Cindy, do you notice any difference doing the Wii strength versus just doing the elliptical?  Do any muscles feel more "worked?"

Lisa, hope your Mr.Man can fix your bike.   Carrying it is good exercise, too.

MJ:

     GET BUSY ON STRENGTH!

Just do one area one day, like upper body.  Then do something else the next day. Then it doesn't seem like such a daunting task.   Actually this is what I start to do every time, and then I think, what the heck, let's just get it over with.

With Hiker doing Zumba and Lami doing Salsa, I guess I'll have to get out my old clogging notes and see if I can still do that.   Not very Latin though.  More like hillbilly (I can say that cause I am one).

Did the usual 4 laps around the track tonight, same time.  Was hoping for at least 1 minute faster.

BJ, you're going to run out of things to do soon, aren't you?   Come to my house and help me then.

HA HA!  And clogging! I thought that was more of a Swede thing?  I think of square dancing when I think "hill billy"  Which that's supposedly a fun workout too!
I've always wanted to learn Ballroom and Swing myself!  :P  had a lot of friends that learned swing back in high school.  I was jealous!  One of my friends was a highland dancer.  They don't get much credit for their competitions.  In fact they aren't even considered a sport competition!  Her trainer was so mad about that that she took pictures of each student and cut and pasted them over the Olympic winners on Wheaties cereal boxes!   It was great!  How many Olympians have you seen dance on swords?! lol

(Lilacs and flowering trees are in full bloom here.  Just picked some on my walk earlier and put them in vases in the window.  My house smells awesome!)

To be honest Nancy, I don't feel anything different with my muscles when doing the elliptical weight resistance stuff. I probably don't do it enough to tell a difference.

But, now the wii fit. I can most definitely tell with certain muscles that I am using, which I have not used before.

And if the dumb thing calls me a couch potato one more time, then I might just give it up altogether...

(whatever you decide that best fits) for Monday.

I'd sure rather you all (aka, y'all) just tell me, rather than me decide, honest.     But since you won't, I just split the difference (20 cardio, 20 strength).   The point is you surely got in both on Monday.   Good work.

Nancy, clog dancing? Do you actually wear cloggs, like regular cloggs? Hey it could be fun but I thought square dancing to a fiddle was more "hillbilly" style . What the heck, exercises is exercise might as well have fun if you can. Now if only there was a fun way to do the strength training.

MJ, I don't know if you belong to a gym or if there are any opportunities for a class but that is the only way I get my strength training in, I go to a stretch and tone class, it's basically 1/2 weights and 1/2 stretching. The class makes it seem so much easier...I think it's that old misery loves company thing. Also the stretching is pleasant so it's not all bad. If a class isn't possible maybe a tape? Believe me I am the last one to talk about doing your strength training...I hate it, I hate it , I hate it. That said the best we can do is find ways to make it a little more pleasant.

Nancy, how about I swap you 45 minutes of cardio for a short strength session, or even 90 minutes of cardio....I don't care if only I didn't have to do those darn weights, and I use little ones!

Naw, I took a 6 weeks course that met once a week a long time ago.  We were supposed to practice on our own in between.  Ha!   It was fun, but I never followed up on it.

And yes I'd like to swap!  Missed one day of cardio already this week and I'm afraid I'll not get it all in.  Supposed to rain today.  I have some one pound weights---yes, they make them that small.

All this talk about clogging. I know a little bit of it, thanks to one of my friends when I was kid. Her whole family did it. They were part of a group the went to different fairs and performed. It was fun.... My friend and I usually got to ride all the rides free since they were there performing there. So, we had a blast....

Hee hee lol....Nancy if we finish all things all this house within the next ten years..I am all yours!! I would love to see Georgia! This wall i partook of yesterday was the original wall that was the hollywood driveway. The owner made this place almost maze like, sidewalks to nowhere, the property is divided up with all this white metal fencing on the outside of the houses immed. yard....then you have the courtyard 3-4' stucco cinder block walls....they are all over!!! So, last summer we broke one big half arc of the very front (when i hurt my heel), landscaped there and then moved into the next arc that is along our front grass and porch.....its half way down now, and there is like a span of 5 feet of wall to a metal gate that goes to our front door...and that is where i am now. I want that silly gate gone, for it serves no purpose now. We want it more open whereas now its all broken apart and choppy. Lots of work cut out for us. Now, I am moving those blocks over to the driveway...which comes in and bends around to our garage, and of course more wall there.....but we are going to relay that wall and make it go out to our front gate that brings you into the driveway and close off the yard from the driveway...where now its just all open and viewable...oh, i wish i could show a picture, it would make more sense! I have my summer yard work cut out for me if i keep on the wall. I have a length of about 45' to clear out to open that yard totally and then those bricks will in turn move across the yard to close us from the driveway and road....its a long process..and it may take years....argh....

