Hi all--

I just wanted to mention THE DIARY FORUM to all you newbies :) In it you can start a thread that is all about you for all your daily postings about food and exercise. I just saw how many people seem to be posting in this thread daily, and wanted to point that section out. Not to say that you CAN'T post HERE daily, just wanted to make sure everyone knew about that option. You might get more views from your CPH friends if they can find just your posts in one little spot...

Happy Thursday!

Hi!  I've been receiving newsletters for years, but never posted (don't have a lot of time).  But I would like to participate in the challenge.  I will be starting Nutri-system (please no negative comments about Nutri-system, I already spent the money) for the next 10 weeks, so you might consider me "cheating", but I would still appreciate all the support I can get!

Hi JennB

Thanks for the welcome

My current weight is 186 pounds.  My ultimate goal weight is 130.  I am 5' 5"

By the end of February I would like to lose 16 pounds and be at 170.  I would really like to be at 166 but I don't know if that is too much.

I am excited and determined about this challange and upcoming challanges.  I know it will take most if not all of 2008 to reach my goal of loosing 60 to 70 Lbs.  I weigh 208 right now.  I am keeping a fool log daily, this is one tool that helps me stay on track.

It's all scientific.  As long as you consume less than you burn, you'll be fine.

I've got a silly question! I know I need to eat less calories  that I burn, but is that calories I burn all day doing everything, or the calories I burn during my workouts/walking? I really didn't think that I burned so many calories while watching TV, or typing here on the computer, until I came to this site and I put it all in the activity counter. If I should be consume less than I burn ALL day, then I'm on the right track, but if it is just how many I burn working out or walking then I've gotta get to work!!! Can anyone tell me? Thanks!! MUAH!!!

So, step one is to calculate your BMR (basic metabolic rate...the number of calories needed to sustain the body at rest) with the following formula:

Women:
655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
And the total there is your BMR. Now on to Step 2 which is to Calculate your activity in.    * If you are sedentary: BMR x 20 percent

* If you are lightly active: BMR x 30 percent

* If you are moderately active (You exercise most days a weeek): BMR x 40 percent

* If you are very active (You exercise intensely on a daily basis or for prolonged periods) BMR x 50 percent

* If you are extra active (You do hard labor or are in athletic training) BMR x 60 percent

Now, add this number to your BMR
The result of this formula will be the number of calories you can eat every day and maintain the weight you care currently at.

In order to lose weight, you'll need to take in fewer calories than this result. As you lose weight, you can re-calculate the formula to assess your new BMR.

Now, it is healthier to cut back your calorie intake a little bit at a time. So, if you cut back 500 calories a day, you should lose about one pound per week. And exercise only helps with burning off calories.

Muddyoldgoat, congratulations on going from 175 to 153 since October!!  Can you tell me what kind of exercising and dieting you are doing?  I'm currently at 174 and want to get down to my ultimate goal of 145.  You did that weight loss in 3 months - that's awesome!  Any tips you can give would be appreciated.

As far as quitting smoking, I don't smoke, but my sister did and she tried the patch and everything, but the only thing that worked for her was the new drug Chantix that you have to get prescribed for you.  Just thought I'd let you know in case you have trouble with the patch.  Good luck with it - you will be much healthier without smoking!!!

P.S.  Does anyone know how to send a private message to someone?  I got one, but I don't know how to send one if I wanted to contact just one member.

Thanks - have a good day everyone - a new day!!

Hey!

My name is Danielle, I'm 15 years olds, 5'3, and 125.6 pounds. I don't feel comfortable in my body and I would like to lose 8-12 pounds before the last day of April! All healthy easy recipes, and great workouts would be greatly appreciated. My parents tend to buy a lot of packaged foods, like pizza pops and delicio pizza. So its hard for me to get all the fruits and veggies i need... I've tried to tell them, but its too costly they say! HELP!!?!?!

