What (in your opinions) are the best movies?
I, personally, am a total movie finatic. My favorite genres are horror and romantic comedies. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a couch potato but when I do get a few spare hours, there's nothing I'd rather do than watch a good movie!!! What about you?
My favorite horror movie is probably A Nightmare on Elm Street...but I like almost all the ones that actually have a decent plot and aren't overly-gory. I can handle some gore, but sometimes enough is enough. I couldn't stand even 15 minutes of The Hills have Eyes! Despicable! I also don't like a horror with an overly-complicated plot. Here are some of the horrors I can think of off the top of my head I really like: Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, Child's Play, Hellraiser, Children of the Corn, and Silent Hill.
I don't like romance movies 1 bit. But Romantic Comedies are adorable! They're so cute. I like 10 Things I hate About you, The Truth about Cats and Dogs, and The Breakup Artist!
Last but not least, I kind of have a thing for movies that are exposing scandalist behavior or entertainingly bringing to light a large issue. These are movies like: Bowling For Collumbine, An Inconvenient Truth, and the newly made, Sicko. Yes, I am very liberal. What can you expect from hippie parents who, when in private, do anything but keep their opinions to themselves!
Anyway, I'd like to discuss some of these movies, or any others people can think of that they want to talk about. Movies rule!

I also am a huge movie fanatic. My fave genre is horror, but me & hubs will watch anything actually. A good action flick...comedy...even kid's movies - it's all good.
My absolute favorite horror movie is the original Halloween. I remember seeing it in the theater and having nightmares LOL! It was scary and suspenseful without the gratuitous gore. Not sure if I'm up for seeing the current remake of it in theaters right now by Rob Zombie.
Off the top of my head, my favorite movies are Die Hard, 13 Going on 30, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings trilogy, and probably a zillion more that I can't think of right now - kinda sleepy.
Recently watched: Wild Hogs (so funny), The Astronaut Farmer (accidently fell asleep during last half ), Fracture (excellent), Shooter (wow - action aplenty), Blades of Glory (goofball), Perfect Stranger (very good), Vacancy (decent scares), and Disturbia (excellent surprise).
Great topic - hopefully we'll get a bunch of movie fans to join us!

Yes I do hope we get more movie fans. Oh and was Blades of Glory really good? I want to see that so bad! Was it better than Talledaga Knights because that's like one of the best "goofball movies" ever!
Recently...actually last night...I saw the Nanny Diaries. It kept me interested and though it's not as funny as the commercials try to make it out to be, it's a good movie!

| I like Disney movies in general. I liked I.Robot a lot and Big Fish. I do like romantic comedies, but nothing too sappy, 50 first dates was cute, but I love adam sandler and drew barrymore, I think they're both adorable. The Chronicles of Narnia was really good, but where are the rest of the movies? I don't like movies with too much death involved.

Unfortunately, no...Blades of Glory wasn't that good in my opinion. It had laughs, but not nearly as many as Talledaga Nights - that one had me rolling on the floor!
Just watched Wind Chill over the weekend; I think it was supposed to be a horror flick but totally failed.

Took the kids to the drive-in on Saturday (yup, we still have one here). We watched the following movies:
The Simpsons Movie
Rush Hour 3
Transformers
If you've ever watched the 30 minute Simpsons show on TV, add 57 minutes to it and you'll have the movie. It was pretty funny though, and Tom Hanks did his own voice in the movie. My kids are teenagers and they thought it was funny.
Rush Hour 3 was okay, not as good as the first two Rush Hour movies.
This is the second time I've seen Transformers. The special effects was pretty awesome. It would have been better viewing this in a regular theatre than the drive-in though.

Nightmare on elm street rule! So does the original halloween but omg chronicles of narnia as a top fav movie? lol thats a bit funny to me. I thought the Thomas character was sooo perverted lmao. Because he was like curled up on the stairs weeping after she wakes up from that sleep ya know? And its scaring her, And its all dark! That was too funny to me i guess its just my mind but jesus i was looking around the theater seeing if people got the same reaction as i did haha..
Yay for monkey mentioning 300! I LOVE the movie 300! HOLY POOP ON A STICK! lol.
My fav tops would be umm not sure.. Halloween (original), Psycho (the original), and silence of the lambs.. ohhh i'm such a nut for hannibal lector mmm he's a turn on in those films i dont know.. i love killers lol. But dont listen to me i think any evil guy is hot even freddy krugar! lol Lord of the rings was such a master piece though.. i was in Awe when i first saw them. But yeah i think Psycho pretty much takes me.
Oh and i saw Halloween by Rob zombie (i <3 him) and it was actually pretty wicked.. if you like boobs your gonna love the movie.. lol. But since its still recent i wont talk too much about it in case i ruin somethin for ya. Take care movie goers

