I thought this might be a fun topic. Some usernames have very clear meanings, others are clever, less obvious or have hidden meanings. I think most people have something about themselves in their username. Many have their history or their goals in their names. I'd like to hear your reasons for choosing your name.
My username is Skipperdox. Skipper isn't me, she's my dachshund (we call 'em doxies affectionately, hence the dox part of the name). She's my workout buddy. One of my excuses for getting a dog was to have a workout/walking companion.
Skipper's name has a lot of meaning, too. My husband and I are very avid sailors. The skipper is the captain, the one who "runs the program" on a boat. Skipper is my first show dog. She is skipper of my dog showing and possible dog breeding program.
In a way, I am a skipper, too. I tend to run the household, make sure the team is working together, keep the deck clear, and insure smooth sailing... Please feel free to continue addressing me as Skipper, I consider it a term of respect.
BTW the little yellow dog emoticon looks a lot like Skip except Skipper is a black and tan doxie.

I thought I'd just stick with my real first name for this forum, but all over the web I use peterinwa which I made up when Peter moved to Washington State.
I've posted in forums for years now to get help learning how to create websites and... run forums! I taught myself how to create a website from books and turned to forums with my questions.
Fun topic!
Peter
P.S.
I have twelve monkeys and my seven grandkids can name them all! (And they can see them, too!) Thus... my monkey.
P.P.S.
I guess I should add this... sometime in 2000 I went looking on the web to see how many calories you burn in an hour doing some activity. I found about five answers, and they were all different.
I had just learned how to make a website, making this silly little site for my grandkids:
http://www.caloriesperhour.com/grandpa/index.html
When I walked into the gym about 30 minutes later, this little light came on in my head and I got the idea to create a little calories burned calculator and do it right!
The calculator would calculate how many calories you burned in an hour, thus caloriesperhour.
And as they say... the rest is history! ;)

I'm Skeletor. I live in Castle Greyskull. He Man is my enemy. I'm on a super low calorie diet that allows me to lose fat in my face while preserving muscle elsewhere. This makes me hot to women all over the world, especially in Finland.

It's completely unobvious why my name is clarinetgurl, right? Right?
Oh. It's obvious? Oh.
Yes, I play the B flat clarinet, and have since seventh grade. I enjoy it, most of the time...not a big fan of practice, but few people are. I was third chair last year...currently we're into marching band, in which there are no chairs.
Uh...yeah, and I'm clarinetgurl cause I'm a girl who doesn't know how to spell. :P No not really, I just had to be different.
Anyone can feel free to shorten my name in one of the many ways that are possible: clarinet, gurl, clar, net, clari, cgurl, cg, clair, (I have this name on another site and I have been called all those, and others I can't remember...)

Ok...here's the meaning behind GenXY. There are two, actually.
1) I was born in 1979 and sometimes, age brackets for generation X include my year. Others do not - they declare me a Gen Y. I haven't seen the "official" age bracket for the generation - so I'm taking a little bit of both.
2) To be quite honest, I am more of a male in mind and heart than a female. Most of my friends are male. The word "tomboy" doesn't cut it for me. I'm waaaay over on the opposite end of the spectrum. I think like a guy, I behave like a guy, I don't associate with ANYTHING that's generally "feminine" (Dr. Phil, tanning salons, manicures, credit cards, etc.) I MUST have a Y chromosome tucked away somewhere! Hence, XY!
So there you have it! I'm a weird, male-minded female whose birthdate lies somewhere within the Bermuda Triangle between Gen X and Gen Y. I just wasn't meant to fit in!
Off to the Island of Misfit Toys!!!

I always think a bit of mystery is a good thing but just to point out that my name has nothing to do with little fish....it's not that I can't spell, I really do mean to have just the one n. As for why Minow....well it's a story that only one other person knows and I plan to keep it that way but have fun guessing if you want!
Oh and boy would I get a shock if one of you came up with the answer.....there's only one way you would know and if you do can I just say hello to you my ex husband!

| I've decided to go as myself, real name and real picture. You can only see my face, which is just as well as I was at least 30lb heavier and have had no form of exercise for around 5 years when it was taken. Mine is a fairly unusual name, but nevertheless it is often taken. Like Peter, I have to append the initials of my place of residence to make a unique identifier for other things (like email).

I chose Hyacinth as my username for two reasons: I love flowers; and when I joined this site I was in a trend where I was intrigued by the way that word looked.
I chose the tree as my avatar for two reasons also: both because it's a cherry tree and because it reminds me of a pink hydrangea. Where I grew up in Virginia those two were common. Now that I live in an overpopulated desert, I miss them very much. :(

I am an avid Stephen King fan and have all his novels in hardcover on the shelf in my office. I have read them all several times. One of my favorites is Rose Madder and Rosie Real is the main character.
Here is a little description of the story:
Rose was a beaten and perhaps paranoid housewife living with her abusive husband, Norman. After seeing one single drop of blood on the sheets one day she takes her husband's bank card and flees the city to search out a new life, but Norman begins to hunt her down, destroying anybody that gets in his way. He wants to take his revenge.
She buys a picture from a pawn shop which has Rose Madder inscribed on the back. She hangs it in her new apartment and starts to realize that its more than just a picture - it depicts a scene that is progressing. The scene of a lady on a hill with her back to the viewer becomes more focused, a pony in the foreground shows all of its body, she finds leaves from the picture on her sideboard, then she steps in...

| Well, my SN is the combo of two names. My name is Jessica. Synergy was the model snowboard that I used to ride when I was younger. I was at snowboarding camp when I was younger and someonw called out "Jess! Synergy!" and I thought it sounded cool. So that's how I got my SN.

