| I recently bought a Polar heart-rate monitor wrist watch. The Polar website has a great deal of information on how to exercise the most effectively based on what your fitness goals are. It says 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate (220 minus your age) is ideal for burning fat. Going any higher uses your carbohydrate stores for energy instead of fat stores. But when I work out in the target zone, I don't feel like I'm getting any exercise at all. What have you all been told and taught is the best heart rate zone for burning fat? Thanks for your input.

There was something I always wondered about those heart rate charts that are based on your age -- as if everyone of the same age has the same heart rate.
When I was running all the time, my resting heart rate was 48. (Actually, at my best it was only 36!) I wondered if I got it up to the numbers specified in the chart... if it wouldn't kill me!?!
And what if someone had a very fast resting heart rate. Then they wouldn't have to work hard at all to get it up to the numbers in the chart.

| This is something I've also been curious about. I can workout at a heart rate of 170-180 for an hour, but the trainers tell me not to. Some people say you should workout in the "fat burning" range which optimizes the percentage of fat burned from calories, but other articles I've read say that if you work out for the same length of time you are burning more calories and the same amount of fat calories. I don't feel like I'm working very hard in the heart rate range of 140-160, which is where I'm supposed to be. Anyway, just wanted to see what others had to say.

| According to my Exercise Physiologist, opitmal ercercise for weight loss is 40 minutes sessions with your heart rate at 70 - 80% of max...FOR MOST PEOPLE. If this doesn't seem to fit with your body, she suggests using your Resting Heart Rate plus 30 as a starting point. If I do 12 minutes on a stationary bike or recumbent stepper, my heart rate is up to 80% of max in about 4 minutes. I'm loosing 2 lb per week exercising 3 times a week for 36 minutes each while eating 2000 cal per day.
