iota. I stopped all working out and after a few days I started doing the bike. Pain was gone. Today I foolishly attempted the elliptical again and after a few minutes the pain hit me again. Badly. Again, I can't bend it, it's swollen, I can't walk on it.

It's hard to explain where the pain is. It's on the outside of me knee but nowhere near the kneecap. It almost feels as if it's the very top of one of the bones in my leg- does that make sense? It's the bony bit on the side of your knee, and it hurts to touch it. Does anyone have any clue what this could be? I'm going home in two weeks at which point I'll see a doctor, but until then I'm curious if anyone could say what it might be. It feels very different to the ITBS I had.

I can't help you other than to suggest you read (or re-read) some of the excellent resources about knee injuries on the net in order to have a better guess at what kind o injury you have (I used http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_5/194.shtml earlier this week but there might be better ones out there)

I first noticed my run on a 55 minute run on Sunday and then again on Tuesday (50 min) as well (pretty much from the word go). I've also noticed it on Wednesday and Thursday in Step classes. My next run is Sunday and I'm partly dreading it. I've discovered the ITB stretches. I'm "workout out through the pain" in step classes but I don't think I'll be taking that approach on the running.

You have our sympathies, let us know how you get on or what you discover

I have had itbs. I currently have a bit of fluid on right knee and achilles tendon soreness after recent 10k

I am in nowhere near as much pain as you and tend to train thru it. I do squats and if I get pain in kness I sit at right angles against door for 1 min slots with bare feet to strenghten quads. Also just lie down raise leg tighten thigh (quad) hold for 10 seconds and repeat on both legs numerous time during day. I also stand straight and put left foot next to right (and vica versa) and bend to the left the side where the itb is tight6 will feel sore and this is a nice stretch for the hips. See you tube for other hip itb stretches. I do other ones that are indescribable!! yoga type moves. I slo ice and heat knee when it swells up.

Most knee problems that are curable are caused by weak quads.

Otherwise if you don't heal. Professional help maybe required. Having said that other than sugery I always come out of these consultations poorer and get told to do more quad work!!!

My advice would be go see a orthopedic doctor or someone who's specialty is knees .  Running is the worst things for knees. Also when you had your first dealing with it in Nov did a trainer tell that is what was wrong with it ??? unless a doctor told you what was wrong with I wouldn't trust the diagnoses .. Keep doing upper body workout and stay away from any leg routine. Try elevating your knee so the tip of you toes are above where your nose is.Ice 20 mins every hr or how ever often you can do it. Pain relief you can combo tylenol and Ibuprofren just make sure to take them 1 hr a part and eat food with ibuprofren.   I'm in recovery from my 3rd knee surgery in 2 1/2 yrs right now. Knee's are no joking matter and should be taken seriously. In the long run (no pun intended) you might wanna find a different way to get your cardio and hang up the running shoes

The problem is there is an alien embryo incubating in your knee.  It is from planet Xonox37 and they are known to inhabit the knees of particularly sexually attractive males.  Wrap a dry towel around your knee for 5 minutes every day at exactly 7:39 PM GMT and it will vaporize.  You should recover within 7 months and 12 days.

Vega, are you sure it's GMT? I could have sworn it was Pacific Time.

There you go the beauty of the internet.

The cool runners web site definately says don't give up. I say don't give up.

Vegi Obscura has another view and aliens living in your knee is a totally diffrent take.

I disagree John since this isn't the first time she has had a problem with the area. Seeing how she the problem was supposedly healed and the started back jogging . With pain right of the bat. If this had been a first time issue then sure give a go but it isn't. These are signs that her knee can not take jogging .So it needs to be taken seriously and more then likely I'd bet a good orthopedic doctor would say give up jogging

I agree stop running when seriously injured, but don't give up for good is what I'm saying. See what I said above re quads. Also seeking help from professional if required.

I know I'm reopening an old thread (sorry) but it was really interesting rereading this, since my original knee injury was exactly a year ago.

Anyway, for anyone that cares - my knee is absolutely fine now. I can run no problem. (Actually, I sprint a lot these days too - also fine.)

I do have to stay well away from squats and lunges though. I demonstrated a couple of lunges yesterday and my knee hurt like crazy.

Then seriously look into that. Somethings not right if you can't do those without pain my 2 cents

Some people just aren't made for running, plain and simple.  I popped out my knee three years ago and it hasn't been same since then.  The best thing to do is stay on the elliptical, running just has too much of an impact on your knees.

This same thing happen to me about a year ago. I got that same pain in my knee, it got so bad I had to buy a knee brace. But the funny thing about it was how it would just come and go. I believe it was my IT bands, the pain is nothing to play around with. The foams bands became my best friend.
