Hey artistjohn,
That's the spirit! Don't let them change your measurements. And for Heaven's sake, don't ever let them mess with the British pint!!! I love Bass! God save the Queen!

Hi Cathy M,
I feel your pain. I'm in education too and the semester is just starting. I'm on the same calorie intake as you and burning about the same in exercise. Things are hectic right now and I really have to take stock not only what I'm eating but how often. I have to plan my meals and make sure I snack healthy.
I know that women have water retention issues from time to time and that could be part of it. Check the sodium content in what you're eating. If you're going through a particular water cycle and the sodium is high and you're off a particular regiment with respect to eating schedule, this could all be contributing to the water gain. The good news is that it will change. Keep up the exercise and maybe even extend the cardio a bit. If nothing else this should help to releive some of the stress.
I have no concrete evidence but I believe that stress can have a marked effect on our metabolism. If our bodies are "worried" they may be holding on to whatever they can anticipating a starvation situation. It's plausible anyway.
Let me know when things change.

| Don't know really, but when I'm stressed or panicky, I have the opposite reaction! Could it be something like this? No time = pre-packaged meals = high sodium = water retention. Even so-called "diet" low fat shop bought meals are often packed full of salt. Just a possiblity or "food for thought" as I don't know what you eat.

| Thank you all! As I think back over the last two or three days - yep - what I've eaten has changed just enough to probably be a sodium issue. I take my lunch pretty much every day and eat at my desk (I know - bad habit - but I use the "lunchtime" that I save to get a quickie workout or a walk in - good habit). My usual lunch is lots of raw veggies, yogurt and a piece of fruit. But this week I have had: tuna one day, and a small piece of ham one day, instead of the yogurt. Duh - being sodium sensitive, I should know better. Thanks for making me think about it a little harder.

Greetings artistjohn,
I remember hearing about that ~ its been awhile, no? I'm trying to place a work event that would get me close to the time; I keep thinking 6-8 years?
We went through a phase in the US awhile back when metric was presented. There was a great deal of resistance also. We also have some products that are labled with liters and ounces but we've kept other units of measure the same.
With Peter's conversion table I can use the cookbook ~ so he's happy I am using it and I'm happy it is there. Life is good!
I could use your help though. I have an electric oven, so I don't understand the centigrade gas mark. Do you know how I could convert these?
190C/gas mark 5? 180C/gas mark 4? 200C/gas mark 6? 200C/gas mark 4? 220C/gas mark 7?
I would appreciate any help you might be able to give me.
Best regards,
Skinnieme

Hello everyone! I'm coming to the end of my 3 cheat days from doing the Weight Loss For Idiots Diet. I must say that I am very surprised that I have behaved so well! I thought I would want all the fatty, yummy things and that hasn't been the case. I've been very conscious of what I am eating and trying not to gain back any of the pounds that I lost during the 11 days. I lost a total of 6.6 pounds during the 11 days!! That's pretty amazing and it has really gotten me pumped up!
I'm looking forward to the end of the next 11 days to see how much more I've lost! My work schedule makes it really tough to get in a good workout, but I'm going to make the sacrifice of getting up early (4a - ugh) to be able to get the workout in the morning and be able to take care of my doggies too. I keep telling myself it will be worth it!! Hmmmmm....maybe I should make a recording of me telling myself this over and over and listen to it while sleeping!

I am down to 141 this morning. I started at 145.
I'm not sure where I will be tomorrow. My neighbor brought in some delicious and fatting soup and I couldn't hurt her feelings by not having a bowl

Am over the moon, lost 3lbs last week - see post, but I had to work jolly hard to get there! I've been using the food and calories burnt calculators scrupulously for a change and was amazed either how little I can eat of my favourite foods (cheese, bread, pasta) and drink (couple of glasses of wine after a day's work) or, alternatively, how much exercise I have to do with my largely sedentary lifestyle: I teach small classes part-time, am a student the other part, do a lot of sitting in front of my computer or with a book as well as sitting on trains and in cars. I can see how I managed to put the weight on in the last six months; now I have to work really hard to get it off. It's not a question of vanity either, although I don't like bursting out of my clothes. The main reason is that I have a very bad leg due to a nasty car crash a few years ago and it doesn't like extra weight piled up to carry around. I am now drinking fizzy water and very low-cal hot chocolate in the evening, experimenting with different teas and eating lots of fruit and veg. Luckily I don't have a sweet tooth, but I do miss the bread and cheese. Anyone else suffer from cheese cravings? What do you do? Thank you for the support you are all providing by being in the same boat! Do you all use the calculators? How do they change your eating (and drinking) patterns? Or do you just exercise like crazy? With my dicky leg I am a little limited, but I walk a lot and have started to go swimming again.

| No problem! It is kind of different, but this challenge has had so many participants, that they had to separate the weight loss and the chit chat... LOL. Though, I was enjoying the 1000 steps per day to the 10000 steps per day to the 10 million steps per day discussion... LOL. Good chuckle!

chinkiri,
Oh boy do I ever miss the cheese! And the . My excuse has always been that I don't drink milk, so I need the calcium in cheese. Ha! I use the calculators a lot and just knowing how many cals are in cheese is the biggest deterant. However, I am a long way from eliminating cheese from my diet. I still use it, but not on everything like I did before. Calorie budgeting at its best. Cottage cheese helps me too. Okay, so its not really CHEESE, but it takes care of the dairy and some of the cravings. Plus I can eat more and don't ingest nearly the amount of calories.

