It's almost time for the next challenge, everyone!

Here are the guidelines for the Independence Day Challenge (similar to those of the previous ones):

  1. The challenge will run from Friday, May 1st through Saturday, July 4th.

  2. You may join the challenge at any time beginning March 1st, and late-comers are most welcome. You can even join the challenge in June.

  3. To join the challenge, post your height, starting weight and goal weight.

You may choose any goal you like. But if your goal is to lose more than 18 pounds during the challenge period -- more than two pounds a week -- please explain why you think your goal is realistic.

This website is dedicate to healthy, common sense, lasting weight loss, and does not support crash diets which do not have realistic expectations of producing long-term results.

For more information, please see the Tutorial and the forum topic The Most Likely Reason Your Diet Will Fail.

Your height will be used to display your BMI. Disclosing your height is optional but as incentive to share your height with us, unless told your height I'll just assume you are 5' (1.52m).

  4. Pick a day for your weekly weigh-in, and stick to it a closely as you can. Then post your current weight each week -- or as often as you would like!

You may wish to read:  How Often Should You Weigh Yourself

Those who are not losing weight, and those who are gaining, will receive praise for continuing to participate. It's so easy to run and hide! We've all been there ourselves.

We also know that by participating, they are very likely doing better than they otherwise would be.

  5. The results will be updated every Saturday (or more often) and posted right here just below these instructions, so they will always be easy to find.

We want the challenge stats to be realistic and reflect active challenge members, so anyone not posting for two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the list. But they will be put right back on the next week should they post again.

If you need to withdraw from the challenge, please have the courtesy to post a farewell note or send me a Private Message (PM). Your name will be removed without comment.

  6. You are encouraged to share how you are doing during the challenge, and especially to give each other support. However, to make it easier for me to find your weekly weight, please make sure your weight stands out.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them or send me a PM.

Wishing you success and happiness!

Nir

Hi Nir,

Thanks for setting up this challenge again. I saw it more than half way through last time and felt it was a bit late to join.

My height is 5ft 4in and my weight is stuck at 154lb I'd like to get own to 147lb to start with. I'll weigh in on a Fri.

I'll be away on holiday from 18 May to 25th May so will miss weigh in for that week.

Nir, thanks for doing another challenge. After my abysmal performance last time I really needed another one. I will definitely not get left in the pink this time....well at least I sure hope not .

I love the BMI idea, it adds another way to gauge ourselves, thanks for thinking of it.

My height is 5'3", my starting weight is 133.9 and my goal weight is 128. I will weigh in on Tuesdays.

I'll tell you what else is funny, the last 'Independence Challenge' was in 2007, and also started by a brit! In 2008 we had a 'Peter's challenge' but you need Peter to run one of those

Ok then. My name is Nir, I'm 5'5". Let's say my current weight is 123lb. My goal weight for this challenge is 121.1lb. I will weigh-in on Saturdays (because July 4th is a Saturday). Below is a 7 month view of my weight gain and loss. At that point I was around 116lb (BMI 19.3) I want to reverse the rapid gain but progress has been slow so far. I'm currently on a 1500 calorie diet. My unadjusted RMR is 1400. I exercise about 90 minutes every day (it is an average - sometimes less, sometimes more).

I'd like to thank whoever is running this challenge

Hi, I was hoping another challenge would start up soon! Thanks Nir

My starting weight is 254lbs and my height is 5'4"

My goal weight is 236 and my weigh in day will be a Friday.

I've been stuck floating between 251 (17.13) and 255 (18.3) for the last 2 years, so 236 would put me down into the 16 stone bracket, which I haven't seen for a very long time!

Currently I have no idea of my calorie intake, but a reasonable guess would be 3000kcals + per day. Also, my lifestyle is very sedatory.

Good luck everyone!

Nir - I have added another post further down with my correct weight on. My first weigh in came out a few lbs less than I had thought.

Thanks Nir for running this challange!

I'm 5'2 and my start weight is 133.8

I'm going to aim for 122.6 as that's about 1% of my body weight per week, and not end in the pink this time!

Alright, wasn't going to do this. But, here I am . Sigh me up for friday (excluding this friday, unless it's good of course ) weigh ins. Maybe that will help me with my struggling weekends.

Starting weight 133lbs

Goal weight 124lbs

5'4 height

Oh yea, I alway go on vacation over the 4th. So, I will try to figure out a way to get my final weight posted. It might just have to be late. Like on that monday after the challenge is done or something. Depends on where we go and what we do.

Also as some others have posted, I want to end this challenge out of the pink....

Thanks, Nir, for running this challenge! Blimey, you're ace. I plan to lay off the scrummy bits.