Our goal is green in all the desert brown, and now that the house is goin blue, its such an improvement...there was simply too much brown, brown house, brown walls, brown ground, etcetcetc.......

as for today, wt back up (not a surprise with the eating i did yesterday and my period showing up) i have a headache and dont know what i am goin to do today. Still dont know when mj will be home either...so i am kinda in this limbo trying to just let my head rest a bit.

I will report later as to what i do accomplish today. :) thanks for listening guys, i think i am a little down or lonely today...and i am happy you are all here for support....:) thanks a bunch!

Worked on wall demolition for 1.5 hours. Please put me down for 90 min strength and 90 min cardio for wednesday, i had my heart pumping really well while i was chipping away at stucco, bending and picking up the rubble dumping into a large 10 gal bucket, then carted 3 of those total to the other side of the house to serve as a rain runoff along our foundation. The cinder blocks, 7 total went to the far wall on the driveway our temp wall that is...I made it on the top layer to the gates lock, but that is all cement inside the block, so i cant get anywhere there....that is for d to do! The wall is 4 high with a topper on it so you know how much i am breaking down.. :) I think that will be enough for today, my arm is kinda shaky....its hard to hit away the wall at certain areas...and awkward but it feels good to slam that sledge hammer and see big pieces fall away. :)

I didn't really do much today, kind of sore from that Zumba class . For Wednesday 35 minutes cardio, no strength training.

Nancy, what do you mean 1 lb weights....I have 1/2 lb weights . Actually I do, I use them for some wrist exercises my physical therapist recommended. For my actual "work out" I use 5 and 10 pound weights, nothing more than that though...I can barely do them.

Hi Everyone

Did 1 hour Salsa tonight, was busy, busy, busy all day at work and then had to go food shopping at night!!!

I know, no excuses but I did know I was going to Salsa and thought I'd give my body a wee rest from the running.

Clog dancing sounds fab the noise alone would be worth hearing with everyone going in time........what's a Hillbilly? Is it a derogatory name for someone who lives in the county?

Yes, folks from the Appalachian or Ozark mountains area of the US.  All four of my grandparents and my father, were born in West Virginia---very hilly state.   They used to use the term about themselves all the time.   I probably shouldn't have said it.  Oops.

Hahaha I really needed that... Hiker, I have NO excuse for skipping the strength stuff.  I own hand weights and have both the core secrets DVD and a Leslie Sansone DVD that incorporate the strength training... if I really want my butt kicked, I can do a Jillian/Biggest Loser DVD... or a Bob one... I have all the tools and none of the motivation.  So, off to take care of that for tonight.  No excuse.

Yesterday's cardio was 42 minutes on the treadmill, a combo walk/jog (3 miles).  I will be back to post once I actually do something for today!

OK, OK... I did it!  Thanks for the push ladies.  I did 21 minutes Leslie Sansone stability ball for core/upper body workout, and 8 minute abs dvd... so there's my strength for the day.  Never would have done it without this challenge and the prompts... literally never would have done it...

I used to have these cool arm / ankle weights you could wear while working out or walking around.   They vanished once during a move...

Did my 3 mile - 2 hours total - walk (6 miles round trip) to the gym today and then did 15 mins intense strength training.

And now I feel like I have a head cold coming on. I think that is what the headache was from.  It was a sort of sinus head ache and then a few days later I had a really stiff neck.  I talked to my dad on the phone a few days ago (he lives about 2 hours north of me) and he was fighting some kind of head cold.  This reminds me of those degrees of separation games...  How many people between me and my dad getting his cold a few days prior to me...?  My boyfriend's little sister picked up a head cold from school and her parents are freaking out acting like she has swine flu.  I supposed it's better to over estimate than underestimate!  So far I just feel a bit warm and achy around the eyes and my ears and nose are a bit plugged up.

