I have to say - AT HOME - I just purchased some used equip. and set up an area just for work-out -- getting the teens involved too - this is a plus! bow-flex like machine with weights, ab lounger, a gazelle like machine ... and I had a stationery bike already!
I'm ready - set - and working.....

Right now, I would prefer the home. Simply because I am so embarrassed of my weigh to work out infront of people! When I was thinner I loved going to the gym and working out for hours.

Wow...you have a complete set up in your home! Sounds like a mini gym. :-p I find that I am more full filled going to the gym. There's just so much equipment and different things I can do there. I don't get bored either. Like at 24 Hour Fitness, they have pools, saunas, even free classes that I can mix up into my routine.
Have you you taken group classes before?

I'm not sure I would mind either way. When I had an exercise bike at home I used it regularly, fitting 20-30 minutes in each morning before my shower. But when I've been to a gym it feels good to really go at it for a couple of hours. I guess I'd have to say with my budget and lifestyle exercising at home is by far the better option!

I'm going to say neither, unless outdoor exercise falls more in the 'at home' category. I can't motivate myself to workout at home for some reason - it's more like my domain to relax. At the gym I'm motivated because I see other people around me working out, and there's nothing but exercise machines and weights everywhere.
However; I can no longer afford gym memberships right now. I'm looking into outdoor exercising, especially with spring coming up. I'm going to buy a bike once the snow clears, map out a jogging path, dust off my rollarblades, etc.

| I find I'm not very disciplined at home and do better at the gym. Of course, my main exercise is water aerobics, so that forces me to the gym.

I think jonibug's reply applies to a lot of people. In fact many people do better with a workout buddy they meet at the gym on a schedule... so it gets them there.
Not me. I do as well at home as at the gym.
I'd prefer home, but I use such heavy weights it's not really practical.
I have a three-day routine I repeat twice a week with a day off (which means if I miss a day I can make it up).
Day 1 is triceps and chest.
Day 2 is biceps and lats.
Day 3 is shoulders which I do at home with dumbbells.
About four days a week I walk on an incline on a treadmill, home or gym, which is all I can do with my aging old knees.

I work out better at home than I do in the gym, only because I don't like people looking at me when I work out. This is true at home too. I have the door locked when I work on the treadmill. I won't walk the treadmill where my wife or kids can see me. I think this will change after a while though. In the past I didn't like anyone watching me remove or insert my contact lenses because I was new at it, but now it doesn't bother me.

LOL! Yep, that's it!
I don't take criticism very well, and it seems like everyone's a critic.

Me and my 3 co-workers each have different exercise equipment in our homes and we were discussing getting it all togerther in one place and forming our own private "Gym". I have a stair stepper, one has a Gazzelle, another has an exercise bike and treadmill and the boss lady has a total-gym. Hmmm.... But who has the room to house it all? Sounded like a good idea anyway.

| I would like to do stuff at home but don't have the space to put anything so... I do work at a gym; I barter my time for a membership. Couldn't afford it otherwise but w/ bartering, I work so many hours that I get my and my sisters membership. When I first started back this year working out I was very embarrsed and wouldn't do anything more than treadmill, but I've added weights back in. I think I'm comfortable again cause I'm starting to get know my members again and I'm starting to get back my attitude that has been long gone... Ya know I'll share; If you don't like the way I look, turn your head and your not looking at me anymore! That was the way I thought for years;started after I had my child and gained all the weight I did, looked the way I did. As I'm getting down that self confidence is creeping back in; and it helps that someone is building it too.

| A lot of my challenge with weight loss has been developing a routine that I can participate in everyday from home. I'm just too busy with my kids. I've been looking for something on youtube that I can kind of model until I have my own routine. I thought that this workout idea is good, but I don’t know if I can do it every day. I’ll try… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GZNchwEFX8 Here’s another one too by a different woman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNKexki-9DI&feature=related. Has anyone come across any good free short videos to follow? I just need to make a 10 minute routine with some variety that I can follow.

kakki and kalypso, how much do you or did you struggle with membership? I pay $29 a month at 24 Hour Fitness. It fits my budget and I get to use the gym 24/7. They offer a lot of membership types to meet different budgets tho which is great. Plus, with all the features they have, I really feel like you get a lot for your $$.

