Lisa, I'm really sorry for my total confusion. If you remember what you did this week let me know. I'd really like you to stay in the challenge. It is very easy to modify this chart at any time.
Congratulations on the weight loss. Eight pounds is fantastic! Last edited on 31 May 2009 01:20 am by Nancy_in_GA

I love those lazy days where you watch clouds roll by. I haven't done it much lately... Should go out and do that more often! Devote more time to doing "nothing"
I am a rock collector too. People think I am weird because I always carried "rocks" around. Wether it's your basic cool looking speckled rocks or big hunks of crystal, mica and other metals / gem stones. I also have some chunks of Native American pottery from my friend's property in New Mexico. There was an old hunting encampment near where she had build her house. I used to find arrow/spear heads all over too. Around Washington/ California/ Idaho / New Mexico.
Which this reminds me, has anyone ever been to Carlsbad Caverns in White City New Mexico? That place is awesome! It's really neat to go to the caves in the after noon. Explore the caves and then near dusk go back the the cave entrance and watch the bats fly out into the night to go catch bugs.
I will post my exercise stuff in a bit. I have to go!

Ugh, this cold has gotten worse. No energy. Should have taken it easier yesterday. Anyway I'm going to do upper body strength tonight and lower body tomorrow, even if it kills me. That's the plan anyway.
You guys are doing great! Last edited on 31 May 2009 09:40 pm by Nancy_in_GA

Nancy, sorry you have a cold, summer colds are the worse. Not sure if they are actually worse or just feel that way because you want to be outside doing things, not having a stuffy head...or worse a sore throat. Hope you feel better real soon.
Karels, great job on the weight loss, 8 pounds is great. I have to say those flavors of slimfast you mentioned sure do sound good.
I told you guys yesterday I took an extra class, well it was called Power Hour and it is based on military stye trianing (so they say) any way it is intervals of running and weight lifting and it was intense. Anyway, I have to say this morning I am woke up stiff and my muscles are really feeling it today...guess I must have done a little too much. Oh well, it was fun and if I can fit it in I will go back. It was the most fun I have had doing any kind of strength training. Maybe that is the key....cause me pain and I like it .

From what I've read a little pain and soreness the next day is a good thing---means you're building muscles. Who knows?
I got the strength in today but it was torture. Had to reduce the weights. May take a walk this evening because I've not done anything else for 2 days.

