| If it were up to me and I could eat anything I wanted without the consequences, my diet would consist of nothing but peanut butter and products with peanut butter in them. I can't let go of it! I've tried everything I can to resist it and stop eating it completely, but to no avail. Every day I wake up craving a spoonful of Jiff and dying for a reeses cup. Now typically I'm pretty good about just saying no, but it's pure torture! Today I had a little spoonful of peanut butter and had to restrain myself from eating the whole jar. The only way to prevent me from eating it is to get rid of it, but my mom won't let me. She likes the OCCASIONAL spoonful herself and won't stop buying it. Does any one have any advice about how to stop my addiction?

Hmmm. A while back OWF was mentioning peanut butter in her diary all the time. Eventually this got to me and I bought some peanuts and made my own peanut butter in the food processor. However I was always disappointed about the small servings and the high calorie value. Finally I realised that I'm gettting a very similiar taste just putting some peanuts in my mouth and chewing them quite a bit - so I'm not looking back it is nuts rather than nut butters from now on. I moved on and expanded to other nuts and seeds (still including peanuts too).
I aim to have 15% of my calories from fat. Today was mostly fruits and vegetables so I needed to eat 30g (an ounce) of nuts and seeds to help my fat get up to those levels.

| Could you convince her to compromise and purchase the "all-natural" version of peanut butter? Check your labels - but I believe they should be no sugar added. I too am a peanut butter addict, and don't even get me started about nutella. ANyway, I am lucky in that I have the option just to not purchase it. I definitely have sympathy for you. The no-sugar added variety is alot less addictive, but still tasty.

Everyone is so different. But for me, having something around doesn't mean that I am(much) more likely to eat it. If I really want something, there are supermarkets!
If you can learn to take control WITH the peanut butter in the house, you'll be able to keep control elsewhere, including parties and buffets and when you are served way more than you should eat.
I also like baby steps. You could try to cut back slowly, or allow yourself a tablespoon for a treat each day. Perhaps as a reward for not eating more!

I completely know what you mean about Nutella, TrimB! If my mom was still buying that I'd never be able to leave the pantry.
Anyway, I'd like to be the type of girl that can just have treats in moderation, but I'm kind of an all or nothing person so either I consume the entire jar , or treat it like nuclear waste . I suppose I could try making my own or buying the healtier type. My addiction is just pathetically severe. Is there such a thing as P.A? Peanutbutterholics Anonymous?????

| Nir, How do you make peanut butter in the food processor? Do you add anything other than the peanuts? I would really like to give this a try.

Just peanuts nothing else (in my experiment I used ones already roasted). I just put peanuts on their own in the food processor with a steel blade. You have to be patient as reslts are initially not promising, you have to wait quite a while for anything to happen. Quantity is key (not too few not too many).

I'm a huge peanut butter fan, too! I get the all natural kind, which has flaxseed in it as well. It's all about portion control and moderation, just like anything else. I can't believe that only one tablespoon can have 100 cals, so I stick to about 1.5 tblsp max. It's so hard but you really gotta eat it slow and enjoy it!

My problem is Nutella...my sister buys it and now that I'm at home I find myself swiping spoons of it when I get a hankering for something sweet. Unfortunately I don't think there is a healthier alternative to Nutella haha.

| 1 spoonfull of peanut butter & I was lost==had to eat the whole jar ful. If there was no more, I dashed out to buy 2 big jars. Different brands made no diff. Fran ,the local Healthway mgr. said: Drink 8 oz H2O with 1 - 3 Tablespoons of ACV ( plain, common apple cider vinegar) with 12 teaspoon honey 3 x a day, 1/2 hr before meals . It worked. Am peanut butter free.

editherica: yes, you can use acv to help squelch a craving, and especially helpful with sugar cravings. Be careful not to take it without diluting it as the strength of it will wear off the enamel of your teeth. But it is a very healthy drink. Best if you buy the organic kind "with the mother". You get the nutrient from it that way. This is actually one of the components of my sugarcravingsdiet.com and I actually ran 2 test groups and proved this to be true.
And another way to extend that satisfaction of the taste of peanut butter but not so many calories: mix 1 tbl. of p.b. with 1 t. of fat free cream cheese. It double the amount for only another 20 calories. You don't taste the cream cheese at all...the pb totally overwhelms it. Give it a try.

Read your post and wanted to laugh/cry because I too have experienced the extreme peanut butter addiction! I seriously think it's genetic because I had this conversation with my brother and we both agreed that we cannot keep peanut butter in our apartments because we will eat the ENTIRE jar in about 1 day.
My obsession has lessened within the past few months (I have no idea why) but my feeling is that we all go through periods of food addictions. (Mine lasted like 2 years). It's weird and I didn't even notice it until later, but I realized that I didn't crave peanut butter all the time, and now I don't really crave it at all.
Maybe you could ask your mom to hide the peanut butter- I have had to ask my roommates to do it but maybe it is something that will just run its course. I personally think it's a cool quirk of your personality, but I know that doesn't really help out when it's stressful thinking about its caloric content and such.
I guess I just wanted to say that you are definitely not alone in this addiction and I understand your frustration with peanut butter's and its mysterious ways.
