| I am 6'1 and 20 years old. Since January 1st, I've lost 48 pounds. I now weigh 292. I can't run for very long, but I was wondering if running is actually detrimental for me considering how much I still weigh. Could that be bad for my knees or what not? Or would it be better to just walk until I feel I am at a more comfortable weight? I've always wondered this. Thanks for any responses.

I am also about your same weight and height 6'3''(weigh in 285 right now) and I lost 30 pounds since november. I personally have not had ANY knee problems what so ever, but what I do got is ankle problems. I would do heavy walking light jogging to reduce your chances of injury, and go easy on hills #%@&! it's easy to get shin splints.
I started jogging again lately but then my ankle started to hurt after a few days and its been almost 2 weeks now since I been able to walk without pain, I wish I started out slower again, but now I have to compensate with low/no impact cardio at the gym with the stationary bike and Arc Trainer or Elliptical.

Yes it could!
But more important, you wouldn't likely enjoy it and wouldn't keep it up.
Walking is great! SLOWLY go a little faster and/or a little longer as you work up in baby steps. If you don't enjoy it, you're overdoing it. If you get sore, you're overdoing it. Back off and start again.
It's important also to understand the difference between walking and jogging/running.
Walking, you ALWAYS have one or two feet on the ground supporting your weight.
Jogging/running, you only have one foot on the ground at the most, and the rest of the time NONE... and you come crashing down stressing your knees, ankles, and everything else.
Oh please... baby steps!

I actually enjoy running, but wasn't planning on really doing it regularly until I got down to 300 pounds. I have a treadmill that minimizes joint stress, as well as a decent pair of New Balance shoes that do the same.
Actually, I was planning on alternating walking and running in the beginning. I have a lot of weight to put on my legs, though, and I don't want it to cause problems later.
My grandma is VERY healthy for her age, but she did used to run, and she says that running and basketball is the main reason her joints hurt her now...I need to give this more thought.

I'd like to second Imaw89's comment about shin splints. It's easy to get them, they're painful, and it takes forever for your body to heal back up!