I'm just back from Spain. I did a 4 mile walk each day, swam (built up to 50 lengths) and ate lots of fresh fruit and veg. I've just weighed myself and I've lost 5lb.
Events have overtaken me, I'm out of my routine and although I did continue to exercise it was in a different way. Walking outdoors is just SO much more natural and less of a chore than the treadmill. I might even try jogging next.
Thanks Nancy for setting this up, making and updating the wonderful charts. It not only gave me the kick start I needed but also motivated, challenged and encouraged me.
Thanks to everyone on the challenge for the inspiration and encouragement, it helped keep me to keep going.
Oh yes, I got one of those resistance bands. Next challenge is to start using that!!!!!
Welcome back! The trip sounds awesome and you lost 5 lbs! Congrats!
I find that the Slimfast and other diet "shakes" tend to have to much sugars and too little dietary fibers and proteins for my taste but I think they have the right idea with the multiple meals per day (5-6 small meals) and incorporating fresh fruits, veggies and meat portions the size of your palm (just a few ounces). I guess your stomach takes 3 hours to empty completely and if you feel hungery you should grab a bottle of water or something like green tea. (BTW part of this information I am giving is coming from an ex-Navy Seal guy I have been talking too.) Just drinking more water has made me feel a whole lot better!
Yeah, a little pain and soreness is from muscles reconstructing. Remember the Army slogan of "No pain; No gain!" No muscle building means no fat loss! Many women I have found are affraid of becoming toned and have muscles. I don't think that having nice toned muscles is something to be affraid of! I also think that this is a stigma that has been imprinted on females by male society to be a frail thin and weak person. And if that is the case... All the more reason to go get fit! Men are very competitive! I have many friend's in the military and it ticks the men off when women can beat them at push ups and pull ups and what not! Not only do the women pass the female standards but they pass the male standards with flying colors. (Remember that song: "Anything you can do I can do better! I can do anythign better than you!")
Also, try doing more stretches before possible during and after workouts! I find that it helps more with the soreness parts and will reduce damages.
WORK OUTS!:
Monday: gym was closed for the holiday weekend so I just cleaned house and then walked around at the park with Dave for (about 1 Hr and 20 mins cardio.)
Tuesday: 6 mile walk (1 hour and 40 mins cardio - Trying to walk faster) and the 30 minute strength circuit. I walked to the store (30 mins cardio)
Wednesday: Did nothing.
Thursday: Hit the gym again. (1Hr 45 Min cardio) 6 mile walk and (30 Min) strength. Later I walked around the neighborhood with my friend. (about 40 mins cardio)
Friday: Went to the gym for my last 3rd day of the week to close out the fitness study. Measurements and official weigh in when I go in again. (I only walked about 3/4 of the way there and took a bus the rest of the way it was just too hot to be walking in the sun!)
(1 Hr 30 min walk and 30 mins strength).
Took a walk (40 min cardio) later at night when it cooled off some.
Saturday: Cleaned house. Walked to the laundry mat with Dave and did a couple loads of clothes. (20 min cardio) Took a walk with my neighbor, Gayle, (about 40 mins cardio) and then a little later we went to 7-11 for her to get some soda. (20 min cardio)
Sunday (today): Did 30 mins of cardio so far today. (I may do more in a bit here. I have been cheating on my diet the last couple days!)
For a few days now when I go for my walks to the gym I feel like doing a walk run / jog. But I have to get over that embarrassment of running in public. OMG! When Dave and I walked to the laundry mat an older man went jogging by us and he was only wearing sunglasses, shorts and tennishoes! He had man boobs and was VERY hairy and had whipy curly white hair, slightly balding and a big bushy mustache! I have to give him props for running nearly naked in public, over 80 degrees out around noon though...

He gets no props from me...one of my pet peeves, men without shirts ...unless theylook like the guy in the old diet coke commercial I say please, please put on a shirt. Women wear shirts, even when it's 90 degreees out why shouldn't men?
Well for Sunday I didn't do much but I did get a 35 minute cardio workout in.

Ended up going to the track this evening and 3 laps, mostly fast walking. Not sure the strength exercises today did any good because I couldn't do them with the usual weights. Maybe a waste of time.
Sunday: Cardio: 42 mins Strength: Yes

I was kind of being sarcastic! lol I honestly do not like men being allowed to run shirtless. I once heard about a woman who was a breast cancer survivor and she had had both breast removed. No tissue or nipples at all! Just two scars on each pectoral muscle. To make a point she went running topless and STILL was charged with indecent exposure as if she had gone streaking! Left over sexist type treatment... If she had breast tissue and nipples still she would have been just as fine placing tape over her nipples and they wouldn't have done anything to her!!!
There's coffee stands all over Washington now (and probably other places too) where the women working there wear practically nothing! They have on thongs, cowboy hats and little flesh colored stickers over their nipples and it's LEGAL! Men dump their coffee from home out the window as they pull up to get a fresh cup from these girls!
I don't know whether to laugh at the men and how easily taken advantage they are or to scold the coffee company for coming up with the ideas!
When I was a security guard in Seattle I found out that you can go around naked as long as there is no minors and no one is offended and at that point it is NOT considered indecent exposure. But seriously both Dave and I did not want to see a big sweaty, hairy, floppy, man-boob chest flailing towards us. Nor did we really expect it. I scoffed and Dave let out a little giggle and said "Yeah, really!" and then kept his eyes to the pavement until the man went past us.
Not only all of that but it was nearly 85 degrees out in full mid-day sun and he did not have a water bottle or anything with him at all! Very unsafe!

Ok, I had 100mins cardio on Sat. and then 40mins cardio on Sunday. I was real happy with sat. I ended up hitting the trails at the campground. Next time I am there, I plan on going all the way around the lake. That should take up at least half a day.

