I was just wondering if anyone knew. I started seriously trying to lose weight about 3 wks ago. I go to the gym 6 days a week. I do 10 mins of the ellipitical as a warm up then I do 45 mins of weights then another 10 mins of cardio, usually the treadmill cause I am sore by then.
Now I have been doing this for 3 wks but only lost 6 lbs. A friend told me maybe I am exercising to much? Can that be possible? I am right now about 190 trying to get to 140-150 and I am 5'7. I am losing inches but nothing major either, I am still in the same size clothing it is just a little looser now.
Also I better add, my eating has been aweful until about 3 days ago :( when I decided to get that under control too but still I had always heard that you can basically eat what you want and still lose with exercise.
Anything else I should be doing?
Thanks for the advice,
Laura

Here's my 2 cents, but hopefully others will put in theirs, too!
Exercise too much? Listen very carefully to your body. It will tell you if you overdue it. (Problem is we can get just as compulsive about exercising as we can about eating!)
Eat what you want and still lose with exercise? Sure, if you burn more calories exercising than you gain eating. But calculate how much you have to exercise to burn off that extra dessert and you may think twice about it eating it.
Plus, if we want to be healthy we also have to care about WHAT we eat.
I sum it all up this way: http://www.eatwellandexercise.com/
Just my 2 cents,
Peter

My 2 cents...
45 minutes 6 days a week of weights sounds like too much weights. I usually hear it recommended not to do strength-training for the same muscles two days in a row; does your 45 minutes cover all your muscles, or do you alternate between different muscle groups on different days? If you're already alternating, I'd try cutting back to 20-30 minutes for weights each day and then replace that time with more cardio (cardio burns more calories than weights). If you usually cover all your major muscles every day, I'd try switching to doing weights for 45 minutes three days a week instead of six (take a day off inbetween each weight day); on days you don't do the weights, do more cardio instead.
It IS possible to exercise too much, but for most people, if you're taking one day off each week and not going over an hour each day, then you should be ok. (If you exercise for three or four hours every day, I'd be worried).
And, like Peter said, listen to your body. That works well for eating sometimes, too; listening to your body to see when it's really hungry, and what kind of food it really wants.

You should be very proud of yourself for sticking to an
exercise program.
However...
if you want to burn more calories (especially since you just started watching what you eat) I recomend you use that 45 mins burning FAT.
I highly recommend everyone walk (on a treadmill or around the block) for at least 30 mins daily. (6 days is great. but on that "day off" eat very healthy!)
I suspect in 2 weeks you will see a difference in weight AND in your size. 2 weeks if you are very overweight. more like 3-4 weeks for others to notice.
keeps using the weights, it's good for muscle tone, and strength. But it is not aerobic! If you aren't doing aerobic exercise, then you aren't burning fat.
If you are going to a gym for this. see if they have a LOW impact class. Even water aerobic would be great if you have any joint issues or are very over weight.
since you are doing the weights so much, I think you are probably in pretty good shape. You didn't consider that working with weights gave you more muscle. and muscle weights more than fat.
Although you haven't lost much "weight", have you thought that you have lost FAT and gained muscle mass?
Keep up the good work! I"m proud of you!
Please report back after 2 weeks of doign the treadmill longer. If you can do every other day of a whole hour of treadmill, and the other days of 30 mins treadmill and 30 mins of weights, you will trim down AND get that nice muscle definition. ( I envy you!)
Keep us posted! Can't wait to hear how it's going.

"I had always heard that you can basically eat what you want and still lose with exercise."
Sorry, but that is garbage. Most people can eat through an hour's worth of exercise without a blink. 1 McFlurry is over 500 calories, a slice of commercial large Pizza is 200-300 calories. Those big single slices that are sold are double that. etc., etc.
Eat normally and try tracking it over a few days. Using this site you can then work out an estimate of the amount of calories you use and take in to get an idea where you stand. For calorie values, you may need to use other sources as well or get it from companies web sites. A lot of packaging has it on the label as well.