I would like to recommend Turbo Jam(work out video) to EVERYONE! With this video I lost 5 pounds in 3 weeks. I did it 3 times a week for 3 weeks, and I was able to eat all my favourite snacks at the same time. I am trying to cut chips out of my diet though, cause of all the fat, calories, sodium, and carbs they just aren't good for you. But they seriously are my biggest weakness! haha My goal is to indulge in them only once a month.

oh how i remeber trying to eat good when my mother shopped and cooked rather poorly.

drink a lot of water and listen to your body.  If you feel even close to full stop... put your fork down between each bite and don't eat in front of the TV.

keep up with the video's... I like 10 minute solution pilates...

good luck

Dani - I have a 15 year old daughter about your size, and I'll tell you what I tell her - your body will keep changing as you get older....keep everything in moderation...eat pizza pops (whatever they are) eat healthy foods (at school they must have a salad bar?) drink lots of water, drink soda now and then if you want,  be a kid and just STAY ACTIVE.  Don't get addicted to video games and potato chips as the only two important things in your life!  Walk to a friends house, ride bikes, rollerblade, swim, play sports.

Let us older folks worry about diets and exercise videos.....

Hi needs,

It's all calories you burn all day.  I think the RMR calculator can help you there.  Be careful though.  Often times we tend to underestimate how many calories we're actually taking in so we may not be burning what we think we are in relation to that.

Good luck!!

Hi Patricia,

Your goal is definitely doable.  I'm nearly down 55 lbs and I've been at it since July 16th.  It's a good slow and steady pace.  Your goal of 16 lbs for this challenge is the same as mine.  That's 2 lbs a week so you should be good.  Just keep watching the calories you take in vs. what you use.  Exercise each day if you can, making aerobics the big one.  Strength training is important too so you won't lose muscle and slow your metabolism down.

Good luck!!

I'm a couple days late, but I'd like to join in as well! I lost 97 pounds about a year ago, and have gained about 40 of it back by slacking off on the exercise and basically eating garbage. I figure this will help with accountability.

Looks like about 8 weeks until February 29th, so I'll go for two pounds per week, with a little extra (I'm sure some of my current weight is water/bloat since I haven't exercised in a few days):

Current weight: 247

February 29th Goal: 230

Good Luck everyone!

Hi Kostgard,

You're still 57 lbs to the good!  After losing 97, 40 should be a piece of cake.  Oops! Bad choice of words but you know what I mean.

You can do it!!!!

Happy Thursday People! How is everyone doing? I think we said Monday was our weigh in day? Weekends for me can be a splurge day if I am not careful! I am keeping a list of my food and emailing it in daily. I also have decided to mall walk 2X a week. In addition, I have decided to try a new veggie every week! I may need some help with that part. Come to think of it, I may need some help with all of this! So glad you are here with me!

OK-here we go...

Start weight 173.  (Down already from 202.5 in late August 2007)  I'm 5'3.

Goal for Feb 29: 161 realistically (159 would be awesome)  I've been averaging 1.5 per week.

Final goal weight: 135 (hopefully by the 4th of July.)

I've been sick (sinus infection) and haven't worked out in a week and probably won't be able to start again until next Monday so I've lost the entire 1st week.  UGH!!  So I'll need to step it up next week.

I am not trying to lose a lot of weight, but trying to change my body composition from fat to muscle.  My starting weight is 120 and I am trying to lose 6 pounds of fat and turn it into muscle, so maybe I will end up at about 116.  That will be my goal this time around.

Just to let you all know that this is my second night without that nastsy snack before bed that has been a real problem for me for many years.

I'm also back on my exercise routine, 3 days weight training and 3-4 days biking. Still can't fit the 5 days 30 minutes of aerobics in due to my schedule, but any exercising is better than none.

Good luck to us all and have a good evenning.

WOW!  I'm just back in town and jumped to the last page of this challenge.  I can't wait until I have time tomorrow to catch up and read all 16 pages of what the heck has been going on in this challenge.  Did Oprah send over her list of folks or what?  If so, then I should be working on commission to keep up with this....ha!

Florida was great.  There were a million folks at Disney, Sea World and the Kennedy Space Shuttle.

I hope we have lots of folks in this challenge.  Either that or a few very, very chatty ones.  16 pages.....I can't believe it.

More tomorrow.  In the meantime, keep posting.  This is going to be a fun challenge.

Hi DG

Welcome back, and wow do you have your work cut out for you.  I see lots of newbies out there, which is great.  I think that this is the first one to come up on the search in google when you look for a free diet web site, which is great.

Good Luck keeping up with this challenge.  Lots of people want to join.

Hey everyone
The challenge is off to a good start, Ive been exercising with Jillian Michaels dvds and i'm definitely feeling results in my muscles.  Hopefully those tired muscles will help burn some more calories!  I'm nervous my routine will be thrown off during the weekend, but hopefully i can get through it.

Good luck everyone!:glass_water:
