:angry:K, here goes. Is it just me or do other people dislike being watched or stared at while eating in a public place, especially in restaurants?  When I'm out I give people sitting near me or even from afar some respect for mealtime.  It's not that I avoid eye contact but it's uncomfortable if someone has to watch me chomp away at my food.  It makes me try to eat a little more delicately but come on.  What am I supposed to do when it happens?  Do I stare them down or continue ignoring them?  As far as I know I don't have an unusual way of chewingLOLOL:chewing:

On my own, I can usually ignore others, even if they stare.  (Especially as they're looking at a definitaly middle aged woman eating a "happy meal.")

Now, if a certain in law is present, I either have to put up some sort of mental shield (lalalala, etc.) or just shrug at the victim and hope they don't think I'm the bad guy.

I am not my in-law.....

I don't care if people look/stare at me while I'm eating. People stare at me no matter what I'm doing (in public). I don't even remember the amount of tourists that have asked to take pictures with me because of how I look (funky hair, usually dyed, funky clothes). It's the people who try to sneak pictures that get on my nerves...but that has nothing to do with eating.

It's uncomfortable to know I'm being watched while eating, but now that I lost weight I don't stop to think that they are thinking 'look at that girl eat, that is why she's fat', now I think they think 'look at that girl eat'. I usually avoid eating in public, but I have at times even eaten a burger while walking down the street. I will also be the girl with the candy bar on the train or bus and the one eating icecream while walking down the street in winter. I'm use to being stared at, but the restuarant thing doesn't bother me as much. I feel uncomfortable because I don't want them to think I'm staring at them.
I make a mess eating. So what?

I can't stand being watched while eating. When I'm out to eat I always take the seat with my back facing other people or I sit in the seat with the least amount of people facing me. Sometimes I'll even hold a napkin up to my face while I take bites. I hate being watched. :nono: Why do people have to stare? I remember I was at the Hard Rock Cafe in London and I was sitting with my husband and a lady and her son where sitting at the table next to us (about a foot away), with her sitting on the opposite side of me so we were face to face. She was literally STARING at me most of my meal. I'd look up and she'd have her eyes on me. I'd look around and notice out of the corner of my eye that she was looking at me. I got so mad I had to switch seats with my husband. I was like, "Can we switch seats?" Then I glanced at how she was eating and it was just bazaar. Her and her son were eating in such peculiar ways. Tiny bites, eating finger foods with a knife and fork, sniffing every bite they took.

It makes me feel rather self-conscious, I suppose. It makes me think a lot about how I am eating, and every bite seems to big, and I feel like I have junk all in my teeth...

Lol. So silly.

Eugh! People watching me eat is one of the worst things!

I have pretty bad social anxiety anyway, to the point where I don't tend to go out on my own unless I really need to [food shopping, college, et cetera]. And until four or so years ago I couldn't physically bring myself to eat infront of anyone except my mum and dad, and even that wasn't so great and I'd end up leaving most of my food to avoid it. As a result I was underweight.

Gradually, my self esteem picked up [with the growth of my relationship with my boyfriend] and I could eat more freely, even around extended family members and sometimes going out for meals. Unfortunately as a result of years of not eating and finding some confidence I've gained a few stone over the years, the first being a good thing - I looked healthier and happier, and then over the past two or so years my weight still crept upwards, with yo-yo dieting and feeling powerless. That is, until I joined these forums a few weeks ago and started taking control!

Anyway yeah, bit of a long ramble on the topic. Nowadays I still have anxiety when I eat infront of people, and when I eat out I refuse to sit near windows or at communal seating areas. I prefer to hide in a booth!

Ironically, I've never had anyone bully me over my weight or the way I eat - and I've never experienced anyone watching me eat, so it seems it stems from general low self esteem - and possibly me being ashamed of my mouth! [Kids can be so HORRIBLE, I still cover my mouth when I laugh even though my teeth are much better than they were.]

Eh. I imagine people who stare must have never had any emotion over being seen eating themselves, either that or their minds are so preoccupied that other people may be looking at them eat, that they look at everyone else too!

I guess I'm just "into myself" so much that I've never noticed anyone watching me eat. Guess I wouldn't know if they were watching because I'm not watching them!

Definitely! I feel disgusting when I eat, so I'm terrified I'm going to do something that makes me look disgusting to other people. :nono:
