I understand it's much, much harder to cycle on a real bike than on a stationary bike. If you're a diehard biker and know what's a good amount, feel free to co-host this challenge. I myself cycle in my basement for exercise, so I'm more familiar with this method.
For scoring, you keep track of your daily hours and miles cycled somewhere and once a week (I do this on sundays, you can do whatever day you'd like) total it up and divide it for one final MPH score. Some people like to cycle for shorter amounts of time at a higher intensity than those who cycle for much longer amounts at a lower intensity. I think this should make for even ground during the final results. I'm the first to admit that the math-oriented portion of my brain is severely shrunken, though
As an example, here are my past two weeks:
Last week
173.7 miles
7.85 hours
——————
22.13 mph
This week
107.7 miles
5.2 hours
——————
20.71 mph
Commence!
Or...more likely...correct my oversights!

Actually, yes, this is kind of stupid. If you do one session of 22.3 miles in one hour, you'll get the same score as someone who did the exact same session seven days in a row. Hmm. I'll have to think about this for a while.
Maybe we should shift the challenge's focus so that, week to week, you increase your intensity ("score") by just a little bit. I'm easily discouraged myself, I know how easy it is to get burned out and frustrated. I'm thinking increases of 0.1, that's progress, and maintaining is also very good. As for the metric system that uses kmh, I don't know what your weekly goal would be since I can't figure out conversions very well especially at 11 pm. Yes, I'm a typical American, haha.

I hope it's on a stationary bike, else you would get quite dizzy!

I cycle a good bit when I'm not running as much. I have both an outdoor and indoor bike. I love biking outdoors, but I don't get much sleep and fear having an accident. You've been getting some mileage in!! Great job!! Cycling is an awesome way to get in shape b/c you can get your heart rate up w/low resistance. Running, unfortuneately, is very high impact.
Keep it up!!

If you still want to do this, then you could do it by distance alone. Of course, that would pretty much apply to stationary bikes only. The distance you see on the bike is typically a combination of both resistance and speed, so total distance is a pretty accurate overall measurement.

| I wouldn't mind doing a challenge like this, but I don't have a bike at home. Just the outside kind. So, if you think of something to keep track of miles for that, I would be in. So far, alls I have heard about is those fancy bike computers and I can't afford that. Maybe you should just do it for stationary bikes.

I am not much of a biker but I am always up for cardio challenges as I get lazy and lose motivation to work out/ Hopefully you'll get this figured out and I will join!
I have a recumbunant bike at home, would that work? Or then also a real outside bike

I got a really nice odometer from a bike store for less than $50. It tracks pretty much everything. If that isn't in the budget, try driving your car along your bike routes - then you'll know how far it is. Kinda dorky, but I did this when I was running every day. I even wrote down landmarks at every mile. Hope that helps.

I think we should have a set time and post how far we bike in that time.

How about MPH?

| I suppose we could start a weekly log of how far we go and our average speed. It'll work itself out in the end.

| I am going to bike for 30 minutes. I know I should do more but I am so out of shape and on a stationary bike, anything more, I am just too bored. And I will post the distance I go in 30 minutes.

I'm thinking Monday is as good a day as any to start a challenge week, since Monday is right after the weekend when some people "blow it" and when most people resolve to do better. Plus, it gives you a guideline of how much to do each day to reach the weekly goal.
Wed: 60 minutes, 24.7 miles
Fri: 60 minutes, 25.9
Sun: 60 minutes, 25 miles
Bottom line: 3 hours, 75.6 miles (really pushing myself this week. well, when I bother doing it at all, I mean )

Wow, Ash, you definitely are pushing yourself pretty hard! That's awesome. :)
Do you average about 300 watts?
I used to do the bike for 60 minutes, but wow, I got tired. I did on average between 20-21 in 60 minutes. I would have already keeled over doing what you do. :D

Well I am late on here as well, but I have a recumbant bike, which I love! For 2 month now I do 8 to 9 km which converts to 5 miles...and I do it at 28 mph. I do it while watching my afternoon soap, and durning commercials I kick it up a notch. Can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 20 to get my 5 miles in. I think 5 miles a day is quite a bit. When I first got the bike I too was doing 22km a day, but that is ridiculous for me, as I walk everywhere I go(dont know how to drive) plus I chase after two kids durning the day. It doesnt sound like you have many in on the challenge yet, but when you do I will join in with bells on!!

Well, since I am big into biking lately, I am going to revive this challenge and post all of my biking that I do daily (or try to do daily). I want to see what I am actually putting in for time/miles. If anyone wants to join me feel free!! I will challenge others to do more than I do or keep up with me (which really shouldn't be that hard since I'm such a rookie with a cheap bike!)

