I liked both remakes. I think of them as totally different movies though with the same story line. I don't think the Halloween remake was as good as the original, but it was worth the watch.

Had some good stuff that the first one didn't have but it was more gory and weird. Not the good old scary, like the first one.

Anyone on here seen knocked up or 40 year old virgin. My husband and I thought both those movies were really funny.

bye the way talking about remakes. Anyone have any thoughts about the king Kong remake. I think Jack black was in it.

For a few years I was slave to television. It ruled my life at every waking moment. It was with me when I was traelling on the bus to work and during working hours too. It was wall to wall. I would hardly ever have a thought. I was numbed by TV and I couldn't see a way of moderating it. It was like having a 2nd job.

I was then lucky enough to have a trigger. Something important. I had to quickly find alternative accomodation. In order to focus I banned TV. Within a week I found somewhere else to live and was moving there. During that week I was so busy I did not watch TV and when my posessions arrived at the new location I did not reassemble my extensive TV-and-VCR installation (it numbered approximately 10 VCRs - it was quite a complicated setup).

It is now 4.5 years later. I still watch the ocassional clip on YouTube and every now and again my friend drags me to the cinema, but I do not have the desire to plug the TV back into my life!

I can really respect trying to get TV out of your life but I'm a bit of a news junkie...especially during an election year and I won't say anything else about politics!

I like movies that take me to a nice place, have a good twist, or make me laugh.  Sometimes when I'm tempted to munch just out of boredom a good movie or book will keep me occupied instead.  So, fav DVDs for repeat viewing in no particular order:

The Princess Bride
Sideways
Moonstruck

Roxanne
Bull Durham
The Big Lebowski
The Station Agent
Enchanted April
Big Night
Dan in Real Life
LOTR

The Usual Suspects

And that about does it...

I know what you guys mean, I won't be able to give up movies or the news completely. My parents love renting, and it would be a sin not to watch coverage on the elections. After all, the democratic convention is comming to Colorado, so I should probably get in the spirit of things!

My little "pledge" is more directed toward cutting out regular TV. I'm just so tired of being constantly bombarded with commercials! Besides, I feel like I'm unproductive and lazy when I zone out with a sit-com. Some can be funny, but I hate when I mindlessly let myself fall into one that's completely idiotic! One time I was watching Mad TV (it can be idiotic but I've really enjoyed it) and fell asleep toward the end----or so I thought....

Next thing I know, I find myself starring at the TV three hours later at Stargate SG1. I had been unconciously tuning in!

My husband and I don't watch allot of TV. It wasn't untill I got the treadmill that I started watching it on a regular basis. I have certain shows I watch when walking. Otherwise, the tv is off for us.

My husband will only watch movies with me once in awhile. He can't stand to sit in one place for to long.

I would do anything to be able to swear off television. Unfortunately my wife and kids would hang me if I tried that. I guess I could make it a personal goal but it's tough when everyone in the house is in a comatose state watching some new show.

When our projection screen TV broke I was not in a hurry to replace it. My wife kept pushing me to get it fixed or replaced but I'd find an excuse not to. We had a spare TV put in it's place but it was pretty small. My mother-in-law came to visit and decided our small TV wouldn't cut it for her, so she bought a larger one.

I have been trying to make it a personal goal to avoid watching a lot of TV. So far since my MIL and my own mother came to visit (my 18 year old graduated high school so they came for that) I haven't watched any TV at all. I'm hoping to continue avoiding watching TV after they leave.

Seeing as how TV is such a part of modern lifestyle, it's definitely hard to resist, especially with family members who can't seem to be pulled away from it! Good luck to those of you that are trying....

I didn't see the second Chronicles of Narnia movie, Clarinetgurl. Was it any good?

JK, you've made it clear that you "LOVED IT"! I could never really get into those stories or movies, but from what everyone says they're utterly amazing. If I break my pledge to watch a movie with my parents, that will be one of the top things to rent, or possibly go see....

I enjoy movies that are thought provoking and make me question my existence and reality. The Matrix trilogy really did that for me.......and it still, to this day, amazes me how creative and a bit demented the writer of this script must have been to come up with this concept. Along the same lines, I also very much enjoyed the Star Trek movies and series, specifically the 5 newer movies, as I did the Star Wars trilogies. I guess that makes me a sci-fi "geek."

On the other hand, I also enjoy tragic and bittersweet love stories.....especially where the heroine must choose between personal happiness and her duties as a political figure or woman. To this extent, I really enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha, Marie Antoinette, Tristan and Isolde, and First Knight.

Hey I just watched The Dark Knight last night, I did not expect it to be as good as it was. I was not that impressed with Batman Begins...but The Dark Knight actually is really good!

Heath Ledger was the bomb as the Joker....RIP!!!!! I cried at the end of the movie just because I was so sad that we as a society lost such a talented young man.

Great Movie-I reccommend it!

I saw WallE last night, did any one else see it?

The plot was really interesting, and the special effects were very good. It was just a bit depressing, as, according to the film, mankind's future appears very dark....

Clarinetgirl, I realize this is somewhat outdated in the thread, but where the golden compass is concerned, did the author profess to being an aethiest?  Not that I don't think he is, I was just curious if he said so.  I was curious because I've read the books and watched the movie and I took it to be more of an attack on organized religion specifically the Catholics.  I do not agree or disagree with what the author was trying to come across with, but I did not take it as being against God in general.

I happened to see Wall-E myself. I found myself offended at how they depicted overweight people in the movie. The way they depict obese people is very negative, and the negative view on heavy people in the media has always been a pet peeve of mine . But, perhaps I'm digging a bit too deep into the imagery. Otherwise, it was a very charming flick. Not a personal favorite, but yet another bar-raising Pixar film.

I did see another very interesting animated movie that I thought was charming and funny, daresay better than Wall-E. It's called Persepolis, and although it's maturely-themed, I couldn't peel my eyes away from this. It's an abstractly drawn movie depicting the Iranian Revolution through a young girl's eyes. As the movie wears on, you can see how her identity and mental balance changes as time takes its toll on her. But man oh man, it's great. I can't help but hope anyone looking for something new to watch checks this out. There is a catch though: it's a foreign film, French dialog and plenty of reading if you haven't mastered the language. I haven't developed my mastery beyond "omelette de fromage" but I can read English pretty quick, so I get by, heh.

I was about to say...is Brad Pitt involved in this? Then, I read your last paragraph. LOL

I can't stand Brad Pitt. Eric Bana is much better.

One of my favorite movies is The 10th Kingdom. It's actually a mini-series that was compiled together into one big movie, almost 7 hours long, if I recall correctly. Some might consider it a bit cheesy, but I absolutely love it.

That would be the young actor Orlando Bloom. He's also known for his role as Legolas, the Elf fellow in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I'm not a fan of the guy myself, but for one Orlando there's like a dozen Paul Walkers, so I don't rag on Mr. Bloom too much.

I really liked The Dark Knight too, but I agree with hediv...Batman Begins was much better.  I saw Wall E and liked it, but it wasn't what people made it out to be.  I thought the fat people thing was funny!  They weren't portraying them negativly...they were fat because they did nothing but float around on those chairs with the screens in front of them.  I love suspense movies...my favorites are:
  • The Prestige
  • The Forgeotten
  • 88 minutes
  • The Game
  • The Illusionist
