I might not get any takers for this challenge... but here goes anyway!
I've decided to give up caffeine for the rest of July. This is going to be a challenge - so I decided to post here and see if anyone wants to join me.
For my own challenge at least, I'm eliminating regular coffee, regular sodas (I personally don't drink much anyway), and regular teas. I'm sticking with decaf versions.
Anyone else interested to see how you feel without caffeine??

Administrator's Note:
July? It's not over till the last person posts. I'm just joining now, August 5.

Go for it, Trim!
I did this several years ago..........just like you laid it out. Except I cut out all coffee, and then chose only sodas and tea without caffeine. I felt great! Especially, when I combined it with healthy eating and weight loss. I hadn't felt that great in years and years.
Unfortunately, I got back in the coffee habit this year..........and then started in on regular coffee again. Yeah, I know, BAD ME! It was such a busy year, with so many extra hours at work.........that I found myself falling asleep over my computer at work! So, I turned to regular coffee to help keep me awake.
I will be ready for this challenge by fall, when life slows down a little....and I can catch up on my sleep. I plan to de-caffeinate myself again!
I HOPE YOU GET LOTS OF TAKERS! WE NEED TO AIM FOR OPTIMUM HELP....and in my mind, eliminating caffeine is a big part of that!

Hey TrimB! I've been thinking about this for awhile now, so I'm in. Plus, I love a challenge! Plus, plus, I'm gaining weight in the September challenge, so I need something I can be better at. I keep hearing about caffeine being an appetite stimulant (as opposed to what I always thought it was, a suppressant). So, that being said...
Okay, I'm in. I had some today, so I'll start tomorrow. I can do this... Water and herb tea. I can do this. Green tea has caffeine right? Hmmm. I can do this.
I'm motivated by Hisgal saying that she felt so great when doing this. One less bad thing in my system is a benefit. Plus, I'm making a plan to quit smoking and coffee is supposed to make quitting harder, so here I go!
Thanks, good idea.

YAY, I got one taker!!
In some ways this might be an even harder challenge, because it seems so harmless to indulge in a cup of coffee. And in the grand scheme of things, it isn't so bad. BUT I agree with Hisgal... I'm already feeling alot better. More even energy and maybe even moods are improving.
Also, I probably am drinking more water. So that's good!
Great idea about the herbal tea, SNC. I do like to sip on something sometimes - especially if I'm feeling a little snacky but don't want to eat quite yet. I'll have to go get some of that.

Hi TrimB -
Of course, the subtitle to your challenge should be 'cut out most of the caffeine' - because even the decaff versions contain some of the stuff.
One caveat for long-term caffeine-heads who might be tempted by your challenge is that it's possible to experience an increase in headaches, sometimes of an intense nature. After all, it's a drug that you're coming down off, right?
And it's not for nothing that caffeine is an ingredient of many types of headache pill, so be warned!
'Twould seem a waste of time and energy to cut out caffeine, amplify your headaches, then nullify them with a shot of caffeine from your preferred brand of analgesic!
Just a thought....

PS - (I've taken to posting in instalments - an idea I've nicked from Nir)
I'd join your challenge myself, but I only have an occasional full-caffeine infusion. Having experienced the malaise that I describe in my post above, I decided not to go cold turkey, but to wean myself off the stuff.
Seems to have worked for the last 15 years, but I wouldn't like to become complacent!

Yes, you are right nevd... I am rounding down the amount of caffeine in decaf versions to zero. Also I didn't say anything about cutting out chocolate, which has some as well. Cheating a bit, I guess. But my goal is not 100% purification, but really just to see how I feel without the ups and downs of large caffeine jolts.
And just for the record, I don't see why a person who wished to slowly wean themselves from caffeine (rather than cold turkey) should not join this challenge. Regardless of approach, support is useful!!

