Hello everyone!
I'm brand new as of today. Well brand new on this forum, not a brand new body, but I would like one of those so I'd love to join the challenge. I've failed at everything else so I'm hoping with support I will do it.

Thanks, DeterminedGal. I know so much about weight loss, but when my emotions arise or I get tired, none of it matters. I hope this will help - maybe a late night blog will help me stay out of the kitchen! Plus, it helps to have people working on this with me instead of all my super-skinny friends.
Hello to this new group of people - I've never consistently blogged with this forum before so I hope to get to know all of you!

Hey, just wanted to comment that for me, it takes about 2 months of consistent exercise (at least 30 minutes 5x/week) before my body stops yelling at me for exercising and starts thanking me. Keep at the bike! I also find that in the winter, if I can get outside for a walk, run, ski, or whatever, at least 2-3x/week, I don't get cabin fever so bad, which is prevalent where I live in upstate NY.
Here's to our challenge!

Thanks so much for putting this CHALLENGE together. I enjoy reading the caloriesperhour newsletter and this is my first "forum"...New Year, New You, and now new to forums! Wow, how exciting. Anyway, I'm in and I am looking for friendly support, inspiration of new ideas to weight loss, and motivation to keep active to stay on track in the New Year! Hi Katie,
I have some suggestions that have been somewhat successful for me in the past when trying to avoid late night snacks.
Get some tooth whitening strips and put them on when you think you are going to raid the kitchen. Not only won't you be tempted to eat because the taste of tooth bleach/plastic does not make food appetizing, but your smile will be whiter. 
My other suggestion would be to drink a large glass of water and then check the time. Give yourself 20 minutes while you do something else to distract yourself and then see if you are still hungry.
Simple suggestions, but I hope they help.

| So how do we start? This challenge may be what I need after the holiday gain! I keep telling eveeryone that the cookies are for the kids, but no packages have been mailed. I am famous for being late, but this is ridiculous. But I still plan to make peanut butter fudge tomorrow. It ships well, you know...

Thanks for your tips. Great ideas! Yes, I need ideas about what to do to distract myself or to give myself a shot of will power. I will try to drink water and then give myself twenty minutes... and keep the jug of water and a glass in a different room!

Hello sandcastle dreaming,
I don't know about you, but I find the whole operation of cooking up really yummy sweets for the kids LETHAL!!!!
I just can't resist. After all, the cook must taste her work in order to find out if it's a success, right? Unfortunately, healthy, low sugar, low fat things don't seem to ship well or guarantee success/popularity with the kids.
As a remedy to the excesses of the Christmas season, does anyone have ideas about how to cook for the family without having to fear either rejection or weight gain? Or am I the one who is dreaming?

I am joining the challenge! We will have 2 months I see! I am diabetic and weight loss for me is slow sooooo I am pledging 5# per month for a total of 10# :) turtles finish too you know.. My plan is eliminating junque and shaving a few calories here and there! I will weigh and post on Mondays! Good luck to all of you in 2008

Two years ago, I lost 50 lbs. in 3 months. I kept it off for over a year and a half. In the last few months, I have gained 25 lbs. Thanks for setting up this challenge!
People were always asking me, "How did you lose all that weight?". My immediate response was always, "Excessive exercise and starvation." It was not true, but it did feel that way for a while. But it gets easier, even enjoyable!
Drink coffee, it serves as an appetite suppressant and as a diuretic. So that will help you eat less and lose excess water weight.
Eat a salad every night before dinner. (I always use creamy dressing. If I'm going to eat a salad every night, I'm going to enjoy it. :)
Put your water bottles in the freezer. Take one with you every day. It will thaw out throughout the day, giving you nice cold ice water all day long!
Eat popcorn if you're prone to snacking at night. You can eat the whole bag and have consumed less calories than if you had eaten 3 cookies.
Exercise. (I walked for an hour to an hour and a half every morning. About 4-5 miles. Once I was doing that every day, I really began to enjoy it. I had time to myself to think, to reflect. It relieved so much stress!)
Use the Food Calories Counter and the Calories Burned Calculator on this website. (I would start the day off by entering how many calories I burned by sleeping. Then I would already be ahead! Coffee, cereal, more coffee, still ahead.

