I understand it's much, much harder to cycle on a real bike than on a stationary bike. If you're a diehard biker and know what's a good amount, feel free to co-host this challenge. I myself cycle in my basement for exercise, so I'm more familiar with this method.
For scoring, you keep track of your daily hours and miles cycled somewhere and once a week (I do this on sundays, you can do whatever day you'd like) total it up and divide it for one final MPH score. Some people like to cycle for shorter amounts of time at a higher intensity than those who cycle for much longer amounts at a lower intensity. I think this should make for even ground during the final results. I'm the first to admit that the math-oriented portion of my brain is severely shrunken, though
As an example, here are my past two weeks:
Last week
173.7 miles
7.85 hours
——————
22.13 mph
This week
107.7 miles
5.2 hours
——————
20.71 mph
Commence!
Or...more likely...correct my oversights!

Actually, yes, this is kind of stupid. If you do one session of 22.3 miles in one hour, you'll get the same score as someone who did the exact same session seven days in a row. Hmm. I'll have to think about this for a while.
Maybe we should shift the challenge's focus so that, week to week, you increase your intensity ("score") by just a little bit. I'm easily discouraged myself, I know how easy it is to get burned out and frustrated. I'm thinking increases of 0.1, that's progress, and maintaining is also very good. As for the metric system that uses kmh, I don't know what your weekly goal would be since I can't figure out conversions very well especially at 11 pm. Yes, I'm a typical American, haha.

I hope it's on a stationary bike, else you would get quite dizzy!

I cycle a good bit when I'm not running as much. I have both an outdoor and indoor bike. I love biking outdoors, but I don't get much sleep and fear having an accident. You've been getting some mileage in!! Great job!! Cycling is an awesome way to get in shape b/c you can get your heart rate up w/low resistance. Running, unfortuneately, is very high impact.
Keep it up!!

If you still want to do this, then you could do it by distance alone. Of course, that would pretty much apply to stationary bikes only. The distance you see on the bike is typically a combination of both resistance and speed, so total distance is a pretty accurate overall measurement.

| I wouldn't mind doing a challenge like this, but I don't have a bike at home. Just the outside kind. So, if you think of something to keep track of miles for that, I would be in. So far, alls I have heard about is those fancy bike computers and I can't afford that. Maybe you should just do it for stationary bikes.

I am not much of a biker but I am always up for cardio challenges as I get lazy and lose motivation to work out/ Hopefully you'll get this figured out and I will join!
I have a recumbunant bike at home, would that work? Or then also a real outside bike

I got a really nice odometer from a bike store for less than $50. It tracks pretty much everything. If that isn't in the budget, try driving your car along your bike routes - then you'll know how far it is. Kinda dorky, but I did this when I was running every day. I even wrote down landmarks at every mile. Hope that helps.

are we going to get this challenge started?
I think we should have a set time and post how far we bike in that time.

| I suppose we could start a weekly log of how far we go and our average speed. It'll work itself out in the end.

| I am going to bike for 30 minutes. I know I should do more but I am so out of shape and on a stationary bike, anything more, I am just too bored. And I will post the distance I go in 30 minutes.

I'm thinking Monday is as good a day as any to start a challenge week, since Monday is right after the weekend when some people "blow it" and when most people resolve to do better. Plus, it gives you a guideline of how much to do each day to reach the weekly goal.
Wed: 60 minutes, 24.7 miles
Fri: 60 minutes, 25.9
Sun: 60 minutes, 25 miles
Bottom line: 3 hours, 75.6 miles (really pushing myself this week. well, when I bother doing it at all, I mean )

Wow, Ash, you definitely are pushing yourself pretty hard! That's awesome. :)
Do you average about 300 watts?
I used to do the bike for 60 minutes, but wow, I got tired. I did on average between 20-21 in 60 minutes. I would have already keeled over doing what you do. :D

Well I am late on here as well, but I have a recumbant bike, which I love! For 2 month now I do 8 to 9 km which converts to 5 miles...and I do it at 28 mph. I do it while watching my afternoon soap, and durning commercials I kick it up a notch. Can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 20 to get my 5 miles in. I think 5 miles a day is quite a bit. When I first got the bike I too was doing 22km a day, but that is ridiculous for me, as I walk everywhere I go(dont know how to drive) plus I chase after two kids durning the day. It doesnt sound like you have many in on the challenge yet, but when you do I will join in with bells on!!
