I consider myself to be a pretty decent "gage-er" when it comes to gaging the intensity/time for exercise on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I notice that when I work out sometimes, I get an overwhelming feeling of dizziness and am forced to stop a lot in the middle.
This only happens on the weekends: when I bike in the morning before I have anything to eat. I was always under the impression that it's better to work out before eating anything for the day, as if one's body doesn't have food to draw energy from, it must draw energy from stored fat.
I'm beginning to rethink this theory , so I was wondering if you guys would suggest a pre-work out snack? If so, what would be my best bet for energy (without an overload of calories )? And how long should I wait to work out after eating?
Thanks!

Try a protein drink before you exercise. It shouldn't make you feel uncomfortable and will be absorbed easily.
Obviously, it's best to eat breakfast and exercise later, but if that's not always possible, you need to experiment to see what suits you best.

| I always have a banana on my way to the gym and that seems to do the trick, but people's bodies will react in different ways, so you have to experiment and see what works for you!

| I would try to stick with some protein for energy. One of my favs is tuna and saltines, but most people would not want that in the morning. So, maybe protein drinks or fruit shakes. Just plain fruit in the morning is always a favorite, also.

A banana for me as well! I save the major protein for after my workout.

I usually run twice a day, and I always have a light snack 1 hr to 90 mins before. In the mornings, I eat peanut butter on toast, 1 pack of oatmeal, hot chocolate w/milk, or dry cereal at 4 am. I seem to tolerate those pretty well before I run. I do the same in the evenings too.
After I've had my runs for the day, I eat some lean protein and get my veggies in. They take longer to digest, which is why i have them after exercise.
Good Luck!!

As Runner_Geek stated, make sure you leave adequate time after you eat before you start exercising. Make sure to drink plenty of water, too.
If you eat too soon after exercising, your body will be competing between calorie burn and food digestion, which is not optimal. Not to mention, you could easily become nauseated.
I eat between 300-500 calories for breakfast, depending, so I usually wait at least 2 hours before I exercise. If you just eat a light snack instead, you could get by with 1 hour, but it's advisable to at least wait for 1 hour at minimum.
As far as what you eat, both carbohydrates and protein together is a great choice. Try and stay away from fats before exercise, because they take longer to digest.
EDIT: If you drink just a protein shake or other liquid drink like nevd stated, you could probably get by with less than an hour, since liquid is absorbed so quickly.

Great advice everyone!
After a few more weeks of experimenting, I'm 100% positive I can't function on the bike without having something to eat first. I get dizzy, and often end up with terrible headaches . On the weekends, I now eat a light breakfast of organic cereal and soy-milk before every work out (at least an hour before).
On the weekdays, I never end up working out 'til 3:00 p.m (when I get home from school) so by then I've already had two meals .
I get a bit of protein from the peanut butter at lunch and cereal for breakfast, but I don't really load up on it. No offense to the protein shake lovers by the way, but there is absolutely no way I'll consider trying one ! They appear simply disgusting and over-loaded with calories. For my light exercise, these would probably cause me to do nothing more than gain weight .
I think I'll just stick to always eating breakfast before on the weekends, as for now that seems to have helped .
Thanks again everyone !