I am pretty sure I've found de-caf versions of green tea

My mother always used the brand "Excedrin" for headaches. So, of course when I got out on my own, I bought that brand too. I couldn't figure out why I would lay awake at night at times.......until someone pointed out that that particular brand of analgesic contained caffeine! Now I check labels
Trimb wrote:

Trimb, that one is a biggie! I've definitely noticed that when I've had coffee at work, to help me stay awake...........I have bottles of water left over at the end of the day That may be why I feel like I am still retaining fluid???

1 day down!
Yes, I thought about the Excedrin as well. The migraine formula is a loading dose of caffeine. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it though. I am currently down to about 1 cup per day, and no headache today, so I think I'll be okay on that front. It's a consideration for the high-level folks though.
I noticed every cup of coffee that I saw on the way to work today. Even people in cars. I think that's just mental. I had a really hard work out tonight and am looking forward to sleeping like a baby! Tomorrow, I will keep the water going all day during a very busy day, and I'll get some herb tea if necessary.
Now, if I can just cut back on the cigs and quit that nasty habit!
Well TB, it might be you and me, but we'll make this work!!!
Cheers!

Not much sleep last night, and I woke up immediately thinking that a cup of coffee would be nice to get me going. I settled for decaf and splurged adding a bit of sugar to help me feel less deprived.
My sister is coming over for dinner tomorrow night, and I always make iced tea since I never have sodas to offer. It will be tempting!

I think I must already be reeling from the lack of caffeine - because you got me laughing on that one
I stopped on my way into work this morning to pick up some diet IBC root beer (caffeine-free, natch). I actually was very good about drinking water all morning (about 5 cups in already) so I'm rewarding myself with a root beer now. Yum!

Ok, I keep looking at this every day, but think I would like to, but I can't.
which is stupid, because I can do anything I want to!
I had no caffeine yesterday, so If I can do it for one day, I can do it forever, right?
I'm in.

Doh! I totally forgot and ordered a diet-coke at breakfast this morning. I went out with friends and I was so engrossed with ordering food that wouldn't put me too far over my calories for the morning that I totally forgot the caffeine challenge! Silly me!
I've got it in mind again :-) Will try to do better.

How about a sign around the neck at breakfast: "No caffeine, whatever I may say"?
Might work.

I am so worried about forgetting that I have a Yahoo reminder scheduled to pop up daily in my email and tell me no caffeine! Some days there are so many things that pop up, it looks like I have the schedule of the President!

LOL - those are both good suggestions! I rather like the sign though - I could make one to go on the end of my hairstick :-D
I hear ya about the schedule Kit - I have a friend who is retired and occasionally I rattle off my schedule for the next day or two and she is just astounded that one person could be doing so many things. I'm always amazed if I have a day "off" from this and that - It's such a change of pace I don't know what to do with myself!
I played golf today though.. what fun! We are having BEAUTIFUL weather this weekend! It's hard to believe it's July.

I thoughtfully made iced tea for my dinner guests on Saturday... and only one person had a glass. Now I have an almost full pitcher in my fridge. I have to look at it every time I open the door.

Tea is cheap.. you can always pour it down the sink if you want to save yourself the temptation :-)
Speaking of temptations - I'm not at all tempted, but I have to pay attention or else caffeine sneaks right in. I'm at work, and I have de-caff soda here on purpose. I just went downstairs and grabbed a soda. Looked at it a moment ago and noticed I had accidentally grabbed a silver can instead of a gold can. Doh! Failed again!
I did great yesterday, and even remembered to avoid caffeine even when eating out. Today at work, with plenty of choices? LOL
I'll do better moving forward. It really isn't an addiction for me, just a habit. (I think).

Forgive me forum for I have sinned...
I have had two cups of Starbucks decaf the past couple of days. I say this knowing that Starbucks decaf still has some caffeine in it. I thought they had decaf tea and they swear they don't (although I swear someone told me the Passion Tea was decaffienated). Anyway, I seem to be doing fine with the trace amounts and as soon as I can figure out what tea they have there that is really decaf, I'll get that instead for my walk to the subway. Hot as it is, I like my warm beverage on the way down the street.
As FLT said though, we've been having GREAT weather! The windows are wide open and there is a great breeze! It's almost like mid-September. Probably due to global warming or something, but it's nice nonetheless.
Cheers everyone!

