Why isn't the elliptical machine an option on this website?  I'd like to see it added, since it seems like a popular piece of equipment (and I'd like to get an estimate of what it burns).

Thanks!

Sarah

I get more e-mails for this than anything else. As soon as I hear of a study that contains the data I'll post it.

Maybe you (anyone reading this) can find one?

this is one of the best machine at my gym. it gives you the distince, time, heart rate, and calories count, and rpm.

i sweat like crazy on this machine. i'm on it for at least 35-40 minutes. my rpm is usually over 6.0, i'll burn about 450-500 calories. this machine works wonders. it has also helped me to run laps around the track....well, more like 1/2 of a lap but i'm working on doing a whole lap jogging.

The problem with the readouts on the elliptical machines is that they almost always over-estimate caloric burn (sorry) - I have a HRM that I wear sometimes and even when I'm on an elliptical that takes data from it, the machine STILL tells me I've burned 100+ more calories than my heart rate monitor says.

Usually I can only get 500 calories in 70 minutes (as a 145 pound woman) if I REALLY push myself so that I'm breathing heavily the whole time.

I'd just like caloriesperhour to have this as an entry because I like to have something to compare my own readings to ... I usually just use my HRM.

Every piece of excersice equipment I own that has a calorie counter over estimates calories burned. I rarely actually go by those numbers and just watch the time and distance.

BTW I just bought an elliptical myself and started using it. It's a nice workout that makes me sweat and really gets my heartrate up. Still I'm unsure of just how many calories I am burning with it.

After waiting for years for good study data, I am pleased to say that you can now find the Precor EFX 546 Elliptical Trainer Calculator on this website.

On the downside, the calculator can only be used for this one machine. On the upside, it is the most popular elliptical in the world.

Other websites have listed ellipticals for years, but the fact that they do says something about the accuracy of their data as each machine is different. For example, the resistance setting on one machine does not relate to the resistance setting on other machines.

SO glad I found this website! lol

I think/hope we get an eliptical soon. Good to hear that it's a good workout even if the cal count might be a bit more than what you actually burned.

What brand elliptical machine did you buy?  I'm looking for one but don't want to spend $1,000.  I also don't want to buy a cheap one that will break on me.  Any suggestions?

Buy a good brand, second-hand?

There are usually some in the newspapers' small ads.

Calorie counting is much more important for the food you eat than for the exercise you take.

I used to run around 75 miles per week, and was still overweight. Then I finally made the effort to monitor what I stuffed into my face.

Revelatory!

Spend the money and get a Lifefitness 95xi....

Used for around $1500 US

It will NEVER break, and you get an amazing workout!  I've been on one for 3 years now and I still can't get past level 16 (of 20)

One think I find with these trainers is that my feet go numb after about 20 mins!  I don't have my shoes too tight, but I think its that my foot doesn't flex.  Sometimes I try to kinda lift my heels a bit in the forward motion to try elminate that.  I used to find the same thing with my old cycling shoes cos my foot didn't flex.  Anyone else find this?

yes the same thing happens to me...my old user name was Elliptical lover and i still love my elliptical (id better i paid well over 4 grand for it!) anyhow....

I always get that.....i have plantar facitis too, and i tihink that is part of it...but, there is something to remember about ellipticals....they are LOW IMPACT you dont have to even wear shoes when youre using it!!!!  try using slip on shoes instead.....its helped me tremendously!!!!  No more numb and tingly toes or feeling like my foot fell asleep 5 mins into my workout!!!

good luck!

I get numb toes too after about 1/2 hour. I thought I was just strange! I just try to wiggle my feet around, but loosening shoe laces can help too.

I like the suggestion about barefeet, but if I took my shoes off at the gym in the middle of my workout, I'd probably clear half of the gym!

When I joined the YMCA last year I had never used an eliptical. I could not believe what this machine did for me. I have bad knees and it was easy on my joints, unlike the treadmill. I got more of a workout too. The next piece if exercise equipment I purchase will be an eliptical trainer.

WOOHOOO!  go ellipticals!  Glad to hear you had a good experience with them!  I bought a high end one...some are different than others...some feel like gliding and some feel sorta like  a combo between a stepper and a tredmill without the impact!  You just have to try some out and see which one you like best!  Good luck with your purchase!  I couldnt live without mine!!!!

Yes, The LIfefitness 95 is more like gliding, and the Precor 546 is more of a stepper motion.  Actually I like them both for different reasons (different types of workouts)

I wish I could recall the make/model of the unit I used back in Manitoba, but it was amazing.  It had 4 actual pre-programs that targeted different body areas (Upper Body, Lower Body, Upper and Lower, Mix of all).  You would select the area to work, then the arm grips and the foot rests would actually move to a different position.  (if you were doing an upper body work out, it would put you in a more forward position, and there would be less resisitance on the legs)  It was incredible.  You spend 30 minutes on that thing and you know you had a great workout!  Sadly, I can not recall who made it.  I know it would be very $$$$ for a home gym, so I went the cheaper route and bought a model from Nordic Trac.

Yup, favorite machine with my bad knees, formerly broken and unstable ankle, and feet that are numb not only from using it but from a bout of pernicious anemia.  Great and you can really feel it in your core!

I use the nice pricey one at work in the workout room for the heavy duty long work outs and I have a cheapy one at home that does a good of getting the heart rate up but makes me feel like I am going to flip over the front of it.  Oh well, it was a freebie from someone who gave up ( hehe ) and had a big free sign.

I would have to say that is how I have gotten all my excercise equipment, especially in the spring and summer when they all give up.  I have managed to get brand new, barely used in the past two years...here is our family home gym equipment:

2 Nordictrak ski machines....nice ones with all the bells and whistles (including the book holder which I don't have the ability to do at the same time I am using it:tongue:)

1 elliptical machine

1 cardio glide which though isn't made anymore gives one heck of a work out for your bottom half and your arms...love it!!!

1 stair stepper that I detest (as I will always be an elevator girl with these knees) but use anyway.

All free....try it on your next day off during the week....drive around and there they will be with the big free signs and there are enough out there you can pick and choose...

good luck!!!!:sodapop:

Tripleplay,

Was the Cardio-Glide the machine where you sit and it has two set of foot rests and there is a resistance strut under the seat?  The action is where you just pull in a rowing motion, and you have a ton of different hand placement options on the handles?

If what you have is what I am thinking of, then I have one as well.  Bought it new from Sears back in '96 or '97 and it still works fine.  It is a great workout for both upper and lower body.

Javan,

you are exactly right! That is the machine!  It is a great machine and you can definetly feel it when you have been on it.  Of all the machines I have at home, it is the one I love the most.  I just have no idea how many calories I am burning when I am on that.  The closest I can figure is a rowing machine as it is almost the same action and same body areas worked.

I would like to someday try a ROM, but no fitness center around me has one yet.....so i wait.....