I guess we're going for another week? For Monday I did 30 minutes cardio and Yes for strength.
This challenge really pushes me, I hate not to do it when it's written down. Weird how small things can motivate us.

Yes! We're going on, on a week to week basis, until someone cries 'Uncle!'
Here's the "sliding" 6 weeks summary chart. See the first week is dropped off and a new week is added. (Check the dates.) Anyone who had at least half the weeks filled in is still on there, hoping they might come back.
Anyone out there want to join us, please jump in!

Today 17 minutes walking part way to the last break in the fence at farm, 2 hours to repair, 27 minutes walking back the whole way with a load of tools. I'm done with fence mending!!! Until another tree falls on it. BTW, it's tick and chigger season again.
Tonight to the track for 4 laps, jogging only enough to keep heartbeat rate up, 42 mins.
Monday: Cardio: 86 mins Strength: None

woo hoo!!! i LOVE TO SEE ALL THOSE STARS TOO! Hiker, I am with you, the stars are super inspiring for me to get up and get moving! :)
I would like to adjust my time for yesterday, MONDAY as we decided to uproot 9 feeders off of a tree and transplant them, then we uprooted a small chinese elm in the road and brought it home too. That was another 1.5hours and I also failed to add in my lawn mowing as time...i just listed it instead, but it was a workout!!! :(
Monday: 210 min cardio, 60 min strength.
Today, so far just watered and getting things situated before mj is up. Have a wonderful day! :)

45 min Cardio for me today. MJ and I took Simon on our walk today.
No Strength, unless carrying my 32pd child for about two blocks counts! ...while walking our doggie simon for his first walk...lol...he was soo good!!! Since he showed up at our gate we hadnt taken him out at all...and he was so well behaved on the leash! MJ walked almost the entire 2 miles! Ran some too! Me, today I just walked faster, no running today...but it was uphill so i still did a good walk!
If I do any more today, I will report back. Kinda just relaxing for a spell while mj takes a nap. We need to go scoop the horsie poo when she gets up, its after 3 days so there is PLENTY to scoop!!! LOL

i have to keep my workouts creative or i would get bored! :) cant get bored or else i lose the motivation. Its crazy to think last year at this time, me and mj were scooting in her zoomer stroller on these walks and now she is walking with me instead! time goes too fast!
:)
i also scooped poo, vacuumed and moved furniture around in the living room. that was an hour of activity. :)

There's a battle going on here between me and this cold. I've been trying to fight it with exercise. I know, "Rest and drink plenty of fluids." Phooey!! I only like to rest when someone tells me not to. Anyway it's not working. So I'm saving strength exercise til the end of the week. Enough whining...
To the track, 3 laps, and back, jogging only enough to keep hb rate up.

Ok, so yesterday (Tuesday) was the bike for an hour then a walk. So, a total of 100mins cardio. I also did 20mins of strength training in the morning. Man, can I sure tell. I am so sore. I am going to try and keep it up. I can really tell a difference. I do need to rest my muscles some today so it might just be some yoga to stretch out.
It's amazing what switching things up will do for a person.
Oh yea, I also vac and mopped all the floors yesterday. So, that was a little more cardio. But, I don't count those things even though I am working up a sweat doing it. I just figure those as little bonuses.

Ok, I said I was going to back off. But, I made up my own routine on the wii and I was suppose to do only 20mins. But, ended up at 30mins. for strength.
Then I did cardio, bike and walking for 90mins.
My poor muscles are sore. I might soak in the tub tonight...

Way to go, Cindy!
Raked many years accumulation of leaves and sticks from around the edge of the yard today, cut that tree trunk up into 3 pieces, threw it all in the back of the pickup to haul off tomorrow. I've reclaimed about 2 feet of lawn on one side. Now if I can get the grass to grow there. Very hot today. Summer's here, I'm afraid. Still 83o at 9pm.