I LOVE horror movies but haven't seen a scary one or one that's scary throughout in ages. Now they seem to focus on gore, which isn't scary anymore if it ever was, instead of focusing on the unknown and leaving things up to our imaginations.
My favourite horro film is Scream 2. My favourite film in general is Pirates of the Caribbean because I LOVE JACK SPARROW!!!! Sorry about that...oh yes, my favourite cartoon is the Disney movie Pocahontas. I don't care that it's inaccurate, the film is stunning and the songs will be with me for a lifetime.

Ok, I love this thread. We should just come here to give reviews of the movies we have currently seen.
I love watching movies too. This weekend we rented "Astronaut Farmer" and I thought it was pretty good. It is not an action movie, but it is very endearing. I love the devotion it portrays of the family and I found it very meaningful.
We also have watched "Premonition" which was pretty good, sure makes you want to be sure you don't lose your mind and get commited
We watched "The Hills Have Eyes" - the 1st one, and that totally creeped me out. We got stranded this summer in the mountains and I had a really hard time trusting the people that came a long to help us, which probably wasn't good, but that movie really made a yucky impression on me.
A TV show we watched for the 1st time last night that I would highly recommend is called, "Just For Laughs" it is similar to Candid Camera and let me tell you - it is funny! I hadn't laughed that hard in a long time. It came out on a local channel...It might have been ABC. Laughing is a good thing and fights stress so I would really recommend it for anyone who likes to laugh.

I don't see that many movies -- well, the really big ones -- but I tend to enjoy seeing a half dozen over and over again. I get to know them like friends, and I trust them!
While You Were Sleeping
Ground Hog Day
Dave
Independence Day
Mr. Destiny
and Home Alone at Christmas with the grandkids. Cracks me up!

Did anyone go see Enchanted??

Oh, and I'm not pushing Christianity or anything but a word of caution: If you are planning to go see The Golden Compass, you deserve to know that it is made by a devout atheist, and the books/movies are basically about killing God. You can read about it at snopes . com.

intersting- to kill God, wouldn't one have to believe in his/her/it's existance? that sort of negates the idea of athiest... weird. but i have no idea what the movie or the book is about. i've never heard of it before. i suppose i could look it up on snopes.
anyway, Pulp Fiction, Almost Famous, A Christmas Story (it's that time of the year!!!), Girl interrupted, The Doors, Peter Pan...
and the longest standing favorite of mine...
Dark Crystal (i wanted to be a gelfling when i was little )

Thanks for the reminder. I need to see that again.
As I remember, it has a great ending, too. I'm a real sucker for good (happy) endings. I can totally enjoy a movie while I'm watching it, but then if it ends unhappily... I don't like it anymore. Maybe not so mature of me, but... that's me!
I think the worst movie I ever saw with City of Angels. This woman is all happy and gets up early in the morning and rides her bike to the grocery store and gets hit by a truck and dies... this after the angel in the story gave up his life for eternity as an angel to become a mortal again to live with her.
Then I just saw Premonition and it was as bad!
Oh, that reminds me of another paranormal film, but with a good ending... Dragonfly. I recommend it.

Yeah, we went and saw premonition in theaters...at the end we were like ..."Whaaaaa?" Such a bad bad ending.
I don't know Zen. I agree with what you are saying. I think...maybe he intends to kill the idea of God for everyone else...?

Christmas movies rock my socks off! Me too CG !!! I can barely get any work done around here...with Lifetime, the Family Channel, and the Hallmark channel constantly playing holiday movies. I love them all, from the animated ones like Rudolph (my fave lol) to all the dramas. I just watched The Christmas Shoes for the first time last evening...didn't know it was so sad - I had bags under my eyes this morning!

There's also a whole slew of movies that aren't of a Christmas theme, but take place at Christmastime. Like While You Were Sleeping, and I think Die Hard.
It would be fun to make a list of them!