I've been drinking teas, doing inhalations to clear my sinuses, and taking my vitamins.  Just have to ride it out! :sad:

Good job, MJ.  I knew you could do it.:ribbon:

Did a good strength workout tonight---all major muscle groups.  Those resistance bands are neat for arm and shoulder strength because you can go in so many different directions with them.

Dark thunderstorm clouds were hovering all evening so I didn't get out to the track.   Missed 2 days cardio this week already, so pressure is building.   I have to do something every day for the rest of the week.

May 6:  Cardio: none  Strength: Yes

Ok, put me down for 85mins cardio~ wed.

I did my bike two different times for about 20mins each, then I did the elliptical last night cause it was raining and I couldn't get out for my walk.

Boy, I sure could tell that I haven't done the elliptical for awhile, I sweating like crazy.

MJ, now you've put me to shame....I skipped my strength class, I had an appt and really couldn't go, of course there were several other classes I could have gone to but since they weren't "my" class I didn't. Now I have to make up for it since you were so good. I will hop into a class that uses weights today. I belong to a gym that is less than 5 minutes from my house, I to have no excuse. Unless the fact that I would rather, walk, dance and even jump rope is an excuse .

Did my workout early today.  I took the day off to help a friend w/ funeral things... her grandma's service is today and she is hosting the gathering after, so I will get food out, keep things organized and clean, and help babysit the little ones who can't attend the service.  Wanted to take advantage of a litle free time and center myself before the day gets rolling.

Did 55 minutes on the treadmill- 4 miles of walking w/ incline alternating w/ jogging.  ALSO did 20 minutes pilates- so strength training TWO days in a row. Definitely wouldn't have done that if my lovely friends didn't call me out (gently of course!).  Thanks everyone!

Ok so I'm super stupid!  I am going through the Curves/Avon fitness study web site and it is asking me how many times a week I am going to Curves to work out and I thought it was a 15 mins routine but it is saying it's a 30 mins routine!  I never did watch the clock really while there.  The fitness trainer ladies have been doing that while they follow me around and show me how to do stuff properly.  I am such a dork!  So I guess for yesterday and Monday add 15 more mins to the Strength parts.

Just a 30 min walk for today and I am off to do house work!  I swear dishes and laundry are a seriously ongoing battle!  Especially when there's no machines around!

On the plus side this cold seems to be getting better!  My boyfriend was having the symptoms for about 3 days and it was gone!  Good thing too because I was so worried it was going to drag me down and keep me from going to the gym!  :dizzy:

You guys sound sooo busy!  I found out there is a Women's Build Habitat for Humanity project starting in my neighborhood on the 9th and I am going to try to go help out and volunteer with that!  :)
So then I can be busy doing house construction stuff too!  lol

I would love to join Habitat for Humanity.    If you decide to do it, let us know what it's like.    But it seems like there is always something to fix on my house.     That's what I get for buying an old house.   At the time I thought it had a lot of "character."  Ha!

And Nancy, Old houses do have great character.  If their were built right to begin with they will outlive their residents by 10 fold or more!  Then again a lot of older houses can also need a LOT of TLC.  It takes money, creativity and determination to get one of those back in shape.  I had a few old magazine articles from a few years back that was about old farm house restoration and renovation.  It was really neat to see the extreme changes that took place between the before, during, and after photos!  I sort of wish I could do that just for kicks!

My grandma used to make those braid rugs from old t-shirt scraps and stuff all of the time.  I thought they were pretty neat... or maybe I'm just silly?  I was wondering how to make them.. Figured it would be a fun thing to try some time anyway...

Karels, I never made them but my brother and his wife did many years ago and the rug is now a family heirloom with lots of great memories of whose shirt that was, what they were doing when the wore it etc. I say go for it if you have the time, it did take them months to make but it is worth it.

I have a crazy day today so I will post mine exercise for Friday now since I know all I am going to go is get a class in. Cardio 30 minutes and yes for strength. Gotta go to fit that class in now.

To all of you who are moms, Happy Mothers Day.