Nice, Cindy! I find that I have to sometimes dig deep for the encouragement or whatever to get up and get things done.
Tuesday I went to the store and also did my 30 Cuves workout.
About 1 hour 30 mins Cardio walking and 30 mins strength on the machines.
Today (wed): 1 hour 45 cardio and 30 mins on the machines again.
My neighbor got me into trying out the whole Avon rep thing. (so if anyone wants anything you can look online and then tell me to send it to you) LOL! We're doing our first hostess party this Saturday and have been running around getting ready for it. (wish us luck!)
Edited:
On a sad note I guess yesterday there was a planned shooting and robbery at the Wal-mart my boyfriend works at. You can check it out on the King 5 news page. It's up as a top story right now. luckily my boyfriend was at home, if he was at work he would have been in the back of the store in his area and thankfully not the front where it all happened. One of the store employees knew about the money drop times from the armored car guys and a whole group of them planned this big scheme out to shoot the delivery guy and take the cash and run. I think it was about $60,000. There is a bank inside of our Wal-mart that was getting the drop not the Wal-mart itself. Still the Loomis guard is gone because these people thought they were going to get super rich robbing a cash drop truck.
Dave probably heard about it when he got into work earlier today and I just heard about it from my neighbor a few hours ago. (I don't own a t.v. so I don't regularly watch the news.)
I heard from my neighbor that they are connecting the man to several crimes around the Puget Sound area now. Andthese people went on a shopping spree and had over $100 dinner at Red Lobster after the incident.
Today I got the results of my month long Avon/Curves fitness study. I lost an overall total of 9.75 inches (combined from bust, waist, abs, hips and upper arm) no difference on my fat thighs so far!

Karels, sounds like a lot going on in your area, Ican't believe someone would shoot another person over $5,000. I know we shoot eachother over far less, it just always amazes me.
Great job loosing those inches . We all have those areas that just don't want to shrink, for me it's the waist line. Don't worry about it, you are doing fantastic and it will come. Especially as you build muscle you will see more results. Nice job so far!

Last month here a professor at the university shot and killed his wife and two other people. Then he comitted suicide after burying himself in the woods. Left two young children. Sad case.
Today 36 minutes of walking through the woods toting a backpack and a 10 pound gasoline trimming saw. Also spent 30 minutes milking a goat---long story. At least I won't have to do any hand/finger strength this weekend.
Thursday: Cardio: 36 mins Strength: None

what is with all the drama and hate in our world? dont people have anything better to do than take their pain out on others??? its a sad world Nancy, you are correct. The least we can all do is try to be the better people. :)
today exercise is basic, i kinda have a headache..allergies maybe. MJ, Me and Simon took another 40 min walk so that will be my cardio for today. no strength as of yet. I pulled something in my left upper arm last nite....reaching behind me to move my body pillow i like to lean against so i dont go rollin off our 3ft high bed! and i felt a tear and pain and burning....so i am babying it today...
I think its the hard shoveling I was doing on Monday, jerked my upper arms really good. At least, that is the only thing I can think of. I am very hard on my body, I seem to think I am invincible.....
thank god i met my strength req's because i just dont got it in me this week....wierd, but true...

I edited the bit on the robbery at my Wal-mart. I guess it was $60,000 that was in the money bag for the Anchor Bank in the store not $5,000. Still there's no real need for it. I guess one of the guys was asked what he would say to the families and he said that an apology would do nothing and not bring the victim back. Then he went further to say that the money would have made him forget. People like this do not deserve the title of being human.
Walked to the grocery store today: about 40 mins round trip and about 20 mins of strength
I keep getting my days mixed up! I last posted on here at 12 am on Thursday and talking as if it was still Wednesday! Silly me!
But still! Went with my friend to run errands yesterday (Thursday) About 2 hours easy walking around... in over 80 degree heat!!! Gah! We were trying to dodge the heat by ducking into the buildings with air conditioning! lol It's hard to believe it was still snowing here in April!

It is so easy to get mixed up on days especially since we are all over the country. I know for me becasue I'm on the east coast and a bit of an early bird anyway I feel like I am a day ahead of everyone . Excecpt for Cport .
I need to kick up my cardio a little I think, for today Friday--45 minutes cardio and yes for strength.

