I have a personal trainer at the gym I go to. I have to admit I cursed her name the first few weeks she worked me out, but after the initial pain went away...*snicker*...I realized she did know what she was talking about. One of the cardio workouts she gave me was a high intensity work out. On a machine, I use the elliptical, you set it for 30 mins. The first 10 mins are warm up..then the next 10 mins you alternate each min between all out and a little slower, then the last 10 mins are for cool down. For example, I will set the elliptical machine for random level 6. I will get my RPM up to 70 and keep it there, then on the 10 min mark I will go all out working my RPM to the highest level I can (highest for me was 99 RPM). Then after that min back down to 70 RPM and so on for the 10 mins. Then the last 10 mins are used for cool down. This gets your heart rate up and gets it use to being there slowly. I have been told that eventually she will work me to the point of having only a 15 second break between sprints....ack!
This gets your heart rate up without killing you!
Normally tho, I find that I keep my heart rate at about 80% when doing cardio, I am 32.