Not to sound too much like a baby, but where were you all during my highly ignored:
Peter's May 2007 Water and Diet Soda Challenge
I guess I could have made it a caffeine challenge as is my only caffeine.
One thing I learned is that as you cut out the caffeinated drinks, be sure to drink plenty of water.
I couldn't possibly start now with family in town and all our activities. I need to concentrate. But I wish you all success and if you keep it going in August I'll join in on the 1st!

Wow, I didn't see that Peter! I would have joined!! In my 90-day goals (Jack Canfield thing I do with others), I have from July-September, to join 2 challenges minimum a month. I'm in two here and already did a 7-day no ETOH challenge with a friend. We both won!!! Yay! I've really cut back on that and feel a lot better.
Maybe we could get a no liquor/beer/caffeine challenge going soon. That would HAVE to increase the water intake in this group. There would be virtually nothing left!
Shoot me off a PM when you want to do any challenges in August. As long as it doesn't involve giving up cookies (forever), then I'm in!

Sorry Peter - I had just joined up on the forum when I saw your challenge in mid-May, and with my "Baby Steps" mentality I just wasn't ready to start reducing my soda intake at the time. That said, I did read the challenge posts and did acutually reduce my diet-coke habit a little bit during the tail end of the challenge. It wasn't wasted on me, just a couple of months early!

ive been considering joining this for a while. and now ill take the plunge. i drink way too much caffeine! i have found myself not sleeping well at night lately and i think its due to all the diet coke in my diet. im not going to cut it out completely- i just cant as lame as that sounds, im seriously addicted to the stuff. i need to do this gradually so ill start by not having caffeinated drinks after 7pm. then hopefully it will help me sleep better!
good luck to everyone else

Guess I didn't read the entire length of your challenge, Peter. I don't feel I have issues with drinking diet soda and not drinking water... mostly just too much coffee and tea.
By the way, I've been having decaf coffee almost every day. I hope that's okay
I guess next baby step would be to eliminate that too!

I've been doing well since my last lapse earlier this week. Yesterday and today I have (as far as I can remember) avoided drinking caffeinated versions of stuff entirely.
I am starting to have a low-grade headache which I suspect is withdraw caused - even though I don't feel like I drink much caffeine I've been drinking the free diet coke at work for some time now and I must have gotten hooked on the caffeine from them.
It isn't bad enough to worry about though.. so I'll continue drinking my "gold can" and my water.
How is everyone else doing?

Hey FLT!
Those headaches might be allergies. With the wind blowing (which has been really nice), and the humidity, both have triggered allergies for me. It's been a Claritin week!
I had a venti (20 flippin' ounces!!!) coffee today that a friend bought me. I told him I'm on decaf at this point, and that I take skim milk... well, I think he got it half right! The milk was great, but by 10 a.m. I was in V-fib (paddle time!). Holy Moly! At 6:00 I finally had to take a pill because I really felt like I was going to jump out of my skin and it wasn't going away! So, that said, I think I had caffeine today... Does it count if it was completely unintentional?
Good luck everyone! I am definitely NOT having any tomorrow! I may still be awake!

Kit,
Good point about the possibility of allergies.. I'll take a Zyrtec this morning and see if that helps. I usually take them daily but have been trying to "stock pile" a bit because during ragweed season I often take one every 18 hours, LOL.
Sorry about your accidental ingestion - I bet that WAS a shock to your system after not having any for a while now! I think it counts (just ask your heart!) but I know no one here holds it against you :-) Today is a new day!