Oh my goodness I thought the page was never going to load! Something weird is going on with the web page today!
Oh hey! I forgot Dave and I did a brisk 45 minute morning jog / walk on Friday.
Today (Saturday) I only did a 20 min walk so far and I am going to be pretty busy the rest of the day so I doubt I am going to get around to doing any more! It makes me feel guilty when I have stuff to do and I can't get all of my exercises in. I guess that is sort of sill though!

Well it's Saturday and I did my power hour class, 45 minutes cardio, and strength as well. This class may kill me yet, they have us running, then dropping for push ups, run some more, stop and do some weights, run some more stop and do sit ups. You get the picture, it's torture but somehow it's fun too. Maybe it's because you have others suffering with you

hey guys!
yesterday I took the day and relaxed, it was super windy and like a dust bowl outside...so we just went to the grocery store and then hung out.
Today, 3 hours of light cardio..so that would be 180min for me for saturday, no strength.
Tonite, we were having one friend over, but now its a small party, three friends are coming over to play music and hang out ...so that blows my evening for being good! Darn it! And then sunday is MJ's 4th birthday, so I will be making cupcakes with the confetti mix and sprinkles . Daddy brought her a huge #4 balloon and an adorable princess castle birthday card that breaks apart and makes a little castle with a princess, white horse and all! Very cute! We may or may not have our neighbors over with their kids in the afternoon and with the wind, we may not go do anything outside either.....
Have a great nite and Sunday ladies! :)

Hiker, that class sounds really beneficial. Is that what they call interval training?
I'm saving the last strength for the last day. Tonight to the track and back and 5 laps. Trying to get the most out of the track before they close it. My goal is to jog one whole lap in lane 8 without stopping before June 25. Not much, but hey, I started from zero just 8 weeks ago!
Friday: Cardio: 50 mins Strength: No

Yeah, the class Hiker is taking sounds pretty awesome! I can't do push ups but I have noticed my arms and pectorals becoming more defined so that's good! Maybe I should give the ol' push ups one more try!? lol I've been slacking this week! I did watch a video on you tube I think it was called "The Evolution of The Pull Up"??? (It was directed toward men because one of the Men's Health fitness magazine guys was doing it but still it's good information!) I think the pull up is an amazing exercise because of all the muscles you can work and then the potential modifications you can add in to it. I have NEVER been able to do one.
As for the party BJ that sounds great! My neighbor's and I have been doing that lately. A few days ago one person came out with a bottle of wine and then another with champagne and soon the whole apartment complex came out. A couple guys brought out guitars and played some music. It was pretty fun!

Hi Nancy, yes at least at my gym they do call that interval training. It's suppose to burn more calories and help build muscle. I can't really say but it does seem like it's helping. I never thougth I would see me down with 5 days for strength but it is kind of addictive. Once you get past that first few weeks of revulsion .
Karels, I say give those push-ups another try. I can't do them well, but I do notice that they are getting better. Belive me I do not do the full correct push-up, I either do the girl thing which I hate or I do a regular one but can only go down part way. Pull ups sound like a great idea too. Us woman need to work on our upper body strength to avoid that flabby arm thing. Too late for me but I hope to keep it from getting worse .

Walked around the fenceline again today in 10 to 30 minute spurts, carrying lots of tools, with a few minutes off in between, some of it stretching barbed wire, for a total of 72 minutes. I guess I must enjoy this or I wouldn't do it so much. After a couple years, I've finally learned how to do it. The fence is near perfect now. And I sort of enjoy being in the woods alone.
Worked arm and shoulder muscles to failure---several times---using this fence stretcher gadget we have. This thing looks like it was invented in the 19th century. Don't they have any inventors working on tools like this?
So tonight I concentrate on all the other muscle groups for strength. And most signs of this cold are nearly gone. Hope to get back to a normal routine starting tomorrow.
Also had half a pizza, 1050 calories , for brunch. But I'll have to say all that grease stuck with me. Never got hungry for at least 6 hrs in spite of a lot of energy expended. So it's going to work out OK in the long run, as long as I don't eat any more stupid stuff tonight.
Will post back later on whether I actually did the strength (or not ).

Did the whole strength workout tonight. Took about 45 minutes. Feels good. I wish I had a Bo-Flex. Glad this week is over. It was a struggle.