I picked my username because Venus is the Goddess of Love and since I wear my heart on my sleeve when I am in a relationship (or out of one) I picked heart of venus.
I picked the nickname on Valentine's Day 2006 because I found I wasn't all depressed being single on a day when everyone seemed to be showing thier SO how much they loved them.
It was a good day.

Thanks to Peter, I got rid of the fish avatar and put my dog Skipper as my avatar. This is her at about 7 months of age. She still has the puppy face. I frequently address her as Skipperdox. "Hello my Skipperdox, are you a good puppy?" The answer isn't always yes.

I use VYV8 cos I am a fast car freak. VY is the model designation of my car (I live in Australia and it is made by Holden, a subsidiary of GM), and V8 for obvious reasons. Australia is very lucky with cars, as our family cars are VERY performance oriented compared to other parts of the world. For example, my Holden is a large sedan, weighs about 3500 pounds, and has the alloy V8 engine and driveline (including rear wheel drive) from a Corvette. In standard form it is good for 0-60mph in about 6.5 seconds, and does the standing quarter in about 14 sec flat.
Yeah, baby!

Oooh I love fast cars too! I think America is slowly making that same transition also with 'family' performance cars. It used to be obvious what cars were fast; sometime soon I may be passed up by a huge ole luxury car . For the past 3 1/2 years I've been driving a Pontiac Trans Am WS6 ram air. It runs 5.4 in the 0-60 and 13.8 in the 1/4 mile...not bad for a girl LOL!!!

Um, well my username is Blue Eyed Lenore for 2 reasons, one obvious one- I have blue eyes- and one not so obvious one that I love poetry, especially by Edgar Allen Poe.
" 'Wretch!' I cried, 'thy God have lent thee- by these angels he hath sent thee
Respite - respite and nepethe from thy memories of Lenore;
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepethe and forget this lost Lenore!'
Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore.' "
And the avatar? Well, first off I'm an Otaku (anime/manga fan), hence why its a manga picture, and secondly I'm a Cardiff Snakecharmers cheerleader for the Cardiff Cobras football team!!
Go Cobras!

So many usernames, so many reasons...
Mine must mean I'm unimaginative, since it's an abbreviation of my first name and the initial of my surname.
(I suppose I could have come up with some arcane reasoning about how it's really a significant interplanetary term derived from ancient Hebrew numerology - but my mum brought me up not to tell fibs. Ah well...)

I chose my avatar cause it looks just like me. Well....I guess you can call me OWF. It clearly says it all. It is embarassing but true. (I have been tolerating insulting comments from "the peanut gallery" for years now-it's really annoying sometimes...for some reason, people are always trying to get me to stop working out and start eating unhealthy with them) And there are worse things I could be obsessed with I suppose. I have been a dancer, cheerleader, gymnast, and have been working out in one (or two, or three) way, shape or form for the past 16 years. I took a brief "rest" (more like, I was being lazy because I was in a new relationship and it was easier to eat pizza everyday and not go to the gym) for about a 3 year period. I worked out a little every once in awhile, but not like the old me. So, for the past 2 years or so, I have REALLY kicked it up a notch and VERY SLOWLY started taking the weight off. I can't emphasize SLOWLY enough....I weighed 127 lbs and I was a size 3/4 when I met my husband....then I weighed 152 lbs after a bad encounter with a personal trainer. (NOT MUSCLE either, it was fat and I was a size 10) Anyway, I was down to 138 for our wedding last year. (result of a crazy Atkins diet where I couldn't have been more miserable) and then I gained all the weight back again. Soooooooooo...now I am eating what I like, keeping track with the help of CPH.com and exercising like I used to. So, I haven't taken my measurements YET...but I did weigh myself. I weigh 142 and am size 6 now. But I am pretty sure a lot of it is muscle this time. I am running my first 5K next month. I have 12 lbs before I reach my first goal. I will get there...slowly, but surely.
Thanks for asking Skipper!!

Aislinga, because for some reason I was unable to sign on with my original username Aisling...
Aisling (vision poem) a poetic genre that developed during the late 17th and 18th centuries in Irish poetry. In an aisling, the island of Ireland appears to the poet in a vision in the form of a woman, sometimes young and beautiful, sometimes old and haggard.
It is also an Irish female first name meaning dream, vision or inspiration, and though I am not Irish, I dream of being slimmer and healthier....