That reminds me of an old story!
Once when I was working out hard seven days a week (how do you spell compulsive?) I'd get so sore that I used a lot of Excedrin. And I was having a great deal of trouble sleeping at night.
I would take a number of tablets before bed, and had no idea it contained caffeine. When I was talking to someone about my problem sleeping and they asked me if I was taking any drugs, I said no, just aspirin. Then asked what kind.
They had me get the bottle and we figured out that at bedtime I was taking the equivalent of something like five cups of coffee!
My point is to remember that lots of things contain caffeine, including of course chocolate.
PUT DOWN THAT CHOCOLATE BAR!
Just kidding.
Peter
P.S.
I'm still planning on joining this challenge August 1st!

| Decaffeination is going well so far! I finally made it to the store to buy decaf hot tea to sip on (I find it helps curb appetite to sip on something). I bought Tazo decaf version of Chai tea. Yum!! I could even splurge and mix in some sugar and milk to make a "chai latte". Ah, the little things in life are good!

Lack of sleep and a frantic morning caught me out and about with low blood sugar and a distinct possibility of throwing up all over the place, so I pulled into the first fast food place possible and got a small diet coke (yes - there went the caffeine) and a small hamburger. I only had half of each, but if I had tried water I really would have gone over the edge, I needed the carbonation to settle my belly right then, and didn't have time to seek another option.
I'm back on the wagon now.

Well, after the 20 ounce coffee last Wednesday, it went down hill. I'm getting decaf at Starbucks, but I know it has some caffeine in it. I've had about 2 cups of regular coffee mixed in when I couldn't take it at work anymore (not the work, the delicious smell of coffee!)
Since it's over tomorrow, I'm going to call it a done deal and just be mindful of what I'm drinking. I will keep it to a cup max as few times a week as a treat. Like chocolate!
:o)
Okay, what's the next challenge folks?

So July is officially over. I was out of town the past few days, but I stuck to my decaf plans. Actually I bought a diet sunkist while on the road... I was in a big hurry and I was too lazy to check to see if it had caffeine. So okay, maybe I cheated a bit??
I'm really glad I did this test. I didn't miss coffee as much as I thought - I just substituted decaf versions! I'm trying to limit soda anyway, so that wasn't hard. Once I finally made it to the store to buy decaf hot tea, I didn't miss that either!
I'm going to stick with my new habits, although maybe iced tea occasionally because I missed that the most.

I too have to admit I'm glad that the challenge is over. I hate tap water, and I eat out every day and most places don't have a diet soda option that doesn't have caffeine in it. I am continuing to be caffeine-free at home, and will limit it at work - but I suspect eating out will include caffeine unless I'm at a place like Panera Bread (they have diet and diet caffeine-free on tap - so it's easy there).
Thank you so much for posting the challenge - it was fun, and eye-opening!

Thanks TrimB!
I didn't make it all the way through, but I have cut back a lot. I order decaf at Starbucks now without even thinking about it! Weird... I had too much caffeine by accident the other day and was miserable by the end of the day because I was jumpy and irritable. My patience level was at zero and I wanted to jump out of my skin. I'm thinking I might try again and see if I can really do it for good. Like FLT however, I'm having a hard time finding options in some places. Much of the decaffeinated stuff is loaded with sugar! Well, I guess I will just use the extra money I save at Starbucks and buy bottled water no matter where I am!
Alrighty. I'm gearing up for the next challenge (which currently is not yelling at the cat).
See you on the flip side!

