I was wondering how often people replace their workout shoes. Can you please post and also say approximately how many miles you walk/jog/exercise in them per day?

I run up to say 3 hours a week of road. Grass and tracks. Less impact on joints. I change mine every 6 months ish.
I think the manafacturers say every 300 - 350 miles. They would would'nt they!
I bought 2 pairs in Aug on holiday in NY. Great exchange rate for us Brits. I buy Saucony. The first pair will see me through the winter and I will change in spring when things dry up.
If your running on road I would go 300 - 350 way. My way seems to work and I am injury free. (touch wood!)
I visual check also helps when they are limp and spongy they need changing. Check them against a new pair and you will see what I mean.

Put your running shoes on a table. Look at them from table-top level, from behind.
If they cant inward or outward, it's time to change, as they won't be giving the necessary support.
Also check for undue wear in a particular spot on the sole. When you see some, its time to change.
If the uppers are holed or frayed, the shoe may not offer correct support, so buy new.
Decent shoes needn't cost the earth, but unwanted injuries (from damaged footwear) could ruin your training schedule.

Good question! I've heard that if you use them regularly, they need to be changed every 3 months! Yikes!
I also have used Saucony's, they are my favorite. Now that I'm divorced (the jerk stole the money....grrrrrrr......) I cant afford shoes that often. What do you all think about replacing just the insides? They sell those things in shoe stores.

I ruined my knees running 9 miles a day and haven't been able to run for 30 years.
I usually talk about my being so compulsive as to run so far every day, and it was likely running down hills on pavement that did the worst damage.
But I also would sit on the sofa on Sunday evenings and build up the soles of my running shoes with a glue gun.
In hindsight, this was insane. The glue isn't even soft like a regular sole!
They were very lightweight shoes for running marathons, and I'm sure this all had something to do with ruining my knees.
When in doubt, throw them out!

OK I am shopping for new shoes now.
If I walk more than jog but do both, should I get 'walking' shoes or 'running shoes' or something else? I've got cross-trainers now, I bought them because I like the way they look and figured they would be good for a variety of activities.

These are what I have now. It doesn't really say anything about jogging, but they have been very comfortable. Any advice out there?

This is great! I been wanting to buy some new walking shoes. Not real sure what to get. Right now I use doctor scholls shoes cause they don't make my feet hurt. I use to buy reebox, but they would make my feet ache after wearing them for long periods of time. I am scared to try something new. But, I would think there is something better on the market for walking then just basic dr. scholls shoes. The ones I have now I only use on the treadmill and they still look new. But, now that I am walking outside, I thought it was time to get another pair.
Any suggestions on a good brand?

Just had to share my good news. I found brand new NB walking shoes at the Goodwill yesterday.... Score... I wore them for the first time last night and they didn't give me any grief. God, I love getting a bargain.

That's luck on the New Balance from Goodwill. That is a total score!
I just dropped bucks on 2 new pairs of New Balance today. I did end up going with cross-trainers again pretty similar to the ones that I had.
The website I used gives free shipping both ways and will issue a full refund if you don't like the shoes - as long as you return them in original condition. My husband got some Asics from them and we've been very pleased with this method of getting the shoes. Hope I like em though! 2 pairs, same shoe, different color schemes. I am thinking 1 pair for indoor and 1 pair for outside/wearing around.