I'm not for indoor cycling at all it isnt the same. The fear of getting smashed or wrecking makes outdoor so much more fun. Also I'm not a roadbiker !!!! I'm an avid MTB rider an avg 45-60 miles a week. Which from what people say that many miles on mtb is like double that on a road bike. So bring on a challenge I'm up for it

Depends on what kinda riding you want to do. Mountain bikes are so much more fun to me then a road bike but everyone is different. There are so many models that are good for off road and street riding. Plus they are more comfortable then a road bike Try craig's list for starters and post a link so I can check it out to see if it is worth it. . You want to avoid anything from places such as WAL MART TARGET K MART. They may be cheap but they turds. You can get an older model bike that is better then anything from those stores. Also riding in the rain is so much fun on a MTB. You can get real intense workout by doing this. All the extra effort you have to deal with wind , rain and mud

Well I rode night instead since my fried flaked on my Saturday. I rode 13 miles in 32 min with avg speed of 15.6 mph. I'm riding tonight with a long time riding partner. I'm sure we will do min of 15 miles but most likely end up doing over 20 miles. So come people get on that rusty old bike of yours and hit the road or trail

Oh hi guys I'm surprised people are still posting here. I think this forum will give me some accountability, which is what I need. You guys will "see" me every day; there's virtually no chance I'll run into real life enemies, therefore that reason to work out is a bust. I keep doing three days of exercise followed by two or three of nothing...I'm the biggest excuse-maker. Hopefully I'll get back on track tonight or tomorrow.

Monday:
30 mins programmed trainer, 9.20 miles; 30 mins new intervals, 9.65 miles.
It seems I make up new intervals at least twice a week. That'll prevent plateaus, right?
Tuesday:
30 mins programmed trainer, 9.14 miles; 30 mins new intervals, 9.76 miles.
Wednesday:
30 mins programemd trainer, 9.69 miles; 30 mins new intervals, 9.81 miles.
Thursday:
2 hours freestyle recumbent, 44.6 miles.

Ok, I want to join this challenge since I have a bike now. YEAH! I have spent about 3hrs on it so far this week. But, I don't know how many miles. So, I will start to keep track of that.
I'm excited! This will be fun...
My goal is that on Monday- I will start doing a couple of hours on it a day. So, we will see if I can keep that up or not...

I'm bummed cause I haven't been able to ride at all for over a month now . My knee is hurting to much to even attempt to ride. I'm hoping the surgeon can give me some news that will get rid of my pain. I'm tired of pain so I hope something good will come out having 1 possible 2 more surgery's . My knee feels like it did when I first had my pain arise 3 yrs ago. I'm averaging on scale of 1-10 a 5-6 on days I don't work out and days I do 7-8

Hang in there hellrazor, maybe you can do some sort of other exercise. I know that I didn't want to do that after my feet problems. But, it has really been fun trying new stuff and the bonus, my feet don't hurt anymore.
So, talk to your doctor and see if there is something that can work for you.
Also, I know what you mean about the calories and working out. Usually I workout so much that I can eat what I want. But, with the holidays, it's been hard and slacking off the exercise. I need to adjust my calories for the days I don't work out and it's fricking hard....

Well with my knee there isn't anything else I can really do. I can't do any impact stuff , to cold to walk ( wheres the rush in that ), to cold to swim even with heated pool at the gym. So I'm sticking to cardio stuff at the gym just not the same. Thanks for the encouragement cport

Ok, here's what I am doing. I do one hour on the bike a day. If I forget to look and see what the mileage is then I give myself 9miles. I usually average more then that.
So, here was last weeks total
7hours- 68.40 miles-one day I forgot to look
So, my goal is to get that over 70miles. Then of course I will go for more but that is the plan for now...
I don't know if anyone else is doing this challenge at the time, but I am. So, hope no one minds me posting my totals in here....

I will be back in action as soon as I get a new bike which will be in the next couple weeks. I will start out kinda slow maybe 35-50 miles for a couple weeks and then work back up to 80-90 miles a week

Ok, this is what I did this week...
6 1/2 hours at 68.17 miles
I did forget to log one day, so I gave myself the standard 9miles, but I usually average over 10miles in an hour.
Ok, So I did almost the same in miles but cut my time down a little bit.
So, next week I am going to keep better track by logging my minutes and miles. I want to get in 70miles next week in the same amount of time....
I really owe it to this challenge. It is the reason I keep pushing myself to go faster and longer....

Well I know in my town it is against the law to ride on the sidewalk. Riding on the sidewalk would mean having to stop for people walking. If people that drive would learn how to drive when they see a biker that would be a start. Most ride behind the rider instead just passing by them on the left. I don't know how many times I have almost been hit by some stupid driver that was to scared to pass me

Yea, I don't think anybody is suppose to ride their bikes on a sidewalk. I think it might be different if it's a walking trail or something like that. But, regular sidewalks are for the pedestrians.
I don't know why that person would come into a cycling challenge and complain, that's just starting trouble.

Ok, not so well this week.
I did about 5 1/2 hours with about 60miles.
So, that was about 10miles short of where I wanted to be. It was all because I didn't ride much yesterday.
So, going to try to put in a few more miles a day, so then if I want to skip a day it won't matter so much on my totals for the week. I don't know, that is the plan for now anyway.
I took two days off this last week cause I pulled a muscle on the elliptical. Now, that it's all better, I hoping to get in some more on the bike and elliptical.
Ok, so that's the plan for this coming week.

This challenge is ending for me right now. I started my chantix today and until I feel under control with the smoking thing, I won't be posting.
I probably will still be riding my bike, but only when I want to. So, not pushing myself at anything right now. Just trying to get through this.
Talk to you all when I get back.

I am new here, but do have a stationery bike in my basement that I do not use often enough. I get bored. I think I will bring it back upstairs to ride while I watch my soap opera at 12:30 PM. I will be able to put in an hour each weekday doing this.
I currently weigh 167 lbs. (down from 186 lbs.), but my goal weight is at least 150 lbs. Since I am out of shape, I will get started working my heart rate up and loosening my joints until the official challenge begins. I need all the motivation I can get!
