Hi all. Just wanted to share my story of how I lost well over 50lbs in five months without excess cardio. This all happened last April through September 2007. I'm male, was 28 years old, 6'3", and at the beginning of April, was around 240lbs. I had been weight training consistently since December of 2003, starting out at about 190lbs, as well as maintaining a high protein diet, getting well over 200grams of protein daily through mostly tuna, chicken, and protein bars. I also ate alot of canned food like beef stew and ravioli to try and image a weightlifter's/ bodybuilders frame. Well, in April of 2007, I found myself having trouble fitting into 38 waist pants and knew it was time for a change. After doing NON-STOP research online, I created my own diet plan according to my specific goals. One of the major things I learned from someone on another blog, was to completely cut cardio. I asked as well as you may ask, how the heck do you cut cardio and lose weight? The answer, you are what you eat. I thought this was too good to be true but I gave it a shot anyway. I did very little cardio, maybe an hour total of walking for an entire week along with grass cutting and teaching a karate class, which I hardly sweat. I do practice karate kata almost daily for no more than five minutes but that's just going through the motions and not getting my heartrate going. Mind you, I was doing my weight training as always, three days a week, for no more than a half hour at a time, and still taking in well over 200 grams of protein daily. The only thing I changed in my diet was that I got rid of the bad carbs, and ate only fiberous carbs. I would still eat small meals every three hours throughout the day and the biggest adjustment was adding oatmeal to my regime. Oatmeal was really the secret. I always ate brown rice, a fruit and a veggie throughout the day but oatmeal is what changed everything and I ate two bowls everyday! Not the plain stuff either. The ones by Quaker Oats that you get in the variety box. I also cut all carbs out of my diet everyday after 6pm. Some of you may think I'm full of it, but this is the God's honest truth. I actually added carbs to my diet and the weight came off. By September, I weighed in at 190 and my daily intake of carbs was anywhere between 150-200 grams daily. I then took October through February to "maintain" what I had to see if oatmeal indeed played a factor in the weight loss. I only gained a total of four pounds in that time while eating one not so good thing a day whether it being frozen chicken nuggets or a fast food meal or whatever. I began the same strict diet at the beginning of March this year starting out at 194 and have dropped an additional nine lbs to be at 185lbs today! The cool thing is that for the first time in my life, my abs are coming out really nice. I also went to a clothing store the other day and I could button a pair of 32 jeans! Snug but it buttoned! Any questions, please feel free to ask at anytime. This diet worked for me and hopefully some of you will benefit from it as well.

Congratulations on your success.
So you count carb grams and protein grams, but not calories? (what about fat grams?).
Regarding this "no cardio" rule, do you have the rationalle behind that one?
If you know about somatotypes, any idea what type(s) you are? (I ask because the advice to limit cardio and consume a high-carb diet is usually dispensed to ectomorphs.)

No I never counted calories. I don't have time I was an ectomorph all the way up until I was around 25yrs old, then I became a fat ectomorph I truly believe that you are what you eat. Like I mentioned, I was always on a high protein diet and really didn't overeat when I initially put on the weight. It was just that I was eating the wrong carbs and not the fiberous/ complex carbs. I was always the type that I would stop eating when I felt full. As far as the cardio/diet ratio, I really don't have a scientific explanation why it worked for me and some others I've encountered. It may not work for everyone.

Great Job!!! Maybe one day I will be able to take control like you did and stick to a weight loss regime. I just have to find one that works for me. Would you reccommend a food journal? Everyone else on here says that it is a good idea.
Take care,
Carla
