Hi, I'm new. My height is about 5 or 5'1''.I'm female. I think my body mass is 27. I don't know how much I actually weight, I think I'm at 138, and it feels like I'm soo out of shape. I don't quite understand most of the calorie calculators and how your body naturally burns calories?
Food was one of the only comforts while I went through emotional stages of my life. I'm not even that old--upcoming sophmore.
I wanted to desperately lose weight, going to any website online that even mentioned something of weight loss. After this being one of the best sites I've found, I'm more aiming to just be healthy. It's been a long time and I've always thought being thin meant you are beautiful, but now to me, being healthy means being sincere and the real rose in the bush of thorns.
It's been hard for me, to fight temptation, I 'purged' (this means indulging yourself on food, right?) very much when I decided to start to 'diet' meaning, I wanted to stop taking in loads of sugar and sodium each day. I get bad feeling too, and I've been attempting bulimia at some points. But I really don't want to do that at all anymore.
I just don't know where to start up from. I stopped liquid calories but where else do I go? I think I've been taking in 1500 calories each now, maybe a little more. Does it matter what type of food you take in? Or how much? Or is it just how many -calories- there is?
For instance, I don't think you could lose weight off eating only 1000 calories of chocolate each day, could you? That'd be pretty amazing, but doesn't follow the staying healthy pattern.
How should I exercise? These days the fires in CA have smoked up the air and I'm a little reluctant to go outside for running or to walk like I started to. Our house doesn't have too much room.. no machines to work on, so do I start breaking out the crunches? I'm also very self-consious, hate being watched. I can't go to a gym anyway since I have yet to get a driver's license. When I walked, I tried a lot to avoid people, to avoid being seen, to avoid interaction. Lately, I did walk for about 45 minutes a day, I just never measure distance in my haste to avoid people and I don't know how to measure my speed either.
My mentallity has actually improved a lot but I need to get my body to reflect how I feel too, or it just feels like a lose-lose situation all over again.
Sorry for such a long post and request on my first day, I just don't want to ever resort to starving myself and so far, I haven't been able to find an alternative to the way I feel "I want to be pretty and skinny" vs. the other feel of "I want to be healthy!"

Hi.
Calories: 1000 is too few. 1500 is on the high side. You should be aiming to eat 1300-1400 calories.
Exercise isn't essential but it will help with your progress. Walking is more effective than crunches at burning calories which is what you should be aiming to do but I don't have a specific suggestion for your circumstances.
Yes you would lose if you ate 1300 calories of junk food (http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_diet_calorie.php) but you are better off making better choices (Why Healthy Food Makes You Slim). Actually I suggest reading the entire tutorial - it is all good.

Hey celeste!! I just wanted to say welcome to CPH!
As far as exercising inside...do you have television? FitTV has a lot of good exercise programs... I like In Shape with Sharon Mann, Gilad's Bodies in Motion, and Total Body Sculpt with Gilad...
Also, I think you are looking for the word "binge" instead of "purge"

Thank you for the replies. I appreiciate it very much. I've been doing well with healthy foods, but I think I overdue it on calories, I would think there's a thing like too many calories of fruits.
The tutorial was great! A huge huge huge thank you to Peter (he wrote it right?)
A few questions to make this work..
1. Will eating late or before sleeping affect my body's natural digestion and be bad for me? Even if it stays within my total calorie intake for that day?
2. I ate too much, about 1600calories this one day, would it be unhealthy to suddenly the next day bring it down to 1000 calories to try to balance my calories deficit for the week?
3. Is FitTV on cable? I've never heard of anything like it before.
I'm going to reread the great tutortial another time and make sure some of my other questions haven't been asnwered, because I have a feeling I may have overlooked it.

| balancing low and high days: whilst personally I wouldn't do it, I know there is an entire diet based on this concept (Johnson's up-day-down-day?)

| eat a consistant diet, do lots of cardiovascular/aerobic exercises plus some weight lifting. if you get hungry eat a vegetable like celery because it has nearly negative calories. thats just a quick and dirty plan mind you

On an upday, down day plan like that, I still wouldn't eat less than your unadjusted RMR. Ie, if you need around 1350-ish minimum (using the RMR calc for 5'1, 138, and 14y/o), and you try to shoot for 1400 as Nir says, then if you want to go lower on a day when you splurge and hit 1600 I still wouldn't bottom out lower than 1350ish...

I'm trying to set a calorie deficit, but if my RMR calc is 1350, shouldn't I eat less than that to make a deficit? I'm really a bit confused, I don't want to mess up my diet or go into starvation mode.

No, you should still never go lower than your unadjusted RMR---just lower than your adjusted one.
So, don't go lower than 1350--
Let's say you are "lightly active"--that means you exercise lightly 1 to 3 days per week. Is that about right? That means you burn about 1860 per day.
So let's give you a 25% deficit. 25% of 1860 is 465.
1,860-465=1,395
If you aim for 1,395 per day, and burn 1860 per day, then you will have a deficit of 465 per day or 3,250 per week, almost a pound. AND you will still be eating about your unadjusted RMR, 1,350
Make sense?

Thank you, that makes a lot more sense.
Exercising 1-3 days a week, would that mean I only burn about 1860 on those days that I exercise or that whole week?
My only exercise so far is walking for about 45 minutes, does that work as light?I;m not sure how fast I walk, I just walk.

I have always understood it to mean every day.
I'm not sure what counts as light or not. You might post in the General Discussion area.

I think I just lost a bunch of water weight, the scale seems to be tilting at around 130 now.
Did I do anything wrong? That much weight for me seems a bit extreme. Do I continue as if I was still around 136-137 or do I start off again from 130?
I've lost my appetite, I feel like I don't want to eat. I still -want- to in my mind, but I don't because I don't necessarily feel the need to eat anything. Should I eat at regular intervals anyway? I hate the feeling of eating when my stomach doesn't want anything, before I would always want something, but now it's just died down.

| You are sounding fine to me. If you're not sure what the weight your losing is then you should buy a BMI/BF% scale they cost about 26 dollars (USD) and show can do BF% BMI tracking and they can show water percentage. My water percentage is generaly about 55%