Thanks wasn't sure how it worked as I've never been on one of these sites before! I do best with a chanllenge/competition so am hopeful for Jan and Feb. I've been reading the calorie per hour newsletters for over a year and find them helpful and encouraging but not enough on a moment to moment or craving to craving basis.

This is my first post to this forum and am so excited about getting back into the groove. I am a work at home mom so sometimes it is really hard to avoid the refrigerator. My son is graduating this year from high school and really want to make a good impression for him at graduation. I am hoping the added support of the forum will keep me motivated!

I used to run Cross Country and track in HS and College. Now I sit at a desk and program all day. I have never weighed more and been more tired. Time to change! I'm in. I just signed up at a gym and want to run a 1/2 marathon this year so this is a great place to start. Never dieted before (never had to) so I may be relying on all of you for advice as well! This challenge is a great idea! Thanks.

| I'm excited to get started. A little over seven years ago - just before I turned 40, I was about 60 pounds heavier than I am now. I was feeling funky and went to the doctor to find out I had high blood pressure, and triglycerides that were off the charts. With three kids at home, reality struck - I wanted to be around for them and it was time to do something! I joined Weight Watchers and lost 60 pounds, but better yet found a new passion - running and lifting weights. Well, seven years and a divorce later, after dropping an extra 15, I'm now in a happy relationship, and for some reason, happy = eating too much for me. I'm still working out, but my ability to eat like a linebacker has helped me find those 15 pounds that I had shed. So now - I'm looking to the challenge as a way to get the pig-out monster under control again.

Yes, I know what you mean. Most of my friends say to me, "it's because you have kids". But I've come to the conclusion that men are fattening: they try to win your heart by taking you out to restaurants, bringing you boxes of chocolates... and then come the babies! Well, now I can hardly get rid of the man (well not yet anyway LOL) and the kids probably won't leave until they're 18 to 35, so I'm giving up eating out, sweets, chocolates, wine, bread, cakes and biscuits.
Please tell more about what exercise you do. I'd like to take it up when the kids are back in school.

Hi Katie,
I try to vary my workout routine so I don't get too complacent. But basically, I do strength training - mixing up free weights and the machines- three days a week - about 30 minutes per session -sometimes longer, sometimes less. I do some sort of cardio exercise 4 - 6 days a week - usually 45 minutes but sometimes only 30 depending on how much strength training I've done and how much time I have. The cardio usually is a combination of treadmill, stairmaster and elliptical machine. Sometimes I stick to just one for the entire time, other times I'll divide my workout - 15 minutes on each machine.
In good weather, I'll skip the gym and take a run/walk or a long hike in the state park near us - it's very hilly here so you can get a pretty good workout on a 3 - 5 mile walk. I also play tennis once or twice a week - indoors this time of the year.
It sounds like I spend my entire life in the gym, but I work fulltime - luckily at a University where we have a workout facility, so, many times I can pop over on my lunch break, sometimes I go in extremely early(before work), but more often my work day just doesn't end until my workout is finished. My family is extremely supportive - my kids know that mom is a push-over when I've had my workout and I'm feeling pretty good!
So my advice is to start out slowly - and choose something that feels good. If you love walking - do it. I've found that if I have little time, if I can just get a brisk ten minute run or walk in, it makes a big difference. If you don't have 30 - 60 minutes in one big chunk that you can devote to exercise - find 10 minutes here and there throughout the day, and do mini-work-outs. Three of those, and you have burned a good number of calories for the day, and you will feel good about yourself at the end of the day.
I think the key to becoming a regular exerciser is understanding that it's not an option - it HAS to be part of your day, just like eating breakfast lunch and dinner.

Thank you so much for your helpful reply. You've got loads of good ideas. You're right about exercise needing to be like 3 meals a day. I do walk everywhere, but I am terrible about organising my time for other types of exercise, often using the kids or cooking meals as an excuse not to get it done. Now, I will try to do 15 or 20 minutes of a workout video, take a walk or do some yoga before each meal.
Now for my next question... how to drum up a supportive attitude from my family?