I took my family to see The Golden Compass when it first opened. Nowhere in that movie did it talk about killing god. My only issue about the movie is when two polar bears were fighting and one knocked the other one's jaw completely off. I thought that might have been a bit too graphic, but it wouldn't have prevented me from watching it again.
What I found interesting is that the book received some parental award over ten years ago. I don't know why people are making a big stink about it now.

All I know is George Pullman is quoted as saying "My books are about killing God." Until I hear otherwise, that is enough to keep me from reading/watching.

you know, this poses an intersting question. what sinificance does the author's intension play in the audiences' perception and interpretation of the work? if the author has particular intentions, but the audience does not pecieve those intentions, do the intentions matter at all? or, on the opposite side, if the audience interprets a work in a particular way, that is, completely different that what the author intended. maybe those questions are actually the same. essentially, i think it comes down to: does the author's intention really matter at all? i guess, if the author is good, he or she will have an intention and will beable to get theat idea across... but the author cannot account for the reader. he or she does not know the reader, the reader wil be influenced by a plethora of outside forces, past experiences, etc....
in this istance, it's claimed that the author was out to get a particular idea across- but, if the audience does not see the work in that way, does it really matter what the author inteded? i am thinking that the author's intention doesn't evn really exist in the realm of the audience until someone sees it. an author can claim that their book is about a patricular idea, but if the audience doesn't see it, does it really matter?
lol- my husband and i "argue" about this stuff now and then (yes, we are both literature geeks!)

Yeah, I see your point, and I agree with you to a certain extent...
...but bottom line for me, I am not going to monetarily support, or in any other way support, an atheist, in their quest to either continue in atheism their selves or spread atheism to others. Because I believe in God, and I'm not going to help someone spread their unbelief.
But I do see what you are saying. Like the other day I was thinking, if you insult somneone, but you don't understand it and it doesn't mean anything to you, is it really an insult?

I changed my reply because it appeared I was baiting.
I feel pretty secure in my belief and movies that contradicts what I believe don't bother me at all. I find different beliefs fascinating though and I'm more willing to learn about other people's beliefs.
My initial reply was to just let you know that this particular movie did not say anything about killing god (because in your post you said "and the books/movies are basically about killing God"). I can't say anything about the book though. I bought the book but hadn't read it yet. My daughter got to it first so I'm stuck waiting for her to finish.
Anyway, to avoid getting into too much of a religious debate I won't say anything else on this subject in public.Last edited on 17 December 2007 07:55 pm by CodeMonkey

| I love comedies and sci fi type of stuff! Dumb and Dumber is one of my favorites and The Man with Eugene Levy was soooo funny! The Forgotten was an excellent suspense movie. Has anyone seen the creepy horror flick The Cube? Oh man! That one gave me nightmares! I'm not big on horror movies. My hubby and I like to watch televisions series in order. We almost made it through all 10 years of Stargate SG1. Excellent show! Jericho is awesome! And Heroes is great too! Any suggestions for good sci fi that the kids can watch too?

as far as recent films are concerned, Harry Potter 5, and the new National treasure movie both kick patooty.
A movie that I missed in theaters but really really want to see is Elizabeth the golden age. I've seen the first movie, and it was cool. I can't wait till the 2nd comes out on dvd.
Independence day is a good one too. One movie I love watching around the hollidays is A Christmas Carol, but the one w/ the guy that plays the captan on star trek as well as the Dr. Xavier on Xmen..........can't remember his name right now though....oh well

funny you should ask. i have only recently seen the second and the third one (due to this thread, actually!), without seeing the first (they were free on ON DEMAND through our cable service). i really really hope the first one is better than these two. a little bit freaky, cube zero was, but from what i have heard about the first one, it is supposed to be galaxies better than the following two. especially the prequel.
i am really dying to see the first, but it isn't on our cable options this month. hopefully next month??? or i guess i could go rent it.....
so no, niether of them are that scary. the second is a tad on the freaky side (i think i jumped once or twice), but not scary (sort of cheesy in my opinion). the third is a complete joke. so rent it. you won't lose any sleep over them.

If you can appreciate a good story, good actors and a good script, without all the action of an Indian Jones flick, you'll really enjoy Forrest Gump.
I watched it again last night and forgot how really wonderful it is.