I was on the LA weightloss system for quite sometime..and did manage to lose weight. They highly recommended string cheese ( poly o ) it's not the greatest stuff in the world but..does quiet the craving a bit. I lost 23 pounds while on that diet I hope the nfo is useful.

I was concerned over my very, very slow wieght loss, plus I noticed that everything fits better, so I yesterday I weighed myself, as well as today. I am going to do this everyday for a week to see my fluctuations - which I am sure is water.
Sunday - 173.6
Monday - 176

Thank you vgreet, that's very supportive. For the moment I have just banned the cheese from my fridge and my shoppinglist. Hope to put it back on the menu in small doses though when I've got to my goal weight. Not much more now.
You've lost a huge amount of weight in a month, how did you do that?
Not sure if i know what string cheese is, donnalee, never seen it here in UK, but I'll look out for it!

Anybody losing motivation? I can't believe I did so well last week, yet, I feel like I am sabotaging myself... WHY?!
I can't understant it. I will lose 20 pounds, and then something happens that I go back to my old ways. I'll regain the 20 pounds and then more, that is how I got up to 295 pounds!
Do you think it is a psychological issue? Like, I've failed over and over and over again, so why not do it again this time? Or, I'm afraid of succeeding? I don't know! Anyone share my experience? Let me know how you deal with it. I've not been drinking my water, am eating more than I should, not making the right choices. I'd like to nip this in the bud before I gain back the little I've lost so far and then weigh over 300 pounds!

I understand fully..I do the same thing..ever since i quit smoking 3.5 years ago...I can't seem to get motivated enough to stick to anything. I lost 23 pounds through the L.A. weightloss system ( even though I did little and also alot to self sabotage) now i'm gaining it all back. I try hard to follow a diet and exercise program..I try hard to write everything down..but i'm so busy ..and so tired much of the time..that i end up forgetting to write things down etc. Plus..the minute the anxiety level goes up ( i no longer smoke) I'm grabbing somethign to eat. it's an awful roller coaster..and wish i could find the motivation i used to quit smoking..and now apply it to this weight loss issue. Im pulling out my hair over this much of the time..Yes..I feel it's definitely psychological. I 'm hoping that someway i can find something to inspire me..however..what i do in the meantime..Is grab hold of myself..forget about yesterday...and start all over again. That's most important..no matter what..just don't give up! Inspiration will come in time. I have to believe that.

I quit smoking, too!!!! July 11th of this year will be 8 years, but, who's counting... LOL! Maybe that has something to do with it. I was fat when I smoked, but I gained about 75 pounds in about 6 years and had a total hysterectomy Jan of 06 and gained about 30 MORE!!! Yikes!
I think that as smokers, we smoked for all kinds of reasons, but if we were stressed, we were smoking. And we can't stop eating, like we stop smoking, you know? I KNOW that exercise will ease stress and anxieties, but I don't have the motivation. You would think being this fat would be motivating enough. I think it is the failure thing in my head. I really LIKE to exercise, but it is starting the exercising that I dread. Now, I just found out my niece is getting married in June. I would love to be smaller than this circus freak size I am now. <sigh>

Hmm..June, not too far off but plenty of time to lose quite a bit! Maybe being we are both going through the same ordeal ( I'm also assuming we are probably close in age as well, and age is also detrimental) Maybe we can figure out somethign to challenge each other some how. I am coming up to a milestone birthday in July and i would like to be a good 40 pounds lighter. I"m certainly up for any suggestions