trimB,
Thanks for this challenge which I was planning to join August 1. I edited your first post in this topic that said it was for July so people didn't stop reading it. I hope that's okay.
I am so sick of my dependency on Diet Pepsi. My puppy was just walking around the house with an empty 24-pack carton, holding it by the handle and looking like a St. Bernard with its little barrel of liquor... coming to the rescue.
I've quit cold turkey before and felt sick for three days, so I'm not doing that again. I'm going to cut down slowly.
What I'm going to commit to is posting daily how many cans I drink. My goal will be to cut back to none at all, but I'm not saying how fast. My commitment is to keep posting until I succeed, and I know that posting about it for months on end would make me feel pretty silly so my exposure in this challenge should help me move along.
FLT, about having caffeine when eating out... what I want to end is my addiction and the headaches I get when I don't keep up my supply. But I know from past experience that when I am not drinking diet soda on a regular basis an occasional drink doesn't cause a problem.
So after I kick the habit, I won't worry about having an occasional diet soda at a restaurant or a friend's. And how could I go to a movie without popcorn and a diet soda? During the time I am quitting, and posting here, I will count the occasional diet soda I have outside my home.
Thanks to everyone that reads this challenge... I'll be able to tell from the Views that I'm not alone in this.
I'll post today's report tonight.

Okay Peter, so we're going to keep this running? I'm in. Today I was very mindful of the challenge and have had no caffeine. So, so far, so good. I really want it gone for good I think. Well, I want to get it down to a very occassional happening if I can. Like when there is NOTHING else without sugar to choose from.
Let's see what happens.
Meanwhile; how many diet Pepsis do you drink per day? And how did you trian the dog to take out the trash (or at least walk it around the house)??? My cats don't do anything! We're going to have a talk just as soon as I come back from a meeting this evening!

If I didn't need to get to bed -- big day with Red Cross meetings tomorrow -- I'd take a picture of my little desk where I've worked for six years on this website. To keep track today, I stacked my empty Diet Pepsi cans on top of my printer!
With the meetings I'll make four my goal for tomorrow, too. But my goal for Wednesday is three. Baby steps.

| My current exposure to caffeine is mainly my weekly visits to IKEA. I've switched to decaff coffee though. Still, apparently decaff coffee is 1/5 the caffeine of a regular one, and I did have 5 of them (yes, they're free) so I guess I had the equivalent of 1 coffee. That was on Thursday.

Did Ikea do a focus group to find out that free coffee makes people buy more stuff? I find I get energized by the Swedish meatballs and that ligonberry stuff that comes with it! Gives me the calories I need to walk through the entire place purchasing items I didn't know I needed until I saw them on display.
Way to go Peter! Babysteps is right! You'll be okay. We're here for you! I'm having my one cup for the day now, so we'll see how I do. It's Cafe duMond chicory coffee.

Way to rally that willpower Nir! I could sit in a bathtub full of that ligonberry stuff and eat my way to the bottom. I'll bet it's really good on top of Swedish cake too! I'll just use my imagination. This way I won't have to clean the tub (or grease it to get my big butt out of it!).

I agree with you Peter that once you get over your dependency, then the occasional diet soda while dining out or other similar situation won't be a big deal. That being said, I had a diet coke with my microwave popcorn and movie yesterday. I almost said no when my hubby offered me one, but the popcorn and soda combination is deadly!!
And I'm proud to say that the pitcher of iced tea in my fridge is still sitting there, and I haven't had one bit!!

You can add me to the list................of those who have never been into an IKEA.....and the list of those wishing to get rid (or almost) of the caffeine. I kicked it once..........and drifted back to it slowly, by taking up the coffee habit again. I deliberately started with regular coffee this winter, when I was overworked and stressed. I was falling asleep over my computer at work. Not very productive!
Now, I am getting more sleep and am less stressed (most of the time), so today I made my coffee half regular and half decaf.
I'm working on it! I'm going to take Peter's approach, and go slowly....instead of cold turkey! Don't need the headaches, with all the pain from this tennis elbow. And now that I'm working on getting back to ETL eating plan, I should have plenty of energy from all the fruits and veggies.

Sometime you just have to laugh. I stopped by a friend's home yesterday to drop off a pressure washer I'm loaning them and they had left a note and a 12-pack of Diet Pepsi. It was left over from a party and they were sure I could use it!

I got so busy yesterday that I never got to my fourth can! I'm not ready to commit to (only) three yet; we'll see how today goes.