You can eat all you want when you exercise a lot so long as what you want is fruits, veggies and lowfat yogurt :P
I think you're overdoing it. I understand the desire to really, really get into working out and do it right, do it strong, but looking at your schedule has me burned out just thinking about it!
The point is to make healthy choices day in and day out, and it's easier to keep going when you enjoy those good choices.
I like to take classes at my local Y — I enjoy working out with other people more than doing it by myself, and as a group we kind of depend on each other to be there. But when four days of an hour of cardio and weightlifting straight seems to be too much, I take a break and go for a skate or a walk instead. I also have a bunch of bellydancing tapes that are nice for a workout that challenges me to be graceful, if not to push it to the max, on days where I want a break, or just don't feel up to driving anywhere.
Also, when I am at my fittest, I find that the kinds of foods I eat have to be nutritious or my body just lags when it wants to hike or kickbox or anything. When you are healthy, your body won't want to fuel itself with junk food and empty calories. This is dangerous for me, because when I get pressed for time and start eating fast food at work, I tend to spiral down pretty quickly — eating junk and not exercising. It's a lot of work to get back on the wagon, but the way I feel, and look, makes it worth it. Every day of working out and eating healthy takes time and energy in our culture, but your body has a feedback loop to get there, it's just a matter of plugging into it.
Anyway, that's what works for me! Good luck!Last edited on 15 May 2005 12:15 am by Spaz Cadet

first off - its #%@&! hard to find ANYONE in america who excersizes too much.
that said, i dont think you are working out too much at all. i do think that you are working out wrong though - weights are good - and im happy for you that you are doing them! but, you only need to weight train 3 times a week. if you do more, you wont be doing yourself any good. your muscles need 24 hrs between each weight lifting session in order to really budil strength. so, add more cardio! cardio is a wonderful wonderful thing!
i have to disagree with someone in here though - musccle does not weigh more than fat.... one pound is one pound, thats all there is to it. the thing is that a pound of muscles does take up much less space than a pound of fat. thats why you may not be visably losing pounds on a scale - but notice your clothes are fitting better. can i suggest you measure your weight loss by using body fat percentage? (NOT bmi charts - those are whack, they are so bad.. i hate them...) if you have acess to it - body fat (like by caliper) is best way to measure...
good luck,
fly

Don't be afraid to work out 45 min/day with weights. Women are often afraid to spend too much time on the weights because they feel they will "bulk up" and that it doesn't burn calories. The truth is that the more muscle mass you have, the more calories and fat your body can burn while in a rested state. It speeds up your metabolism. And women simply won't get big like men because they don't produce enough testosterone to do so.
But varying your workouts is important. Never exercise the same muscle group 2 days in a row. Allow at LEAST 48 hrs of rest between workouts. However, to lose fat you must increase your cardio to 30 - 45 min per day, but try to do it first thing in the morning while your glucose stores are depleted. Otherwise, do all your cardio after weights for the same reason.
Also, 6 lbs in 3 weeks is not slow progress. If you plan to lose fat and maintain muscle mass this is about the fastest women lose weight. Men can lose about 3 lbs/week. So you're doing very well, at this pace you will not put the weight back on when you reach your goal and your diet becomes slightly less strict.
Now that you've got your diet in gear just keep it up for a few more months and you should reach your goal. Don't rush it! Good luck!

| Laura, keep in mind that intense exercise can also affect your reproductive system, causing you to stop ovulating and skip periods. Listen to your body, and talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

| The best way to loose wight is by alternatively walking and running on the treadmill for not less than 40 mts.Stat walking for upto 750 mtrs and then run for the next 250 mtrs.Keep repeating this action for 40 mts and increase the intensity as days go on,ie,walk less and run more. The results will be amazing.I've tried it and it feels great to know that there is something to fall back on everytime i put on that extra pound!!

| A few years ago, I decided I needed to lose 20 lbs. I bought an exercise bike and rode it every day, often twice a day. My workouts were very intense. I would get my heart rate up to 90-100% max and hold it there for an hour. After four months of this, I hadn't lost any significant weight. Pretty discouraging. I had always been a fairly healthy eater, but with a healthy sweet tooth too. I decided to cut back a little on the junk. I kept up the workouts and now the weight just fell off. In a month I lost my goal of 20 lbs plus another 10.
