Hi,

I wonder if you can give advice about exercise?  I have heard that walking 10,000 steps a day can help to lose weight.

Can anyone tell me how many calories it will burn up walking 10,000 steps around the house?

Do the 10,000 steps have to be done in one continuous session or can they be done by doing some in the morning, some in the afternoon and so on?

Does walking for 30 minutes around the home burn as many calories as walking on flat ground outside?

I think the 10 000 steps that you have heard of, would be the 10 000 steps program.  This was a program to developed to help people that work and dont have time to "exercise" as such, to master a way to a healthier heart and also they could see how active they were/are throughout the day.  Our local library lets you hire a pedometer to track just how many steps per day u do on an average.  They do not have to be taken all in one go, as 10 000 steps is an awful lot.  Although having said that, at work i do an approximately 14 000 steps in 6 and a half hours but this includes walking to and from work.
Now, walking is a great form of exercise, however, it would depend on the intensity of ur walking as to how many calories you would burn.  Your weight, fitness level and ur age would also be other factors on how many calories are burnt.  I believe any walking, even walking around the house aides weightloss.  I walk lots.. any chance i get.  Walking for half an hour a day at a reasonably fast pace will aide in weightloss and help with toning.  The best thing to do is set urself goals and just go for it.  You will feel the difference, and see a difference within weeks.

anyways i hope this helps a bit.
blessings and good health

It's all about how much energy you expend. Think of a car and gasoline.

It uses more going faster and/or going up hill and/or carrying a greater load.

The only difference in walking inside and outside would be the surface you walk on, hard or soft. Try walking on sand and you'll see how much more energy it takes. A lawn would take more than a sidewalk or hardwood floor.

Hi,

Thank you for the replies.  I suppose walking up and down the stairs a few times whilst doing the 30 minutes walk would act like having slopes to walk when you're outside.

I suppose I am trying to burn an extra 350-450 calories per day and would like to be able to keep to this on a regular basis.

You could walk a known mile and see how many steps that is for you.  Then you could take your total steps in a day and divide it by that number to find out how many miles you walked in the day.  Then you could estimate your speed of walking.  So then you would know distance and spped.  And with those numbers you can go to the calculator here for Calories Burned for Walking activity and find out how many calories you are burning.

Hi CC,

Walking is always good. Moving is always good. To really burn calories you need to get your heart rate up and keep it up for at least 20-30 minutes. That's hard to do around the house unless you live in Buckingham Palace. That said, walking around the house is still better than sitting there watching TV or sleeping by leaps and bounds. You're burning more calories that way, you're just not at your "optimum zone". Does that make sense?

A fun thing to have, and do, is to get a pedometer. Get one that is not the cheapest, but not the most expensive model. Most sports stores carry them, probably big stores that are popular now have them too. You put in your weight and stride and it tells you how many steps you walked each day and how many calories that burned. They are sensitive, so it will also pick up revolutions while you drive, so be careful to see what it's doing and just be consistent. If you count the driving, make sure you count it everyday, even weekends. Record your progress. You'll find yourself getting up and walking for no reason other than to make the number higher at the end of the day. It's fun. Park the car a little further away, take steps instead of elevator, go the long way around the building or the mall, whatever makes things just-more. If you have a dog, walk the dog farther. Just remember to bring water and make sure that the dog's feet are not burning on the pavement if it's very hot outside. Look for signs that the dog is tired. They get heat stroke fast and there are no real warning signs.

Good luck~