I got rid of junk, moved all the gardening stuff around and organized...you know for all the space we have....we have stuff just sitting in piles in our garage.....isnt that wierd?:dizzy: anyway...so i did that, and watered the yards and weeded along the front of the house, edged the yard you would say since we cant get around those areas with the mower. Please put me down for 50min of cardio for Friday, no real strength today, just used my whole body! :)

mj went with dad for the nite. he even called d for ok from him to take her and have her back tomorrow nite, so that we can be with her for moms day. cross your fingers that it all goes as dad said it will!

To and from the track and 4 laps, again tonight.  This time it took 1 minute longer!  Must have dawdled walking back because I can finally see an improvement jogging on the track.   The one reason I like doing the track (well maybe like is not the word), is that it is exactly the same every time, so I can more easily see improvements.

Two more cardio sets to go!  And I'd like to get in another strength set before this week is over.   If I write it down here, I'm more likely to do it.

Friday: Cardio: 39 mins, Strength: none

Today our weather report said :blowing dust: .....lol......and how true it is!!! Last nite the wind started blowing soo hard, the windchimes were hitting the house, and the dogs next door were barking all nite.....it was a long nite...so i dont know if i will do a whole lot today. Okay, so yesterday I was so beat I got home, did some house work and fell asleep!

Friday: 11 mile walk!  (6 miles total to and from gym and 5 miles total to and from the Habitat for Humanity office!)  A total of about 3 hours walking.  And I also did my 30 minute strength routine at Curves.  (I made sure to watch the clock this time!)

Saturday:  Some walking and some hard hiking (see below)  Probably a total of 1 hour.  And then 7 hours of construction work (I would say it stands in for strength training!)

I got up early to walk to the bus stop and then took the bus out to the Habitat for Humanities Build site.  The only issue was I got off the bus too soon and then headed the WRONG WAY up a VERY, VERY, VERY steep hill... more like a cliff side! The ONLY other time I have EVER seen streets like this was when I was in San Fran!  The view was amazing though....  Then I headed down and UP the OTHER side....  I found the right street that time!  LOL!

From 8 am until 3 pm I helped our crew put together and erect the first set of outer walls on one of the homes.  It was a ton of fun!  Everyone was having a great time!  There was 3 different groups there today: Women Build Team, a mixed religions groups (Jewish, Muslim, Christians, etc.),  and a JROTC group of teens from a local middle school.  There was people there from all sorts of countries who came to America searching for the "American Dream" and others who were fleeing war, and some from right here in America who had been in tough situations and homeless before.  It was certainly an amazing sight to stand back and take it all in and then realize you are one of these people!

The build site is on a culd-de-sac with about 10 or 12 houses.  Of which 1 is finished and two more are nearly done.  The rest of the homes only have the 1st story framing up so far.

There is radiant heat flooring (very efficient), low flow water saving toilets, and on demand hot water (so no more wasting electricity or having showers go cold!)  There's much more eco-friendly stuff going into the homes and they look great.  They purposefully worked with a planner to make the houses NOT look cookie cutter style.  Which I think is great because most of the suburbs in this area look all the same!  It's so boring!

Another plus besides all of this!  The families who have been awarded the chance to purchase these homes (20 out of about 250 applicants a year, at no interest, and pay no more than 30% of their income for 30 years) are there working right beside all of us who have volunteered!  So all of the residence are working together with the volunteers on their very own street!  Something to surely form a safe tight-nit community between the families!

Oh yes, and I have a sun burn...

Lisa, that sounds like so much fun!  All women?  I'm really glad to hear what it's like from someone who actually tried it.   If I didn't have my mother's farm to look after I would join.   I enjoy hard work when there is a purpose.

Do they let you help out for just one day, or do they ask you to sign up for an extended period?

Another trip to the track and 4 laps tonight.  Warmed up before I left the house so a bit longer distance tonight.   One more cardio to go.   Think I'll do the aerobics tape tomorrow night and give the knees a rest.

Saturday: Cardio: 39 mins,  Strength: none so far

Hey, I just read on the ACSM (Amer College of Sports Medicine) and HHS websites that the cardio for the guidelines does not have to be continuous for 30 minutes, but can be broken into 10 or 15 minute segments throughout the day.

Of course that is probably only helpful to me, because I'm the slacker when it comes to that.

They let you sign up and keep you on file.  If you plan on showing up you can call ahead and let them know.  Sometimes they may have TOO MUCH help on site so they will turn people down.

