Anyone know which would be more accurate? A heart rate monitor that takes into account MHR, weight, and (of course) my heart rate throughout my routine? Or the one on my treadmill that takes into account my weight, speed, and incline (which is usually 0 anyway).
The reason I'm asking is because they give completely different results. I just want to know which is probably closer. I'm about 5'10", 240 pounds, 31 years old. I usually do a 30-minute workout with a 5-minute warm up period. I usually get just a hair over 2 miles in that 30 minutes with no incline. I figured my MHR to be about 175-180. After my five-minute warm up, my heart rate stays in about a 155 - 165 range until I'm done.
My heart rate monitor always shows calories burned to be around 700.
The treadmill always shows calories burned to be around 300.
Big difference.
Anyone have an opinion on what I'm probably closer to? I'm kinda new to this all. Started working out regularly about 4 months ago (weighed 300 pounds at the time). I just kinda feel like the heart rate monitor is probably the one way off... /cry

Btw, it is one nice workout for me. I'm always soaked in sweat by the time I'm done. And yes, I have double checked the numbers in both my HRM and treadmill to make sure they were not off. Oh, and my HRM is a Timex (if that matters).

60lb in 4 months is quite good going, that's over 4lb a week.
For a 3rd opinion, I just used the Walking Calculator on our website and got:
Walking
272 calories in 30 min (2 miles at 4 mph)
I am not sure why you are disappointed with the numbers. At my current weight, I'm only burning 142 calories for the same time and distance - you're burning more calories for being heavier. I'll need to work out twice as long as you (and as it happens, I do - 90 minutes a day on average).
I think the reason why the heart rate monitor is over-reporting calories burnt is because it looks at your heart rate (which I am guessing is high because you are deconditioned - when you become fitter, walking at 4 mph should not get you so sweaty or breathless) and tells you what an athlete working at 90% of Max HR might be burning.
The true figure for you might be somewhere between the two numbers you stated, but I venture it closer to the lower one.