Gym, gym, gym! I tried to set up a home gym but I have a very difficult time with motivation. At the gym, I feel much more motivated. I believe it has to do with seeing other people working to get healthy helps to keep me motivated.

| Magic- in vt we don't have those... My background is a single mom, one child and no income but my own. So even $30 for a membership is $30 less in groceries, gas money, daycare, clothes for my growing boy. And there are gyms that cost less but then as I said I'm a single mom; they don't offer daycare, can't afford on top of membership anyway, can't bring my child w/ me while I work out. At least barting my time at this gym, I can bring my son. I've worked off/on for 10yrs for owner at her previous gyms and tanning salons; used to watch her kids in the gym when they were babies. so there you have it, my story(some of it).

When the weather changes and I lose the daylight , I might join the Y for November through March. My best laid plans fell apart after suffering an achilles injury in November that prevented me from using my NordicTrack or doing Tai Bo. I am lucky to have an underground tunnel between state buildings that I get 2 miles a day walking in. My achilles has calmed down a bit and I have walked over 160 miles(most in the past month) this year, and some days I do 6 miles. I am just finishing the 3rd week of establishing the TotalTrainer as a habit. I do pushups, Hindu pushups, Hindu squats and crunches twice a day. I was steady as a horse from April to November last year. Joining a gym is a last resort for me until I fully retire, and will need something to keep me occupied.

I agree, the environement at the gym is great. Seeing everyone else so driven really helps me with my own drive. I also got bored at home, yet, I didn't have all the fancy equipment and features 24 Hour Fitness has either. :-p
Kakki- Yea, VT is one state that does not have 24's. That is great your current gym offers that convenience to you. You have to love convenience.

| Oh yeah... So it just works out perfect for me. Well for now while he is little, when he's old enough to be home by himself it will be a different story. I just can't wait for it to warm up a little more so we can go for walks at home.

| It's the gym for me! Being around other people exercisisng is very motivating. I have stuff at home like and elipticall, weights, balance ball, etc...but I get bored here. I have a building in back yard that I would love to clean up and set up more equipment in! But equipment is soooo expensive. One of these days.

No, I get what you mean cport about being mindful about your $. That's why I can be happy with paying $29 a month, its very resonable for what I get from my membership with 24 Hour Fitness. It's great they really try and work with your spending budget so that you aren't buying into something you don't want.
As far as being embarrased in front of people, I felt more confident the more I went. Seeing everyone working out hard provided me with enough motivation to forget any emabarrasment or confidence issues I had on my mind. It has been working out very nice.

| I should check and see what the gym up town is. I used to go up there years ago and I really liked the machines. I might have to give it another whirl...

Cport- I take it, all this talk about gyms have got you wanting to join again! :-p If its something you miss doing...then go for it! I doubt its 24 Hour Fitness that is in your state, I don't think they have any locations in Wisconsin. Correct me if I am wrong, tho!
What better way that to get your variety on at the gym...and have some fun doing it!

i really like the gym, but think it is a lot more time consuming than exercising at home. once i get a legal job after i get my degree i'm sure i wont have enough time to make it to the gym except on weekends. so when i buy my own place i will definately be getting my own work out room set up. it will just be a lot more convenient as by the time ive done an hour workout at the gym, got changed, dried my hair and drove their and back it takes up about 2.5hrs of my day which is the best part of a morning or afternoon.
im finding it really tough to get to the gym at the moment as i have courseworks and exams are coming up and so i find it hard to make time. im sure if i had a home gym and could fit it in as and when i had free time, it would be a lot easier for me.

Thats when a 24/7 gym comes in handy. I love the flexibility that 24 Hour Fitness offers. With work and school...its hard to make time during "normal" business hours! :-p