They are also located in about 90 countries now (I think), along with local county/city chapters.  It's pretty neat!  You can go weekly, monthly, or they have options to travel and do a year or so (not sure, but it may be in cooperation with Americorps for the long term and travel stuff).  The long term people get monthly stipends to live on and you are housed with others like you.  (sort of like college dorm housing)  I thought about doing it a while back but it would not be enough to live on for me.  Too many bills to pay off!

There was men in some of the other groups working on other houses.  The chief foreman was a man (Nick) but he played along and let us call him "Nicky" or "Nicole".  It's funny too because he's this short stocky Hispanic / Hawaiian native looking guy with long black hair and a goatee so it was great to see a manly man getting along with a crew of women so well.  lol  Most of the construction sites I have been on the men generally act superior to the women so it's pretty tough.  Even for my generation.  :/

I had to watch my mom go through discrimination when I was younger.  Men would do cat calls at work, grab her butt, tell her that she couldn't do a "male" job.  She did prove them wrong and earn their respect though.  It was hard because of the way she was treated and the fact that some of the only places to work where we lived were places like lumber mills, ship yards, ranches and what not.  Mostly male dominated careers.

It's getting better but it'll take more time before women are fully accepted in these sorts of places.  The very last real job I had was doing welding, plumbing and pipe fitting and I was the only female on my crew.  The other new person besides me was a guy few years younger than me.  They treated him like he was a genius and treated me like I was a moron.  Pretty much I was made to do the most extreme hard, mundane tasks that no one else wanted to really do.  They tried to tell me to move 25 foot 5" cast iron pipes up to the site from the stock pile by myself!  When I refused the foreman threw his arms in the air and walked off claiming "they weren't that heavy"... I'm sorry I own cast iron cookware... I know it weighs a lot!  Eventually one of the journeymen (who was also one of the welding instructors for the program I was in) became my work buddy and helped me work on stuff.  He told me to try and not to let it get to me and that the best workers he has ever seen are women.   They are normally precise in their work, willing to admit when they are wrong and willing to learn the right way to doing stuff.

Karels.le, it sounds like you have an interseting job and have learned to work around the problems, good for you. We need more woman like you in the world!

Today it was a hike with the dogs, pretty tough one, not long but very hilly and rocky. Sunday, 1 hour cardio. No strength.

If you're hinting about a swap, then do double cardio today and it's a deal!

LOL, I would love to swap, unfortunatley I don't think either one of us would benefit.

For today, Tuesday 120 minutes cardio, no strength.

today was a slow day, just came down from the weekend i suppose. went to walmart for about an hour, pushed dog food and kid and groceries and ran back to the car with the loaded cart, i make point to park up on the end of the lot for the extra walk.. :) then i watered side and back yard, scooped the poo out in the field after not doing it for 2 days and just rested today.

Light cardio for 25 min today. No strength.

Had an "almost fall" on sunday when parents brought mj back, what a disaster that whole visit was. they were 2.5hours late, no call no email to let me know. D was very unhappy because he told me that would happen and i held out that they wouldnt be late...they also took her out with gramma, which was another request that i had asked of them. Being back on time and not seeing my gramma were all that i asked of them. They went around both things and we only found out by mj telling us that nite at dinner. So, in that time, dad had stacked up toys for mj, her backpack and a container to bring into the house ( only he got waylayed handling the dogs in the back of his truck and left it all there )  on the door stoop at the back door that we use most of the time.....i opened the door and stepped right onto that container that was a round bowl and i smacked myself between the door with my feet and the jam of the door was how i held on, thereby ripping my thumb open in two places, bruising my index finger, bruised my left foot and my rt leg. What a mess. So, I wont be doing any real strength this week, i am kinda having trouble just with thing like writing, eating, etc....what a drag. And for what? letting mj go to my parents house. I wont ever learn.:nono:

Ok, sorry about that, but i needed to get it off my chest.:dizzy: My dad wrote a note like its any other day and i read it and just lost my gusto for today because he isnt even sorry for being late, not doing what he told d he would do, having her back by 2-4pm etc...ugh. i have tried really hard not to eat today. I had 3 choco chip cookies today. :(

I guess it could have been worse! :)

Thanks for listening. Tomorrow I will be back on track. I need my motivation back and my rt hand! ARGH!
