One thing I never saw mentioned in BFFM (other than the suggestion to work out first thing in the morning) is when to eat in relation to your workouts.  I do not work out first thing in the morning.  I like to work out when I get home from work.  My question is since I am now eating every three hours, how long should I wait after eating before I work out?  I am guessing two hours would be ideal in order to give the food time to mostly digest but also in order to get me back home in time to eat my next meal, does this sound right?

i think it's all pretty individual.  i can usually hack an hour, but my husband has to wait like 4 or 5, or he will get those nasty side aches.  i have tried 30 min, but i get pains about 20 min into the workout then.  if you are doing weights, i think you can do it almost right away (i think i read that peter eats a banana at the gym between sets or something- i would have to search that one down for confirmation, though).  just listen to your body.  what is most comfortable for you?

I'm not sure yet what works best for me, but I am getting side aches while running now.  How can I avoid those sideaches?  Wait longer after eating? Wait less after eating?  I feel that I drink a lot of water all the time, including during workouts, but I'm not sure how to get rid of the sideaches..........

usually it has to do with not waiting long enough.  something about all of the blood rushing during digestion, but then your muscles need it when you are working out... i don't know the biology of it, but yes, that usually means you should wait longer.  or if you can't, eat something that digests easier and more quickly.  simple carbs...  protein will take longer to digest...

Thank you!  I will try to figure out what foods and what kind of wait I need to optimize my energy and eliminate sideaches during cardio workouts.  I'll post my results when I learn something.

I also feel uncomfortable if I drink too much (I'm talkin water here, people!) before workouts.  I usually try to just have small sips for the 30 minutes prior to jogging.  If I can manage it, I fill up with water 60-90 minutes before - then nothing until workout time.

I usually wait until around 1.5 hours before I want my next meal (the opposite approach).

Side aches ('stitch' in UK)... when I ran regularly, I found that increasing speed slightly and counting breaths (3 paces, breathe in, 2 paces, breathe out) took my mind off the problem and it disappeared. Give it a whirl?

I will do that!  I know when I've paced my breathing with my number of steps in the past, this has helped, I will try this.

On a bright note, last week I had gone, 5 miles in 55 minutes and I set a goal to get down to 5 miles in 50 minutes by the end of March, but last night I decided to give it a try and I did it, almost a whole month ahead of schedule!  So now, the new goal will be 6 miles in an hour by the end of the month (same pace, just for 10 more minutes), then I'm going to start trying to go farther each week in one hour than the previous week until I get 7 miles in an hour, but that will be a ways down the road!:dizzy:
