It's almost time for the next challenge, everyone!

Here are the guidelines for the Independence Day weight loss challenge (similar to those of the previous ones):
  1. The challenge will run from Tuesday May 1st through Wednesday July 4th

  2. You may join the challenge at any time beginning May 1st, and late-comers are most welcome. You can even join the challenge in June. To join the challenge, post your height, starting weight and goal weight.

You may choose any goal you like. But if your goal is to lose more than 18 pounds during the challenge period -- more than two pounds a week -- please explain why you think your goal is realistic.

This website is dedicate to healthy, common sense, lasting weight loss, and does not support crash diets which do not have realistic expectations of producing long-term results.

For more information, please see the Tutorial ( http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial.php ) and the forum topic The Most Likely Reason Your Diet Will Fail ( http://www.caloriesperhour.com/forums/forum46/5491.html ).

Your height will be used to display your BMI. Disclosing your height is optional but as incentive to share your height with us, unless told your height I'll just assume you are 5' (1.52m).

  3. Pick a day for your weekly weigh-in, and stick to it a closely as you can. Then post your current weight each week -- or as often as you would like!

You may wish to read: How Often Should You Weigh Yourself ( http://www.caloriesperhour.com/forums/forum46/5625.html )

  4. Those who are not losing weight, and those who are gaining, will receive praise for continuing to participate. It's so easy to run and hide! We've all been there ourselves.

We also know that by participating, they are very likely doing better than they otherwise would be.

  5. The results will be updated every Wednesday (or more often) and posted right here just below these instructions, so they will always be easy to find.

We want the challenge stats to be realistic and reflect active challenge members, so anyone not posting for two consecutive weeks will be dropped from the list. But they will be put right back on the next week should they post again.

If you need to withdraw from the challenge, please have the courtesy to post a farewell note or send me a Private Message (PM). Your name will be removed.

  6. You are encouraged to share how you are doing during the challenge, and especially to give each other support. However, to make it easier for me to find your weekly weight, please try make sure your weight stands out (if your browser lets you do this).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them or send me a PM.

Wishing you success and happiness!

Nir

Here's a picture of where my BMI has been in the last 12 months - that's right, always in the healthy range, but I did not like those quick and unexpected gains back in June and late July. I've now had about 4 months below BMI ~20. My target range is BMI 19.5-20.5 (or 117-123lb) and I've been below that for a couple of months.

I currently do some simplified couning (a substitute for calorie counting) and over the last couple of months I have cautiously increased (in fact almost doubled) my food intake (300g to 550g - only counting calorie-dense foods). Increases will continue cautiously and I expect to actually experience some weight gain during this challenge period.

Other food-related objectives include moderating my exposure to buffets - these are currently down to just once a week (from a 3-a-week peak not long ago) and I'm hoping to get them down to once every 2 or 3 or 4 weeks. I am also sometimes munching on food (for example popcorn) for a high proportion of the day and maybe I want to curtail that (we'll see)

SW 52.64 (115.9lb)
GW 54.48 (120.0lb)
Height 65 inches
I plan to weigh-in on Wednesdays.

Thank you for doing this yet again Nir. It really does help.

I had a shaky ending to the last challenge and lost some ground (and some thumb ) but I still made good progress so I'm happy. Now I've got to get back on track and start eating healthily again. The moral of the story is ALWAYS use the guard when slicing things with a mandoline.

Though I find it hard to find the time to post, I am determined this is going to be the year I reach my goal weight.  Being in the challenge makes me more mindful and less likely to put my goals to the side.

Small goals at a time seem to work well for me.

Height is 65 "
Starting weight is 133.0 lbs
Goal weight is 129.0 lbs

Sorry about your thumb LLcoolB.

Welcome Butterfly.

Best of luck everyone!  Time for a little friendly competition!:bug:

Thanks for keeping these challenges going Nir.  Count me in.

Use my final weight from the last challenge for my start weight = 257.6

Goal weight = 235 I know this a little more than the 18 lb limit but I need to really push myself as I have fallen a little behind my goals for the year and need to do a bit of catching up.

Height = 74"

Weigh in days will be Saturday

Nir, I hope you're feeling better today and didn't catch some kind of bug.