OK, about this challenge. It's going to end with me being under 200, unless I die or enter a comatose state. I've been so close a few times, only to fail, but I WILL NOT FAIL this time. I have laughed in the face of my biggest vice (food), and while I still love good food, it does not have the same control over me that it has in the past, and I do not plan to give that control back.

Height: 5'11"

Starting Weight: 214.0

Goal Weight: 199.0

Let's do this thang!

I am trying to do my best also. Wow, never realized just how much I snack during the day, until I quit doing it, lol. Sucks! I want my pretzels, granola bars, and all that other stuff I eat.... :chewing:

I am fairly comfortable with where I am at right now.  Just going to keep at it steadily.  I am more focused on improving fitness and conditioning and the weight loss will follow that.  1 pound per 2 weeks is a deficit of 250 calories per day.  If the weather cooperates and I can get good exercise in, it is possible.

Thanks for the new challenge Nir......

I made it half way to goal for the spring challenge......At the beginning of a challenge it seems like it is a piece of cake (oops) to lose 10 lbs but each week passes soooo fast and there I am with hardly a loss......so here goes again......yes I can, yes I can, yes I can!

Monday's weight was 176

My goal  on or about July 1st will be one pound a week and hopefully I will lose  8 pounds and reach  168

I am  5'5"   I will weigh in on Mondays.

                                                                                       :coffee:

Thanks again Nir:wink:

I will be starting at 64,4kg and my goal weight will once again be 60kg. I would really want to get lower than this, but since I've only lost like 1 kg this past month I don't thing I should be shooting for more than 4kg for 2 months. My height is 160cm

I hope to actually reach my goal. Especially since I will be going home to Denmark in the middle of July.

Edit: Since it's a friday today I will weigh in fridays, though I probably won't but I will update at least once a week.

Hi Guys

Thought I'd say hello. After a year and and a half of hanging around this site and using it, I have volunteered to help Nir out and have a go at running this challenge for a bit.

Nir has been very patiently teaching me the ropes from scratch. He has done a a great deal of work an our behalf and I hope I can help and not hinder.

If nothing else I know what an excell spreadsheet does now!!

Any new members and existing, can you post your numbers in big and bold red so they stand OUT!!

Thanks Artistjohn, your efforts on our behalf are very much appreciated and you too Nir, thankyou.

I have a confession to make, I'm not very computer literate. I learn on a need to know basis and once someone shows me and if I continue to use it I 'don't loose it' I'm apologising before I post my update on Friday. I don't know how to change the colour. I'll give it a go now.
Ok I've change Now to red, bold and size 7 and all that's happened is that the information has come up in brackets. HELP.

I'm grateful to both Nir and ArtistJohn for running this.  Thank you both so much!  I'm ready to give it another go.

Height: 5'9
Starting: 184.8
Goal: 179.8

My goal may seem small but I'm going on vacation to France tomorrow and  I know that I'll gain weight there.  I'm okay with this.  It's a rare treat to go to europe and I don't plan on watching what I eat at all.  I'll be posting again on May 22 so I'll let everyone know the damage.

Post on Thursday

I would prefer to report my average weight for the week, instead of what it is just on Thursdays.    If that's not OK, let me know.

My weight can change as much as 2 pounds in one day, plus I don't have a digital scale yet.  I think the average would better reflect the actual weight.

Thank you for running this challenge Nir & ArtistJohn.

I will post the weight you give me for the week Nancy. As a guy I retain water. I drink loads of water and nothing comes out. If I do a long run I will be 2 - 3 heavier next day. The next day after frequent trips to the toilet I will be at a weighable weight. This may change when I get rid of excess body fat.

I have lost 2 lbs:grin: Now 195 lbs.

In English weight I am now 13st 13lbs. (14lbs in a stone) I hit this weight in Apr 08.  I am determined to keep going this time and adopt a lifetime change.

I am now into a weight range I have not been in for 20 + years!!!

In English weight I am now 13st 13lbs. (14lbs in a stone) I hit this weight in Apr 08.  I am determined to keep going this time and adopt a lifetime change.

I am now into a weight range I have not been in for 20 + years!!!

I wonder if that is how I am. Cause after a big workout in the evenings, the next morning I always weigh more instead of less. Then it comes back off later. It's very strange and very discouraging when you work out.

Also, congrats on meeting a weight you haven't seen in 20 years. That is great!

Well, as it stands now I am the same weight as when I started. But, I will give an official weigh in tomorrow. I am going to try and be really good today. Maybe I can get rid of a pound before tomorrow.

Hello everyone... I have taken a little break and of course put about 20 lbs back on from my low. The good news is I am still down over 20 lbs from my high. Since my buddy John is helping with this challenge then I will have to join. Monday morning my starting weight was 256 lbs and my goal is to lose 2 lbs a week and so giving myself a little wiggle room my goal weight is 244 lbs. Take care all and I will also try to post alot more as well. Coach K
