In light of my brilliant yet thoroughly misinformed husband, I found this blurb on a weightlifting site (seemed to be geared towards women). And because my husband typically refuses to believe just about anything I say, it's nice to be backed by someone who is certified.
THe next time he tells me that i am going to bulk up by doing weights, I will have this memorized and recite it (some of it's changed, to fit me being the speaker). no, i'm not bitter, but really quite annoyed...
You can get too big from weight training. Sorry, I thought we were all over that idiocy by now, but the Globe and Mail's style section for July 28, 2001 tells me that to wear the new fashions I have to have a nice back. Okay, I can dig that. But then they give me my workout tips for it: doing some kind of row with a 2 to 5 pound weight, working my way up to 12-15 reps. Don't use any more weight, the article cautions, otherwise you'll add unwanted bulk. FOR THE LAST F#*&ING TIME, I CANNOT GET TOO BIG FROM LIFTING WEIGHTS! A NON-DRUG-USING MALE TRAINEE WOULD HAPPILY CRAWL ON HIS LIPS THROUGH A FIELD OF LEECHES TO ADD FIFTEEN CRUMMY LITTLE POUNDS OF MUSCLE A YEAR! DO YOU THINK THAT I AM SOMEHOW SO SPECIAL THAT I WILL DEFY THE LAWS OF PHYSIOLOGY AND SUDDENLY BECOME HUGE ONE DAY? MAYBE I NEED TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GOD D*&%ED TESTOSTERONE, HONEY! WHAT'S THAT? I CAN'T? OH, PERHAPS THAT IS BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TO MAKE ME BULK UP???? RAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH ZENOBIA SMASH!!
Phew, I feel better now. Must have been a steroid-induced rage ahahahahaaaa!!
that slays me. there ya go, girls!

Lol Great rant I hate it how so many people have the strange assumtion that lifting weights bulks you up....none of the women I work out with are willing to lift any more than 10 pounds "I don't want to look bulky" Hehe, my forty pound reps haven't turned me into the Incredible Hulk yet, don't think they're going to!

Excellent, zenobia.
I think your red text should be emblazoned on every gym wall and ladies should be forced to read it or forfeit their leotard allowances...

LOVE it Zen!
Not only your 'misinformed' hubs, but look at how many women STILL think that way?? In this day and age, and all the info on the net that's available, women still think they'll 'bulk up'. Goes hand and hand with the 'I just want to get toned' idea.

| Couldn't agree more. I still hear this from almost half of the women that I meet for consults. I always like to ask them how long they tried lifting weights before they noticed the added "bulk". Most of them have never lifted for more than 4 weeks. What do you do?