Today is already my first weigh in day.  If it's not too much trouble,

please change my start weight to 123.4

and Current Weight also to: 123.4

Getting out of the "No Gain" color is good motivation.  If I'm out of it right off the bat, I'll probably slack off.

UTIs are very rare in men under 50, but I have been a high risk patient ever since being instructed to self-catheterise myself mid-2007 onwards. In the interim period I've also had 5 or 6 operations and yet it took 5 years of being 'high risk' to develop this. Apparently the bug in question is E-coli in 95% of cases.

Now that the anti-biotics have kicked in, normal service has been resumed, though this episode is making me more careful the way I do things - for example I find myself washing my hands before using the loo!

UIT's are the worst.  Except maybe a really bad toothache.   Glad to hear you are feeling better.  I'm still amazed at how fast antibiotics work.

Interesting approach. When I was still trying to lose weight (i.e. every recent challenge except for this one and the one starting March) I didn't want my starting weight to be the end-weight for the previous challenge, just in case the last bit of loss wasn't real and just a temporary fluctuation, did not want to languish in purple - a hole I inadvertently dug for myself.

While I have your attention, why did you stop counting calories when you did - was it the "admin cost" or did you genuinely feel ready to maintain without some sort of mathematics? I can lose weight without maths, but I cannot be trusted to know the difference between maintenance and surplus without some kind of counting. (or between appropriate modest surplus and inappropriate large surplus)

Neither really, it was sort of like a temporary vacation.  I just thought what the heck, I'll see what would happen if I started eating anything I wanted.  How fast would it take to put some weight back on?  Not long, turns out.  It was not pretty.  So I'm back to counting.

This week I started to weigh-in at 51.5kg which "reminded" me to increase intake (from 550g to 600g as of Saturday May 5th). The bottom line though is that lacking energy is now but a fading memory, gaining muscle is a nice 'abstract concept', gaining fat is not something I am particularly keen on, my "goal weight" of 54.5kg (120lb) represents a weight that I am prepared to see on the scale if it is the "price" of more muscle but otherwise I don't crave it. I don't really like change and that includes change on the scale. I feel that I ought to continue increasing my intake (gradually) for as long as my weight continues to be slipping (however slowly it does this) to prevent a situation where I return to underweight (BMI 18.5, 50.37kg, 111lb - about 4lb away) as I will not put up with being underweight and I do not want to need to take drastic action. I think it is possible that my most recent "weight slippage" is down to my decision to eat out less often (now aiming for a buffet once a fortnight or less often) or a subtle reduction in seeking junk food.

Sorry... totally forgot to weigh AND post on Tuesday!

CRAZY BUSY 'round here and I've been under the weather some.  BUT... I weighed the Thursday after starting this challenge...May 3rd..... and was down 2 pounds.... a BIG surprise for me.  So, as of THEN... I was at 132.

I have been eating differently (not great) for the past week... company.... party planning (and taste-testing recipes for said party....200 people coming), packing food for oldest son's tennis tourney.... after going grocery shopping hungry (BIG no-no:nono:) and tonight... oldest daughter taking me out to dinner and a movie for Mother's Day....oh yeh... and then there's MOTHER'S DAY coming up!  LOL!  Ugggh!  SO.... I am NOT looking forward to the NEXT Tuesday's weigh-in.  Yep... I am staying OFF of that scale until then!

So, Nir... you can leave my numbers the same until then, if you want to.:smile:THANKS!

Oops! Although I would love to be a bit taller 27 inches would be pushing it! Although it would make my BMI really low for a change. Thanks for correcting my reversal.

Despite a bit of Mother's day indulgence it has been a good week and a half.

This week I've not done anything substantially different from 'normal'. Although now all but a distant memory, this week did feature a Red Hot Buffet on Thursday (a moment on your lips, a lifetime on your hips?). On Sunday I ate pub food (chicken, salad, dressing - allegedly a 380 calorie meal) and my weigh-ins are hinting at another sodium hit. I've been "counting 600g" since May 5th. My weight is shifting upwards and that is fine and there are no adjustments required. This analysis just highlights how sensitive I am to change (of any kind), at the end of the day this increased weight is still lower than my start weight for the challenge.