HELP!
Hi JJodii,
I've been trying to lose weight for years. I'd lose 30 or 40 and put it back on again. I've done this about 3 times over the last 25 years. If you look up yo-yo diet in the dictionary you'll see my pic there.
The last time I lost weight I went on the Atkins diet. It worked but it was very hard to maintain and I gained what I lost plus! I was just shy of 300 lbs when I started again in July.
We all have our demons; those things that break our will power or trigger us to eat. For me it can be something as easy as watching a TV commercial for some restaurant or sausage bisquits. I try to sit and begin to analyze why I'm getting this craving. What am I doing at this moment? Why do I want to eat? Is this really going to satisfy me? What will I feel like after? Etc. If I still want something after a half hour I'll go and get it but I'll try to kill the urge with something healthy.
The other thing is my overall motivation for losing weight in the first place. In the past I always had the attitude that this was something I was doing for me. Over the years I've come to realize that, while this is important, I need to be healthy to be around for my wife, my children and grandchildren. It's not all about me. They are my motivation. They keep me focused.
Lastly, I know that I'm not always as strong as I'd like to be. What strength I do have comes from the Lord. I don't know where you are with respect to religious faith Jjodii and it's none of my business. For me there is a spritual component as well as physical and psychological components. I know and have known, what I have to do to lose weight the right way and keep it off. Doing it was another matter. Kinda like golf; I know what to do but I can't do it. You should see my game. I couldn't get motivated to lose this weight even though I had the knowledge. I really had to surrender to the Lord and ask for His strength and guidance for this because I knew I couldn't do it! He's helped me and He's still helping me. I have faith that He will get me to my goal, help me to stay motivated and help me to maintain. This is a life-long battle so don't beat yourself up and feel guilty if you go off once and a while. As long as the trend is down, you're doing great.
Sorry this was so long but I truly understand where you are.
Have a great weekend and stay strong!

Thanks, Bert!
I'm a total Christian. I cried out to the Lord on several occasions and this last time, I admitted I am absolutely powerless without Him, "especially" conserning the food issue! I think that was a huge turning point for me.
Yeah, and I'm with you on the "I know HOW to lose weight...", I just don't DO it! LOL. My poor mom worries about me. As she has every right. My parents are not obese, me and my husband are, and I don't want to pass this tradition down to my kiddo's. They see us struggle. I want to live to see them grown and established, I want to see grandchildren, I've got a lot to offer and can't do that if I die of obesity.
I'm remotivated. I've done well today. I think if I'm having a dark time, I just need to reach out for help. Weekends are easy for me in that I work weekends, two 12 hour shifts. I pack my dry cereal for breakfast and take 3 pieces of fruit and yogert for snacks then for lunch I ususally get a 1/4 of a rotissere chicken w/ salad. By the time I get home, I have a decent supper and off to bed. I'm on my feet about 10 of the 12 hours running around, so I'm sure I'm burning lots of calories.
Thanks again for your reply, I will have to be sure to ask myself those questions. I think that is key, not to absent mindedly eat. That's good, Bert!!!

Let me ask you something. What brand yogurt do you eat? I eat Dannon Light and Fit and it's only 60 calories. I also take it that you're removing the skin from the chicken you mention. Are you eating light or dark meat? I love the dark but I know it has more calories than the light.
Hang in and keep the faith!

My yogert is not as great as yours. LOL. I have made progress, though...
I traded my 3 breakfast tacos, (ususally bacon and egg or potato and egg or sausage and egg) for the cereal and yogert. My yogert is store brand, low fat and 110 calories.
Then lunch "used to" be a big, cheesy Mexican food plate (Can you tell I'm in Texas?) Probably easily 900 calories that's including the chips and salsa. Now, it's my rotissere chicken and "No" (while hanging my head) I don't take off the skin and most of the time it is the dark meat... like 99.9% of the time. LOL OK, this weekend, I'll get the white meat, or remove the skin from the dark. Baby steps. Or, I could get the soup and salad. The soup is a vegatable beef. Pretty good.

Stop it!!! You're making me hungry!!!
I love all that stuff. My wife and I love Mexican but we try to make it ourselves at home to drop the calories.
Watch out for the Veg Beef soup. They often put a lot of fat from the beef in there. That's what makes it so tasty.
Progresso makes some soups that are pretty good. There's one that I think they call the light or lite version. Weight Watchers gives it 0 points. One can is two servings but the entire can is only 120 calories. Have that with a piece of whole grain bread and an apple for lunch and you'll be full. Don't forget the H2o.
Have a great weekend and stay strong. Your schedule sounds like you're a nurse. My sister-in-law is and works a schedule like your.
More next week. I'm going to head home soon and take my bride out for dinner.
Fish LOL!!!

Yup, nurse here.
I think that's a great idea. I did just buy about a dozen of those Progresso soups, sometimes we just like a light supper. I'll just take my soup, a piece of bread and an apple, and I should be fine and save me six bucks!!!
Have a great weekend!

My goal for this challenge was a pound a week, and I've met my goal of 184. I met it a few days ago but my weight jumps around so I always give it a few days. I've actually been 183.5 two of the last four days, higher on the others.
If you've read many of my posts this will sound like a "broken record." But the thing is, we spend a lifetime learning bad habits and putting on weight. Then we want to change all that overnight, get discouraged, and give up.
For me, it's a lifetime battle. But I'm much happier fighting it and weighing less than I would otherwise and being more healthy than I would otherwise.
As my little monkey always says, "Hang in there!"