Hmm.. I don't get Dr. Phil, tanning salons, manicures, credit cards, etc. either and yet I've never suspected a lurking Y chromosome, and I've never felt that I was particularly masculine (despite prefering Science Fiction to Romance novels).
Maybe society's definition of feminine is off kilter. Come to think of it my very male brother loves pedicures, maybe society's definition of masculine is a bit off kilter too.

Hi,
Yohkos is the name of my dog. When the kids were younger there was an animated character name Yohko "the devil hunter." That is how the dog got his name and I added the "s". Anyway another reason I use this name, no one has it and I usually get the user name I want. ")

fuuny you should bring this topic up... i thought about doing it myself. i have always been curious about some of the names on this forum.
mine comes from "How to write a Blackwoods artilce" by E.A. Poe. Not many people know of this story, nor the stories related to it. unfortunately, his satire is thouroughly underappreciated. he is quite hilarious, poking fun at himself as well as what many people find to be "good stories".
Though i will not go to excessive lenghts to lose wieght (like how the narrator cut off her limbs for a story- read it! it's funny as all heck!), i will write down my thought and food choices.. for me, this is rather strange, as i am a pretty closed off person unless you know me quite well...
so that is it, i guess...
oh, i also really like having a "z" name. as poe's satire is underappreciated, so is the letter "z".

I like the letter "Z" too Zenobia -- my real surname starts with one.
Great topic. This is a good way for newbies, like me, to get to know people.
Skipperdox, your dog looks exactly like mine! Well, okay, mine isn't a show dog so her ears aren't quite as long and lovely -- but every time I see your avatar I have to turn around and give my sweet girl a pat. Of course she's always in the big comfy recliner while I'm on the Internet.
I picked Sylphide because "La Sylphide" is one of the old famous ballets, about a Scottish sylph. A sylph is a slender, ethereal, fairylike creature. The adjective in all this that best describes me is,"creature." Heh. But I did once, honestly, dance a lot of amateur ballet and my dream is to, one day, if not actually dance the prima ballerina part for the Borshoi Ballet -- at least recover a little bit of everyday, graceful movement.
Love this site, Peter! Thank you!

| Of course, I'm biased, but shelties are extremely intelligent. Even more than that, they are SO in tuned with their people. If you've got kids, they tend to herd them, so you don't worry about them getting too far out of sight. My husband is diabetic, and our oldest sheltie (Glory) wakes him if his sugar gets out of range. They do tend to bark alot, so they are not quiet dogs to have, but you always know when someone is at the door. Any down sides they may have are replaced with the love they give me. Plus they are little clowns. There's never a dull moment!

Anyway, I joined in March 2006, and it was during the Christian church season of Lent. I had just gotten back on plan and was successfully losing weight. It reminded me of how I got the first 90 pounds off.....prayer and leaning on God for strength. So, all that thinking about being a child of God, lead to "His"gal.
The name serves as a constant reminder to me, to keep relying on God for my strength. Also, knowing He wants the best for me, I need to be the best me I can be..........and that means a healthy body, not an obese one!

Skipperdox, 4 years ago I gave up french fries for Lent. Understand they were a daily stop for lunch , along with a fattening burger . I have had maybe 2-3 orders of fries in the last 4 years. The other good thing that came out of it, was when I gave up diet pop for Lent. I haven't had one since Feb. 28.
Sometimes we think we can't go without certain things....until we try it. If our incentive is strong enough, we find an inner strength we didn't know we had . Then it becomes a habit or something we can live without!
Here's to all of us making healthy eating a habit for life

I began my weight loss exodus in late December with prayer...asking God both for results and the willpower to do my part in the equation.
So far I have stuck with both my new eating habits and my regular workouts longer than I ever have before (outside of 4 years of football practice in HS, LOL) and this is the first time i have sought His help in conjunctin with it so that speaks to me!
So while my success has been encouraging, I have to give credit to Him. It isn't really so much my succes as it is a testimony to His power to help us overcome our limitations and flaws.
As for my name...
James is my first name, my dad's first name and my paternal Grandad's first name...but I actually go by my middle name. My first born son will be named James.
My paternal grandad is full-blooded scot but was born in Tennessee. His family immigrated from the Tollcross area of Scotland. The rest of my lineage from the other three corners is rather mixed and unknown so when asked about my ethnic history, i cite to the scottish roots since that's where my unique last name comes from and its the root that I know the most about.
In reality I am a WASP from Kentucky with family roots all over western europe so my name is somewhat misleading in its accuracy.
But it's unique enough that I can use it on most boards I post to and never have to worry about forgetting it.

My daughter has a paint mare, from the Time line. When we first got her, we gave her a new every day name "Miss Time To Go" just didn't cut it. Her new name comes from an Irish song called Mo Ghile Mear, and we call her Mear (pronounced Mar.)
My username is actually my Indian name, given because I'm rather like a mother bear. I like to eat, especially sweet stuff, I don't particularly like exercising, I'm still rather on the "round" side, and there are two things people should avoid doing...hurting someone I care about or getting between me and my dinner .
